| body | So there is always a lot of talk about the difference between these two systems of government, and often times some more polarizing conversation as to whether the United States is one or the other. Here's what they both entail: Democracy : The United States is the worlds "Democratic" beacon. It means "The people's system." The power lays with the people, who can vote and essentially have control over the democratic process. Because the sovereignty lies with the people, minorities can be crushed from above by majorities, leaving a platform for mobocracy (it is like it sounds). Republic : This form of government is in fact what the United States actually practices. It is one where the people elect representatives who then establish a central leader (president) to represent everyones best interests (pretty streamlined and can bring these leaders dangerously far from the issues the people are faced with). All of these factors come together to create "law," which is the basis of power. Despite everything you've learned about our "democracy," a little bit of due diligence makes it clear we are actually a republic (which is a good thing, so we can protect the minorities). When you understand this, it's clear to see how it would've been possible for such polarizing political parties to form. But, that is a conversation for another day... Everyone have a great day :) |

| body | Hi, hope everyone is doing well. I just spent the day learning a little beyond the total basics of trading options, which i've been trading of a mixture of fundamental/technical analysis for the past few months to fair success. I learned how to manage and trade a vertical spread, and I will commit this to memory and hopefully elucidate the process for some others with this post. Essentially, a vertical spread entails selling an OTM call or put and buying one that is farther OTM than the one you sold. Basically, you collect a premium for the option you sell, and protect yourself by buying another in the case that the stock price goes ITM (OTM/ITM are in the money and out the money, which basically mean the option has value because the owner has the ability to buy/sell a stock for less/more than it's worth). There are 3 scenarios that come from this, and i'll explain with easy numbers. I'll say you sold a $100 call for $3 and bought a $105 dollar call for $1. The current stock price is $95, and IPV is worthwhile (implied volatility, which makes options worth more because theres a chance the stock price can move to a strike price). 1. Both options expire OTM. You lose $100 from the option you bought, and make $300 from the one you sold. $200's up. 2. The stock goes wild and both options are ITM. The maximum loss you can take is based on the spread between how much you bought and sold the calls for, and the values of the options. Say the price hits 110. You make $200 from the spread, you lose $1000 from the option you sold, and make $500 from the one you bought. Total down is $300. 3. The price of the stock is in between the strikes. Say it is $103. You make $200 from the spread, and lose $300 off the option you sold. Loss is $100. (you can play with these numbers and make a gain from an in between strike, try it!) So, as you can see, vertical spreads are simple enough for even a UT student to understand (i'm serious, we are really just a bunch of sheep). Of course, it's worth the time to learn a little bit more about. If you can though, you stand to go to battle with the options market with a pretty sturdy shield. So thanks for reading, let me know if you have any questions and i'd love to chat. Austin, Texas has been pretty lonely with summer around. :( 1. Both options |

| body | Hey guys, Cameron here. I've been really busy the past couple days, and haven't had a chance to write. Today, I'm a little pressed for time, so I'm going to post a crypto chart (everyones favorite) and try to explain what indicators I use so anyone can easily visualize it. So i'll keep this terse, but feel free to ask any questions or point out any concerns (in fact, those would all be greatly appreciated, we are in this together, right?) Well first, I want you to notice what is called Elliot Wave Theory, or at least a pretty solid representation of it. I talked about it in my previous post, but essentially, it says that prices move in large impulses, or waves. The numbers 1-5 represent how this works. Here's a quick spewing of facts about that: -There are always 5 waves on the way up. -Three on the way down (they are complicated to draw, so I didn't have much time to explain them in this post, but am happy to answer questions.) Rules: Wave 2 cannot retrace 100% of wave one. Check Wave 3 cannot be the shortest. Check Wave 4 cannot overlap wave 2. Check Wave 2 tends to retrace 50-70% of wave 1. Check Wave 4 tends to retrace 30-50% of wave 3. Check Waves 