| title | Side decks and a trailer |
| body | Daylight savings has come and gone, taking the evening light with it. This makes weekday progress a little slower, but things are still moving forward. I’ve managed to get internalbframes and deck frames completed and am ready to install the plywood side decks and forward casting deck. This process will require careful planing and measurement of the plywood to get it flush with the rails and frames. I played with cardboard planning to get a feel for the width of the decks and determine whether or not to add a rear deck. Meanwhile, a missing component of this project has been the means of moving the boat to the water and back. I needed a trailer. I found trailers of every style and condition on Craigslist, and ultimately found a sweet deal for a single axle bass boat trailer for $350. The trailer is built from c-channel and has minimal surface rust. All is in order , but mods must be made to level the bunks for accepting a flat bottom boat. A few evening meetings will limit progress this week but decks will be installed this weekend ,and my motor is expected in port as well. The rest is a matter of deliberate use of free time towards the project to finished by a he end of the year. I’ve considered naming the boat at the recommendation of friends and family. I think a crowd-sourced name contest makes a lot of sense, considering that the entire project evolved from the web, followed by purchases of equipment and materials from the web, advice from the web, and new friendships from the web. I worry, however, that I’ll end up with “boaty mcboatface” like the famous boat naming contest from last year. |

| title | The Big Flip and other Progress |
| body | Watching Paint Dry and the Big Flip....a light at the end of the tunnel Well the last few weeks have been slow in progress, but that doesn't mean big steps weren't made. After sealing the exterior with the penetrating epoxy, it was time to apply the bottom paint. My goal is to only flip the boat once, so getting the paint below the waterline complete is essential. I can handle the remaining exterior surface easy enough in the upright position. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SqyGQ-0zWww/Wez9spTrzvI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/6bLBhnVInHc3AwgWU61s6_ssXB75cL0wgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1012.JPG Since the boat will live on a trailer, it's not necessary to use a traditional ablative bottom paint that repels barnacles, decaying organisms and other such issues, rather a simple topside paint will do. Lowe's hardware store has a Rustoleum Topside Paint that I've used on past projects with pretty good success. I chose a glossy black for the bottom, applying it with a roller in a total of four coats. With the painting and drying taking place over the course of about a week, it was time to flip the boat! Preparing for the Big Flip I spent an undue amount of time pontificating on the various methods for flipping the boat over, and came up with several options, all including ropes, come-alongs, straps and pulleys. I bought the tackle and came home to start rigging. Upon review of the procedure in my mind, I decided that a single-handed approach was risky, and that the rafters in the shop were insufficient for the task. I promptly returned all purchased items and moved on to Plan B (D?,E?). Plan B was to roll the boat out of the shop to the front yard, whereby the boat could be rolled over in the grass. I hoisted up each end of the boat and trimmed the stem and stern posts shorter and installed casters on each post. The casters where cheap little 200 lb. numbers from Harbor Freight but adequate for the task at hand. This worked out well, and I had the boat sitting in the driveway in short time. Stern posts trimmed and casters installed. By happenstance, three able men were hanging out in the driveway across the street, and were happy to come over and assist with the rolling of the boat. With an emphasis on being gentle with the, as of yet, unsupported sides, the boat was right-side-up in about ten seconds. Now all I had to do was create some dollies to roll the boat back inside. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N1dql-95P-A/Wez-APIq6XI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/aq9z2spvI1Qz2MIK6LkM05ow8p7ldszhACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1016.JPG A view of the boat listing on the edge of the ditch. Topside Construction Once back in the shop, it was time to start cleaning up glue and begin construction of rubrail/gunnel/sheer clamps and framing. I started ripping the rubrails and promptly burned out my circular saw. This saw didn't last for a single project, having failed to earn it's $18.49 worth of cost. I shopped locally and had trouble finding a model that was both reasonably priced for my purposes and also had a rip guide. To Amazon I went, and found a Wen brand saw that fit the bill. The Wen brand of tools was new to me, but the saw works well. Rubrails have been ripped with bevels corresponding to the side flairs, stretched for a few hours, and then they were glued and screwed into place. