| body | 12/30/18 Carpo's Blog: "Stories we tell ourselves" The sad stories we tell ourselves are often the only thing holding us back from greatness. And it is my belief that each of us deserves to feel good about ourselves. We all have issues with self-esteem, which is why so many people are self-critical; yet if this is true, then why do so many others appear self-obsessed? Have they discovered a secret to confidence that we should learn ourselves? Usually not. If you dig deeper, those who appear to be confident and strong-willed are often the softest when you peel away the layers. It is one thing to have confidence in yourself, but quite another to tell people that you are the greatest and that you know what is best for them. We all know people like that. Of course, there are very confident people who have discovered how to find balance with their self-image. Yet they rarely talk about their own awareness. This is something I myself have been working on, as I get older and realize my own self-doubts, which are usually shaped by those pesky 'Stories we tell ourselves'. By realizing those stories and not letting our past define us, we can truly become new people and shape our future the way we want it. We have to own our thoughts, and try not to ignore them. If we have a defeating or negative emotion, we should not fight it or suppress it, but rather let it flow through us. With practice, we can learn to receive information, process it and let it go. Emotions are temporary, they will pass, and there is no such thing as 'finding happiness'. What we do is find things that give us more positive feelings, or improve our lives, but there will always be hard times. Creating a space in our minds to let our thoughts flow through is an essential part of remaining sane. We do not have to hold on to outdated opinions merely because we are attached to them. It is that attachment to ideas that causes so much of the strife in the world. Our stubborn inability to compromise is usually driven by our egos, and when we feel our ideals are threatened, we resort to name calling and violence. Wars are fought on the premise that 'we' know better than 'them', and this is the world we are forced to reckon with. Of course some times we DO know that other opinions are wrong, and these are difficult things to deal with. Especially when people are attached to their opinions, they tend to take criticism of ideas as a criticism of themselves. Blaming others for our bad luck is another damaging attitude that causes division and xenophobia. People are quick to blame the Jews, the Mexicans, The government, their parents, their lot in life or a host of other justifications for our actions against others, and our lack of empathy. Not loving the self is the first step toward not loving the world, and eventually one can learn to hate life itself. People who feel marginalized or unlucky will often spew hatred and incite violence to make themselves feel better. Some become trolls online, or members of extremist groups like the ALT-RIGHT morons marching with tiki torches in the streets. This last part tells a story- that yes, I also have opinions. I have limits to my tolerance, and when I see someone speaking what I see as lies, I have to object. We do not have to sit by passively and love everyone, nor accept things we see as damaging. That said, we must educate ourselves not just on the subjects we speak about, but the way we hadle it personally and how our emotions surface when we feel threatened. Each of us must find a place in our minds which work for us personally, but we should never overlook the potential of doing damage to others with our lifestyles. When we find a way to love ourselves, love others, and still not put up with bullshit, then we are onto something. However, if we tell ourselves the story that 'everyone is out to get us', we can easily be sucked into the conspiracy realm, the military machine, or a promising cult, all which promise that we will be in the 'Right' while the rest of the world is 'Wrong'. This short term thinking never works, never has worked, and often ends in tragedy. If we are off in another country killing other humans, because w were told that they are evil, then we are living someone else's story, that entire nations tell themselves. We blur the line between 'self defense' and 'murder', and it becomes the norm in society. Oh, another war started? Yeah, we get those every week. And some tell a story that 'war can be avoided', while others tell the story that 'war is inevitable to defend our borders', and who is right? Or is there some truth to all opinions which have enough people behind them? We can see how strong the opinions of others are, yet we still think we are in the right. Can both sides of a war be in the right? Can all religions be right? Can it serve someone well to move into the jungle and join a cult? These are subjective to the degree that no one man can claim to have the answers. We can only walk in one pair of shoes, no matter how we look at it, and it is easy to assume that everyone thinks as we do. But the bet we can hope for are a few common themes in our lives. One of those themes, or archetypes is the struggle of the individual. The lonely path of the heroes journey, to find our place in the world in our short time here. This cannot be understated, as it is the defining factor in how we feel about ourselves. If we are not on our journey, or filling our purpose, whatever it may be, we will never be satisfied with our lives. And I must add, that does not mean the grass is greener on the other side, as it rarely is. I like to say it is AstroTurf, or fake grass, and there's nothing worse than getting fake grass. Many people will tell you that there IS no purpose, that life is just chance, and we are just hairless apes fumbling in the dark. And they may be right! But don't listen to them. Feel deep in your heart, and you will hear a voice screaming to get out. your true self. And we have suppressed it for so long, for fear of ridicule, or appearing too 'hippyish', or 'spiritual' or any host of other terms. But we all have an inner voice that wants to create something, to explore, to share and grow with others, but we are resistant because it is not what we have been taught. The story of being the 'adult' has become our defining rite of passage, we turn 18 and we are thrown into an indifferent world before we know what hit us. We know that the self we present to this world is tainted by our past experiences and our self-image. So what can we do about it? The first thing is to ask ourselves what we really want out of life, which is far harder to realize than it may first appear. It can take years to break from the mold that we are cut from. We must create a head space that allows us to deal with things honestly, and over a period of time we may find that being rich was never what we really wanted, and being famous was just a way that we could be recognized in life. It is our failure to see ourselves in others, and others in ourselves, that causes us so much grief in life. Looking another human in the eyes and realizing that they have the same fears as we do can be very empowering, to the contrary of what one may think. When we are drowning with others, it can take our mind off the fact that we as well will soon succumb to the waves. We also must test out new things, in order to see what resonates with us. We are never too old to try a science experiment, or develop a new theory about the creation of the universe. We do not give ourselves the credit we deserve or recognize the potential we have to create. We leave things to the 'experts' and question our own abilities. This is natural because we know others spent much more time developing their skills, yet fail to realize we could as well if we wanted to. It is never too late to find a niche. So if you are unhappy in your place in the world, simply change it. What is holding us back other than our wages? Well we need wages to live, of course, but if we are not living well, what good are they? Each person must decide for themselves, given they have the freedom to do so. Always remember there are others who have NO choice in their paths. If you do, take advantage of it. You get one chance at this life, so make it count. Never blame others for your incompetence or shortcomings, for this merely takes the blame off ourselves and allows for more division. Everything that happens to us in life affects our attitudes and opinions, but we cannot change the past, and dwelling on it serves nobody. If you never filled your expectations in life, there is always still time, if you use that energy to make it happen. Realistically, we may never be able to fulfill our dreams, but the act of trying is what matters. Just as the journey means more than the destination, our efforts are all that matter, not the results. Results do help though. Another beneficial practice is to constantly re-assess our strengths and weaknesses. This habit I have found is easily overlooked, as we become more rigid in our views as we age. We might think that it is too late to do something meaningful with our lives, but some of the greatest discoveries and many wonderful books have been written far beyond retirement age. It is never too late to start something, and as we gain wisdom through the years we can produce something of value. Any young writer can learn English well enough to write a great book, but only the wisdom of time brings forth the most valuable stories. It takes time to learn what we really need in life. Never assume someone else out there has the answers that you need, or you will find yourself trapped by the limitations of understanding. We can take the wisdom of others and see what works and what does not, yet our own experiences may differ. If we ARE going to listen to others, be sure that they are themselves truly benefiting from their actions, or beliefs. If someone is screaming the sky is falling, and their life is clearly not in order, they may be merely projecting their fears and shortcomings onto the world. Many who rant about all the corruption and conspiracies in the world can trace their fears back to trust issues from their youth, perhaps a misdirected suspicion or hostility that is rooted in an event in their life, or a lost love, or someone who wronged them, and they take it out on others. This is not to say there are no conspiracies or corruption in the world, far from it there is too much to ever list. But a predisposition to obsess over them and consistently tell others the future is grim is something you likely will not find with an emotionally stable human, unless they are doing so merely for the financial gain of pulling in other people who DO have fears and suspicions. Then we have the people who do not believe their own hype, but get others riled up because intensity sells. it always has. These emotional experiences we have lead people to feminism, or the men's rights movement, as a way to get back at half the population that they feel has slighted them. We join 'groups' because it makes us feel like we belong, but fail to see that if our group excludes others merely for being different, as a premise for it's existence, it will fail. There is a psychological side to it that cannot be overlooked, and it tells us a lot about ourselves when we understand others. I am no psychologist, but I regularly read psychological journals and studies in order to better understand myself. In recent decades we have learned what causes various diseases of the body, and as well the mind. We are learning that our history determines