1 and 5 are around the same length. Ehh, check. So as you see, assuming a decent amount of volume, you perhaps may have been able to see this set up before it actually happened, and trade off of it. Whether it be getting lucky and buying at the beginning, or patiently waiting to buy the dips, there were plenty of chances to make money. Now notice another strategy I commonly use. Look at the 9 and 90 day moving averages. As you can see, any sort of convergence/divergence between the two usually preface a large decline/gain. As I'm sure you see, they both offer some strong support and resistance. Look at the very end of the chart (the present). Perhaps with a crossover of the 90 day MA, XLM is ready to show a little movement? Be sure to look at the other indicators I explained in my prior post for more reassurance. |

"body": "Hey guys, Cameron here. I've been really busy the past couple days, and haven't had a chance to write. | body | After deciding to take a little bit more anfractuous route on the quest of knowledge today, I decided I'd spend a couple hours learning about Hannibal, the Carthaginian military leader that is often claimed to be the best in all of history (pretty bold claim, huh?) I'll start by outlining his early life, perhaps indicating some of the things that lead him down his path (hint: he did not like Rome (the powerhouse of the times) all too much.) Then, I'll outline his achievements, and finally, I'll close with his final days and some insights as to what I believe is important about knowing his story. I'll start by saying that we really don't know all too much about this guy. Despite consistently being proclaimed as one of the greatest generals in antiquity (kinda douchey way of saying ancient history), he has no surviving biography, and most accounts of him are by his enemies (roman historians). We also little to nothing about his wife or alleged son beyond his wives name. Hannibal (also known as Hannibal Barca) was born in 247 BCE to Hamilcar Barca, who was the general of the Carthaginian forces for the first Punic War (basically fought between the massive Roman empire and Carthage over Sicily, an area originally controlled by Carthage but smack dab in between North Africa (Carthage territory) and Italy (Rome territory). So as ancient greek historian Polybius (I may write about him next) tells it, Hannibal's father invited Hannibal to join him on an expedition to Spain when he was only 9 years of age. Before their departure, his father lead him to an altar and a sacrificial victim (pretty creepy shit if you ask me), where he proceeded to tell Hannibal to put his hand on the victim and swear eternal disdain for Rome (getting back to that point about really not liking Rome too much). Hannibal was happy to do it. In Spain, Hannibal learned how to fight, strategize, but above all else, out-think an opponent (do we still teach this?) Though his brother in law originally took over the troops on his fathers passing, he eventually was killed and Hannibal took over (25 years old) by unanimous decision of the troops. Here's where shit starts getting pretty cool.. So after the first Punic War (war I previously mentioned the Hannibal's father commanded) and the Roman Victory, there was a little bit of bullying going on. Rome essentially told Carthage that they'd "allow" them to stay in Spain only if they paid Rome and tribute (wow, really?). With tension still very pervasive from the first Punic War, Rome decided it'd be a good idea to orchestrate a coupe (uprising) in the city of Saguntum (Western Spain), and install a government not friendly to Carthage (go figure). Hannibal didn't take kindly to this, and sacked the city. Carthage refused to give him up despite Rome's bellowing requests (now that's loyalty money can't buy). This is how the Second Punic War starts. What happens next is likely why Hannibal has been for so long eulogized as one of the greatest leaders in history. He decides he's not going to take big ole Rome's shit, and begins a march towards northern Italy. On the way, he portrays himself as a liberator for the people of Spain, garnering support all along the way. LETS TAKE A QUICK PIT STOP FOR A GEOGRAPHY LESSON. IF YOU WERE NOT ALREADY AWARE, THERE IS A MASSIVE MOUNTAIN RANGE (THE ALPS) DIRECTLY IN HIS WAY. THERE IS NO WAY AROUND. HE IS CARRYING ELEPHANTS. Okay, now that that's out of the way, let me break it down one more time. In order to get to Northern Italy, he had to cross the Alps. He had a large number of supplies, 50,000 infantry, 9,000 calvary, and....elephants...