| title | The Famous Joplin Tornado - My Experience |
| body | Most everyone knows about the Joplin tornado of 2011 that killed 168 people and wiped out a good portion of the city. This is my experience of how it all happened. I was at the collage that Sunday for my niece’s high school graduation. The collage gymnasium was needed to accommodate the large crowd. It had been a beautiful day back at my brother’s house where all the family had met in the yard for pictures before attending that event. The collage is at about 4th street and later I would find out the tornado totally flattened 15th to 28th streets in Joplin, from east to west across the entire city. Arriving late, my family and friends ended up sitting at the top of the bleachers on the Northwest corner of the venue. The ceremony was rather long and from that distance I got a little bored and stepped outside for a little while. It was a warm day, but not terribly uncomfortable. The sky was a very eerie gray, but I didn’t ponder that fact too much at the time. I then returned to my seat in the bleachers in time to see my niece receive her high school diploma. As my family and friends slowly filed out, I left word with everyone that I would be going to get the car in hopes of beating some of the traffic. I made my way through a basement area where the reception was to be held and then back up to an exit where the upper parking lot was. I then walked to the far end of the lower parking lot where we were parked. As I got near the car I ran into some extended family that I hadn’t seen in years. I walked over to them and had a short conversation. In less than a couple of minutes, as we were talking, tornado sirens went off. I bid quick farewells and then ran to jump in the car and flip on the radio. Upon flipping on the radio, I immediately found a station that was already tracking the tornado. Their estimation was that it would hit the city in 20 minutes, Being the tornado was coming from the West, and we were on the East side of the city, I calculated a possible extra 5 minutes of escape time. I made note of the current time and started a count-down in my head. I drove the car up to the upper parking lot next to the building. When I reached that lot, the second siren went off. I then jumped out of the car to grab my family and friends and get them in the car. My plan was to get us all as far North and East as possible. By the time I found all of them it was 10 minutes later, or 15 minutes until we were at ground-zero. Looking back on this pivotal moment in time, I realize now, I might have saved several lives had I worked to get as many people as possible into a safe place in the building. But I had already clicked into self-survival mode for my family, friends, and self, at that time. As a reference point for the time-line, there is a famous National Geographic special about the Joplin tornado and in that special, there is footage of a woman saying, “We come out of graduation and there’s a tornado”. That woman was my friend and the people on camera are my father, mother, and brother. That siren was the second siren, and this was seconds before I contacted my party of people. As I said, the clock in my head had ticked down to 15 minutes, but even with my expressed concern about the danger we were all in, I had to physically push everyone toward the car. By the time I did get everyone to the car, the count-down was at 10 minutes. Though everyone in the car understood that a tornado was coming, no one understood what I had been following on radio, very intensely, for 15 minutes. There was a large and very destructive tornado that was going to reach us in 10 minutes and only I seemed to be grasping this fact! As I pulled the car out to leave, I found that we were deadlocked in traffic. To exit the collage, there was one road between the upper parking lot where we now were, and the lower parking lot where we had previously been parked. It was a bottle-neck situation. My time-line clock was now down to 5 minutes, so I whipped the car into the empty oncoming lane and passed 15 or 20 cars ahead of us that were in a traffic dead-lock. Everybody in the car scolded me for this action, calling me rude. No, I thought, we have 5 minutes to escape death. Then as we reached the main road, my mother suggested we turn right and go to my brother’s house to ride out the storm. Had we done that, I would later learn, we would have been inside a tornado that killed 168 people. Luckily, I followed my tunnel-vision plan of getting us North and West of the storm. I turned left and drove as fast as possible, turning North or East as the roads presented themselves. Within a quarter mile from the collage, skies turned pitch black and rains were torrential. Hail stones that hit the car sounded like anvils being dropped on us. Road signs were flapping like flags on a flag pole. My thoughts were that we could be blown off the road at any time, but I kept driving East and North. Finally, it appeared we had outrun the storm, to a degree. It was still pitch-black outside, but the rain had let up a little. We reached a business that was one-part convenience store and one-part restaurant. We decided to stop there for shelter. We informed everyone in the restaurant and store that there was a massive tornado in the area and everyone should get into the bathrooms. Several of those people were not from the Midwest and had a lot of questions about what to do. I told them to trust me and not panic, because I was sure we were enough North of the path, having driven the path I drove. Once everyone was settled, I stepped out to see what was happening outside. At that moment, winds became very strong. The winds were so strong in fact, I thought the large corporate sign out front was going to blow over. However, it did not. I would later find out that our location was 3 miles North of where the tornado passed. The winds I had witnessed were inflow, not the tornado. Though the weather had finally calmed, the sky was still pitch-black. I walked back to the bathrooms to tell everyone that the storm may have passed. Then I looked at my father who was hanging up a cell phone. There was a very blank look on his face. I asked him what was wrong. He told me my brother’s house was gone. Fortunately, everyone was OK thanks to a small cubby-hole shelter my brother had built years earlier. But there was no consoling my father as he insisted we get to Joplin right away. This was about his 3 grand daughters who were now homeless. Being a much more pragmatic thinker than my father, who is simply a man who does everything for his family, we began to argue. My argument was that there would be no way to get into Joplin that evening and we should go home and compile resources first. I eventually won that argument and we headed