our future, and that we can use our minds to overcome our negative experiences if we are willing to let go of being a victim. Nobody wants to be a victim, but it is often used as a defense mechanism to protect ourselves against others. And while we are talking about not letting others determine what works for you, we cannot overlook our tendency to think our ideas work for others. It is arrogant for us to tell others how to live, what to believe or what is important. However this is how it has always been, and it is often rooted in insecurity. We fear that others may corrupt our beliefs, just like Socrates corrupting the youth in Athens. Though today, we have more freedom to choose what to believe, we still tend to take others beliefs as our own to provide comfort and connection. Our cultures tell us what god to believe in, what we should do with our lives, and how we should serve others. By the time we are old enough to think for ourselves, it is hard to break from the mold. But we cannot forget that the mold is necessary, for if we have no systems we have no way to learn, and no culture. We have to see what others have tried before us, and where they have succeeded and failed. On a final note, I believe that the most crucial aspect of our worldview is to have a 'Good World' hypothesis, which means to believe that in general most people mean well, and evil is more or less subjective. We can impose our versions of good and evil on the world, but it cares not. We can argue eternally about what a god might want, or where we go when we die, what obligations we have in Earth, if any, and what the intentions of people are in the world. If we spend our lives thinking that everyone is out to get us, that everyone has a price and is more or less corrupt, we will lead a life of fear and discomfort. We may think we are protecting ourselves against damage by avoiding other beliefs, but in reality we can see that there is much more to gain, and little to lose, if we let others into our hearts and minds. If our convictions are truly strong, and our foundations solid, we should be able to weather even the most extreme storms. In the end, however, there is little that can be guaranteed. We never know how things will turn out, but when we know ourselves, truly know ourselves, we can see the humanity in others. Ask anyone over the age of 75 what things they found most important in life, and what regrets they have. The best we can hope for is a life of simple pleasures, and as little pain as possible. But this depends on our Mental Alchemy, the most crucial part of the whole process. Because no matter what happens to us in life, how many joys or pains we encounter, or what roads we go down, our perception of the results are all that matter. Eye of the beholder, or glass half full, one cannot deny that the only thing we truly have control over in this world is our perceptions, if we learn how. Stay sane- Carpo |

\n So what can we do about it? The first thing is to ask ourselves what we really want out of life, which is far harder to realize than it may first appear. It can take years to break from the mold that we are cut from. We must create a head space that allows us to deal with things honestly, and over a period of time we may find that being rich was never what we really wanted, and being famous was just a way that we could be recognized in life. It is our failure to see ourselves in others, and others in ourselves, that causes us so much grief in life. Looking another human in the eyes and realizing that they have the same fears as we do can be very empowering, to the contrary of what one may think. When we are drowning with others, it can take our mind off the fact that we as well will soon succumb to the waves.\n We also must test out new things, in order to see what resonates with us. You get one chance at this life, so make it count.\n Never blame others for your incompetence or shortcomings, for this merely takes the blame off ourselves and allows for more division. \n Another beneficial practice is to constantly re-assess our strengths and weaknesses. It takes time to learn what we really need in life.\n Never assume someone else out there has the answers that you need, or you will find yourself trapped by the limitations of understanding. We can take the wisdom of others and see what works and what does not, yet our own experiences may differ. If we ARE going to listen to others, be sure that they are themselves truly benefiting from their actions, or beliefs.\n If someone is screaming the sky is falling, and their life is clearly not in order, they may be merely projecting their fears and shortcomings onto the world. Then we have the people who do not believe their own hype, but get others riled up because intensity sells. it always has.\n These emotional experiences we have lead people to feminism, or the men's rights movement, as a way to get back at half the population that they feel has slighted them. We join 'groups' because it makes us feel like we belong, but fail to see that if our group excludes others merely for being different, as a premise for it's existence, it will fail.\n There is a psychological side to it that cannot be overlooked, and it tells us a lot about ourselves when we understand others. \n And while we are talking about not letting others determine what works for you, we cannot overlook our tendency to think our ideas work for others. It is arrogant for us to tell others how to live, what to believe or what is important. However this is how it has always been, and it is often rooted in insecurity. We fear that others may corrupt our beliefs, just like Socrates corrupting the youth in Athens. Though today, we have more freedom to choose what to believe, we still tend to take others beliefs as our own to provide comfort and connection.\n Our cultures tell us what god to believe in, what we should do with our lives, and how we should serve others. By the time we are old enough to think for ourselves, it is hard to break from the mold. But we cannot forget that the mold is necessary, for if we have no systems we have no way to learn, and no culture. We have to see what others have tried before us, and where they have succeeded and failed.\n On a final note, I believe that the most crucial aspect of our worldview is to have a 'Good World' hypothesis, which means to believe that in general most people mean well, and evil is more or less subjective. If our convictions are truly strong, and our foundations solid, we should be able to weather even the most extreme storms.\n In the end, however, there is little that can be guaranteed. Eye of the beholder, or glass half full, one cannot deny that the only thing we truly have control over in this world is our perceptions, if we learn how.\n\n\nStay sane-\nCarpo",

| body | It is 2018. Is it 2018? What does that mean, anyway? The year 2000 once loomed on the horizon like a monolith of the Future, giving us promises of flying cars and automated lifestyles, more time for leisure and a society with no more crime or wars. Or at least, that was one story told. The other ‘Mad Max’ style future was also a possibility, where we destroyed ourselves through the use of horrific weapons, and doomed ourselves and the rest of the planet to a nuclear winter for eternity. Both stories were presented by Hollywood, and both were equally plausible; though neither could ever hope to capture the real essence of what it would mean to be a citizen of the 21st century, especially in a Western society. As our technology grew, we as individuals grew along with it, although a bit slower. We do have some catching up to do with our own capabilities. However, the idea that the ‘Powers that Be’ would be able to harness technology and use it against us, without us using it against them as well, was at best a silly notion. We are observant, capable people. Those who we might call ‘Big Brother’ had no need to force us into being watched, we willingly stepped into the world of the internet on our own. In Orwell’s 1984, everyone had a camera in their television sets that kept tabs on everything they did, and Big Brother was always watching. Instead, we merely introduced our own cameras, and decided to give up our own dreams, desires and interests willingly. Instead of slaves of the government, we became slaves of the corporations and advertisers. The creepiest part about it is that by proxy we work for Big Brother, they are just the defenders of the Great Empire of lobbyists and shills who influence public policy through legislature. I present these points first to illustrate the reason for our extreme public dissent today, and why we stand in defiance against so many of those who claim to represent us as citizens. As the Empire takes more control, the response was to fight back from the Left, and that is what happened in the 1960’s with the Vietnam War. This was the first televised war ever, and it gave a new perspective to what was really going on in the world. People were disgusted by what they saw, and for the first time, Americans began to rethink their place in the world. We had done well economically since the Second World War, and did not want to waste our lives, resources and efforts on fighting against enemies that posed no real threat to our well-being. This was when trust in government began to corrode, and the Nixon administration did not do much to help the situation. The war on drugs was the next failed step, designed for nothing more than to keep the prisons full, and perpetuate racism, classism and disparity among the citizens. In recent decades, the public trust in those who are our representatives gets lower and lower every decade, with small bursts of patriotism and support here and there, (usually fostered by the claim an external threat). Today, the term for everything that we find threatening to our way of life is ‘terrorism’, and it has been working for quite a while. The people are waking up however, and they do not like what they are seeing. Recently however, things have begun to take a turn in a new direction. As the Leftist ideals become more and more radicalized, there are groups which are growing in size which consist of young, frustrated people who have had enough of the division and the infighting. A side effect of this frustration is the ongoing battle against hate speech, which in turn can become an issue of free speech, and this is why we are at such odds with one another regarding the ‘Liberal’ versus ‘Conservative’ ideal. Most people are somewhere in the middle, with views from both sides, and can sit and discuss the issues without taking others opinions personal. There is a trend however if complete intolerance from the Left, and the label which has been given to these people are “Social Justice Warriors”. This is a bit difficult because many people would say, what’s wrong with social justice? And I would agree, we all want justice. The problem arises when people are persecuted for their beliefs on either side, merely for the sake of being ‘right’ or ‘winning’. In fact, up until about a year ago, if you asked me, I would identify myself as a liberal person. Today however, I cannot even make that claim because the term is so tainted. I would be more of a “Classical Liberal’. Because yes, even the meanings have changed over time, and what they represent. A conservative today is not the same as a conservative 200 years ago, and that goes as well for democrats. Many of the issues over time have even flipped sides; so it is natural for us to classify ourselves as one or the other, but let’s be realistic, life