| body | <center></center> I spent some time improving the new UI and I'll explain what I learned below. Let's start with the earliest screenshot I ever took of Frosted Factory:  Yuck! This was the earliest design for the game. Even I knew it was bad (and I have no design experience). It had no theme- it was just a card game. I also tried to incorporate the menu into the top area to "simplify things"- or so I told myself. It was functional though- the core game loop remains largely unchanged. Fast forward a few months- I had a menu and a first draft! It was much easier to create the final product from this stage. <center></center> After the above image was taken, I got some help from my friend Peter (https://citrus7.deviantart.com/gallery/), he gave me some great suggestions and advice. I had settled on the ice cream factory theme. There's something to work with now! I had all the UI I needed (a level up system, level picker, different game modes, a ice cream cart to upgrade, etc). However things were still unpolished and cobbled together. I've compiled a list of things that I still needed to change below. Finally I ended up with this : <center></center> Things I learned: * I was not highlighting the unlockables. I thought to myself- "the player will unlock stuff as they go, what do they care if they can see what they have left to unlock". Of course this is flawed- players want to know if there's still stuff to unlock, what may be left to unlock, and want to sense progress towards completion. So I added locks to the stuff that was yet to be unlocked- simple. I also added outlines to shadowy future unlockable skins to show the player what they have yet to unlock. Before this, I didn't show what you were going to be able to unlock next, so the player never knew how much they had left or if they were finished. <center></center> * Again, I didn't realize players would want to see that you can make progress. I had added a level up mechanism, but they need to know that the game has many levels. Things needed to be MORE explicit. To fix this, I simply added a title of "Levels 1-20" in the menu, instead of just "Levels". This simple change lets the players know there's more content than what is visible on the screen at the moment. It's one of the smallest changes with the biggest impact. It was also not evident what the various parts of the screen meant (enterprise vs shop). As players progress, I added some tips to make sure players were well aware of what all the parts of the screen mean. <center></center> * The menu is disorderly, there are random parts that don't really seem to go well together or don't align with each-other. This makes it look chaotic- which is not good when you're trying to entice a new player. To fix this, I cut the screen into clear sections, most have their own background image. This was the most labor-intensive change: resizing and cleaning up various parts of the UI. I also tried to group similar items close to each-other. Before I had buttons in this sort of order: game mode 1, game mode 2, skins picker, game mode 3, etc. Obviously it should be game mode 1,2,3, then skins picker separately. I also added a black outline to the buttons so that they fit better with the rest of the UI. The main game loop (the gameplay) didn't change much. But I did enhance it by adding more information about progress and how to play. I also made the tutorial much easier to get through- so it won't be painful for new players. <center></center> I am a software developer so I had to learn art from scratch. Even all about the unlockables- this draws in a player. * Tell the player EVERYTHING (even more than the above). Almost nothing should be assumed to be self-evident. * Make sure menus are orderly. Similar buttons or areas should be grouped to make it easier on the user's eye and mind. Last Time's Goals: * Implement some of the design suggestions I got over Christmas. [Success!] * Really brainstorm for keywords [Fail] * Post at least once on twitter, facebook, and imgur. [Fail] * 10 new followers (on any social media) [4/10 Meh] Next Time's Goals: * Generate all the missing levels * Make a promotional image or video/gif that explains the game well. I can use this to get new followers. |

I've compiled a list of things that I still needed to change below.\n\nFinally I ended up with this :\n\n<center></center>\n\n\nThings I learned:\n\n\n* I was not highlighting the unlockables. I thought to myself- \"the player will unlock stuff as they go, what do they care if they can see what they have left to unlock\". Of course this is flawed- players want to know if there's still stuff to unlock, what may be left to unlock, and want to sense progress towards completion.\n\nSo I added locks to the stuff that was yet to be unlocked- simple.\n\nI also added outlines to shadowy future unlockable skins to show the player what they have yet to unlock. Before this, I didn't show what you were going to be able to unlock next, so the player never knew how much they had left or if they were finished.\n\n<center></center>\n\n\n* Again, I didn't realize players would want to see that you can make progress. I had added a level up mechanism, but they need to know that the game has many levels. Things needed to be MORE explicit.\n\nTo fix this, I simply added a title of \"Levels 1-20\" in the menu, instead of just \"Levels\". This simple change lets the players know there's more content than what is visible on the screen at the moment. It's one of the smallest changes with the biggest impact.