| body | Polars Official Video https://youtu.be/1pYzmliJE2k We offer a completely new DeFi concept for the prediction market. POLARS PLATFORM is a decentralized platform for creating secured polar tokens, the price of which depends on the results of specific external events. Within the POLARS platform, users can buy, sell, and exchange polar tokens, as well as participate in the distribution of platform commission income. The first polar token pair available for trading on the POLARS platform are the WHITE and BLACK polar tokens. Let’s take a quick look at the general principles of the POLARS platform. There are two opposing teams White Team and Black Team. They are constantly competing with each other. Each team has its own token of the same name, WHITE and BLACK. Initially, the price of these tokens was the same. If the White Team wins, then the price of the WHITE token will rise, and the price of the BLACK token will fall by the same amount. But their aggregate price will remain stable. If the Black Team wins, then the price of the BLACK token will rise, and the price of the WHITE token will fall by the same amount. But their aggregate price will remain stable. Which team wins is influenced by the outcome of a particular event from the outside world. It can be sports competitions, presidential elections, exchange rates and any other types of competitions in which there are opposing sides. One opponent goes to the White Team side, and the other goes to the Black Team side. Every day in the world there are many events in which someone can win and lose, predictions can come true or not come true, conditions are met or not. The most interesting and significant of these events are added to the POLARS platform and the results of these events consistently affect the victory or loss of the White or Black Team, and, accordingly, cumulatively affect the price of WHITE and BLACK tokens. Every day from 5 to 15 different events take place on the platform, which constantly change the prices of the WHITE and BLACK tokens, which creates ideal volatility for these tokens. It is worth noting again that no matter how the price of the WHITE and BLACK tokens change, their aggregate price remains unchanged. POLARS. Smart contracts device. We propose seeing how the POLARS DeFi platform and its ecosystem are technically arranged. The platform has several levels of pools: Basic pool, Secondary pool, Trade pool + third-party pools outside the platform. Initially, all WHITE and BLACK tokens are minted in the base pool and from there users can take them at a fixed aggregate price in the same amount, in return putting the base asset in the base pool as collateral. It is worth noting that only 2 tokens can be taken from the Basic Pool at the same time in the same quantity at their fixed aggregate price. The user can always return back all the WHITE and BLACK tokens at a fixed price and get their underlying asset back. Thus, each WHITE and BLACK token that is outside the base pool is necessarily fully backed by the underlying asset from the base pool at the current fixed aggregate price of the WHITE and BLACK tokens. It is worth noting that the aggregate price of WHITE and BLACK tokens never decreases, ensuring 100% safety of the user’s investment. Then users can place the WHITE and BLACK tokens received in the base pool in the secondary pool, trading pool and third-party liquidity pools, where other users can buy, sell and exchange WHITE and BLACK tokens. Consider a secondary pool design that has several unique features. In it, the prices of WHITE and BLACK tokens are fixed and there is no such thing as slippage in this pool. The prices of WHITE and BLACK tokens change after the end of each event according to the results of that event It is important to note that immediately during the event, the secondary pool is closed and transactions cannot be made in it. You can make unlimited transactions at a fixed price before the start of the event and immediately after it ends, up to the moment the next event starts but what if you want to buy or sell tokens directly during the event? There is a trading pool for this as well as third-party pools on other DEX. They work around the clock. The trading pool works in the same way as standard pools on other platforms. This is a fork of the balancer pool. Market makers place liquidity in a pool and users can buy and sell tokens without restrictions. The price in these pools is formed exclusively by supply and demand. But as soon as the event ends and the Secondary Pool opens with a new fixed price of WHITE and BLACK tokens, arbitrage opportunities appear that almost instantly equalize the prices in all existing pools according to the fixed price in the secondary pool. This mechanism allows you to get ideal volatility with predicted periods of price changes that are suitable for traders, betters and other Prediction Market players. POLARS. Additional elements of the ecosystem. Let’s talk about the rest of the POLARS ecosystem. Consider the Governance Token (POL), voting mechanism, yield farming and fee distribution of the POLARS platform Next let’s consider the main provisions of the Governance Token (POL). This token is used to manage the POLARS platform in the form of voting. Also, 30% of all commissions on the POLARS platform are distributed among the POL token holders. Staking POL tokens will allow users to increase APY