| body | 10:04 AM E.T. Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, begins her speech on dreamers 06:10 PM E.T. The 77-year-old Democrat concludes her speech on DACA, breaking the record for the longest speech in House history. The previous record was held by Representative Champ Clark in 1909: 5 hours, 15 minutes. This was easily broken by Pelosi whose speech ran for a continuous 8 hours. Pelosi broke the 109-year-old House record by three hours — in four-inch heels; no sitting, no breaks. Pelosi wore four-inch high heels for the entirety of her eight-hour, seven-minute speech. (Fox News) The purpose of the speech was to pressure Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, to enable representatives the discussion about immigration reform. She specifically targeted the subject of ‘Dreamers’, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — DACA— recipients, whose fate has been undecided since Trump’s declaration to end the program. Fortunately, a federal judge ordered that the administration must maintain said program until the courts pass final judgment on the decision to end the arrangement, which shielded undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children from deportation. Pelosi requested that Ryan follow in the footsteps of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in committing to an immigration bill vote. The Democrat claimed that she, along with many other members of her caucus, would oppose the budget caps deal if she was not given a substantial promise on the DACA vote. During her speech, Pelosi quoted Bible passages and personal testimonies from DACA recipients. The minority leader took advantage of her position to deliver this filibuster-style speech, seeing as leaders are allowed additional time, referred to as “magic minutes”. It should be noted that this, however, was not credited as a filibuster, which can only be pursued in the Senate. |

| body | # Uber Takes To The Skies The future is here. For decades, visionaries have dreamed of flying cars and feasible air transportation. Now, this dream is becoming a reality. Every day, millions of hours are lost on the road globally. The average San Francisco resident lost 230 hours commuting between work and home in 2016; with a population of nearly 900K residents, that amounts to half a million hours of productivity wasted each day. The more time spent on commute means less time spent with family and friends, less time for self-improvement, and less time for leisure activities. A more substantial sum of money used on fuel can also lead to higher levels of stress which leads to elevated blood pressure levels. Uber Technologies Inc., global transportation technology company, has found a solution to this problem. Vertical take-off and landing aircrafts commonly referred to as ‘VTOLs’ shall be made an affordable form of daily transportation for the lion’s share. It will even eventually be less expensive than the ownership of a car. Most individuals typically regard flying as a costly, and the often infrequent way to travel from one point to another. This might be due to the small number of plane manufacturers and how seldom they are seen (up close at least). *Picture of a vertical take-off and landing aircraft, commonly rffered to as a VTOL* ## Complications Of course, as with any new technology, several challenges have presented themselves as this project has progressed. The most salient complications include trials about certification and economic issues. The issues ahead are considered the most crucial problems that must be solved to ensure the successful introduction of urban air transportation to the masses. The certification process is the first major problem — for VTOLs to operate in the USA, or any country in the world, they must meet the requirements set by the aviation authorities for said country. In the United States, they must meet the regulations of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Air traffic control is also very prominent, as it will undoubtedly occur that the surplus of aircrafts in the air will cause traffic issues and thus rules, or rather more rules (since some are already in place) will have to be drawn up for no chaos to ensue. Vehicle efficiency — no commercially viable aircraft has been made that suits the needs of this project. Despite these barriers, Uber hopes to launch the project by in Los Angeles by 2020. It is incredible how far the world has come. ### For more information... Go to: https://www.uber.com/info/elevate/ There, you will see a promo video for what is coming. \n\nUber Technologies Inc., global transportation technology company, has found a solution to this problem. \n\n\n*Picture of a vertical take-off and landing aircraft, commonly rffered to as a VTOL*\n\n## Complications\nOf course, as with any new technology, several challenges have presented themselves as this project has progressed. \n\nDespite these barriers, Uber hopes to launch the project by in Los Angeles by 2020. It is incredible how far the world has come. \n\n### For more information...\n\nGo to: https://www.uber.com/info/elevate/\nThere, you will see a promo video for what is coming. A much more detailed explanation of this operation (as this is clearly an overview on the subject) can be read in this PDF: \nhttps://www.uber.com/elevate.pdf",

