      "body": "Sixteen years have seemingly flown by since that fateful morning on 9/11\nthat the United States and the world was changed forever. As life\nendures, every year, on that never-to-be-forgotten day, we stop and\nbecome one to pay homage to those lost because of ignorance and\njealousy.\n\nAs 9/11 approached in 2017 mother nature is pounding her almighty fist,\ntossing at us hurricanes, earthquakes, and fires like we have never\nwitnessed before. It is as if she is shouting at us to stop and work as\none again to find peace. As we battle together against natural\ndisasters, we all will also be remembering the day that a very unnatural\ntragedy took place.\n\nThe years have flown by watching our children grow. The new World Trade\nCenter tower has been completed and now stands tall into the sky as a\nnew beacon of hope, freedom and remembrance. 9/11 will never be\nforgotten.\n\n**Terror Hits Home on 9/11**\n\nThe New York metro area on that Tuesday 9/11, 2001 was an amazing clear\nand beautiful morning with the sun gleaming in a lovely blue sky. On\nthat morning, just as every other early a.m., as I drove to work, I\nwatched the planes fly over my car towards JFK airport in their normal\nlanding pattern.\n\nRelishing the picturesque day, as I listened to music on the car radio,\nnews suddenly broke in reporting that the North World Trade Tower was\nhit by a plane. Immediately I thought, “What inexperienced pilot was so\nthoughtless or arrogant to fly a plane so close to the tall buildings.”\nWho knew that soon our world would be changed forever, for no one\nimmediately imagined that we were now in a war zone.\n\nBy the time I entered my office the news of the second plane hitting was\nnow coming over the air waves. Listening to the news in disbelief, it is\nbroadcasted that an airplane just hit the Pentagon as well. It is now\nrevealed that terrorists had hijacked planes to literally use as bombs\nto attack our country.\n\nStunned and shocked we listen to the report of a fourth airplane\ncrashing in a Pennsylvania field, mourning the loss of the brave souls\nwho fought to down the terrorists taking over their plane. More news\nstunned our lives with the falling of the towers. Within a matter of\nmoments, it was abundantly clear that war had come to our shores. New\nYork, Washington, Pennsylvania... what was to be next.\n\nOur country had been attacked a mere 25 short miles away from my home. I\nrushed back to my small town to pick up my then six-year-old daughter\nfrom first grade. I hugged her tightly knowing we were together alive\nand still safe. As parents rushed to their children on that day all we\nknew was that we needed to be with our loved ones. The school did not\ncall us... it was our hearts that took over.\n\n**Life Forever Changed on 9/11 2001**\n\nDrawn to the beach on 9/11 16-years ago, not to relax in the sunshine\nbut to view the skyline, we prayed together as we witnessed the smoke\nrising from Ground Zero. Eerily the smoke created a shadow that appeared\nto be a likeness of Bin Laden’s face. Every day after, the smoke\ncontinued to fill the sky and the constant sound of fighter jets flying\nabove clearly gave us a reminder to never forget.\n\nWith the days and weeks that followed, even as the smoke subsided, life\nwould never again be what we remembered as our \"normal.”\n\nBefore 9/11 my work as an interior designer was thriving and busy. After\n9/11 our country was thrust into war and the economy suffered.\n\nI now sit here writing my words to the world, something that perhaps I\nwould never be doing if not for that day. I always enjoyed writing for\nmyself, never thinking that one day I would spread my words to the\nmasses as a journalist. After 9/11 life forever changed.\n\nThat day of horror caused many of us to relish what we have and to\nreinvent ourselves in the wake of an economic downfall. Writing became\nmore than just a creative outlet for me. Soul searching assisted me in\nfinding the courage to use my innate wordsmith abilities to spread my\nknowledge, assist others, and to be a part of our huge world.\n\nDespite terrorists’ actions and attempts following that September day in\n2001, the US has risen from the ashes to gain strength with every year\nthat passes. Painting at the age of four, Michael’s\nskills were recognized by his Kindergarten teacher. Taking notice of the\nvery young savant, the teacher advised Cartellone’s parents to inspire\nhim to expand his talent. Being very young\nmany of the principals of formal art training went over my head but I\nstill was able to pick up knowledge. My first painting was of the\nPlanters Peanut Guy. I found it in my parent’s attic and I still have\nit. I studied all through grade school and high school and still to this\nday I remember everything I learned and use it.\n\n**CRW:** How did it feel heading to art school when you were so young?\n\n**MC:** I was very excited because it was never something regarding\ndrawing and painting that I never needed to be nudged to do. Much like\nmy drums, my parents never had to remind me to do a lesson.\n\n**CRW:** How did you discover drumming in the midst of creating with\npaints?\n\n**MC:** I have an older cousin named Bert who is a drummer and I would\nbeg him to let me use his drum set. My parents noticed how fixated I was\nso signed me up with Bert’s drum teacher. I am indebted to my older\ncousin for being so patient. I am eternally grateful to my parents and\nmy family for being so supportive of the arts.\n\n**CRW:** What inspired you to move to New York City and not the west\ncoast?\n\n**MC:** When I was still living in Cleveland playing in the bar scene I\nbegan corresponding with a well-established British musician named Eddie\nJobson. I was a big fan of his. I moved to New York when I was 22 to\nwork with Eddie on a recording project. That recording project was not a\npaid position so I got a job working in the garment center in a\nchildren’s company hand painting designs.\n\n**CRW:** Did you find yourself disappointed that drumming overtook your\ntalent as a painter?\n\n**MC:** No because once I started drumming at age 9 that did move to the\nforefront. I never stopped painting and did sell work even as a\nteenager. I am happy that the drumming took to the forefront because it\nhelped forge my music career and now my music career is helping me\nbecome known as an artist.