| body | In the book of Screenwriting, there is a Theory called “Ninja Turtles”. There, it says “The greatest team in all visual narrative is Ninja Turtles. If you achieve to create a band chemistry like this cartoon, you’ll probably succeed.” Let’s expand this topic a little bit. We have 4 members in this band, and supplementary characters of course, but we’ll talk about it later. Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Every one of them his unique character, but how they share the tasks and characters are important. Leonardo is the oldest of them all, more spiritual and grown-up. Splinter’s best student, well-disciplined. These make him the leader who sets the goals, the visionary of the team. Donatello is the smart one. He studies scientific stuff, he comes after Leonardo. Inventor and more into technical details. He is the analytic turtle. Raphael as you know from his red mask, he is the aggressive one. The Berserker. Gets mad and gets into action. The operator. And Michelangelo, the funny one, joker, he keeps up the spirits and holds the team together. Integrative one. Finally, as a supplementary character, Splinter, the mentor, the teacher, the thinker. We can add the other characters such as April O’Neill, the intelligent officer. But basically, the group stands in 4+1 formation. After having heard of this theory, I started to watch some of my series from a different perspective. Although the team changed over the years, we can examine Mad Men generally with that perspective; Don Draper, the creative guy, selling dreams is his job. At the center of the story, we always watch his visions about the business and life. Similar role with Leonardo, the visionary. Roger Sterling always straight, clear and to the point. He judges clients with how much money they have. Analytical. Lane was analytical too, but opposite of Sterling, he was not very brave, so he committed suicide. Pete Campbell, remember in the first season when he nearly went mad? He looked like that he is gonna be a failure. Anyhow, after a while, as he got experienced, he started to control his temper and succeed. Aggressive isn't’ he? Joan Harris always been the integrator. Always kind to people, she is the emotional supporter. And finally Bert Cooper, the owner, the mentor, the wise guy who walks into the office without shoes. Does not show up much, but we know he holds all the strings. If that made sense to you, you can try this on other Series. Sex and the City or Halt and Catch Fire maybe. And can we apply the theory to 4 elements? Let’s try. First, the easy one: aggressiveness goes to fire. And visions to? The air of course. Being clear should be related to water. And the last one, integrator, relationships and roots, of course is related to earth. So you may ask what about Game of Thrones or Lost? In these series, there are a lot of characters in the middle. There is another method for these called: Enneagram. I am not learned about that but you can check it on the internet every time. |

Although the team changed over the years, we can examine Mad Men generally with that perspective;\n\n\n\nDon Draper, the creative guy, selling dreams is his job. At the center of the story, we always watch his visions about the business and life. Similar role with Leonardo, the visionary.\n\nRoger Sterling always straight, clear and to the point. He judges clients with how much money they have. Analytical.\n \nLane was analytical too, but opposite of Sterling, he was not very brave, so he committed suicide.\n\nPete Campbell, remember in the first season when he nearly went mad? He looked like that he is gonna be a failure. \n\nAnyhow, after a while, as he got experienced, he started to control his temper and succeed. Aggressive isn't’ he?\n\nJoan Harris always been the integrator. Always kind to people, she is the emotional supporter. \n\nAnd finally Bert Cooper, the owner, the mentor, the wise guy who walks into the office without shoes. Does not show up much, but we know he holds all the strings.\n\nIf that made sense to you, you can try this on other Series. Sex and the City or Halt and Catch Fire maybe.\n\nAnd can we apply the theory to 4 elements? Let’s try.\n\nFirst, the easy one: aggressiveness goes to fire. And visions to? The air of course.\n\n\n\nBeing clear should be related to water. And the last one, integrator, relationships and roots, of course is related to earth.\n\nSo you may ask what about Game of Thrones or Lost?\n\nIn these series, there are a lot of characters in the middle. There is another method for these called: Enneagram. I am not learned about that but you can check it on the internet every time.",