from yield farming. The POL token is Accrued as a yield for activities on the POLARS platform. We should also consider the yield farming mechanisms within the POLARS ecosystem. In the POL tokenomics, 70% of tokens are allocated for yield farming. In order to receive a reward in POL tokens, a user can perform several types of activities: - Provide liquidity to WHITE and BLACK tokens to secondary and trading pools on the POLARS platform and third-party accredited pools uniswap, sushiswap, balancer, pancakeswap and others. (50% of farming allocation) - Make trading volume on the POLARS platform (15% of farming allocation) - Invite referrals who will perform trading volume on the POLARS platform (15% of farming allocation) - Participate in votings on the POLARS platform. (10% of farming allocation) - Provide liquidity for the POL-ETH, POL-USDC pair on the Uniswap platform (5% of farming allocation) - Testing Polars Platform and marketing Airdrop (5% of farming allocation) Let’s also consider the mechanics of fee distribution on the POLARS platform. The standard swap fee on the platform is 0.3%. Of these, 50% goes to market makers who provided liquidity, 20% goes to the base pool to increase the total value of WHITE and BLACK tokens, 30% is distributed among holders of the governing POL tokens. Finally we should consider the mechanisms of voting on the POLARS platform. There are 2 types of polls: users and fundamental. User votes include voting for choosing an event that will affect the price of WHITE and BLACK tokens at a specific date and time, voting for the transfer of a Unit from one team to another, and voting for increasing or decreasing the price volatility of WHITE and BLACK tokens within a specific event. … Fundamental votings are votes to change the functionality of the POLARS platform, for example, adding a new asset to provide WHITE and BLACK tokens, changing the size of commissions, or changing oracles. To participate in any voting on the POLARS platform, the user needs POL tokens. Voting smart contracts use the POL token delegation mechanics. POLARS. Earning opportunities. Consider the options for making money on the POLARS platform. First, you should divide the platform users into several categories: - Traders, players or betters. - Market makers, liquidity providers - Arbitrageurs - Investors and owners of POL tokens. Consider earning opportunities for each of the categories presented. Traders, players and betters are encouraged to buy WHITE or BLACK tokens in the hope that the token they bought will grow as a result of the victory of the respective team in the upcoming competition. For example: The user made a prediction and thinks that the BLACK TEAM team will win the upcoming competition and the price of the BLACK token will rise. The user buys BLACK tokens. Indeed, in the course of the competition, the BLACK TEAM team won and the price of the BLACK token increased. The user has made a profit. He has several scenarios for further actions: - He can sell BLACK tokens and fix the profits - He can keep BLACK tokens for one or more upcoming events (if he predicts that BLACK TEAM will win again in the upcoming competitions) - He can buy WHITE tokens with available BLACK tokens (if he predicts the WHITE TEAM will win in the upcoming competition) - He can buy the corresponding number of WHITE tokens at a reduced price to the BLACK tokens he has in order to allocate them to liquidity pools, thus becoming a market maker of the platform. Additionally, a user who makes a certain trading volume on the platform receives a reward in the form of POL tokens. Additionally, the user receives a reward in the form of POL tokens if he invites referrals and they create a trading volume on the platform. Additionally, the user can participate in voting on the platform and receive a reward in POL tokens for this. Market makers supply liquidity to WHITE and BLACK tokens to liquidity pools on the POLARS platform. First of all, market makers receive 50% of the commissions for SWAPs made by other users. 20% of swaps fees are sent to the base pool, which increases the total value of the WHITE and BLACK tokens, which increases the market maker’s capital and eliminates the possibility of reducing the cost of the initial capital. Additionally, market makers are rewarded with yield farming in POL tokens. It is worth noting that in the secondary pool, market makers have absolutely no risk of Intermittent losses due to the fixed price for WHITE and BLACK tokens, which significantly increases APY. There is a risk of Intermittent losses in the trade pool, but this is compensated by the 1.5 times increased income from yield farming. Earnings of arbitrageurs. From 5 to 15 events take place on the POLARS platform during the day and after the end of each event, the price of tokens changes. In the secondary pool, this price is fixed, so any deviations in the prices of WHITE and BLACK tokens in the trading and any third-party pools in which the price is generated by supply and demand create constant arbitrage opportunities to balance prices. Holders of POL tokens have the right to receive income in the form of 30% of the commissions of all completed swaps, which is constantly directed to the appropriate pool. Also, holders of POL tokens can send tokens for staking to increase APY for yield farming. | title | Chromia SSO: The whys and the whats |