is more complicated than picking sides, and politics is no exception. I would like to compare the political center of a nation to be just like the brain of the individual. There are two hemispheres, one which tends to be more creative, and the other which helps us to be rational and organized. Chaos, and order. In politics, we have the exact same thing, and once we see this, it all begins to make sense. It has been shown that there are REAL DIFFERENCES in the brains of those who tend to lean Left, and those who lean Right. Without the creativity of the Liberal minded folks, we would suffer for great art, music and innovation. We would not have as many entrepreneurs of small businesses, because the liberals tend to take more risks, step out of their comfort zone, and try new things. This is known as the ‘Anima’ or female energy, and without it we are walking calculators. We all have varying degrees of these traits. That said, without the conservative minded person, we would always be trying new things, without considering the consequences, and stability would be lost. Without stability and consistency, nothing can endure. So it is the intertwining of these two hemispheres of the brain, and in turn, of politics, which keeps us in balance. The problem comes when we forget that fact, and try to dominate. This is not just left and Right either, but Male and Female. I believe if we had equal numbers of Democrat and Republican politicians, and as well equal numbers of men and women running the government, well, at least we could know if it was worth the try, because the patriarchal society we have today is eating itself alive. This brings us to the question of authority. Much of the world defers authority to the few who claim to have the answers. In past centuries, this was referred to as ‘Divine Rule’. Any leader who took office was determined to be placed there by God, and in many instances was a local representative of Divinity. What was good for the leaders were good for the people, and this delusion persisted because the poor were too ignorant and too powerless to do anything about it other than to rise up and protest from time to time, and overthrow a few brutal dictators. Of course, today in our modern world, many have become so entwined with their own poverty, and so blind to their own society, they can afford to place the blame for anything they choose on one another while at the same time telling their fellow neighbors to shut up, sit down, listen to your leaders and don’t rock the boat. When the boat has a hole in it however, one does not sit and wait around when a crew member to tell them to leave it alone. Doing so will kill everyone on the ship, so often we have to act on our own accord when we feel things are not right. ' So in essence, a modern president in a free nation should be no more than a servant to the will of the people. Decisions must be made that the public cannot understand, and surely that means that not all issues will be agreed upon. Difficult choices are all around us, and nothing is as simple as it may seem on the outside, but we do our best to find a utilitarian system in which the most people can benefit from the choices we make. Hopefully that is decided on by both hemispheres. The paradox case in point would be the current US president. A position which has always required humility, patience, understanding and an ability to work for the people. Today we have none of that. In fact, the direct opposite is true. A man who is not a servant for the people, but rather has always told everyone what to do, a former ‘boss’ who has taken the role of servant, and it does not suit him well. Men like that dream of being divine rulers, and wish the world could remain ignorant and just do what they say. In the modern world, the absurdity of that is beyond words. This is a case in point as to how we can say one thing, and do another. We would never tolerate behavior from one another that we tolerate from those who we elect into office. It is always a double-standard, and we justify it somehow. It is my belief that we do not need ‘rulers’ for our world. We do not need to be told how to pray any more than how to be patriotic, how to speak or how to think. We have come a long way from being peasants in the countryside, and mils from being slaves in the cotton fields. We have come out of the dark ages of illiteracy (though still far too common in this country; brought to you by horrible greed and money management, and lobbyists in congress, but also things are slow to change) but we have found ourselves with the same problems we always had. Greed, racism, imperialistic attitudes and xenophobia all about. I will say this- much of what we observe is due to the fact wed have only recently come into much of the technology and insight which allowed us to help people far away from us, and to communicate directly with other cultures. We are still in the birth process here, so it will take a little time. In the meantime however, we still have to face things like a $100 Million ‘Noah’s Ark’ replica, complete with people riding dinosaurs, a gift shop and a $30 million dollar tax break from the state- or politicians trying to re-segregate schools, bailing out Wall Street, spying on the American people and invading any country that does not play by the rules of the elite. Often I wondered ‘will we ever stand up for what we want?’ Why do we not protest the white house, or stand together for equality and unity? I guess it took me a couple decades to admit to myself that unity and equality are not universal desires. Selling fear has always been popular, and the easiest thing to get people to fear is another race, culture, religion or political view. We are not allowed to be ‘moderate’, or to think outside the box, unless it is to the liking of the other boxes. That said, when the Right claims that we should look to “America First’ they are not completely wrong. After all, we must care for ourselves before we can care for others. But in the current atmosphere in the world, we really need to be closer to each other than ever before if we are to solve our crises. I don’t think anyone has all the answers, and I sure don’t think we have it all figured out. There are however many people who take advantage of our insecurity and confusion to inflate their own egos. When I look to my own government, I cannot help but see the divisive and egotistical nature of those we have to represent us. We deserve much better. At the very least, we need people who are working for the people, and that means they care. If someone does not care about the working class, this country will never survive. Our grandparents fought for civil rights, fair wages, women’s voting and a 40 hour work week ….and were punished and killed for daring to speak out. This is carefully swept under the rug in our history books. We have a dark history of suppression of free speech under the guise of ‘national security’, and the elite who have set it up that way know exactly what kind of psychology to use to turn the people against their own neighbors, who are often just trying to live their own lives under the same oppression. Does anyone have the right to divine rule? They would like to think so…but today it is truly our responsibility to make sure tyranny and oppression are confronted anywhere they may surface, no exceptions. The world is only as scary as we allow it to be, and this means we all need to educate ourselves on history, science and the future if we are to ever make it another century with any dignity left. That means we leave behind our arrogant ‘better than you’ nature, and start to respect one another’s views. We can change, but the sad fact is that we do not want to. It may take a while to get people to see that other humans are just as important, even if they happen to live at a different latitude. I hope people see that if their neighbors are starving, they will suffer as well, and that extends to every corner of the globe. Moreover, we do not need to ‘Change’ as individuals. We only need to see the other side, and be willing to listen to our neighbors concerns, and that goes for ALL of us, on any side of the issues. I hope that we see that destabilizing countries and having twitter arguments with volatile leaders, or trolling for attention, is something so vulgar, so preposterous, that only in the 21st century would we allow it to happen and not be surprised. I would say shame on us, but it is not our fault that we are wired for propaganda. It will be our fault if we don’t come together and see that we have more in common than we ever have in difference. Something’s gotta give. Or maybe, we do. Time will tell…. -Carpo |

"body": "It is 2018. Is it 2018?\nWhat does that mean, anyway?\n \n The year 2000 once loomed on the horizon like a monolith of the Future, giving us promises of flying cars and automated lifestyles, more time for leisure and a society with no more crime or wars.\n Or at least, that was one story told.\n \n The other ‘Mad Max’ style future was also a possibility, where we destroyed ourselves through the use of horrific weapons, and doomed ourselves and the rest of the planet to a nuclear winter for eternity.\n \n Both stories were presented by Hollywood, and both were equally plausible; though neither could ever hope to capture the real essence of what it would mean to be a citizen of the 21st century, especially in a Western society. \n \n Those who we might call ‘Big Brother’ had no need to force us into being watched, we willingly stepped into the world of the internet on our own. In Orwell’s 1984, everyone had a camera in their television sets that kept tabs on everything they did, and Big Brother was always watching.\n \n Instead, we merely introduced our own cameras, and decided to give up our own dreams, desires and interests willingly. Instead of slaves of the government, we became slaves of the corporations and advertisers. The creepiest part about it is that by proxy we work for Big Brother, they are just the defenders of the Great Empire of lobbyists and shills who influence public policy through legislature. \n \n I present these points first to illustrate the reason for our extreme public dissent today, and why we stand in defiance against so many of those who claim to represent us as citizens. \n \n This was when trust in government began to corrode, and the Nixon administration did not do much to help the situation. The war on drugs was the next failed step, designed for nothing more than to keep the prisons full, and perpetuate racism, classism and disparity among the citizens. In recent decades, the public trust in those who are our representatives gets lower and lower every decade, with small bursts of patriotism and support here and there, (usually fostered by the claim an external threat). | body | I believe we have evolved in order to recognize the beauty of the universe, and manipulate free will through consciousness, in order to become creators ourselves. The nature of existence lends no hint to the fundamental construct which underlies every Planck length of existence; we can only speculate on what strings or levers may lie below the machinery of what we call ‘reality’. Glimpses may be had of those depths, however fleeting…. But this is not for us to comprehend. Even our shared reality is merely sensory, and varies by each person’s interpretation of the world. Each a different angle, every fear, every hope, every desire affecting how we perceive even the simplest of things. There is no consensus reality, and never was. We find strings and patterns which we agree