| body | Journey to the West is a 2013 made Chinese movie by Stephen Chow, Chi-kin Kwok. Which is in original, one of 4 grand novels of Chinese literature. It is grand and majestic in aesthetics, significant in some actors performances, funny and absurd all the time, it is a love story at the same time, it has a journey and lots of action in it, by the way, don’t forget the philosophy. But, mainly it is Chen’s story about finding himself. A childish guy to grow up, a stupidly bald guy who tries to hunt demons with nursery rhymes. https://mindreels.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/journey-to-the-west-conquering-the-demons-1.jpg We’ll see 5 stages of depression in Chen. Denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. We’ll also witness these stages also in the movie, at the other characters, the environment in everything. Apart from all that good stuff, Journey to the West contains great oscillation. Even the start has a great art of editing, a sideslip. Starts with curiosity, fear, confrontation, happiness, suspicion, threat, danger and finally horror and sadness. In just two minutes. Just at the start of the movie. The story grabbed us, we are in it now. This is true craftsmanship. This oscillation will continue throughout the film, at every other level. ////// ///// ///// ////// //// Absurdity, sadness, pity, action, danger, horror, heroism, grandeur, terror, comedy and then Duan comes. The first blink of love, we see her in the eyes of Chen. From the first meeting, we can see that they are supplementary to each other. Chen is caring, bland and good-natured. On the other side, practical, forward and direct Duan. http://www.cinema.com.my/images/news/2013/7e_getjourneymovietickets00.jpg In the first part, we witness sincerity, honesty, and humiliation for Chen’s part. He could not save the people’s lives. It is a test of bravery and also being a fixer which he fails. Denial is happening while Chen cries, also questioning his beliefs. The second part is about appearance. It may be deceptive. Actually, it is for the film. The employees are all plastic looking. For the people who are looking for pleasures, appearance is a trap. However, for righteous people like Chen, it is easy to avoid. He can see what is beyond. Part 3 is about the family, he meets with Duan’s gang, it is also about misunderstandings and gets overcame them. You know, according to some psychologist, everything is related to connectedness. This is the opportunity for Chen to break his walls and get connected. To do that he has to overcome with his pride. But his pride breaks and he could not do it. The fight occurs: Anger. 2nd stage. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zh8WyeURbds/VR5BFEc82hI/AAAAAAAAOhw/v-Nge6NnLtI/s1600/Journey%2BTo%2BThe%2BWest-Conquering%2BThe%2BDemons%2B%5B2013%5D%2BBlu-Ray%2B720p%2Bx264%2BDual%2Baudio%2B%5BChinese%2B5.1%2BHindi%2B2.0%5D...Hon3y%2B%2B%40%2BPerfectHDMovies.jpg As a movie in oscillation, it also breaks the fourth wall in a way. Not talking to the audience but making a critic about the censorship teasing with the bloody scenes. If you think more blood is savagery, you are wrong. Exaggerated means it is fake. Part 4 is about the final oscillation in the character. Monkey King is an opportunist, he does everything in order to reach his goals. Great acting, oscillating in characters, first, pure and found the goodness in himself. Turns manly and threatening, then mad, then the flirty dancer. This is the bargaining state for Chen. Finally, he makes the fault that causes Duan’s death. In the final part, Chen falls into the depression, only Buddha can help him. Asking help from Monkey King was wrong. Finally accepts the truth and transforms. Chen finally a mature guy, after this journey, ready to walk for his ultimate journey. This was it, we witnessed, psychology, artistic oscillation, and test in different levels in this movie. A great movie; don’t mind the IMDB points. https://i1.imgiz.com/rshots/7237/journey-to-the-west-conquering-the-demons-2013-fragman_7237392-5910_640x360.jpg |

| body | There always been idols, heroes that we are in awe of… We always believed the road that they are walking. We want to walk beside them because we feel like them. If we were them, we would just do what they do, because we feel like them. Their war is justified. We want to solve problems like them, give the rightful message to the audience. Yeah, there always been heroes. Our fathers, society’s leaders, sometimes our friends the dogs... But, How about avatars? Apart from heroes, Avatars does not need to be rightful. We can call them alter ego, too. They just need to be like the audience. They exist for their cause, extend it, and winning. In our age, our faith in heroes turns into the love of avatars. I think you have witnessed how specialized people from different disciplines transformed. A carpenter may tell you the length of wood by just looking at it. A psychologist can tell a man’s feeling by the word the man chose. All of us turn into what we do. After a while, we perceive the world from inside the profession we have. While a business person evaluates an election company by the investments, an advertiser can see it as an operation of perception. A Marketing expert can talk about the audiences consuming tendencies and a developer can criticise about the vote count software. http://ksassets.timeincuk.net/wp/uploads/sites/55/2017/03/GorillazDemonDays-920x584.jpg Well then, since the 1990s, what are these business people, marketing experts, advertisers, and developers doing? Choosing avatars for themselves. In chat rooms, in video games, in reality shows. The choice of Avatars instead of Heroes triggers even our elections. We don’t look for a leader who is fair. We look for the person who will work for the profit of the nation. As the leader of Turkey Erdoğan always states: “We are manservant of the public.” Public expectations of him are to make more money for the country, to make more jobs available and higher living standards. They don’t care him to be kind or consonant with the other countries. All countries people want that kind