| title | Life in Colombia....the beginning. |
| body | After landing in Colombia (Pereira Airport) the funny thing I always look back on was how I was about to get into a truck we owned that I've never seen in person (a family friend handled it before we got there, found online) to see our new farm that I've never stepped foot on, and to meet our new dog we never met in person (my wife found in a local shelter, she fell in love with the picture). Who does this? We did;) Our adventure had officially started! But, the first few days/weeks/months weren't all that exciting as we had to live with my wife's mother until we figured out our living arrangements on the farm. The home on the property was structurally ok, but needed a lot of work and the family living there at the time (who still does) was the farm manager Javier's (wife & son). We decided we wanted to build a tiny home on a great spot with the best view of the area, but how long will this take? After consulting with a family friend who did construction (that we hired for the job) we found out it would take about 2 months to build. 2 months living with my wife's mother in town wasn't the most fun sounding time (wife's family & mom are wonderful but really anxious to live on our farm) but we had to it. Building here is a little different, since our farm is in the mountains, rural area, regulations aren't as "strict" so it didn't take to long to decide on a floor plan (very simple) and get construction started. The fun part (not) was the daily drive to our farm to oversee construction and work on the farm. The distance from town isn't that far (about 4 miles) but the road is mostly dirt, very bumpy, up and down & around mountains going about 5-10 mph on a very narrow road and when someone is coming the other way you both have to move over to the side as much as possible to fit. 4 wheel drive is the preferred vehicle on this road but cars can make it, weather permitting and if the road is in decent condition. The trip takes about 25-30 minutes one way and when it's over...you're glad it is. I love Colombia, I love the beauty, I love being in nature here......but living in town (city) is not my favorite place. First off, people here are HORRIBLE drivers, I'm sorry to say this but it's true. The worst are motorcycles, they follow no rules, they pass on the left, right, middle, anywhere there's a opening they'll shoot through with no regards of safety or if it's "legal". People driving cars here aren't much better but the funny thing is you rarely see accidents. Back home in AZ during my daily drives I'd always see people in accidents in one form or another but here it's a rare occurrence , strange but true. Cities are so crowded here, traffic is horrible, drivers are terrible, they're noisy, polluted air (from cars mostly) all in all not my favorite place to be. But once in nature here everything feels right.....peaceful, quiet, serene, beautiful, everything we want to lead a simple life together in nature. We are at a point in our lives now where we want to be away from the crowds & noise of a "normal" life and do things are own way, at our own pace, in beautiful surroundings being one with nature (and animals of course, which we love;) and enjoying each other's company. We truly love being together. Oh yeah, about the dog my wife found online at a local shelter. When my wife talked to them about Maximus (his name) they mentioned they had to keep him apart from the other dogs because he was "hard of hearing" and was obsessed with rocks (he loved to play/chew on them). So when we finally got to meet him (my wife's mother watched for a couple weeks before we arrived...and boy did she have fun with that;) we noticed he wasn't hard of hearing, he was completely deaf! He was also very crazy, no manners, just a wild pit bull mix that needed a lot of attention and love. The first few days we were really worried we bit off more than we could chew with this dog as he seemed to challenging to train. It turns out we bought the best tool we could have ever used, something we thought we'd never buy, a shock collar. I know, I know, these things are cruel, bordering on animal cruelty right? Wrong. We bought a good one that vibrated and shocked at different levels (from a light tickle to holy crap that hurts) and immediately put it to good use. Max learned real quick what being a good dog was, or a bad dog, or when to come when we wanted him to...this tool worked perfectly! Turns out Max is a very smart, sweet dog that just needed love to be a great dog and now we love him dearly. Ok, this is long enough for today so I'll stop here. Next post will be about the home construction and other stuff at that time before moving in full-time at the farm. |

| title | Coffee...from our farm to your cups |