(apparently very useful for terrorizing the Roman forces). Well, as you may have guessed, he went through with the crossing, losing nearly half his troops, and.. you guessed it... almost all of the elephants :(. Not only did the mountains give them a harsh weather(ing) (see what I did there) but also were home to many hostile tribes (I might be as well If I lived in a freezing mountain range). Well, they made it over, and though Rome found out soon thereafter and sent Scipio (another famous general I may discuss soon) to confront Hannibal, Carthage triumphed at the Ticino River. He would win more battles, and continue to play liberator in Northern Italy to coax others to his side. He sent request for more supplies and siege machines (used to break down heavy doors) but Carthage basically said "nah, looks like you're doing well". While much more can be said, rest assured that Hannibal's wits continued on. Among other things, he distracted Roman forced by tying torches to cattle, and constantly changing dress as to avoid assassination. The battle of Cannae was an example of Hannibal's military brilliance, as, by using a crescent shaped formation and drawing in the aggressive Roman army, was able to nearly obliterate an entire force of 50,000 Romans. At this point, other places began to question Rome's hegemony, which lead to the first Macedonian war. At this point, many in the Carthagianan forces told Hannibal it was time to attack Rome, however he was right to say his mean were simply too worn out. Had Carthage sent reinforcements when he requested, history may be very different. Unfortunately, the son of the aforementioned Scipio was soon to rain on the parade. He swiftly reclaimed Spain for Rome, little to the knowledge of Hannibal. Scipio decided it was time to march on Carthage. He was met by Hannibal at the battle of Zama in Northern Africa. Scipio had studied Hannibal's tactics just as Hannibal had been doing for so long. Tricking Hannibal with a horizontal front line and vertical formation behind, Scipio was able to turn the elephants against Hannibal, and end the Second Punic War. Hannibal had a successful career thereafter, but whether it be anger for losing the war or jealously, his fellow statesmen didn't stay on his side. Further, Rome pressured Scipio, who pardoned Hannibal and deemed him an "honorable man". Knowing he was out favor, he fled to Asia Minor. One thing lead to another, and eventually Hannibal discovered the futility of his situation. He took his own life in 183 BCE, not allowing the Romans to do so instead. Scipio died the same year, with instructions to be buried outside of Rome. Cool fact: Roman mothers used to tell their children "Hannibal ad Porto" which translates to "Hannibal is at the door" to frighten them to bed. Though he met an untimely end, it is clear he is perhaps one of the greatest generals the world has ever seen. After all, he managed to cross the alps (with elephants) consistently crush one of the most powerful entities the world has ever seen, and occupy Italy for 15 years. I hope this was cool to read, please feel free to leave questions/comments. Peace (: ps: sorry for any typo's, I didn't have much time to proofread. |

| body | Hi, Cameron here. Today I'm going to write a post about the yield curve, and explain it in a macroeconomic context. I'll start by saying that college hasn't taught me much if anything about the curve. In fact, while it has been mentioned, it was little more than a picture in an otherwise long chapter about discounting the present value of bonds. Pretty absurd to skip over something so important for something so easy to do and understand. Funny that this is how McCombs School of Business prefers to teach. There are three types of yield curves, which represent the differences in return for short term and long term bonds. For a quick fact check, "yield" means interest rate. Higher yield means higher interest rate and more money to be made for those investing in the bonds. 1. Normal (upward sloping) : Picture this like an exponential upward sloping graph. This means that bonds with shorter maturities (time until they are paid) have lower value than bonds with longer maturities. This makes sense, as you'd expect to return more money in return for locking up your money for a longer period of time. This usually indicates a healthy growing economy. 2. Flat Yield Curve- This is as it sounds, flat. Short term bonds are yielding the same amount of return as long term bonds. This is actually something we are potentially faced with in the economy. In can be a sign of economic slowdown, as interest rates are rising and more people are looking to long term bonds (thus increasing demand and lowering their yields) for stability. This money comes out of the stock market. 3.Inverted Yield Curve - This is very rare, and happens when long term bonds are yielding less than short term bonds. While this can happen for a number of reasons, it implies a great deal of skepticism in the economy, and recession is likely to be present, or follow. I hope this was helpful. As usual, please feel free to ask any questions, I'd love to answer them. |