| body | April 08, 2020 You may have encountered this recent Coindesk article, about ZenGo and the work they are doing to address a security flaw in the Ethereum platform that they call baDAPPprove. The short version is this: the user of an Ethereum dapp can (and usually does) give dapps almost arbitrary privileges merely by using them with commonly available Ethereum wallet software. In practise this means that a malicious dapp could completely drain your account. ZenGo describes the issue as follows: At Toyota they ask "why?" five times to discover root causes. Let’s try it. Why is the user giving complete access to his savings to a malicious decentralized application? Because the wallet does not clearly show a warning about this. Why does the wallet not show a clear warning about this behaviour? Because it is a convention to approve large sums indefinitely to dapps. Why is is it a convention to approve large sums indefinitely to dapps? Because it is “fundamental to allowing smart contracts to interoperate with tokens” (MetaMask response in Coindesk article). Why is it fundamental for smart contracts to interoperate with tokens? Because in Ethereum all transactions have a cost that must be paid in order for the transaction to go through. And the final "Why?" Why are dapp users being exposed to this kind of risk at all? This is the most difficult to answer. Especially when Chromia has an architecture that avoids the issue entirely, enabling features that make DeFI secure AND easy to use, rather than requiring a choice. Introducing Chromia SSO Chromia SSO is perhaps the most important UX improvement that Chromia offers the decentralized world. It revolutionizes the way users interact with dapps. Any dapp requires users to sign transactions, that means they need a private key. Control of the private key is control of any and all dapps or assets associated with it. This means that private keys have an especially stringent set of security requirements in a blockchain context – they control real value, and there is no recourse if they are compromised or lost. Loss of access is usually addressed by requiring users to write down a mnemonic phrase which can be used to reconstruct the key. Keep it offline and keep it secure. This is quite an onerous requirement. It is clear that there is value in allowing users to interact with a plurality of dapps using the same keypair, as in the Ethereum model. The alternative, creating a new wallet and adding some small amount of tokens, as well as recording that passphrase, for every single dapp, is clearly a massive pain. So, we end up using one unique wallet for all dapps within a certain blockchain ecosystem, usually in the form of a browser extension. As we read above, this model has deeply rooted security issues for which opt-in messages and transparency are a sticking plaster rather than a real solution. So, is there a real solution? First of all Rell, Chromia’s language for blockchain smart contracts, provides much more flexibility than mainstream blockchains, since the complexity and delegation of complex smart rules can take place without requiring the user to trigger the transaction. This is also helped by the fact that Chromia has no inherent requirement for transaction fees. Second, we are introducing few nice features that helps in this direction: Authenticator descriptor Authenticator descriptors allow you to attach multiple keypairs to one account. Believe it or not, you don’t have to remember it. In fact you should not save it and just forget it. The authenticator descriptor is explicitly permitted to send transactions only in the module (smart contract) specified at the moment of delegation. And you can also prevent it from sending money. Furthermore, thanks to Chromia architecture (one chain per dapp), in case the keypair of the authenticator descriptor is compromised, it can only steal the tokens that have been assigned to that dapp. Authenticator descriptor rules Now, let’s say that you create a disposable authorization descriptor, how can you prevent it from draining your assets in case it gets compromised? Well, you can attach rules to it at the moment of creation. So the authenticator descriptor is only valid for a session, it can perform a limited number of operations, be limited in time or blocktime. Or all the conditions together. SSO Lastly the real juice. How can I have different keypair in each dapp by only remembering one passphrase? As we saw it is possible to delegate authenticator descriptors across dapps. This means that if we elect a master account (we do that in Vault chain), and we make sure that the passphrase / keypair we have in there is well protected. We can automatically login to any dapp with a seamless user experience. It is in many ways easier than any other existing unified login system, centralized or not. Once the user has an account in the vault, it only requires 2 clicks to be registered and logged in on any chromia dapp. Just like signing in with Google, or Facebook, only this way the user stays in control. https://chromia.com https://minesofdalarnia.com https://twitter.com/teamchromia https://www.reddit.com/r/Teamchromia https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_FvcRzwoZUmc60fYFj.. https://www.instagram.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://www.linkedin.com/company/chromia https://www.facebook.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://t.me/ChromiaRu |