on, and coalesce into factions and countries in order to uphold those patterns. Every creation eventually meets its demise, and human constructs are not excluded from that fate. This means one should not mourn the passing of ‘Truth’ as an objective term. Nor the death of our faux culture. We need not fear that our economies are failing, that our people are divided, that there is war and pestilence and hatred and anger and frustration, for these are all reflections of the angst the universe periodically suffers, each of our own sufferings a mirror image of a planetary demise. Shared chaos….. and from chaos, emerges order. It is the only way it can be. Out of the ashes rises the Phoenix, a rebirth always follows the death of a culture. In our case, the crumbling football stadiums will be no different from the gladiator halls of the past, and surely, our descendants will see them as equally absurd. I can hear it now…. “What do you mean, Father? Our ancestors gave themselves brain damage for entertainment? Why?” “I do not know son, I do not know…..We have come a long way, haven’t we?” Perhaps in time, when the smoke has cleared, and the damage assessed, we will find the half-life of uranium was not so bad after all. Maybe. We could find ways to remedy our past errors, using mycelium and fungus to clean up oil spills, and maybe even nuclear waste. We might find a way to dispose of the need for harmful fertilizers and pesticides. We might even decide that eating meat, however delicious and nutritious it may, or may not, be… The argument of nutrition pales in comparison to the toll on our environment, and upon closer inspection of the miles of hog slop and manure holding ponds, the sludge from mining and extraction, and even the nuclear waste ponds leftover from rare earth mining for the very magnets we used to make our wind farms from, we may decide that it was just better to start over. We had so many options….. So much for green energy….. but hey, we at least tried. There is nothing depressing about a tree consuming the decaying corpses of a million fallen cicadas…. So brief were their lives, just long enough to add some spice to the soil, and feed the local birds and lizards. But the tree sits silently, fungus assisting in careful dismantling of the innards and antennae of the rotting cicadas, until every molecule is dispersed throughout the underlying network of filaments and roots. Purpose served, the cycle starts over again. As in the Roman Empire, a hundred others have fallen. Some larger than others, we have reached a capacity beyond the resources which we currently possess. Farmland becomes wasteland, desertification takes hold of our once fertile valleys and grasslands, as we make way for more and more ‘progress’ to insure we have enough subdivisions to hold the workers for the factories that would collapse in a matter of decades. Yeah, we really fucked up. But what of it? What would we expect instead? We were primitive creatures just yesterday on the evolutionary tree, and have to remember how much we are influenced by our primal brains. Working to better ourselves, while a noble gesture, cannot change society as a whole unless others are willing to participate. We only deserve better when we can agree on an outcome, and while a majority of us are still influenced by invisible forces and scary evil demons, that is what we will continue to pursue. Legislation will be passed affecting millions of individual people based on hearsay, religion and philosophy. Nobody is ever happy with all the outcomes of a society. Part of what it means to live in a so-called ‘democracy’ means we will not always agree on policy. That is as it should be, but when outside forces and lobbying interferes with rational discourse and decision making, entire societies crumble under the weight of their own fat greed and ignorance. The people become the slaves, and the masters become rich. We have been there for a long time, the hammer has been held up by a few people in powerful positions for some time now. When we meet the demise of our friends in Rome, however, it is not likely that any superpower will arise from the ashes. It will be people. This is because when the shit hits the fan this time, it might take awhile to recover. Our society hangs by a thread, and the only thing keeping the world economies afloat is nothing has happened yet to shake us into the realization that we are completely going down the wrong path and nobody is steering the ship. My belief, however absurd, is that everything has a purpose. In the case of consciousness, maybe nature wanted mankind to create something magnificent, something that would require a high degree of technology to achieve, such as sending our bacterial brethren out into the depths of space, to colonize other galaxies. Perhaps. With our current knowledge base, we can do a lot of great things for ourselves, but what can we do for the universe? The idea seems so ridiculous on one hand, but replace the word ‘universe’ with ‘God’ and everyone is suddenly on board. Can we not agree to disagree on how to define this force? Jesus H Christ people, what is your problem with having to define the one REAL GOD? Ahem. At any rate, we as creators must find our own path, and use caution not to fall into the trap if idolizing others. That is balanced with the need to avoid becoming an egotistical mess and needing constant approval ourselves to keep going. One must be strong, and wise, and healthy, and intelligent, and all of this in an environment where we are nurtured and feel safe, able to speak freely. How often do these conditions come together for the average person today? Not often enough. It’s a cruel reality that many live in conditions far too disgusting to find the time to worry about setting any path for themselves, except maybe to the water pump where they pay for a gallon of fresh water from their own well, which is locked at night by a Foreign company who bought the well and sells the water back to the people. Yes, it happens, and it is reality. We treat each other like cattle, and this is always the sign of a failing machine. When all parts are not given equal attention, one loose bolt can collapse the cart. We destroy our own system. That is just fact. External circumstances, however, are more likely a culprit for the demise of the Western way of life, and may come sooner than later. No matter what mess we can create for ourselves, Mother Nature can deliver more death than we could shake a stick at. Truth is, we have reached a time when our own nuclear arsenal could wipe out most of the life on Earth in a giant flash and a nuclear winter. But a virus, too small to see, could do the same in a very short time. We are living beyond our means and refusing to look at things rationally, but rather than preparing we are screaming at one another. So goes life. You cannot prepare for a blind punch, only be ready for anything. My hope is that from those ashes, we can all be the Phoenix. Are you depressed now? Don’t be…. The vast field of possibilities we have in each of us allows for a change of heart at any time, and a change of pace to suit ourselves. We really are creators of our own reality, for only our eyes see things the way we do. Nobody really has a consensus reality except what we choose to pretend to understand in one another, those patterns that we agree on which create the divisions we decide to uphold as ‘values’. Those values differ as much as our faces do, though as non-material ideas they are harder to distinguish. I did not write this to show how we have failed, but to show why we will prevail. There was never any such thing as ‘Human Spirit’ in the past, only “Human Self-Interest” in not dying. We created that term to describe the desire to move forward, to discover new things and to share those discoveries with one another. That meaning however has become rather obscured. Somehow, along the way, we decided that ideas were personal property, and people were items of commerce. We stopped sharing our discoveries for fear of losing the ego boost that went with being recognized, and we thought the only way to protect our empires was to pretend that slaves had inferior genetics and deserved their fate. That was bullshit, and we always knew it. We wanted more than we deserved, more than was naturally viable long term, and instead of using nature as a guide we took luxury as a given right. Was it? Who really benefits from the vast wealth which is accrued in the name of progress? We know where it goes, but forget that it is invisible. It has no substance. The trillions of ‘dollars’ locked up in hyperspace will never be collected on, for the only thing they represent is commerce, and what can be obtained differs from that reality. A billion dollars will not buy a carpenter if there are none to be found, so the system relies on participation by each of us. It appears that people have discovered this, and are refusing to play the game. This is a sure sign of collapse of an empire that has stood the test of time- the Human Empire. We have backed ourselves into a corner and the only way out seems to be to bring the house down. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, and maybe a few thousand nuclear missiles or a virus, you know, that kind of stuff. Which brings me full circle back to the loss of Truth as an objective term. “Do not mourn that which you never lost, for you may have never had it in the first place…” We never had it. Dusting off the cobwebs of our past and delving into the vast sum of knowledge we have accrued in the past few thousand years, those who choose to study civilization will see that History as presented is merely a fantasy, a collection of anecdotes and stories left by the ancestors themselves, just as overstated and biased as any modern blogger or author, and musician or artist who has an opinion and a theory. Religion shows us this well, how a small idea can be magnified and expanded on for several hundred years, and convince people who have no evidence whatsoever to believe as much, except what we call ‘faith’ from what others have told us. Faith indeed, for everything we are taught from the time we can talk is suspect, and the picture we have created of the world is far too subjective and personal to ever hope to study ‘consciousness’ as an objective observer. What a joke of an idea! Oh, what a joke indeed… we are trapped by our own consciousness, yet freed from the constraints of clockwork by that very trap. Such a conundrum. The solution comes, eventually, to all who consider and seek it. The solution is to see there was never a problem, (or always a problem) the world will play out as it does, and the only control we have at all is over how we choose to observe, and what we choose to do; most importantly, how we react to those things around us. The Solution to the ‘Truth Dilemma’ is to realize that people have been lying to you from the time you were born. Presidents and officials have lied about the state of the union from the time that ANY country was founded. Protecting self-interests has been a cornerstone of politics in every time through history. The founding fathers of the United States were not all upstanding men with fantastic ideas and honest intentions, they were just much better at hiding the corruption in a time when the printing press was the best social media around. Information has always been controlled, and when you consider why, you see there can be no other way. Nobody wants to be smeared, nobody wants their darkest truths exposed or their failures displayed in the limelight, no politician