| body | We live & work on our farm full-time in Santa Rosa de Cabal, Risaralda Colombia producing our own brand of coffee. With the help of our farm manager Javier (who lives here with us, with wife Soreda, son Diego) who has a lifetime of experience working with coffee we are producing a high quality, single origin, micro lot coffee that is delicious. With hints of chocolate, caramel & almond it's distinct and clean flavor is beginning to win over many coffee drinkers who have been lucky enough to try it. We are now offered in 7 States around the US (listed on our website) or you can order directly from our website at cafezentimana.com . We handle every level of coffee production....from growing, harvesting, processing & solar drying. We are not absentee landlords overseeing a coffee farm that show up from time to time to see how things are going. We wake up everyday here on the farm and do the work, doing this ensures us things are done correctly and the best way possible. We then take to a local roaster here in Colombia to keep money in the local economy. They also handle inspection from the Coffee Federation (a must before exporting) and exporting to the United States. We love the reaction of the roaster when we drop off our parchment coffee and he randomly tests every bag for quality. Because we take the time to process our coffee with great detail we get showered with compliments after inspection. Our roaster, Louis, actually will show other people in the building who might be there how good our quality is by saying "this is how it's done"...he also makes it known that I'm a "gringo" new to the business but doing things the right way. So, by purchasing our coffee you'll accomplish a few things......first, you're supporting a small business trying to do things the right way. Second, you will enjoy a superb cup of Colombian coffee made with a lot of love and dedication to quality. Third, by helping us financially (buying our coffee) soon we will be able to help more and more small farmers (like ourselves) make a better living by buying their coffee at much higher prices than they can get locally. Our goal is to start a "green" coffee supplier side of the business, supplying roasters back in the US with high quality coffee from small, independent, struggling farmers here in Colombia that would love to have their coffee enjoyed by others so far away. This coffee will be very exclusive, never mixed at a co-op, from only small farms that need the most help. Since we live in a coffee growing community high in the Colombian mountains we know first hand how hard it is to be a coffee farmer and we want to help these hard working people the best way we can....and maybe make their life a little better in the process. So please, give our coffee a try by either ordering online or visiting one of our small retailers located throughout the country (WA, WI, MT, OH, OK, TN, NM). We are still aggressively hunting for more places to offer our coffee but if you're not close to any, please just go to our website. We promise you won't be disappointed;) |

"body": "\n\nWe live & work on our farm full-time in Santa Rosa de Cabal, Risaralda Colombia producing our own brand of coffee. \n\n\nWe handle every level of coffee production....from growing, harvesting, processing & solar drying. \n\nWe love the reaction of the roaster when we drop off our parchment coffee and he randomly tests every bag for quality. Because we take the time to process our coffee with great detail we get showered with compliments after inspection. Our roaster, Louis, actually will show other people in the building who might be there how good our quality is by saying \"this is how it's done\"...he also makes it known that I'm a \"gringo\" new to the business but doing things the right way.\n\n\nSo, by purchasing our coffee you'll accomplish a few things......first, you're supporting a small business trying to do things the right way. Our goal is to start a \"green\" coffee supplier side of the business, supplying roasters back in the US with high quality coffee from small, independent, struggling farmers here in Colombia that would love to have their coffee enjoyed by others so far away. This coffee will be very exclusive, never mixed at a co-op, from only small farms that need the most help. Since we live in a coffee growing community high in the Colombian mountains we know first hand how hard it is to be a coffee farmer and we want to help these hard working people the best way we can....and maybe make their life a little better in the process.\n\nSo please, give our coffee a try by either ordering online or visiting one of our small retailers located throughout the country (WA, WI, MT, OH, OK, TN, NM). We are still aggressively hunting for more places to offer our coffee but if you're not close to any, please just go to our website. We promise you won't be disappointed;)\n",

| title | Stuff.....what to do with it. |