"body": "\n\n\n\nApril 08, 2020\n\nYou may have encountered this recent Coindesk article, about ZenGo and the work they are doing to address a security flaw in the Ethereum platform that they call baDAPPprove. The short version is this: the user of an Ethereum dapp can (and usually does) give dapps almost arbitrary privileges merely by using them with commonly available Ethereum wallet software. In practise this means that a malicious dapp could completely drain your account. ZenGo describes the issue as follows:\n\n\n\n\nAt Toyota they ask \"why?\" five times to discover root causes. Let’s try it.\n\nWhy is the user giving complete access to his savings to a malicious decentralized application? Because the wallet does not clearly show a warning about this.\n\nWhy does the wallet not show a clear warning about this behaviour? Because it is a convention to approve large sums indefinitely to dapps.\n\nWhy is is it a convention to approve large sums indefinitely to dapps? Because it is “fundamental to allowing smart contracts to interoperate with tokens” (MetaMask response in Coindesk article).\n\nWhy is it fundamental for smart contracts to interoperate with tokens? Because in Ethereum all transactions have a cost that must be paid in order for the transaction to go through.\n\nAnd the final \"Why?\"\n\nWhy are dapp users being exposed to this kind of risk at all?\n\nThis is the most difficult to answer. Especially when Chromia has an architecture that avoids the issue entirely, enabling features that make DeFI secure AND easy to use, rather than requiring a choice.\n\n\nIntroducing Chromia SSO\n\nChromia SSO is perhaps the most important UX improvement that Chromia offers the decentralized world. It revolutionizes the way users interact with dapps.\n\nAny dapp requires users to sign transactions, that means they need a private key. Control of the private key is control of any and all dapps or assets associated with it. This means that private keys have an especially stringent set of security requirements in a blockchain context – they control real value, and there is no recourse if they are compromised or lost.\n\nLoss of access is usually addressed by requiring users to write down a mnemonic phrase which can be used to reconstruct the key. Keep it offline and keep it secure. This is quite an onerous requirement. It is clear that there is value in allowing users to interact with a plurality of dapps using the same keypair, as in the Ethereum model. The alternative, creating a new wallet and adding some small amount of tokens, as well as recording that passphrase, for every single dapp, is clearly a massive pain.\n\nSo, we end up using one unique wallet for all dapps within a certain blockchain ecosystem, usually in the form of a browser extension. As we read above, this model has deeply rooted security issues for which opt-in messages and transparency are a sticking plaster rather than a real solution.\n\nSo, is there a real solution?\n\nFirst of all Rell, Chromia’s language for blockchain smart contracts, provides much more flexibility than mainstream blockchains, since the complexity and delegation of complex smart rules can take place without requiring the user to trigger the transaction. This is also helped by the fact that Chromia has no inherent requirement for transaction fees. Second, we are introducing few nice features that helps in this direction:\n\nAuthenticator descriptor\n\nAuthenticator descriptors allow you to attach multiple keypairs to one account. Believe it or not, you don’t have to remember it. In fact you should not save it and just forget it. The authenticator descriptor is explicitly permitted to send transactions only in the module (smart contract) specified at the moment of delegation. And you can also prevent it from sending money.\n\nFurthermore, thanks to Chromia architecture (one chain per dapp), in case the keypair of the authenticator descriptor is compromised, it can only steal the tokens that have been assigned to that dapp.\n\n\nAuthenticator descriptor rules\n\nNow, let’s say that you create a disposable authorization descriptor, how can you prevent it from draining your assets in case it gets compromised? Well, you can attach rules to it at the moment of creation.\n\nSo the authenticator descriptor is only valid for a session, it can perform a limited number of operations, be limited in time or blocktime. Or all the conditions together.\n\n\nSSO\n\nLastly the real juice. How can I have different keypair in each dapp by only remembering one passphrase?\n\n\n\n\nAs we saw it is possible to delegate authenticator descriptors across dapps. This means that if we elect a master account (we do that in Vault chain), and we make sure that the passphrase / keypair we have in there is well protected. | title | How Colombia is re-thinking its business registry using blockchain |