wants their past inspected and every decision noted, but in the modern world, that is exactly how it is. Digital media has made it appear that there is something new in the works… They call it ‘Lying’. Oh my goodness, what will we ever do? Sarcasm aside, those lies are easier to confront when evidence can be presented, and our current world allows everybody to find whatever dirt they choose on whoever may have committed a heinous act or used public funds improperly. We can find criminals, and use digital trails to catch all kinds of failures of values, and expose them instantly for the entire world to see. This means on one hand we can all help to expose the corruption, but on the other hand it allows us to buy into the lies more easily, and the new idea of ‘Fake News’ comes to be born. There is nothing new under the sun, and these behaviors are not exclusive to our generation or time. They are just more plentiful, and easier to see. We have a literal window to the entire world; in many areas more people have cell phones and internet than indoor plumbing. We are truly living in strange times, and our fast paced lives create a sense that everything is falling apart and there is no way to stop it. (It’s not falling apart, relax. It is just starting over. Reset. Reboot. Recharge. Of course our descendants may or may not participate) I speak for my own perception, to be sure. I could be lying. You never know. Nothing I say should be considered fact. I know no facts, only ideas. I have no Truths, only opinions. We can never perform the same experiment twice in the same way, as conditions and expectations are always changing, and the very observation affects the outcome of the experiment. We are ripples in a pond, moving outward, water slowly moving back to a calm state. We are soon far below resting on the bottom, with no trace left on the surface. Our societies are like anthills, working hard to build higher, higher, higher… but eventually every one of them is abandoned and left to the elements. It is inevitable as the existence of matter from a vacuum. It just has to be. I see our trivial efforts to understand the needs of the universe as humorous; the way we argue about idols and gods, or property and borders, is akin to children fighting over an empty box- in the end both walking away, and nobody had a point to begin with, just a temporary release of emotion and a hope to have something others do not. Nobody really wanted the box, it was just too good to pass up. It was never about the box. Somebody else had it, so we wanted it too. Simple really. To see and understand the vastness of the universe, to the best ability of a Human, all senses and emotions considered, and not believe that universe is conscious…… well, that is something I cannot understand. The more we try to disprove a Conscious Universe, the more absurd the excuses become. On the flip side of that problem, the more we try to anthropomorphize ‘god’ and put a face on that awareness, the more problems we run into when expressing ourselves to others. We may be fighting over something as trivial as a language barrier, which says a lot about our primal selves. Nobody really understands what we are here for, what our deepest roots are, or what our destiny will be as a species or a planet. Plenty of people pretend to know, and for every false idol there will be a thousand eager followers, so untrusting of their own minds merely because they have not yet learned how to properly use them. They become trapped in a paradigm, indoctrinated in one way or another, and the groupthink is too strong to break free of. They become one of the millions of walking dead, zombies in their own minds and trapped in the system of someone else’s choosing. The cycle continues, and we end up with groups within groups within groups, just as it would be otherwise. It is, in a way, inevitable in a diverse world. It became about ‘Winning’. It became about who can achieve the biggest, the best and the finest. We tried on many different clothes to suit us as a people, and none of them could cover up our birthday suit to our satisfaction. We tried to tell God what to do, we tried to allow God to tell US what to do, we left god for another god, and another, and each generation found a new belief to suit what he thought to be reality, to explain the vast complexity of existence in a way everyone could understand. It never worked. We used archetypes and allegories, and the wise and educated of past generations encoded their discoveries into texts they hoped would survive. They discovered hidden languages in nature, ones that we call geometry, and mathematics. We used those tools, and those predictions and equations allowed us to create amazing works. We could see results. They knew to preserve those truths which CAN be known, no matter how we differ on our perceptions. Mathematics resides outside our senses, outside our language, and using geometry we can understand the space we inhabit, (however only slightly more than without it.) No amount of research, no amount of scientific study and no math equation, no matter how detailed and long, can explain the beauty of a sunset with a person you love, that last sliver of light, just as it passes beyond the horizon, like a glimmer of hope passing not away, but settling in for a brief interlude, soon to rise again. Hope is always there in the waiting, and the Phoenix will rise from the ashes of what we call civilization. One way, or another. Because it has to, it just has to. We are significant through our very insignificance- this is the very free will that allows us to move through space and time with our own intention. What do we make of it? That is for you to decide. -Carpo |

It just has to be.\n \n I see our trivial efforts to understand the needs of the universe as humorous; the way we argue about idols and gods, or property and borders, is akin to children fighting over an empty box- in the end both walking away, and nobody had a point to begin with, just a temporary release of emotion and a hope to have something others do not. \n Nobody really wanted the box, it was just too good to pass up. It was never about the box. Somebody else had it, so we wanted it too. Simple really.\n \n To see and understand the vastness of the universe, to the best ability of a Human, all senses and emotions considered, and not believe that universe is conscious…… well, that is something I cannot understand. It is, in a way, inevitable in a diverse world.\n \n It became about ‘Winning’. It never worked.\n \n We used archetypes and allegories, and the wise and educated of past generations encoded their discoveries into texts they hoped would survive. \n \n We are significant through our very insignificance- this is the very free will that allows us to move through space and time with our own intention. What do we make of it? That is for you to decide.\n\n-Carpo",

| body | Hey man, this is a great topic to write about but I'm having trouble reading it for the lack of paragraphs. Walls of text just turn people off so your message might be getting missed. Whilst I do agree that a lot of people are very stupid I think it's worse to not make an effort. If I see someone post something on Facebook where they are trying to be all intellectual but they haven't even bothered to spell check their post I always call them out on it. Why? Because I think you should make an effort no matter who you are talking to or what you are talking about. Those spelling mistakes are only going to make you look like you don't care. Please don't think I'm having a dig at you, I'm just trying to offer some constructive criticism on your writing so that you continue and get better. More paragraphs and maybe a picture or two (they don't even have to be relevant) will really help your views shoot up. I look forward to reading more from you. |

| body | I am just not so sure anymore.... is it okay to say that people are stupid? I think the term has many meanings, but for the purpose of this discussion we will define it as ‘Lacking intelligence or common sense’. In that case, I believe we can make the argument that there are many stupid people out there. Don’t be a sensitive sally. Hear me out. Can we save our species from self-annihilation? One might argue that humans are competitive by nature, or we could use the excuse that we are still at the mercy of our genetics. Our fear response causes us to panic and think less clearly. Our sexual urges cause us to make hasty decisions regarding safety, or we are willing to lose friends over jealousy. Surely these play a role in who we are, but enough with the bullshit and excuses already. We do have a choice as rational beings to look at the information for any situation and make a decision which will minimize harm others. Indeed sometimes we make the wrong choice due to our ignorance on a situation, and to be sure, that is exactly what this writing is about. ‘Ignorance’ seems to be a choice these days, and some people appear to go as far as to have ‘pride’ in their lack of insight. The enemy of these people are the ‘intellects’ and ‘smarty-pants’, or even science as a whole. Those scientists, always trying to ruin our beliefs, telling us things we don’t want to believe, so they become the enemy. Science…. The enemy? Intelligence… Something to avoid? What is happening here? Why are we so divided on issues and ideas that should be simple to discuss, and obvious to anyone who researches the issue? Are things really as two sided as they appear to be? Well the answer is far too complex to answer here, and covers many angles. We have unsettled science and scientific dogma, we have liars and charlatans trying to take our money, we have primal instincts and drives which cause us grief, and a complex zoo of neurochemicals that are all balanced carefully to give us our individual realities. That said, this is unapologetic, and although we do have different theories and opinions, some issues are too important to leave to ‘opinions.’ We have elected officials in office that cater to lobbyists for the oil industry, so they tell the people we need to mine more coal to be ‘self-reliant’. The people believe it, because they are also told it is ‘American’. We have clergymen and priests telling people they need to give their money to the church, or tell others how to live their lives, and they gladly do so. We have parents telling their children to behave or they will burn in ‘Hell’ for eternity, and they believe it. We have thousands of businesses vying for attention, telling you that you need their products, and without them you will be unworthy; and people happily drive to their local mall and wait in line for the latest iPhone. It is ridiculous.