| body | We did a great job selling all our belongings, Craigslist really did most of the work and luckily we didn't have to deal with to many weirdos. The next thing was to decide what and how to send stuff we wanted to keep to Colombia, problem was, what do we need? We ended up packing about 19 big boxes full of stuff to Colombia with a service in Los Angeles that specialized in shipping to South America. Packing up all those boxes was a chore, so was deciding what and what not to keep. Not going to bore you with the list of things we brought but if we could do it again.....that list would have changed a bunch. To jump ahead a little bit, once living in Colombia for a short time I started to notice how hard (or impossible) it was to get things that seemed like it should be no problem to find. We have particular tastes....organic food, seeds (for such food), essential oils, certain tools, and so many more things I can't think of right now that are so easy to get back in the US. One thing is for certain, back home, you can get just about anything delivered to your door in just a few days. I've learned that just because something is common and available back home doesn't mean you'll find it here in Colombia, no matter how hard you look...and boy was that a hard thing to get used to, and frustrating. Now that we live in a "tiny" house we've had to adjust to keeping only what's necessary, clutter builds up fast when you have no room to work with, but this is a good thing. Learning to live with less is really the way to go, we had so much stuff in the house back in AZ because we had the space, not anymore. But, when we moved we really noticed how little we needed all those things, mostly they were just comfort items that you get used to having and not really using. Oh, and one other big thing about getting rid of everything you own.....paper!! Tons and tons of paper...stuff you just tuck away really builds up when you put it all in one pile. Our shredder got the biggest workout before we left, my goodness, so much useless paper "stuff" was everywhere. Our recycle bin got filled every week....for weeks, so did our neighbors when they weren't looking;) We also donated a ton of stuff too to various places. You never really notice how much "stuff" is in your life until you try and get rid of it all. Now we're really trying to lead the simple life, uncluttered and knick-knack free and boy is it nice. Actually, we need to get rid of some of the useless junk we shipped over thinking we'd need it...sure glad we spent all that money shipping it;) Gonna keep this one short....but here's the point I'm trying to make....slowly start eliminating all the needless "stuff" you have, don't wait until the last minute. Keep it simple;) Next up....first few months living in Colombia, not on the farm. |

| title | Now.....to buy a farm in Colombia. |
| body | We found our dream farm/home and now needed to actually buy it....how do we do that? Ana was in Colombia, I was back home in AZ, where do we start? We already sold our house with the money sitting in the bank so all we needed to do was get it to Colombia safely, to the right people, for the right property, for the right amount, easy peasy. Another sign that we were doing the right thing was the dollar value at the time vs. the Colombian Peso. Over the years I've always made a habit of checking the dollar vs. Colombian peso to get an idea on what things cost there, are things cheaper or more expensive? Well over the years the ratio was usually around $1 dollar to $2000 Colombian pesos, sometimes as low as $1800, sometimes up to $2200 pesos but always in that range. Well at the time of our discovery and desire to buy the dollar was at the all-time high vs. the Colombian peso, $3400 to $1!! This was incredible, such a fortunate coincidence for us, it made it even more appealing to buy at that time, no time was ever better! So Ana found a family friend who was/is a real estate agent that could handle this process for us, to make it as easy as possible and to be sure we did the right things at the right time. Long story short....Ana did a great job along with the agent to get all the proper paperwork done, to work with the bank to get the info to me and our bank back in AZ, and we made the transfer without any major problems (a few inconvenient things had to be done but nothing crazy). Funny thing is the deed, which does have both our names on it (in Colombia, that's the deal) has no address...we have no address! It's so weird, it talks about trees, plants, and the river that separates our farm from our neighbor's, describing in detail what borders our property. No street, no numbers, so strange;) But hey, it's ours now!! Everyone back home in AZ couldn't believe it when I first told them we did it, we bought a farm in Colombia. I'm sure most people thought we were just blowing smoke, that we wouldn't actually do it, we'd find some excuse to explain why we didn't follow through. Wrong. This was real, the plan was in full motion and there was no turning back.....honestly it was so exciting, who does this right!!?? We we're (and still) willing to risk everything we had to make this dream come true, "regular" life just wasn't doing it for us (me especially) anymore. Work, work, work, drive, drive, drive, bills, bills bills, same thing every month, over and over.....had enough. We don't think we're special, or better, or whatever people might think we are for doing this (crazy is a big one;), we just wanted something different we could do together. Next....how hard it is to get rid of all your stuff, and send the stuff you do want to Colombia. |

