After trying to understand how the tornado had blown that hamburger from the kitchen freezer to that bedroom, I finally asked my brother to explain. He laughed and told me that the frozen hamburger was used as an ice-pack in a bedroom triage that they had set up for injured people, after the tornado had passed. \n\nNow 7 years later, the Joplin tornado is in many regards a distant memory and everything is back to normal for everyone I know. But even for me, a person who escaped the destruction, there are daily reminders of that day. There’s a scar on my arm where one of the dogs bit me as my brother and I were rescuing them. I somehow acquired a flat screen TV, for a back room, that came from the rubble of my brother’s house. There’s a ding in the screen from the tornado, but I just watch that TV to catch the weather in the morning. Lastly, there’s a trailer my father owned that I rebuilt from lumber that used to be my brother’s house. My father, brother, and I now share ownership in that trailer, anytime one of us needs to pull something down the road.",

I had been in that convenience store every single time I had visited my brother and family over the years and now it was a 20-foot pile of rubble with an upside-down car laying on top of it.\n\nWhen we arrived at my brother’s house I was by then predisposed to seeing anything that would not surprise me, but still it was unbelievable. One vivid memory I have is how hard it was to get into the house where some walls were still standing. The debris was hard enough to traverse, but the nature of it was even worse. Boards with nails sticking out of them and sharp pieces of metal made every step I took, a serious concern. Once inside the remains of the house, we first got the dogs out to our make-shift cage, using a better route we found out of the rubble. We then stuffed any rain-soaked cloths we could find into trash bags. We probably used 30 bags, because the wet cloths were so heavy. While my brother searched out his important papers, I looked around and tried to comprehend what being in the tornado must have been like. While doing this, I discover all kinds of strange things that I had to study. In the bed where brother had sheltered the strangers that evening, I found a 5-pound tube of half frozen hamburger. After trying to understand how the tornado had blown that hamburger from the kitchen freezer to that bedroom, I finally asked my brother to explain. He laughed and told me that the frozen hamburger was used as an ice-pack in a bedroom triage that they had set up for injured people, after the tornado had passed. \n\nNow 7 years later, the Joplin tornado is in many regards a distant memory and everything is back to normal for everyone I know. But even for me, a person who escaped the destruction, there are daily reminders of that day. There’s a scar on my arm where one of the dogs bit me as my brother and I were rescuing them. I somehow acquired a flat screen TV, for a back room, that came from the rubble of my brother’s house. There’s a ding in the screen from the tornado, but I just watch that TV to catch the weather in the morning. Lastly, there’s a trailer my father owned that I rebuilt from lumber that used to be my brother’s house. My father, brother, and I now share ownership in that trailer, anytime one of us needs to pull something down the road.",