of leader for a while. This is what Germans expect from Merkel and Americans from Trump... In addition to that, being an Avatar of the nation is not only related to what you do, it is also related to how you do. Take Obama for example; remember when he drops the mic on Fallon’s show? He was cool, groovy, sexy and charismatic which in a way, only in the USA, a president can do this kind of show. Another example is Merkel when she became Person of the Year in 2015 by Time magazine. Nancy Gibbs depicted her with these words: “Her political style was not to have one; no flair, no flourishes, no charisma, just a survivor’s sharp sense of power and a scientist’s devotion to data.” That is so German, isn’t it? Every country conjures their Avatar. After all these leaders from their countries selected, they meet at United Nations and start to quarrel. And we watch them like we watch Big Brother. Wondering who will win in the end. "Convention" is not today's word no more. We can just hope the world becomes better. But somehow, maybe this structure will help the people of the world. |

| body | Have you ever thought what makes a movie popular? I mean, in which component should we start with? Is it the environment, the character, the story? We can say a lot about everything, most probably lots of people said already about it. And I, too, have something to say. I am not talking about the quality of the movies. In the past, we all witnessed some great movies fail at the box office. And some lame movies became very popular. I am talking about the success ratio in their target market. If you are making a movie based on a target market. You have to attract the people in the cluster. Psychology uses interpersonal attraction theory to explain one's attraction to another. We’ll use it for the movies. The theory consists of: Appearance Proximity Similarity Responsiveness Reciprocal Liking (Rewards) https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/gallery_landscape_1296x730/2013/06/Pulp_Fiction.jpg 1. Appearance Yeah, we tend to like people with good appearance. This is an evolutionary thing. But, what is the appearance in a movie? The movie itself first describes itself with appearance. Nearly everything in it is related to it. Special effects, art direction, editing, actors, and actresses. In this step, the director should calculate the market. If you are making a movie for a man in their early 20s, you should put more money for special effects. And muscle well-built and vulgar cast maybe? But, If you are making it for women the guys can be more gentle. You can forget the special effects budget and sort that for some lovely scene-making. 2. Proximity We tend to like people who are all around us. The people we see every day or have a chance to see generally around. For movies; It is advertising. Most of this advertising is brand recognition, of the director, the cast, the story. It’s familiarness with the audience. This is why popular movies are mostly cliches. It should be easy to transmit the message to an audience. https://www.thewrap.com/wp-content/uploads/files/2013/Jun/30/100641/main_image/imsoexcitedbiginside.jpg 3. Similarity We like mirror images. Reminds us that we matter, we are really like others. And we are not alone. Seeing a character, even if it is a computer-generated monster which thinks like we do, will grab our attention. People doing similar things like us will unpreventably cause friendliness. If you are making a movie for white-collars, it will probably be good to put a Starbucks in it. A unicorn for little girls, a role model for boys. 4. Responsiveness, Reciprocal Liking Yeah, you can wait for responses from a person. But you can not interact with a movie. Its flow is one-sided. Roots of responsiveness of a movie lie in its preparations. What does a man or woman want? What is the meaning of life? What kind of clothes are in fashion? If you have questions, and the producers know that, they response you with the movie. And you’ll get rewarded. This shows us the difference between an independent movie and a box office movie. The advantage of box office lies in its responsiveness. While independent makes suits and puts it in a shop window, box office movies are like tailors. They take measurements and try to sew the best dress for the audience, with the most suitable fabric. http://www.johnlikesmovies.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/before-midnight-summer-indie-movies.jpg This is why they make more money. Not because they are making so-called lame movies that everybody can understand. This is the reward for taking the job seriously. The pattern in psychology, explaining people’s likeness can be used in other disciplines. Like that. That can be a new departure point for us. Let’s note that. And while writing this essay I’ve discovered things. The interdisciplinary use of these patterns can lead to discoveries. Let’s note that, too. |