…. But if that moves you, who am I to say you shouldn’t? What business is it of mine? None. And I could care less if people want to buy shit they don’t need. Sure, the more we manufacture goods, the more resources are wasted, and the environment suffers; that does not mean we should not enjoy our lives. Commercialization is just part of life, and consumers have to do their own research. My point here is that the stupidity that affects someone’s personal life is their own. The stupidity I am trying to attack here is the confirmation bias and ignorance that allows a person in charge of a country to delude the people for profit- but it is even worse when they do it out of lack of knowledge. We are too afraid to just admit we don’t know something, and this causes many problems. Believing what you are told, by anyone, without doing your own research is tantamount to being a complete buffoon. No person can be trusted to know everything, but some folks would like to think they do. This is the problem we face- not wanting to know something because it is right, but because it makes us feel better, or confirms what we already believe. We use fallacies so often that the word has lost meaning. Reasoning requires careful consideration, not just repeating a line we heard from a friend, or on the news. Nor can we dismiss the media completely because someone else tells us to, or we don’t agree with the claims made. We must overcome the desire to be right, and to see our group is superior. This goes for politics, religion, family and the workplace. When the term ‘mainstream’ became an insult, I knew this had to be said. In the alternative news world, it has become normal to insult and demean anyone who is in the ‘mainstream’, as if a few people researching from their bedrooms on the internet are giving a full account of what is ‘really’ going on. The problem is, most of these people source their news from….you guessed it, mainstream media! Then they give their twist on it. We have become a nation of skeptics, which could be healthy if we were skeptical of the right things. But it seems very few people choose to look at things objectively. We are suspicious not of what we are being told by those in power, but what we are being told by millions of scientists around the world. For example, global temperatures have been rising steadily, and most climate science agrees that we are at least contributing to it. There is a specific CO2 footprint for fossil fuels, which can be measured and examined, compared to ice core samples and give us an idea of where we are. At the very least, we are polluting the air in the cities we live in, and air is an important thing for living. We need it. All this aside- there are millions who believe what a few rich oil barons have told them for so many decades- that it makes us energy independent, we need it to survive, it’s the Mercian way, on and on….and it is all bullshit. Meanwhile the rest of the world is working on new less polluting energy sources. The US, supposedly this great nation, is the only one not involved in the reduction of fossil fuels that the rest of the world agrees is important. I use this example because of the magnitude of ignorance that must go into believing such nonsense, and being able to claim that the whole of science is wrong, and they are right. It’s absurd, and ignorant, and needs to be addressed. I could have used religion as the example- but since there is no consensus on how to measure something that has no evidence, it would go nowhere. Personal beliefs are not a problem to me, I feel people deserve the right to believe what makes them happy. They do not, however, have the right to dictate public policy and law based on archaic beliefs about god, politics, race, sex or freedoms. We each deserve to live in a world where the people take a little bit of time to research things before they pretend to know. The more people who repeat something they heard, without confirmation, the more it becomes history. Much of our past was written by those who never witnessed the events they wrote of; stories passed down generations, dictated and twisted. This continues today. Our history is written by the people, and as long as we choose to live wearing blindfolds, we will continue to walk in the dark. |

"body": "I am just not so sure anymore.... is it okay to say that people are stupid? I think the term has many meanings, but for the purpose of this discussion we will define it as ‘Lacking intelligence or common sense’. In that case, I believe we can make the argument that there are many stupid people out there.\n Don’t be a sensitive sally. Hear me out.\n Can we save our species from self-annihilation? One might argue that humans are competitive by nature, or we could use the excuse that we are still at the mercy of our genetics. Our fear response causes us to panic and think less clearly. Our sexual urges cause us to make hasty decisions regarding safety, or we are willing to lose friends over jealousy. Surely these play a role in who we are, but enough with the bullshit and excuses already. We do have a choice as rational beings to look at the information for any situation and make a decision which will minimize harm others. \n Indeed sometimes we make the wrong choice due to our ignorance on a situation, and to be sure, that is exactly what this writing is about. ‘Ignorance’ seems to be a choice these days, and some people appear to go as far as to have ‘pride’ in their lack of insight. The enemy of these people are the ‘intellects’ and ‘smarty-pants’, or even science as a whole. Those scientists, always trying to ruin our beliefs, telling us things we don’t want to believe, so they become the enemy.\n Science…. The enemy? \nIntelligence… Something to avoid? \nWhat is happening here? Why are we so divided on issues and ideas that should be simple to discuss, and obvious to anyone who researches the issue? Are things really as two sided as they appear to be? \n Well the answer is far too complex to answer here, and covers many angles. We have unsettled science and scientific dogma, we have liars and charlatans trying to take our money, we have primal instincts and drives which cause us grief, and a complex zoo of neurochemicals that are all balanced carefully to give us our individual realities. That said, this is unapologetic, and although we do have different theories and opinions, some issues are too important to leave to ‘opinions.’ \n We have elected officials in office that cater to lobbyists for the oil industry, so they tell the people we need to mine more coal to be ‘self-reliant’. The people believe it, because they are also told it is ‘American’.\n We have clergymen and priests telling people they need to give their money to the church, or tell others how to live their lives, and they gladly do so. \n We have parents telling their children to behave or they will burn in ‘Hell’ for eternity, and they believe it. \n We have thousands of businesses vying for attention, telling you that you need their products, and without them you will be unworthy; and people happily drive to their local mall and wait in line for the latest iPhone. | body | Truth…..ah, the word of the day. It has been human nature to seek truth since it dawned on us we were going to die one day, and had no idea why, or where we would go. This may seem like an unlikely direction to take this, but I believe that the search for truth has been one of understanding, and the most crucial thing to understand is our place in the universe. Language developed, speech improved, but there was language long before we had a system of writing, or even a rudimentary vocabulary. We spoke through music, through art. One may not think these are ‘languages’, but if so they merely have not learned to speak it. Subtle languages like painting convey the deeper meaning of our lives, and tell us far more than any vocabulary class. The language of religions attempted to reconcile the ‘knowing’ with the ‘learning’, a process that over several thousand years has brought as much misery as it has ecstasy. Over time, rather than revere the beauty of God, we turned to fear the fiery wrath of evil. This attempt to switch from expression to written word, and turn it into a belief system, was more than successful; it grabbed people on a subconscious level, and the belief that someone else knows better than us was already in our genetics. We are predisposed just as any other ape to follow the alpha male- and the alpha was the one who was the most convincing, not the one with the most Truth. From the beginning of society, there have been people who are well aware that human beings are easily controlled if one claims to have the “truth”, and this appeals to our inner desire to know. Why spend a lifetime seeking to understand the world, when we can just have it preached to us each week? It’s not the fault of the people, it is just a condition of consciousness. We can only know so much, and the rest is filled in by others. This is how it has always been, no man or woman can confirm everything they claim to know. We have to trust in others. Interestingly enough, the language of mathematics was only recently discovered. We could count, we could add, but until algebra and geometry came into the picture we were blind to the language of the universe, or one of them at least. In modern physics we are finding that these formulas can explain far more than we could ever observe, which tells us that mathematics is not a human creation- it is a discovery of a formula woven within the fabric of the cosmos. Of course, the only reason we were able to discover this language of math was with the help of the scientific method, which forces us to use our own observations and experiments to find the truth around us. In past centuries, calculations would often dispute what the church believed to be true. Because of this they were often ignored at best, or the mathematicians imprisoned or executed at worst. This was also true for astronomers, as in the well-known case of Copernicus and Galileo. Both had their books banned, as was common practice in the 16th and 17th centuries. Copernicus believed in the heliocentric model of the solar system, but the church did not recognize this for over 200 years, and this is merely one of hundreds of stories and great teachers that were silenced for fear of the church losing ground with their inquisition. He was ordered to Rome to be punished, and his books were kept out of print. Imagine how many were lost to time we never learned about? The intention here is not to insult or ridicule religion- but to show that those primal circuits of fear lead us to question our own mortality, and that fear is eased by the belief in an afterlife. Whether or not there is an afterlife remains irrelevant, as what we do know is that many millions have been killed directly or indirectly by our beliefs, as letting go of these means letting down our guard. When we are on the defensive, we fail to listen even to the most rational, well thought out discussions. We become blind to truth. It is the author’s belief that we need something for security in our lives. There is nothing wrong with belief, and I find it as natural as breathing. That said, it is when our beliefs become ‘territorial’ that we have a problem, and this is almost always the case. This can be physical territory- bit also can be mental. We do not want others invading the land of our thoughts. The territorial circuit in our minds is subconscious, and in order to realize that we have to be very open and honest with ourselves. For many people this is not an option. Confronting someone because we believe they are incorrect in their beliefs goes nowhere, as those primal circuits are activated the moment we tell someone they are wrong. It is a difficult hurdle to overcome, which is why the best conversations plant a seed, but never, ever condescend or insult. I see more of this in the modern day, but I also know it has always been here. The philosophers of old, they risked their lives to tell the truth as they saw it. Scientists of the day were persecuted, imprisoned, ridiculed and put to death. They risked their lives not for family, friends or loved ones- but for TRUTH. As they saw it anyway. And this is an important point, because many people have been executed or imprisoned to protect a belief that turned out to be wrong a hundred years later. It’s not just religion- science has dogma as well, and this comes with a price. The 