\n\nIt was also not evident what the various parts of the screen meant (enterprise vs shop). As players progress, I added some tips to make sure players were well aware of what all the parts of the screen mean.\n\n\n<center></center>\n\n\n\n* The menu is disorderly, there are random parts that don't really seem to go well together or don't align with each-other. This makes it look chaotic- which is not good when you're trying to entice a new player.\n\nTo fix this, I cut the screen into clear sections, most have their own background image. This was the most labor-intensive change: resizing and cleaning up various parts of the UI.\n\nI also tried to group similar items close to each-other. Before I had buttons in this sort of order: game mode 1, game mode 2, skins picker, game mode 3, etc. Obviously it should be game mode 1,2,3, then skins picker separately.\n\nI also added a black outline to the buttons so that they fit better with the rest of the UI.\n\n\nThe main game loop (the gameplay) didn't change much. But I did enhance it by adding more information about progress and how to play. I also made the tutorial much easier to get through- so it won't be painful for new players.\n\n<center></center>\n\nI am a software developer so I had to learn art from scratch. For those who are curious of the full process I use to make all the art for my game, my entire process is here: https://steemit.com/gamedev/@camillott/clever-code-completion .\n\ntl;dr\n\nI learned that I need to:\n* Tell the player EVERYTHING. Even all about the unlockables- this draws in a player.\n* Tell the player EVERYTHING (even more than the above). Almost nothing should be assumed to be self-evident.\n* Make sure menus are orderly. Similar buttons or areas should be grouped to make it easier on the user's eye and mind.\n\n\nLast Time's Goals:\n* Implement some of the design suggestions I got over Christmas. [Success!]\n* Really brainstorm for keywords [Fail]\n* Post at least once on twitter, facebook, and imgur. [Fail]\n* 10 new followers (on any social media) [4/10 Meh]\n\nNext Time's Goals:\n* Generate all the missing levels\n* Make a promotional image or video/gif that explains the game well. I can use this to get new followers.",

My friend gave me tons of design ideas that seem obvious now, but I completely missed, such as: Show what is unlockable so that the player knows what to aim for (the game currently only shows a new skin once you've unlocked it) Make the play button more obvious and bigger than the other buttons (like settings) Show the player what the end goal is. I focused so much on the main game loop that I had forgotten to show the player why the hell they are playing the main game loop. Keep consistent on the art style of the game. I need to fix some buttons so that they retain the same style as the rest of the art for the game. * Making promotional trailers sucks, I dislike it a lot. I don't know what I'm doing, and there's very few newbie-friendly trailer making programs that exist on Linux/PC. I'm much better at programming, so I ended up just coding the behavior I wanted to show off into my game (such as making a hand follow my mouse), then I did a screen recording of that. I'm not done yet, but I think I have all the clips I need recorded. * Steemit can be rewarding! I haven't bought any steem, but my last post made a little money! I got some help from a whale or two, but it's amazing to think that I was noticed enough to get a bunch of upvotes! I started this blog to document the trek to releasing my first game. I couldn't find anyone else who documented that journey and I know there's lots to learn that the gamedev veterans would forget to teach the newbies. * The expression "Fake it till you make it" is seemingly true! | body | These last 2 weeks were very productive, I got the music loading much faster by using a cordova plugin. I got a bunch of new sprites added to the game. I have got the ads working and the purchases working. I have a script that automates making a new build of the app, so it's super easy to make a change and push it out again. My todo list is the shortest it has ever been! The last large task I have to do is figure out how to incorporate. <center></center> Things I have learned: The hardest part to fill out in the play store is the "store listing". It is hard to come up with phrases that people search for and will actually find your app with. I've learned that I need to come up with so-called "long-tailed keywords", which are phrases that are searched for less frequently, but when they are searched for- your app could turn up as one of the top 10 results. There's no way my game would return in the top ten for a search of "fun game", but it may come in top 10 for "sweets factory" or "brain twister". I'm currently brainstorming these... There doesn't seem to be any free tools that can help very much with finding valuable long-tailed keywords in the play store. Another thing about keywords- it took me hours of searching, but I finally realized that in the play store "keywords" are just words in your description/title/short description. They don't have a special field or anything, so your description needs to be filled with long-tailed words that accurately describe your game. I'm now confident that I will