No street, no numbers, so strange;) But hey, it's ours now!!\n\nEveryone back home in AZ couldn't believe it when I first told them we did it, we bought a farm in Colombia. I'm sure most people thought we were just blowing smoke, that we wouldn't actually do it, we'd find some excuse to explain why we didn't follow through. Wrong. This was real, the plan was in full motion and there was no turning back.....honestly it was so exciting, who does this right!!?? We we're (and still) willing to risk everything we had to make this dream come true, \"regular\" life just wasn't doing it for us (me especially) anymore. Work, work, work, drive, drive, drive, bills, bills bills, same thing every month, over and over.....had enough. We don't think we're special, or better, or whatever people might think we are for doing this (crazy is a big one;), we just wanted something different we could do together. \n\nNext....how hard it is to get rid of all your stuff, and send the stuff you do want to Colombia.\n\n",

| title | Finding our dream farm |
| body | After many years of taking vacations to Colombia to visit my wife's family, and sometimes looking at farms for fun, we needed to dedicate a visit to only look at farms for sale. This would take time, and since I was working 2 jobs the only decision that made sense was to send Ana back home, by herself, and hunt down our dream farm...if one even existed. So off she went for 3 weeks with a list in hand of all the farms we found online that looked somewhat promising, hopefully one would fit the bill. Once she arrived she immediately got to work visiting a few the first couple days, and we quickly realized that online photos weren't a great representation of what they really were like in person. The story was always the same, the land was great, but the house a mess...or the house was great, and the land was a mess. When I say the house was a mess, picture a home half falling apart, floors just cement and cracked, walls practically crumbling, roof barely on....basically a complete tear down or rebuild. When I say the land was a mess usually that meant dying coffee plants or so overgrown they'd need to be cut down anyway, or the land so steep you'd need legs the size of tree trunks to walk up & down them...not a promising a start to our search. Being that my wife was born & raised in Santa Rosa de Cabal (where we wanted to find our farm) meant she had connections, the best being her family that has lived there forever as well. Her Uncle was one that turned out to be the savior as he was helping my wife in this quest for the perfect farm. How he helped was using his connections in town...picture a big park in the center of town where old timers just sit around and talk, watch people come and go, and get all the latest insider news about the town and people living in it. Thankfully my wife's Uncle was connected to these kind of people and heard about a few farms for sale not listed on the fancy "internet" or local papers....just owners telling some friends that they wanted to sell their farms if the right deal came along. So off Uncle went, looking on his own at a few of these farms and then thinking he might have found what Ana told him she was looking for...took a few pictures and showed her the following day. Ana looked briefly at the photos and thought, maybe, better she go look for herself before getting too excited, pictures have tricked us before. She took the long and winding dirt road to the farm in a old Jeep Willy that are everywhere here (like Taxi's) and finally arrived to the farm her Uncle thought could be the one. As soon as the Jeep stopped the first positive sign hit her right in the ears.....the sound of water. A big river wraps around 2/3 of the farm (also it's border to other farms) and is so loud it's all you hear, well, except for all the birds as too (another one of wife's favorite things)which makes for a pleasant all around sound. She then got to tour the existing house on the property where the worker family was living (and still to this day, luckily, more on that later) which wasn't the greatest, but not nearly as bad as some others she toured through, workable at least. She then walked out toward the grass fields where the best part of the farm came into play, the view, the million dollar view that stopped her in her tracks as she gazed upon it's beauty. A spot where the river bends around the property then straightens out and runs into the distance, which is between two big mountain ranges creating a flat spot in in-between. Perfect. This was a view she's dreamed about since she was a child, so wonderful and peaceful, secluded but not too much, quiet but sounds of running water, all kinds of birds flying by, nesting, chirping and just being birds all around the property....this was it, this is what my wife Ana was looking for when she envisioned us finding a farm to build our dream upon. Not only all of this, but coffee too, lots of it and in good shape....potential income which we would need to make this dream work. My phone rang immediately after Ana soaked all this in, to tell me the good news, she found our farm. I could hear the excitement in her voice as she described everything in great detail, I had no doubt this must be the one. Now the big question, well, to me it was...... how much? As I waited for only a couple seconds for her answer my mind raced through a dozen scenarios of how can we get enough money to buy this wonderful farm and be able to live there without being completely broke. Then she said the number......what? What was that again? Really? I couldn't believe my ears, the price was much lower than most we had looked at already...how can that be? Who cares right? I yelled out "buy the dang thing now!", Ana wasn't sure if I was joking or not. How could I be so sure by just her description, didn't I want to come see for myself or take more time to decide? Heck no.....why wait, I could tell from her description and joy telling it that I had nothing to worry about, I trust my wife with my life, totally and completely, if she really believed this was the one, I knew it had to be. Time to get the ball rolling. This was fate knocking and I was ready to fling that door open! Next up....buying a farm in Colombia and saying goodbye to "home". |