| body | Incredibly, against nature, the human race can not triumph. Any force would be null in attempt to dominate the natural world. The meteorological events that have taken place in the past weeks give credence to these statements. Harvey, one of the most costly hurricanes to ever hit in American history is what first drew the nation's attention to these disasters. The first major hurricane since Wilma (2005), Harvey has racked up $190 billion in costs due to agriculture loss, increases in unemployment, and property and infrastructure damages among other causes. The catastrophic flooding seen in Texas was not due to the severity of the storm itself, but its slow movement through the southeastern portion of the state as well as Louisiana. Harvey stayed stationed in Texas from August 26th to the 30th, leaving over 300,000 people without electricity. As of September 6, Harvey’s death toll rose to 70 deaths spanning throughout 13 counties. After making landfall and dropping 2+ feet of rain, Harvey has displaced thousands along the Gulf Coast and Houston. Seeking to help those affected by the disaster, numerous organizations have undertaken work and set up funds to help pay for the damages. For instance, Houston’s mayor, Sylvester Turner, has established the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Other charities have launched relief funds; examples include GlobalGiving, The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, the Salvation Army, and Samaritan’s Purse among others. To help support the cause, you can go to these organizations’ pages and donate money, food, or even clothing. Flooding in Texas after the events of Hurricane Harvey (ABC News) Unfortunately, Harvey was not the only natural disaster to threaten the United States in the past month. Only one week after the events in Houston, the residents of Florida were informed of yet another hurricane coming their way. Due to its location near the tropics and the Atlantic Ocean, Florida is one of the most likely states to be affected by hurricanes. Florida was not the only area hit; Hurricane Irma struck Cuba with lethal winds on September 9, continuing its ever-increasing path of destruction through the Caribbean in transit to Florida. On the 10th, Irma slammed the Florida Keys as a category four hurricane, packing winds at 130 mph with a storm surge of 10 feet. Moving north, it passed through Naples and Miami, with wind gusts ranging from 99 to 142 mph. Irma then diminished to a tropical storm but not before leaving nine dead in Florida. Of course, Irma’s damage was much more devastating in the Caribbean, where the death toll has risen to 38, despite the fact that some islands remain cut off or in entropy as supplies remain low. Comparison of Hurricane Irma and Matthew (Cetus News) Despite the already cataclysmic episodes that have resided in the U.S, yet another hurricane is on its way to the states. Hurricane Jose was a Category 4 storm when it brushed by the Caribbean islands, not causing much damage. As of September 11, Jose was a Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds at 105 mph meandering throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Its path is still potentially threatening to Florida, although reports state that it is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane and approach the northeast of the country. | body | The highest number of American casualties in United States history occurred in the Civil War; the battle over slavery and state’s rights broke out when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter. The Confederate States Of America, also deemed the Confederacy, was a self-proclaimed nation that existed from the year 1960 to 1965. They were a group of 11 slaveholder states that seceded from the Union due to the then-controversy of slavery and state’s rights. The Confederacy and the Union broke out into what is still the bloodiest war in the United States history, resulting in the deaths of approximately 785,000 to 1,000,000+ residents. After the Civil War, the states in the Confederacy rejoined the Union, and the emancipation of slavery took place, although the actual abolishment of this awful practice would not cease until later years. Currently, there are approximately 1,500 symbols of the Confederacy found throughout the country (as claimed by the Southern Poverty Law Center). The Confederacy’s involvement in slavery and its overall negative impact on United States history has led some to argue that these statues are tokens of America’s dark past and participation in slavery, as well as symbols of racism within the United States. On the other hand, some reason that they exist as markers of history and as a way to honor American heritage. Critics dispute that these monuments are more a question of Southerner’s pride, not a way to celebrate pro-slavery and white supremacy. The nationwide debate as to why we should keep these statues ensued after a white nationalist rally that took place on August 12 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Since then, several government officials have called for the removal of these monuments throughout their states. According to the New York Times, thus far the states of Maryland, Texas, New York City, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Louisiana have or are planning to remove various Confederate monuments. Government officials arranged the majority of these removals/relocations and properly removed these markers from their premises. One exception, however, was in Durham, North Carolina. There, Protesters used a rope to bring down the statue of a Confederate soldier in response to the events in Charlottesville. Presently, the removal of these Confederate monuments is a controversial topic that has and will continue to arise discussion. Some believe that it is foolish because it is a part of our history, and the taking down of these monuments will not change it. Others feud that it will lessen the fuel for the fire on white supremacy, racism, and neo-nazism. Nevertheless, as of now, they will continue to be removed and relocated from their places throughout the nation. |

"body": "The highest number of American casualties in United States history occurred in the Civil War; the battle over slavery and state’s rights broke out when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter. \n\nCurrently, there are approximately 1,500 symbols of the Confederacy found throughout the country (as claimed by the Southern Poverty Law Center). \n\n\n\nAccording to the New York Times, thus far the states of Maryland, Texas, New York City, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Louisiana have or are planning to remove various Confederate monuments.
