The richly ornamented 4-wheel chariot dates back to the end of the second century AD.\n\nThis is one of the very few cases where archaeologists can trace the entire pattern of ritual practices accompanying burials of prominent Thracian people who believed in a better after-life. The deceased were to be laid with all the objects they needed during their lifetime. The richer and nobler the dead person, the more exuberant the burial gifts.\n\nThe bronze-plated wooden chariot is decorated with scenes from Thracian mythology - the god Eros, a jumping panther and a mythological animal with the body of a panther and the tail of a dolphin. It has wheels 4 feet in diameter. Four wheeled chariots are an extremely rare find, and this one is particularly notable because of the large diameter of its wheels.\n\nThe presence of wood in an archaeological site is usually connected with its usage in different activities: construction, instruments of production, etc. Well preserved wooden parts of chariots were found for the first time in the territory of Bulgaria.\n\nTable pottery, glass vessels, well-preserved wooden and leather objects, some of which may have been horse harnesses, and other gifts were also discovered at the funerary mound. All artifacts were used for the funeral of a wealthy Thracian aristocrat.\n\n## The Eastern Mound - Chariot and Tomb of a Thracian Aristocrat from 1st Century AD\n\nThe unique 4-wheeled ancient chariot found at Karanovo is displayed in its original place at an archaeological complex entitled ‘The Eastern Mound’ and located near the town of Nova Zagora, right off the Trakiya highway.",

They are scattered at the foot of a massive cirque that includes the peaks Suhi Chal (Dry Peak), Otovishki, and Haramiya.\n\nEach lake is named after its most characteristic feature. The highest one is called Salzata (‘The Tear’) due to its crystal-clear waters. The next one in height is named Okoto ('The Eye’) after its almost perfectly oval form.\n\nBabreka ('The Kidney’) is the lake with the steepest shores of the entire group. Bliznaka ('The Twin’) is the largest one by area. Trilistnika ('The Trefoil’) has an irregular shape and low shores. The shallowest lake is Ribnoto Ezero ('The Fish Lake’) and the lowest one is Dolnoto Ezero ('The Lower Lake’).\n\n## How to get to the Seven Rila Lakes from Sofia\n\nThe lakes are in around 2-hour car drive from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Most buses that head down to Blagoevgrad, Bansko, Gotse Delchev, Sandanski, Petrich, Thessaloniki, will drop you at Dupnitsa.\n\nOnce you get to Dupnitsa, you can either get a taxi in front of the bus station directly to Pionerska Hut, located next to the bottom lift station of the Rila Lakes Hut, or you can get the local bus from Dupnitsa to the village of Sapareva Banya, get off in front of the municipality hall of Sapareva Banya and get in a shuttle bus to the Rila lakes. Image via [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/)_\n\nDuring the late Roman Empire, several Roman provinces covered the territory that comprises present–day Bulgaria: Scythia, Moesia, Thrace, Macedonia, Dacia (Coastal and Inner, both south of Danube), Dardania, Rhodope (Roman province) and Haemismontus, and had a mixed population of Byzantine Greeks, Thracians and Dacians.\n\nIn the 5th century, Attila's Huns attacked the territories of today's Bulgaria and pillaged many Roman settlements. By the end of the 6th century, Avars organized regular incursions into Northern Bulgaria, which were a prelude to the en masse arrival of the Slavs.\n\nThe Slavs emerged from their original homeland (most commonly thought to have been in Eastern Europe) in the early 6th century and spread to most of Eastern Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, thus forming three main branches – the West Slavs, the East Slavs and the South Slavs. The latter group settled on the territory of modern Bulgaria during the 6th century.\n\nIn 680 the semi–nomadic Bulgar tribes, under the leadership of Asparukh, moved South across the Danube and settled in the area between the lower Danube and the Balkan, establishing their capital at Pliska. A peace treaty with Byzantium in 681 marked the beginning of the First Bulgarian Empire.\n\nSucceeding rulers strengthened the Bulgarian state throughout the 8th and 9th centuries. Krum doubled the country's territory, killed Byzantine emperor Nicephorus I in the Battle of Pliska, and introduced the first written code of law. Image via [Wikimedia Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)_\n\nAfter reaching its apogee in the 1230s, Bulgaria started to decline due to a number of factors, most notably its geographic position which rendered it vulnerable to simultaneous attacks and invasions from many sides.\n\nA relatively thriving period followed after 1300, but ended in 1371, when factional divisions caused Bulgaria to split into three small Tsardoms. By 1396, they were subjugated by the Ottoman Empire. The Turks eliminated the Bulgarian system of nobility and ruling clergy, and Bulgaria remained an integral Turkish territory for the next 500 years.\n\nWith the decline of the Ottoman Empire after 1700, signs of revival started to emerge. This revision left large populations of ethnic Bulgarians outside the new country and defined Bulgaria's militaristic approach to foreign affairs and its participation in four wars during the first half of the 20th century.\n\nUnder the Treaty of Neuilly (November 1919) Bulgaria ceded its Aegean coastline to Greece, recognized the existence of Yugoslavia, ceded nearly all of its Macedonian territory to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and had to give Dobruja back to Romania. The country had to reduce its army to no more than 22 000 men and pay reparations exceeding $400 million.