60’s movement toward peace in the world was based on their own ‘truth’, and each person had their own idea of what the end result should be in a Utopian Society. There is always someone with a better idea, but to put them into action is a different story. A few of the things we believe we know the Truth about are: -Belief in which God is real -What is the best form of government -Whether humans are warming the planet -How to proceed to the future as a planet -Whether to use fossil fuels or renewables -Who is telling us the truth. This last one is crucial. Who is telling us the truth anyway? Most of us like to think we are the masters of our own mind. We think we make choices, and decide what to believe. To what extent is this realistic? From the time we are born, we are being suggested along. When to eat, what is right and wrong, what life is all about, whether people are kind or not. We grow up as a black in an all-white community, or a white in an all-black community. A Jew in Palestine, or a Muslim in Israel. Each of these extremes shape who we are, how we feel about others, and what has led us to happiness in our lives. We grasp onto anything that works, and discard that which does not suit us. (Confirmation Bias) We may shift our politics on a whim, after learning something we were not aware of. People change religions every day, while others completely turn their lives around after a near death experience. ALL of these things shape our psyche, and this means finding the Truth, as simple as it may seem, is more than what we think we know. When it comes to our life experiences and how they shape opinion, we can see how we lead ourselves to believe in Truths when they are coming from others. In Aristotelian philosophy, there is are 3 components to the value of a person’s argument: “Ethos”; Ethos uses trust, and focuses first on the speaker, showing the speaker as a person of integrity and good character. “Pathos”; Pathos appeals to the emotions of the listener, seeking to excite them or otherwise arouse their interest. “Logos”; Logos focuses first on the argument, using cool logic and rational explanation, as well as demonstrable evidence. Understanding how people persuade us can show us a lot about how we think. Moreover, it can help show where we may be flawed in our thinking. At this juncture, you may be asking yourself “what does all this have to do with Truth?” Well I can assure you that in a day where the internet is in most homes, information is available to anyone who takes the time to seek it, and we are more connected than ever before……. We have less faith in what others tell us than ever before in history. Many have been duped into thinking that everything must be a lie, even the most basic stories on the news. What does this tell us? It tells me that while there are still many critical thinkers in the world, those who operate on the lower levels of thought, those who have not learned critical thinking, will be deluded by anyone who tells them what they want to hear, and anyone who disagrees must be a shill or a liar. Truth is not always comfortable. Truth has no beliefs itself, and does not care what you believe. That said, while there is indeed an objective truth about the world, our subjective views are shaped by our past experiences and desires. Each is unique. We perceive what we have learned to decipher, therefore if we see a ball, we know it is a ball. When it comes to more obscure matters, such as where did we come from? Where are we going? What does it mean to be human? Those are a little more difficult to tackle, and so far, nobody has been convincing enough to know the truth as everyone sees it. Confirmation bias is everywhere. Liars are everywhere. Charlatans are around every corner. On top of the millions of people who willingly lie to you in order to get your money, there are millions more who think they are telling the truth, but have deluded themselves into believing they have the one answer to your problem. We choose to believe them and we choose how well to research something before making an assumption. We also have to realize that some things just cannot be known for sure. As a US citizen in the 21st century, I am pretty sure that there was an Ottoman Empire. I am pretty sure that there is indeed a country called France across the ocean. I believe that the moon is real, and the Earth is round. Have I been to France? No. Been to space? No. Could I ever confirm there were any empires in the past beyond what exists today? Of course not. But I can piece together what I learn and weigh the evidence. The biggest lies are told by those seeking energy, and in the modern world energy comes in the form of meal tickets. Using this idea one can weigh the truth about something with what the person has to gain. If they tell you they have a machine that makes cupcakes, you can be rather sure it might be true. Even if it isn’t, it harms nobody to believe it. If they tell you they have a machine that will cure your cancer for $59, then there may be reason to suspect. Regardless of what we think we know, we are at the mercy of what we have learned and those before us have learned. So when seeking the Truth, ask yourself first and foremost if it even matters. If it does matter, then weigh the evidence. Set aside all bias, look from a new perspective. Seek our literature refuting it, seek out every angle, even the most extreme cases of bias. Seeking Truth means setting aside belief. This is a challenge we all must face if we are to have a future where people can begin trusting one another again. We must punish and demean those who do lie, and boycott businesses that make false claims, It is up to us, the consumer, the individuals, to begin telling each other the truth not for profit, but for the sake of a better understanding and a future where we can live in harmony. Lies are not always intentional. Many are merely repeated over and over until they are believed. We must start over on many fronts, but that does not discount what we do know, the language of art, the language of music, and the language of mathematics. To come full circle here, these languages cannot lie without being noticed. They cannot be falsified, or ruin a person. What you see, or hear, is what you get. We must re-learn the language of the Earth we live on, and the universe which contains it. While most of us will never be mathematicians, we are fortunate enough to have the hardware if we so choose to pursue it. With art and music however, even the most novice human being can learn to speak in no time. For this, I urge all reading this to take up any form of art, if you do not already. With this language, you can learn to distinguish the truth from the lies. You will see patterns emerge you never could have imagined. It may be a pipe dream to imagine a world of artists, but how many artists do you know that are mean spirited? Liars? Thieves? It is my belief that these Truths through art teach us Truths about life, and we see them reflected in the balance of colors, the septenary of notes, the reflection of scales….. and the beating heart of each one of us. Truth is not in the eye of the beholder; it is in the Heart. -Carpo |

This may seem like an unlikely direction to take this, but I believe that the search for truth has been one of understanding, and the most crucial thing to understand is our place in the universe.\n Language developed, speech improved, but there was language long before we had a system of writing, or even a rudimentary vocabulary. We spoke through music, through art. One may not think these are ‘languages’, but if so they merely have not learned to speak it. Subtle languages like painting convey the deeper meaning of our lives, and tell us far more than any vocabulary class. \n The language of religions attempted to reconcile the ‘knowing’ with the ‘learning’, a process that over several thousand years has brought as much misery as it has ecstasy. We have to trust in others.\n Interestingly enough, the language of mathematics was only recently discovered. We could count, we could add, but until algebra and geometry came into the picture we were blind to the language of the universe, or one of them at least. In modern physics we are finding that these formulas can explain far more than we could ever observe, which tells us that mathematics is not a human creation- it is a discovery of a formula woven within the fabric of the cosmos.\n Of course, the only reason we were able to discover this language of math was with the help of the scientific method, which forces us to use our own observations and experiments to find the truth around us. Imagine how many were lost to time we never learned about?\n The intention here is not to insult or ridicule religion- but to show that those primal circuits of fear lead us to question our own mortality, and that fear is eased by the belief in an afterlife. We do not want others invading the land of our thoughts.\n The territorial circuit in our minds is subconscious, and in order to realize that we have to be very open and honest with ourselves. There is always someone with a better idea, but to put them into action is a different story.\n A few of the things we believe we know the Truth about are:\n -Belief in which God is real\n-What is the best form of government \n-Whether humans are warming the planet\n-How to proceed to the future as a planet\n-Whether to use fossil fuels or renewables\n-Who is telling us the truth.\n\n This last one is crucial. Who is telling us the truth anyway? Most of us like to think we are the masters of our own mind. We think we make choices, and decide what to believe. To what extent is this realistic?\n From the time we are born, we are being suggested along. ALL of these things shape our psyche, and this means finding the Truth, as simple as it may seem, is more than what we think we know.\n When it comes to our life experiences and how they shape opinion, we can see how we lead ourselves to believe in Truths when they are coming from others. In Aristotelian philosophy, there is are 3 components to the value of a person’s argument:\n“Ethos”; Ethos uses trust, and focuses first on the speaker, showing the speaker as a person of integrity and good character.\n“Pathos”; Pathos appeals to the emotions of the listener, seeking to excite them or otherwise arouse their interest.\n“Logos”; Logos focuses first on the argument, using cool logic and rational explanation, as well as demonstrable evidence.\n Understanding how people persuade us can show us a lot about how we think. It tells me that while there are still many critical thinkers in the world, those who operate on the lower levels of thought, those who have not learned critical thinking, will be deluded by anyone who tells them what they want to hear, and anyone who disagrees must be a shill or a liar.\n Truth is not always comfortable. Truth has no beliefs itself, and does not care what you believe. \n That said, while there is indeed an objective truth about the world, our subjective views are shaped by our past experiences and desires. \n Confirmation bias is everywhere. The biggest lies are told by those seeking energy, and in the modern world energy comes in the form of meal tickets.\n Using this idea one can weigh the truth about something with what the person has to gain. We must punish and demean those who do lie, and boycott businesses that make false claims, It is up to us, the consumer, the individuals, to begin telling each other the truth not for profit, but for the sake of a better understanding and a future where we can live in harmony.\n Lies are not always intentional. \n With art and music however, even the most novice human being can learn to speak in no time. For this, I urge all reading this to take up any form of art, if you do not already. With this language, you can learn to distinguish the truth from the lies. You will see patterns emerge you never could have imagined. It may be a pipe dream to imagine a world of artists, but how many artists do you know that are mean spirited? Liars? Thieves? It is my belief that these Truths through art teach us Truths about life, and we see them reflected in the balance of colors, the septenary of notes, the reflection of scales….. and the beating heart of each one of us.\nTruth is not in the eye of the beholder; it is in the Heart. \n-Carpo",