| body | In ancient times people got fed with agriculture. While they were feasting after the harvest, they worshipped Dionysus. The sailors needed a help in seas, so they choose Poseidon. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/73/Dionysos_thiasos_Louvre_MNE938.jpg/1200px-Dionysos_thiasos_Louvre_MNE938.jpg Then a new technology called "book", which was a quite good way to carry information emerged, the people started to believe in it. However, there were too few books and the people who can read it had the money. Then printed press invented. So, the books spredt. People started to say things like 'I think therefore I am.' This was the time, people started to worship information and science. In the last two decades, computers began to invade all of our areas of life. That was too intense that, even some of the people began to think that the universe is some tough software. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02784/matrix-system-fail_2784216b.jpg In today, from an individual level to nations. There is only one thing left to believe: economic growth. This is now, our age. Our god is growth: gain more money, develop good income methods, institutions. To sum up, what you believe is often related to what you do, what products or services that you use. If you satisfied with foods from harvest you believe Dionysos. And you earn your living via computers, It is easy for you to think the world is a software. |

| body | When I was a kid, one day at school, me and my friends found a play box in conference room.. Somehow we really liked the box, without even looking inside of it, we started to play with it. We threw it to each other like a ball. Shook and swang. Hit each other with it. After our game ends, we left the room with happiness. An hour later our teacher came and asked “who broke the photographer's camera?” no one replied, nobody show up. At that night, I figured it out that the box was we were playing was the camera bag. I did not say a word after that day. I was afraid. Nobody talked about it later. This memory made me think about it years and years after. Ok, we have science. We have thinking capacity. We have technical stuff, philosophy, religion, experiences… whatever. What if we are, all humanity is mistaken? We think it is a world, space, stars, mountains, rivers, faculties, institutions and civilization. What if it is just a camera bag? https://assets.weforum.org/article/image/large_DW_ayfTvTJKPVyhQBAvy-hlrz7g3dwuk415y0GA-2OY.jpg As humanity, we built schools, faculties, research centers, foundations, institutions, made archives, send spaceships to space… We were and we are always in a search. But, maybe we are all looking in the wrong direction to find an answer. Yeah, most of the inventions and discoveries work for us practically, however, maybe we are missing something more precious and vital. You know Plato’s allegory of the cave. The people in the cave live their lives with the shadows of things: foxes, trees, horses etc. If a person goes out of the cave and see the originals of the objects, and go back inside with the new knowledge, and try to tell the cave-dwellers, they would probably try to kill him. Maybe we should look at the people who we are prisoning, isolating and killing. I don’t say everyone of them are heroes or completely right. But some of their words can be inspiring. While we are partying with the community, there are some outsiders trying to tell us, in a hard way, that we are making some crucial mistakes. Maybe the names like Alan Turing, Mandela, Che, Lennon, Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King would tell you something… http://www.gravity7.com/blog/uploaded_images/Gilles_Deleuze_2_H-737107.jpg Deleuze says that schizophrenics are a threat to capitalist society because of being outside of the oedipal complex. I think even the mental illnesses can teach us good things. According to Foucault, traditional power builds a society and isolates the misfit population. For me, this is a paraphrase for “society isolates the unproductive, unbeneficial.” Examples may vary… Let’s look at Handmaiden, a genius movie for me, it is about that our realities may not intersect, even we try to be fully aware. Even if it is a life and death situation. https://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/review/primary_image/reviews/the-handmaiden-2016a/hero_Handmaiden-2016-1.jpg SPOILER ALERT!!! Lady Hideko lives in a context that prevents her to escape and accept the life as it is presented by Uncle Kouzuki. She needed an outsider, an information box that can change the context. And Sook-hee… She made a plan with Count Fujiwara, till nearly the end of the movie, she did not know a thing. She was nearly ending in an asylum. With her context, she could not succeed. Her vision was not enough, she was like a pawn in the game between three others. Count and Uncle were the people who deceived. They were clearly misinformed and believed the information. They were the ones with the strong hands. Even in the end, Uncle’s men were searching for two women. However, one of them was disguised as a man. Yeah, Individuals make mistakes, we know that. Societies can make mistakes, we know that too. This knowledge leads me to the idea that whole humanity can be mistaken. I will never be sure that we are doing the right thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whldChqCsYk |