| body | In the spirit of crypto, being that it's a conversation perennial to steemit (for obvious reasons), I've decided I'll do my first informational post on a few of the indicators I have learned about during my brief excursion into the world of charting. I want to preface with my McCombs School of Business- Finance perspective. In the classes I've taken, we've been taught of something called EMH, or efficient market hypothesis. Basically, it ascribes conditions for markets to ascertain certain levels of efficiency (weak, semi-strong, and strong form) which are then reflected in the price of an underlying asset. While I'll spare the details, it is generally agreed upon that we have weak form efficiency, which boils down to a disparity between technical analysis and the world of academia. Essentially, weak form says that all past information is already incorporated into an assets price, and that technical analysis is simply an understandably human attempt to see patterns that aren't actually there. I digress. I'll now list my five favorite indicators in very simple terms so as to potentially benefit anyone trying to gain a foothold in what's other wise a pretty nebulous space, as well as obviate any misconceptions. 1. Moving Averages (MA)- This shows the average price for a certain time frame (25 days, 50 days, etc). This indicator is GREAT for drawing support and resistance lines, and can signal large reversals, or large breakouts (to the moon, perhaps?) 2. Elliot Wave Theory- This is actually a theory, not an indicator, and is pretty complicated. It basically says that price swings move in impulses, with 5 waves up, and 3 waves down (mind you, all of these waves are are comprised of more than just straight lines). Playing these waves can be very effective, and once you learn the fundamentals of the theory, it's pretty neat to backtest them with old charts (well, maybe just for a college finance major). 3. Relative Strength Index (RSI)- This indicator is pretty commonly eulogized by your run of the mill crypto "millionaires," on youtube. It basically measures price momentum based on the average gains and losses over a certain time period. What you should know (not the math of course) is the when the RSI is around or lower than 20, a stock is usually considered oversold, and vice versa when it is around 80. 4. Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) - The MACD uses the moving averages listed in #1, however, it shows them in comparison to each other, with one diverging of converging with the other. These movements can often signal big price movements when coupled with other indicators. Divergence of newer time period MA from older = potential breakout. 5. On Balance Volume (OBV) - The OBV works by subtracting the volume of a day from the previous volume if the price closes lower, or adding it if the price closes higher. This is a great tool to use to find picks that have a lot of interest. I hope these were helpful, and can lead anyone to the path of better trades after what should be a pretty short read. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask :) |

| body | I'll keep this terse, since I'll likely be one of the only people to ever read this, and I don't find myself that interesting. I want to use this site to help record my thoughts, and support blockchain in the process (something I myself am very fond of). I'm currently a 20 year old business student at the University Of Texas at Austin, though unlike many there i'm not at all sure what will come after. What I do know is that college has instilled within me a desire to learn, and not simply in some skin deep sense that involves regurgitating something I heard someone else tell me, or cramming the night before a test. I want to learn about space, business, history, politics, health.... I want to discuss the conspiracy theories that we are so quick to throw out, and play with the popular points of polarization that we just can't seem to remedy. I want to splatter my own thoughts into words so that I can digest what i'm reading/watching. I want to be SMARTER. The list quickly takes a precipitous fall into the depth's of my mind. For these reasons, I've decided I'm going to post condensed paragraphs everyday of the things I learn (all of this from my current college but continually growing mindset) so that not only can I share some opinion's of these things and write steady paced to ease my monkey mind, but also to create my own archive of knowledge--random but methodical knowledge that is. Of course, this will all be similar to this post in brevity, but will attempt to quickly explain any subject that will aide myself-- and anyone willing to read-- on our path to the ultimate goal: be able to contribute to ANY conversation. Despite my lack of certainty for my future, I surely believe this will be a great way to start. |