| body | The differences in opinion regarding political parties, freedoms, same sex marriage, equality or immigration are not caused by age, although those born in the computer generation surely have a different perspective. This is dependent on the person however, and not the age. I was born in 1975, so depending on who you ask and what years they are basing the 'millennial' on, I fell in generation X. There are people I grew up with that had liberal values, and those who did not. It completely depended on the social norms within their areas and within the construct of the family unit, which has been on the decline for some time. Those who were born in the baby boomer generation were given the benefit of not knowing what the world truly operated like, and even those who read consistently and kept up with the news were limited by the technology that allowed the information to be shared. News, media, internet.... these all developed over time. We humans don't much like change, as much as we like to think we do. We are FORCED to make changes because we see what is not working around us. As we were exposed to new realities, we saw that the world was not as we had been told. Our ‘leaders’ have been glossing over the important details for centuries, as to not ‘disrupt’ the economy. We now know that the US economy is hanging by a thread, and nobody can stop the machine by throwing more fiat money at it. What is my point then? Okay, let’s just start with the term ‘Snowflake’. The idea that liberals today are delicate and easily bothered, or fragile and easily fooled into becoming a “Social Justice Warrior’. I will just say that a little psychology lesson will show how we project our own insecurities onto others. The conservative viewpoint is to ‘keep things are they are, traditionally’, which fits with our innate desire to have a routine, to know what is coming, so we are not surprised or shocked. This is a fragility in itself, the fear of change is perhaps a better definition of a snowflake. I WOULD however like to say that I completely sympathize with those conservatives who are opposed to kids wearing masks, burning cars and garbage cans, and trying to save everything and everyone they can. I DO see how that appears to others, and I am right there with them. There are reasons we have a division of ideals, and we cannot just assume that half the people are stupid on either side. We can assume them to be ignorant, but if we are honest, we are all ignorant of how the nation should operate, let alone the world. For an 18 year old liberal kid to tell a 65 year old that his values have always been shit, one can expect to get an earful. It is true that over time as we age we tend to become more stuck in our ways, but we have to remember that we CHOSE which way to think. At one point we were influenced because of things we learned that conflicted with what we wanted to believe. IF we are honest with ourselves, and that is the key. I find that the idea of giving equal treatment, freedoms, money or rights to everyone can throw off the balance of a nation. The idea that we are somehow better off with a variety of classes is not a new idea- but one that continues to create much hostility; and the belief that we can all be equal, that we all have the same abilities, and that we are all entitled to the same share is bullshit as well. We EARN our way. So in a way, yes, a generation was raised differently, and this gave many people more liberal values. But they were NOT only due to entitlement. My parents’ generation was told to work hard, shut up and go with the flow. Don’t make waves. In the 1960’s however, that same generation produced some of the most liberal resistance groups ever to protest in this nation, and it was for the cause of stopping a war that was unnecessary. Right wingers at the time chastised those who protested, calling them traitors, socialists and communists. History has shown us now that those ‘hippies’ were PROTECTING the lives of their own people, to stop a pointless war. They were told to trust the US government, they were told it was necessary, and they were drafted and sent off to die, as in so many other wars. If protesting forced slave labor for the war machine is somehow included in the SJW analogy, perhaps those who oppose protesting and Left Wing values might see that there are reasons beyond health care, beyond racism, and far beyond entitlements that we ascribe to it. If I as a rational human being can change my mind as I receive new information, I assume anyone can, if they are honest with themselves. What I am trying to convey here, in essence, is we must stop seeing in black and white. Nobody wants to sit around complaining about being marginalized, or ripped off by their neighbors, but that is what is happening. We can’t close our eyes and assume that racism, sexism, homophobia and drug use are accepted by everyone. We can, however, realize that the decisions a person makes for their own lives should NOT be infringed on if nobody is harmed. That said, many conservatives seem that they support the US government telling us what to put in our bodies, where we can go and what we can say. They support more and more laws to protect themselves, while prohibiting other humans from doing what they are entitled to as a free being. Likewise, many Liberals go the opposite route- wanting to abolish laws they see as faulty, while imposing restrictions on the free market, to stop corruption. Freedom is freedom. We cannot stop the war machine by screaming at it, and we cannot preserve our freedoms if we are causing other harm. We may be best to come together and realize that we are all flawed in one way or another. We are all delicate and unsure about ourselves at times, and admitting that is not a weakness. Somewhere between the extremes of political views there is a middle ground. Some would call this ‘wishy-washy’ and tell you that you have to pick a side. This is not a millennial thing, it is across all age groups. You don’t. Just be a human. Unlearn everything you thought you knew, and accept that many people stick their necks out not to get attention, not always to cause destruction, not always to be right….but to help their fellow man. Some of us are unhappy in life and that is the way it has always been. But we CAN try to minimize that suffering as much as possible, and try not to project our own dissatisfaction onto the world. We only know what we know, and a man alone knows nothing. Contrast brings understanding. The number of millennials who are “SJW’s” are no greater than the past generations- the difference today is the connectedness we share. There are plenty of liberal minded middle aged Americans, but the older we get the more reluctant we are to tell it like it is, often we keep our opinions to ourselves, but this is not progressive! We are all snowflakes. Let’s make an igloo. |

\n What is my point then? Okay, let’s just start with the term ‘Snowflake’. The idea that liberals today are delicate and easily bothered, or fragile and easily fooled into becoming a “Social Justice Warrior’. I will just say that a little psychology lesson will show how we project our own insecurities onto others. The conservative viewpoint is to ‘keep things are they are, traditionally’, which fits with our innate desire to have a routine, to know what is coming, so we are not surprised or shocked. This is a fragility in itself, the fear of change is perhaps a better definition of a snowflake. \n I WOULD however like to say that I completely sympathize with those conservatives who are opposed to kids wearing masks, burning cars and garbage cans, and trying to save everything and everyone they can. At one point we were influenced because of things we learned that conflicted with what we wanted to believe.\nIF we are honest with ourselves, and that is the key.\n I find that the idea of giving equal treatment, freedoms, money or rights to everyone can throw off the balance of a nation. The idea that we are somehow better off with a variety of classes is not a new idea- but one that continues to create much hostility; and the belief that we can all be equal, that we all have the same abilities, and that we are all entitled to the same share is bullshit as well. We EARN our way. \n So in a way, yes, a generation was raised differently, and this gave many people more liberal values. They were told to trust the US government, they were told it was necessary, and they were drafted and sent off to die, as in so many other wars.\n If protesting forced slave labor for the war machine is somehow included in the SJW analogy, perhaps those who oppose protesting and Left Wing values might see that there are reasons beyond health care, beyond racism, and far beyond entitlements that we ascribe to it. If I as a rational human being can change my mind as I receive new information, I assume anyone can, if they are honest with themselves. \nWhat I am trying to convey here, in essence, is we must stop seeing in black and white. Likewise, many Liberals go the opposite route- wanting to abolish laws they see as faulty, while imposing restrictions on the free market, to stop corruption.\n Freedom is freedom. We cannot stop the war machine by screaming at it, and we cannot preserve our freedoms if we are causing other harm.\n We may be best to come together and realize that we are all flawed in one way or another. We are all delicate and unsure about ourselves at times, and admitting that is not a weakness. Somewhere between the extremes of political views there is a middle ground. Some would call this ‘wishy-washy’ and tell you that you have to pick a side. This is not a millennial thing, it is across all age groups.\n You don’t. Contrast brings understanding.\nThe number of millennials who are “SJW’s” are no greater than the past generations- the difference today is the connectedness we share. There are plenty of liberal minded middle aged Americans, but the older we get the more reluctant we are to tell it like it is, often we keep our opinions to ourselves, but this is not progressive!\n We are all snowflakes. Let’s make an igloo.",

| body | Hello there to whomever may read this post.... My name is Carpo, I was sent to Steemit by a few of my subscribers on YouTube, which I have had a channel for the past 5 years discussing philosophy, life, whatever is on my mind. Often I have ideas and writings to share, and YouTube is not the best place for posts. Steemit seems awesome for that purpose, and I cannot stand Facebook. I use it reluctantly because it's the only way to communicate with some people! I just started today, so I am getting the feel for it. Seems great so far!! Anyway, feel free to visit me on YouTube under the same name, carpo719. I do love to share and learn with everyone else in this crazy thing we call life. :) Take care- |