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yH_4rnbYrc0/We0BYizUFUI/AAAAAAAAAGw/ghKveD-oI0s1Rv3G6C2qLcXz9u_B5WcUACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1021.JPG Bad Saw https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O5c3yagsm5g/We0DAlBsrUI/AAAAAAAAAHM/uMp3SNeJApM-CE6zD9rtBnWmLZSnv_mEACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1173.JPG Good Saw https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aQJF_8J-lDI/We0BxgAdwtI/AAAAAAAAAG8/D4zoFzWvWR4IGMH8JYv1bfuDuj-W1VXhgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1017.JPG The first rubrail getting a good stretching https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DEOrLgGl_ro/We0BS4hfLbI/AAAAAAAAAGg/j-OJ7HjucPMNca2KEn5sb2T11BF_JrW2ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1020.JPG Shop foreman and safety officer inspecting the craft. At the time of writing this I have to start making some decisions regarding the furniture to be installed. I go back and forth between center consoles, side consoles and Samson posts for steering. Also under consideration are forward casting decks vs. coolers, seating arrangements, and how wide I want the side decks to be. I'll start playing with various cardboard mockups this week and get the four frames installed in the meantime. |

"body": "Watching Paint Dry and the Big Flip....a light at the end of the tunnel\nWell the last few weeks have been slow in progress, but that doesn't mean big steps weren't made. After sealing the exterior with the penetrating epoxy, it was time to apply the bottom paint. My goal is to only flip the boat once, so getting the paint below the waterline complete is essential. I can handle the remaining exterior surface easy enough in the upright position. \nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SqyGQ-0zWww/Wez9spTrzvI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/6bLBhnVInHc3AwgWU61s6_ssXB75cL0wgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1012.JPG\n\nSince the boat will live on a trailer, it's not necessary to use a traditional ablative bottom paint that repels barnacles, decaying organisms and other such issues, rather a simple topside paint will do. Lowe's hardware store has a Rustoleum Topside Paint that I've used on past projects with pretty good success. I chose a glossy black for the bottom, applying it with a roller in a total of four coats. With the painting and drying taking place over the course of about a week, it was time to flip the boat!\n\nPreparing for the Big Flip\nI spent an undue amount of time pontificating on the various methods for flipping the boat over, and came up with several options, all including ropes, come-alongs, straps and pulleys. I bought the tackle and came home to start rigging. Upon review of the procedure in my mind, I decided that a single-handed approach was risky, and that the rafters in the shop were insufficient for the task. I promptly returned all purchased items and moved on to Plan B (D?,E?). \n\nPlan B was to roll the boat out of the shop to the front yard, whereby the boat could be rolled over in the grass. I hoisted up each end of the boat and trimmed the stem and stern posts shorter and installed casters on each post. The casters where cheap little 200 lb. numbers from Harbor Freight but adequate for the task at hand. This worked out well, and I had the boat sitting in the driveway in short time.\n\n\n\nStern posts trimmed and casters installed.\nBy happenstance, three able men were hanging out in the driveway across the street, and were happy to come over and assist with the rolling of the boat. With an emphasis on being gentle with the, as of yet, unsupported sides, the boat was right-side-up in about ten seconds. Now all I had to do was create some dollies to roll the boat back inside. \n\n\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N1dql-95P-A/Wez-APIq6XI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/aq9z2spvI1Qz2MIK6LkM05ow8p7ldszhACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_1016.JPG\n\n\nA view of the boat listing on the edge of the ditch.\nTopside Construction\nOnce back in the shop, it was time to start cleaning up glue and begin construction of rubrail/gunnel/sheer clamps and framing. Rubrails have been ripped with bevels corresponding to the side flairs, stretched for a few hours, and then they were glued and screwed into place.\n\nhttps://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yH_4rnbYrc0/We0BYizUFUI/AAAAAAAAAGw/ghKveD-oI0s1Rv3G6C2qLcXz9u_B5WcUACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1021.JPG\n\nBad Saw\n\nhttps://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O5c3yagsm5g/We0DAlBsrUI/AAAAAAAAAHM/uMp3SNeJApM-CE6zD9rtBnWmLZSnv_mEACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1173.JPG\nGood Saw\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aQJF_8J-lDI/We0BxgAdwtI/AAAAAAAAAG8/D4zoFzWvWR4IGMH8JYv1bfuDuj-W1VXhgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1017.JPG\nThe first rubrail getting a good stretching\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DEOrLgGl_ro/We0BS4hfLbI/AAAAAAAAAGg/j-OJ7HjucPMNca2KEn5sb2T11BF_JrW2ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1020.JPG\n\nShop foreman and safety officer inspecting the craft.