actually release this game. Much of what remains is organizing the release, the game itself is 99.9% done. This is super exciting for me. I don't think I'll make much money, but it'll be a great thing to put on a resume AND I've learned a hell of a lot about business, marketing, gamedev, art, etc, etc! Accomplishments: Ads, purchases, music playing well, social media posts, more sprites ! Todos: * Setup the android store purchase for the game (it's a freemium game, with 1 purchase to unlock more levels) * Investigate getting a free trailer done. * Get better acquainted with the analytics I'm using * Get twitter and facebook group updated with the game description text and images * Generate a bunch of levels for the game (I am about 30% done this, just requires leaving my computer on for a few days) * Figure out good keywords for the play store. * Investigate Imgur - apparently it's a good way to make waves. Last time's goals: * Make several social media posts, and NOT just advertising frosted factory. [Success!] * Acquire 5 new followers. [Success!] * Get ads and purchases fully hammered out. [Success!] Next week's goals: * Acquire 5 new followers * Start on making a trailer * Get analytics working. * Make some animated GIFs to post about my game. |

| body | It has been a long time since the last blog post, the absence of a tablet to test on has been the major sore point. <center></center> Things I have learned: How to do game art as a software developer! 6 Months ago, I was the cliché game developer who had no art skills and was afraid of having to buy art or pay an artist! Today, I feel relatively confident with my skills- I have made all the art for Frosted Factory myself! Today I'll talk about my full end-to-end process for making game art (at least in the style of art for my game). I do all my art in GIMP because I'm cheap! Today I'm making an egg topping for my ice cream game (yes, egg on ice cream... the game is a bit silly), the directions are below the following image. <center></center> 1) Google for the image I want to draw to make to give me ideas about what are the essential parts to draw (white and yellow egg with wavy white outside). 2) Make a new GIMP image (File->new). Make sure you have the toolbox and the layers windows open. We'll need both of them along with the canvas. 3a) Delete the starting/default layer with the white background. 3b) Add 2 layers. 3c) Select the first layer so that we can draw on it. 3d) Using the Paths tool, draw the outline of the thing we want to draw (the egg white). (When you're done, connect the 2 last dots using control+click on the first dot) 3e) The path we drew in the above doesn't have nice rounded edges. To fix this, click on path->edit under tool options. Now, on each point in our path, drag the Y/Z editable points so that they form a straight line. This ensures that the curves are not choppy. Play around with moving the points around and editing their curves. 4a) Once you're happy with your curve, select "stroke path" on the tool options pane. 4b) You don't need to do anything special with the path options- but you can play with this if you like. 4c) Yay! We stroked a path! 5a) Right above the stroke path button, click "selection from path". Now that we have selected an area, we want to fill it in on a different layer. 5b) Select the second layer you made at the beginning. 5c) Click on the color picker, choose something nearly white (I feel like it's best to save real white for shiny flashes and stuff). 5d) Click the bucket fill tool. 5e) Click on the area you have selected. We have an egg white! 6) Repeat steps 3b to 5e for the yoke, this time bucket fill with a yellow. 6c) Your image should have 4 layers now. 7a) While the yoke's outline is still selected, select the blend/gradient tool. Select a lighter yellow color. Change the gradient to "FG to Transparent". 7b) Click and drag from approximately W to X, this will fill the selected area with a nice gradient and make the image look polished. 8a) Do some shadowing with the air brush tool. While the yoke was still selected, I did a little shadowing on the bottom part of the yoke. Then went to "select"->"None". Then I proceeded with some shadow in the egg white to give it the illusion of texture. If your image is darker, you can use the air brush tool to make parts lighter as well. Done! You may want to do image->canvas size, to get rid of unused space. When you're finished, file->export (default options are fine)->ok Beginning to end, this is how I make my sprites! <center>--------------------</center> Accomplishments: ART, New tablet, ported to Cordova (instead of plain crosswalk by itself) Todos: Setup the android store purchase for the game (it's a freemium game, with 1 purchase to unlock more levels) Investigate getting a free trailer done. Get better acquainted with the analytics I'm using Get twitter and facebook group updated with the game description text and images Enter all the details in the google play store for the dev account and frosted factory- I started this, but it's long. Generate a bunch of levels for the game (I have a script that can do this- I just need to leave my computer for a few days to generate them) Figure out good keywords for the play store. Last time's goals: Make several social media posts, and NOT just advertising frosted factory. [Failed miserably] Acquire 3 new followers. [Success!] Knock off more todos!