"body": "When I was a kid, one day at school, me and my friends found a play box in conference room.. Somehow we really liked the box, without even looking inside of it, we started to play with it. We threw it to each other like a ball. Shook and swang. Hit each other with it. After our game ends, we left the room with happiness.\n\nAn hour later our teacher came and asked “who broke the photographer's camera?” no one replied, nobody show up. At that night, I figured it out that the box was we were playing was the camera bag. I did not say a word after that day. I was afraid. Nobody talked about it later.\n\nThis memory made me think about it years and years after.\n\nOk, we have science. We have thinking capacity. We have technical stuff, philosophy, religion, experiences… whatever. What if we are, all humanity is mistaken? We think it is a world, space, stars, mountains, rivers, faculties, institutions and civilization. What if it is just a camera bag?\n\nhttps://assets.weforum.org/article/image/large_DW_ayfTvTJKPVyhQBAvy-hlrz7g3dwuk415y0GA-2OY.jpg\n\nAs humanity, we built schools, faculties, research centers, foundations, institutions, made archives, send spaceships to space… We were and we are always in a search. | body | In ancient times people got fed with agriculture. And you earn your living via computers, It is easy for you to think the world is a software. |

| body | Yes, Katy Perry once a Christian rock musician. Then made up her mind, probably she discovered something in life, in the music industry and most probably in herself. And then, she made it to the top. And now, in her music clip, she says and shows numerous things that make us question her faith in industry and everything. Chained to the rhythm, re-depicts the American Dream, as an Amusement park in the first place. However, we see this park through the eyes of Katy Perry, which starts to lose her interest. Then, near the end, we see Katy Perry’s full realization of the situation. Let’s just start. The clip starts with the entrance of a 60s retro looking amusement park with pastel colors and smooth shapes. This style already puts the viewer in the Jetsons. But, wait, what’s that, while passing the turnstiles Katy Perry started singing and saying: “Are we crazy? Living our lives through a lens.” which makes the question. A few details: Couples entering a house model, starting point of the so-called American Dream. But these houses actually drop, criticizing the mortgage. I think the dream is no more stable. We see other couples, getting on a device that throws them into the unknown. Future is uncertain. Another coupling takes place in love roller coaster. This time, the couple is not actually a couple, maybe they are giving it a try. But Katy is short of likes. Why? Because she is criticizer of the amusement park, she is locked out by the society. Gas station, people drinking fuel kind of thing, while their mouths burning. Shows our fossil oil based civilization exchanges the humanity to zombies. We drink one after another, having fun like that, forgetting where the drink comes from. The scariest part is here, mouths turning into burning flesh. Utopia turning into dystopia. However, only Katy is aware of this. You know, the reality is in the eye of the examiner. We can be one of the other people having fun in the park. We wouldn’t be disturbed. We are seeing the park through the eyes of the outsider. There is a hamster circle people waiting in the line to run. Which is a unique depiction of effort based working life? The faith in work life: better you effort, better you are. But, after a point, this becomes an attitude, you won’t wait for the earning. You are showing an effort to just show effort. Or just to have fun. Some friend of mine once told me, people were working for better lives. But now, we are living for better jobs. I think that is the situation. After a fun time in the park, the modern individual visitors of the park the audience starts to watch some virtual reality stuff. But, did you notice, that the TV here is showing to nuclear war threat or cold war years? And the family taking place is a prototype of this era. I think this is the starting point of American Dream. And right after that, the director shows us the ending critic from a very different perspective. Nuclear war or the communists weren’t the threat, the danger is the system itself. Because puts people away from their own nature, puts in a bubble defenseless to an unknown threat. And Skip Marley takes place, saying: “They woke up the lions. Time is ticking for the empire” Actually, time is ticking for Katy. In the end, questioning becomes unbearable that Katy looks anxious, stops running, mesmerized by Skip Marley, gets out of the human chain as all of the others won’t stop dancing chained. Remember 20th century, as the nation states built, people were in limitless joy to be united, dancing and moving, practicing in a synchronized way. But now we see from the eyes of Katy Perry, this is unsustainable. Katy Perry is like the Ant Zet. Can’t dance to the rhythm. And the last look is beautiful, full of different emotions, anxiety, fear, uncertainty and full of questions. This is the point of no return for Katy. This is the point where you get away from the paradigm, system, civilization or anything else. This is the desert of reality, middle of nowhere. And of course, relief of getting rid of the things of human-made environment. Most beautifully, the starting point of self-realization. I think Katy Perry is in a new level of her life. This is why in the start, I emphasized on “Once a Christian rock musician”. She made it to the top, and now all the meaning vanished. Once again she needs to find her true self, to move on. I am very curious to see what will she does next. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um7pMggPnug |