\n\nAt the time of writing this I have to start making some decisions regarding the furniture to be installed. I go back and forth between center consoles, side consoles and Samson posts for steering. Also under consideration are forward casting decks vs. coolers, seating arrangements, and how wide I want the side decks to be. | body | Well the last few weeks have been occupied by the painting of the bottom. Roll on a coat and wait till the next day. I painted the bottom up to the approximate waterline with a black topside paint (no need for an ablative bottom paint for a trailered boat). After four coats I was ready to flip her over. Many ideas were tossed about in an effort to solve the problem of turning the boat over without damaging the boat, needing many people, altering the workshop or spending money. I finally settled on a simple solution. I hoisted each end of the boat up enough to trim the stem and stern posts shorter and install casters. After that, rolling the boat out into the front yard was a cinch. A few hands were charting in the street who kindly agreed to assist with the rolling of the boat, all of which took about twenty seconds. Next I removed the casters and used them to build dollies for each end and lifted he boat onto them with the help of a 2x8 lever. Success. |

| body | August 24, 2017 With the side panels joined to the transom, I now need to build up the chine of the boat with some lumber. A chine of a boat is the a change in angle on the hull of the vessel. This boat has a single chine that transitions the bottom to the sides. The chine logs will be ripped from 2x6 stock with appropriate bevels to match the side angles, but must be thinned down enough to facilitate bending to the curve or the sides. I managed to cut the bevels during the rip of the 16' board and attempted to use a cheap power planer with no success. This planet took off very little wood if any and guaranteed a long process. Enter the bench plane. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g9a8C5IHKdQ/WaBnReaYgpI/AAAAAAAAAB8/pPfEQYukaw4DSdfrc4v5pVWGrJnW34wfQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0730.JPG I bought a 9" bench plane from the hardware store, the two handed kind used in traditional woodworking. This thing peeled off fat, uniform ribbons of wood along the entire length of the board. I had forgotten just how effective these planes were and made quick work of the first board. I have a feeling I'll be using this tool a lot in the future. Lots of work ahead, but it looks to be a wet weekend with hurricane Harvey coming in. Hopefully a little sun will come out on Saturday and we can get those chines installed and start on the bottom planking. |

"body": "August 24, 2017\n\nWith the side panels joined to the transom, I now need to build up the chine of the boat with some lumber. A chine of a boat is the a change in angle on the hull of the vessel. This boat has a single chine that transitions the bottom to the sides. The chine logs will be ripped from 2x6 stock with appropriate bevels to match the side angles, but must be thinned down enough to facilitate bending to the curve or the sides.\n\nI managed to cut the bevels during the rip of the 16' board and attempted to use a cheap power planer with no success. This planet took off very little wood if any and guaranteed a long process. Enter the bench plane. \n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g9a8C5IHKdQ/WaBnReaYgpI/AAAAAAAAAB8/pPfEQYukaw4DSdfrc4v5pVWGrJnW34wfQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0730.JPG\nI bought a 9\" bench plane from the hardware store, the two handed kind used in traditional woodworking. This thing peeled off fat, uniform ribbons of wood along the entire length of the board. I had forgotten just how effective these planes were and made quick work of the first board. I have a feeling I'll be using this tool a lot in the future. Lots of work ahead, but it looks to be a wet weekend with hurricane Harvey coming in. | body | Well, I bought all of this expensive lumber, so I might as well get the project started. I spent last Sunday lofting the lines from the plans onto my plywood and cutting out my initial panels. The process for a "plywood-on-frame" construction is simple. The form of the boat will be determined by the angles of the stern and stem posts and that of the plywood panels. The sheer line of the boat is a straight, factory edge (sheer is the top edge/side rail). The bottom of the panel has a curve that will aid in forcing the bow of the boat upwards has the panels are spread apart, thereby providing an approximate 4.5" of rocker to the front. This will be more easily explained via photos. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_npylC4fO7s/WZnDsVMzAZI/AAAAAAAAAAo/LhX7OjTSGAEp7tGGijDCIQ6Nbe-Pj_nTgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0685.JPG This is Boudain. Addy, is Shift Foreman and will bite you in the ass if you don't do what she says. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KYn2QtrmrpA/WZnGM-TEJSI/AAAAAAAAAA0/v5v3nLb2BLAmB8vcJDf8t-u7XGsPbMS1QCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_0684.JPG Side and transom panels cut and ready for assembly https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rGbr8QaqXHs/WZnGUiiYMEI/AAAAAAAAAA8/wokfQUCADtQJCkb9xTRZuhKLVFT5sDQbgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_0690.JPG Side Panels being joined with glue and screw using butt joints. I had a length of train track from a trade made last year and a truck rim that were heavy enough to provide good clamping pressure. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3o-uWBTg3Bk/WZnGUsLbZnI/AAAAAAAAABA/Nl71StYQk48nOzYL9qb0GdfsLLnBbQA3QCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_0710.JPG This is the most exhilarating part of the build. The odd pieces of lumber magically transform into something that loosely resembles a boat! This is accomplished by liberal use of foul language, tools, and a Spanish Windlass (sorry Barcelona, we didn't coin this term) as a come-along for drawing the side panels around a temporary form. Scary creaks, and pops can be heard as the wood fibers are strained. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rOmwBzeNDvM/WZnGTxwgGqI/AAAAAAAAAA4/a1m0NVy-h6AT0HdnVb4FSu-kkVqX2uclACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_0695.JPG Assembly of the transom panel. The transom is comprised of two 3/4" thick panels glued and screwed to the stern posts and bottom beam. The stern posts were made from 4x4 fir posts that, after much head scratching (measure once, cut twice remember?) were beveled to allow for a proper angle to mate with the side panels. This assembly is heavy and should accommodate the 30ish HP motor to be installed. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5__MUMeXxxY/WZnGVcDvqII/AAAAAAAAABE/-Kid-ZgLI04VB0i1tUHHKcWoMEw5nfL6ACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_0712.JPG https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QVZnj2KaD2c/WZnGV5w1X5I/AAAAAAAAABI/-BFZ64J7pqglWjk7-84ykvFBBL68t0zkwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_0716.JPG That’s a pretty good start! | body | I’m mirroring my blog from blogspot as I transition to steemit as my new digital home. Welcome to the home of Sandbar Boats. I’m CaptainPablo, and this is a blog I'm building mostly to catalogue my personal obsession with all things watercraft or food-oriented. I have a life-long love of boats, surfing, fishing, camping, primitive earth wisdom, hunting, building stuff, breaking stuff, and learning stuff. The advent of the internet has only served to strengthen my addiction to knowledge of these subjects and has inspired a number of projects. In the coming months I'll be posting the progress of my latest project....a Lumber Yard Skiff. Sunday, August 20, 2017 The Lumberyard Skiff It's that time of the year again, time to build another boat. I started a little bit late this time, usually kicking it off in the spring, but it took a while to commit to a boat design this time. I wanted to build a boat that was a little more capable, one that could take me to places further away, one that I could bring family and friends with me. I combed the interwebs in search of the perfect craft. I wanted a power boat, but I wanted an approachable build, rather than some two year long endeavor. The Old Warf Dory Company at http://www.oldwharf.com/ had a design that would fit the bill perfectly. The Lumber Yard Skiff, herein to be referred to has LYS, was a model designed by boatbuilder Walter Baron as a modern take on the famous Brockway Skiffs of the northeast. The design is a no-frills work skiff for hauling loads with stability and ample room for moving about on the boat. The design utilizes commonly available materials (hence the name) and methods that are suitable for amateurs. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qC5S7th4NpM/WZm_IrPzHgI/AAAAAAAAAAM/h9gM8pkMq1oLSQij6U_PbD0oFGGPCUVCACLcBGAs/s1600/skiff.PNG Image from the plan set. This is my intended result. Such an elegant craft, shoalwater-capable with wood accents and a simple console. Day 1 - Project Start August 19, 2017 To date I have worked on this for one day and two evenings, of which an entire day was devoted to sourcing materials. I suppose you could say I had started a month ago, with the purchase of plans and adhesive (more on the glue later), but this is the point where I move from dreaming to commitment. I stumbled upon a lovely little Lumber store in the Houston Heights called Clarks Hardwoods where I had my choice of an incredible variety of plywoods, among them a marine grade fir. A costly purchase no doubt, but I figure it will pay off in the future with less rot issues. I'm still chewing on whether or not to fiberglass this boat all or in part. There's something attractive about building a boat with no plastics( save the sikaflex adhesives), but glass is such an easy way to add durability that it's hard to resist. My experience in boat building has been mostly stitch and glue construction, experimental small boats, and surfboards. This plywood on frame method ought to be a good way of training me towards better precision, having less room for error that S&G builds offer. Day two and three have concluded with all side and transom panels being cut ( minus some transom beveling). The vampires common to the lake Conroe area are out hunting my dogs and I, so time for some dinner. Cheers! |