home. As we drove, I will never forget how we were in bright sunshine, having just spent the previous couple of hours in pitch darkness. I got home with my group of family early that evening and we watched news to see what we could learn. My brother’s family spent most of the night finding a way out of Joplin and finally made it to my parent’s house about 4 AM the next morning. After everyone had slept late into the morning, I arrived at my parent’s house and started planning, with my brother, what to do in starting a recovery. We decided on 3 basic things we would do when we got back to Joplin. One thing was to pick up his 3 dogs that had survived. Another thing was to locate important papers that were in a lock-box and to find everyone some wearable cloths. Lastly, we wanted to look at the rubble in the daylight, to access what else could be salvaged and what clean up was going to involve. My brother and I loaded up a truck with everything we thought we would need and started the 2-hour trip back to Joplin. It was about 1 PM as my brother and I hit the road. This was going to be my first opportunity to be with my brother in one-on-one company where I would be able to get his story about the night before. He told me they arrived home right as the tornado was about to hit. Giant trees were already blowing over in his yard and the whole family had to run to the shelter the second they arrived. My brother’s house was on the East end of town at 26th street, 2 blocks within the main rotation of the tornado. As my brother was getting the family into the shelter, a group of strangers knocked on his door seeking shelter as well. My brother had built his shelter only to have enough space for his family. So, having to think quickly, he directed these strangers into a bedroom and told them to get on the box-springs as he threw the mattress over them. This action saved those people’s lives. I won’t go too deep into my brother’s story here, because the drama and emotion are its own story, but his description was jaw-dropping. None of them thought they were going to survive, even within the relative safety of the shelter. I’ll simply say he told me it was the loudest and most violent thing he’d ever heard, and he felt the sensation of being sucked out of the shelter during the entire ordeal. As we finally traveled into Joplin, by a route my brother had found during their many hours of escape the night before, I started to see incredible damage. For 10 or 15 blocks I was being amazed at what I saw. But then we broke the tree line and I fell into a dream-state of unbelief. For as far as I could see in every direction, there was nothing but total devastation. We entered the round-about at 20th street and I saw the now famous convenience store where the Youtube video sensation was shot. I had been in that convenience store every single time I had visited my brother and family over the years and now it was a 20-foot pile of rubble with an upside-down car laying on top of it. When we arrived at my brother’s house I was by then predisposed to seeing anything that would not surprise me, but still it was unbelievable. One vivid memory I have is how hard it was to get into the house where some walls were still standing. The debris was hard enough to traverse, but the nature of it was even worse. Boards with nails sticking out of them and sharp pieces of metal made every step I took, a serious concern. Once inside the remains of the house, we first got the dogs out to our make-shift cage, using a better route we found out of the rubble. We then stuffed any rain-soaked cloths we could find into trash bags. We probably used 30 bags, because the wet cloths were so heavy. While my brother searched out his important papers, I looked around and tried to comprehend what being in the tornado must have been like. While doing this, I discover all kinds of strange things that I had to study. In the bed where brother had sheltered the strangers that evening, I found a 5-pound tube of half frozen hamburger. After trying to understand how the tornado had blown that hamburger from the kitchen freezer to that bedroom, I finally asked my brother to explain. He laughed and told me that the frozen hamburger was used as an ice-pack in a bedroom triage that they had set up for injured people, after the tornado had passed. Now 7 years later, the Joplin tornado is in many regards a distant memory and everything is back to normal for everyone I know. But even for me, a person who escaped the destruction, there are daily reminders of that day. There’s a scar on my arm where one of the dogs bit me as my brother and I were rescuing them. I somehow acquired a flat screen TV, for a back room, that came from the rubble of my brother’s house. There’s a ding in the screen from the tornado, but I just watch that TV to catch the weather in the morning. Lastly, there’s a trailer my father owned that I rebuilt from lumber that used to be my brother’s house. My father, brother, and I now share ownership in that trailer, anytime one of us needs to pull something down the road. |

"title": "The Famous Joplin Tornado - My Experience",
"body": "\nMost everyone knows about the Joplin tornado of 2011 that killed 168 people and wiped out a good portion of the city. This is my experience of how it all happened.\n\nI was at the collage that Sunday for my niece’s high school graduation. The collage gymnasium was needed to accommodate the large crowd. It had been a beautiful day back at my brother’s house where all the family had met in the yard for pictures before attending that event. The collage is at about 4th street and later I would find out the tornado totally flattened 15th to 28th streets in Joplin, from east to west across the entire city.\n\nArriving late, my family and friends ended up sitting at the top of the bleachers on the Northwest corner of the venue. \n\nAs my family and friends slowly filed out, I left word with everyone that I would be going to get the car in hopes of beating some of the traffic. \n\nUpon flipping on the radio, I immediately found a station that was already tracking the tornado. But I had already clicked into self-survival mode for my family, friends, and self, at that time.\n\nAs a reference point for the time-line, there is a famous National Geographic special about the Joplin tornado and in that special, there is footage of a woman saying, “We come out of graduation and there’s a tornado”. That woman was my friend and the people on camera are my father, mother, and brother. That siren was the second siren, and this was seconds before I contacted my party of people.\n\nAs I said, the clock in my head had ticked down to 15 minutes, but even with my expressed concern about the danger we were all in, I had to physically push everyone toward the car.