| body | So the decision was made, we're gonna move to Colombia and buy a coffee farm. Why buy a coffee farm? Income will be needed since we can't live off savings forever, especially since we don't have that much to begin with...so we'll need as much money as possible saved up before we go. First step, make as much money possible before we move which meant I needed to earn more than I was at the time (self employed, floor cleaning company). I knew a guy in the car business who needed a good salesman at his place (Acura) so I asked him if it was ok to work only the night shift because I needed to do my business during the day, he (they) accepted. He accepted because we worked together in the past and knew I could get the job done, I also promised him I'd work my tail off since I needed money. For the next 4 years I worked 2 jobs, my business was doing ok during the day and selling cars at night really paid off, I had some incredible months. Not too much free time during those 4 years but I had a goal to reach and this was only temporary....light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. I also needed to sell my company/equipment before this adventure could begin so the hunt was on to find a person best suited and able to buy my business, and we got extremely lucky. A new guy selling cars with me mentioned he wasn't enjoying the job and wanted something to do on his own (new to AZ as well) so I mentioned my situation, he was interested. Long story short, he ended up buying my company so it worked out great for both of us, another step completed! Next, to sell our house and everything in it, no easy chore. Months of renovation to get the house perfect (another long story short) paid off as we sold the house in about 2 weeks. Even better, the guy buying couldn't move in for 6 months so we rented it back from him so we wouldn't have to move, we just had so sell all our belongings in that 6 months. That was fun, Craigslist was used like crazy selling everything from bedroom furniture, to tv's, pictures, everything worth money in that house was put on CL and we sold dang near it all. Couple of yard sales too did the trick along with some donations to local charities and we were down to practically nothing....and more money for the move. The hardest thing to sell was my old '96 4Runner, I loved that thing, best car I ever owned, never a problem, a workhorse, perfect. I wish we could have brought with us but used cars can't be taken into Colombia from the US, so a friend's sister ended up buying it, and loving it as well. I go over all this rather quickly but selling everything you own is no easy feat and took a lot of work, but when you have a goal to reach you just get it done. One thing that I haven't brought up is....why would we be selling everything without knowing where we're gonna live? Good question....next is the story of my wife finding the farm of our dreams. |

| body | Years ago my wife and I thought it would be great to just ditch everything we had in Arizona, move to Colombia, buy a coffee farm and live a simple life. The more and more we thought about it the more and more I (husband Tim) wanted to make it happen. My wife (Ana) wasn't never quite sure I was serious as it would be a great leap of faith for me, a AZ native to give up everything and move to a country where I knew little about, and spoke even less of the language. However, she also knew I loved Colombia, we traveled many times to visit her family and each time it was harder and harder for me to come back to the deserts of Arizona. Don't get me wrong, I love AZ, born in Tempe, grew up in the East Valley and never seriously thought I would ever move to another state....let alone another country. As time went on the idea kept growing in my mind about making such a big move, was I crazy? Or did I finally reach the point where I was ready to take a chance and do something different with my life. I already found the perfect companion for this adventure, my wife always wanted to live on a farm but never thought it would be possible...and now she was married to a crazy gringo who thought...why not?? I really believed we could do it, we make a great team, we never fight, we work well together, and she's my best friend who I never get tired of being around. So, after a lot of thinking I just said screw it......we're doing it! Well, that was the easy part, to make it happen was another thing, well, a lot of other things.....to be continued;) |