\n\n**CRW:** Your works are so varied from abstract to realism, it is clear\nthat you have been influenced by many artists. What famous artists have\nintrigued you the most and why?\n\n**MC:** Michelangelo which is apparent with the four Davids that I\npainted. Both his sculpture, but his paintings are very important to me.\nNot only for my family background but how much I appreciated his ability\nand the way his work has inspired artists for generations. Among other\nmasters that have inspired me are Van Gough, Caravaggio, and Magritte.\n\n**CRW:** What was your inspiration behind your four paintings of\n“David”? Are you going to be upset if they are not sold as a group?\n\n**MC:** I had the idea that it would be interesting to paint him\nrepresenting four eras of art so I simply did some research of different\nartists during different periods of art. I dwindled them down to four\nartists that would complement each other spanning the period from 1889\nto 1984. Ideally, I would like them to live together because of the theme\nand the history together but I do feel that each does stand on its own.\n\nA wonderful six-minute documentary [showcases\nMichael](https://youtu.be/zToWNHodHGQ) explaining his “The Four Davids”\nin detail.\n\n**CRW:** What is your favorite medium to work with and what inspires you\nto create in one master style versus another?\n\n**MC:** My favorite medium out of necessity is acrylic because it dries\nvery quickly and I can paint as I travel with Lynyrd Skynyrd. I never\nreally know what I will paint next. I get inspired by photos that I take\nand store away. I discover what I am going to paint next when a photo\ntriggers an idea. As I travel with the band I make sure to visit local\nmuseums and take photos.\n\n**CRW:** What is next for you?\n\n**MC:** A showing in my home town of Cleveland, Ohio. I have waited to\nhave a show in Cleveland until the timing was right so now we are\nplanning a gallery event this summer.\n\n**CRW:** Do you have dreams of mixing your painting talents with your\ndrumming talents and if so in what way?\n\n**MC:** I actually already did just that about 10-years ago. I did a\ngroup of paintings of life on the road with the band in a color series.\nEvery one of them was painted in various hotel rooms while I was on\ntour. When I kicked off my art work in a very public way I began by\nshowing my Road series. Each painting is named for its color. What famous artists have\nintrigued you the most and why?\n\n**MC:** Michelangelo which is apparent with the four Davids that I\npainted. Both his sculpture, but his paintings are very important to me.\nNot only for my family background but how much I appreciated his ability\nand the way his work has inspired artists for generations.       "body": "Michael Cartellone of Lynyrd Skynyrd fame has more than drums to play.\nCartellone has recently revealed his amazing ability to make music\nwith paint on the canvas as well. Painting at the age of four, Michael’s\nskills were recognized by his Kindergarten teacher. Taking notice of the\nvery young savant, the teacher advised Cartellone’s parents to inspire\nhim to expand his talent. The future Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer had his first\nprofessional engagement at only 11-years old playing in his first bar\ngig. As others took notice of his drumming talent, the artist’s painting\nwas left in the studio. Michael played the live music scene in Cleveland\nwith several bands. He took to the world-renowned Cleveland Agora\nBallroom stage with The Notion, Boy Wonder, Jewel of the Deep and\nMoonlight Drive.\n\nTo build his career dreams in music and as a fine artist, [Michael\nCartellone](http://www.michaelcartellone.com/index.php) moved to New\nYork City when he was 22. The gifted artist utilized his talent as a\npainter to support himself while he pursued work in the music world. A\ntrue inspiration, Michael forged his own way discovering ways to create\nopportunities to showcase his music abilities. He found himself playing\nwith former Roxy Music and U.K. keyboardist Eddie Jobson and then\njoining the Solo band of Styx guitarist, Tommy Shaw.\n\nAfter two years of playing with Shaw, Michael and Tommy became members\nof the multi-platinum band, Damn Yankees. From this point, Cartellone’s\ndrumming career took flight recording and touring with famed artists. He\ndrummed his way to stardom working with John Fogerty, Peter Frampton,\nJohn Wetton, Freddie Mercury, Cher, Adrian Belew, and the legendary\nLynyrd Skynyrd.\n\n### Meet Michael Cartellone\n\nStill drumming his love of music into admirer’s hearts, Michael’s\nartistic talents as a painter have now been uncovered as well. It is evident that this man is as much talented as he is modest\nabout his abilities.\n\n**Carol Ruth Weber:** What was the first art you remember creating way\nback when you were four?\n\n**Michael Cartellone:** The kindergarten teacher had seen something in\nwhat I was doodling and told my parents so they enrolled me in the\nCleveland Institute of Art in their summer program. Being very young\nmany of the principals of formal art training went over my head but I\nstill was able to pick up knowledge. My first painting was of the\nPlanters Peanut Guy. I found it in my parent’s attic and I still have\nit. I studied all through grade school and high school and still to this\nday I remember everything I learned and use it.\n\n**CRW:** How did it feel heading to art school when you were so young?\n\n**MC:** I was very excited because it was never something regarding\ndrawing and painting that I never needed to be nudged to do. Much like\nmy drums, my parents never had to remind me to do a lesson.\n\n**CRW:** How did you discover drumming in the midst of creating with\npaints?\n\n**MC:** I have an older cousin named Bert who is a drummer and I would\nbeg him to let me use his drum set. My parents noticed how fixated I was\nso signed me up with Bert’s drum teacher. I am indebted to my older\ncousin for being so patient. I am eternally grateful to my parents and\nmy family for being so supportive of the arts.\n\n**CRW:** What inspired you to move to New York City and not the west\ncoast?\n\n**MC:** When I was still living in Cleveland playing in the bar scene I\nbegan corresponding with a well-established British musician named Eddie\nJobson. I was a big fan of his. I moved to New York when I was 22 to\nwork with Eddie on a recording project.