| body | ChromaWay, in collaboration with the Chambers of Commerce of Barranquilla, Cali and Medellín, is building a platform to increase security, efficiency and transparency of business registration across Colombia. A Country on the Rise Colombia is expected to be one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America, with annual GDP growth expected to reach 3.6% by 2020. Just in the last 10 years, the overall GDP per capita has grown by more than 12%, population below the poverty level has dropped over 13%, and internet penetration is up over 30% and now reaches 62% of the population. Since the signing of the historic Peace Agreement with the FARC in November 2016, that ended a half century long conflict, tourism has played an important role in boosting Colombia’s GDP growth. Tourism is up over 50% since 2017 with visitors taking advantage of the country’s historic sites, beaches, beautiful mountains, and sophisticated urban life. The Challenge Despite substantial progress, Colombia seeks to continue to diversify its economy (away from commodities). Critical to this goal is making Colombia an easier place to do business. Though the country has made enormous progress in this area, Colombia still ranks 100th in “Starting a Business” and 177th on “Enforcing contracts” in the World Bank’s “Ease of Doing Business” rankings. By way of comparison, the business registration process in Colombia is a cumbersome 8 step procedure (New Zealand ranks highest with just a single step process for registration). Registering a business in Colombia means a large amount of paperwork, the need to secure permits and signatures from multiple government agencies, and long waiting times for approval. Maintaining a secure, accurate business registry certainly contributes to the objective of raising trust and distribution critical data, but the time and resource-intensive methods by which the Chambers populate the registry(s) certainly does not. One of the primary challenges the Chambers have is that they are typically put in a position of always trying to figure out and document “what happened yesterday”. In other words, business activity is conducted completely outside of the Chamber and, more importantly, the Chamber has no view into the details of that activity. This ‘black box” includes a lack of knowledge of the identifies of the individuals and entities involved, their financial and business capabilities, and the arrangements and agreements that were executed. As a result, the Chamber can only collect the data based on submitted documents by claimants, but has only limited ability to verify those claims. Enter the Blockchain The Chambers of Barranquilla, Cali, and Medellín came together in an effort, called Chambers2050, to envision a future where they can continue to meet the needs and challenges of local companies while serving as a destination for companies from around the world. That vision includes not only better ways to operate efficiently but disruptive business models that promote growth based on deep integration with other sources of information and validation. As part of this effort, the consortium of chambers approached ChromaWay at the end of 2018 to co-develop a pilot to introduce smart contracts and the blockchain as part of a larger digital strategy to streamline processes and share data securely among business, chamber, and government enterprises. Over the next seven months, the ChromaWay business teams worked with counterparts in Colombia to: Train teams on the fundamentals of blockchains including differences between permissioned and public networks, hashing of data, encryption, smart contracts, public/private keys, and the hosting of distributed ledger nodes. Modeling core registry business processes including core business registration, vendor registration for eligibility for government RFPs, and new processes which would support innovative new products and services that could be offered by the Chamber. Deploy a pilot application and blockchain network to support processing of business registrations. Our technical teams introduced the Chamber teams to ChromaWay’s open source solutions including Postchain, our custom-developed blockchain rooted in relational database technology, Rell (Relational Language), our new purpose-built blockchain programming language, and Esplix, our enterprise-oriented smart contract solution. Figure 1- Smart Contract between Buyers and Sellers Towards a Truly Digital Registry The hands-on experience with the pilot application, stakeholders were able to see how blockchain technologies could transform the Chamber into a truly digital platform businesses. The first phase of the project created a hands-on, modest blockchain-enabled platform to enable smart contract-based transactions among users and facilitate the exchange of goods, services, or public benefits. .png) Since ChromaWay’s blockchain tools are rooted in relational databases, the Chambers and partners (e.g., government agencies) could benefit from easier integration to existing applications. Blockchain nodes storing data could also be more easily queried for status of registration requests and the development of other value added services. As discussed with the Chambers, the innovation of blockchain technologies is the ability to connect enterprises and citizens in a decentralized, transparent, and secure way. This will result in reducing the cost of “trust” and of complex systems integration, and enable the redeployment of resources to new and growth-oriented business activities. As part of the next phase of the project, the consortium will also have the opportunity to offer Colombia’s growing tech community to participate in the initiative by building distributed applications (Dapps) on top of ChromaWay public blockchain, Chromia. https://chromia.com https://minesofdalarnia.com https://twitter.com/teamchromia https://www.reddit.com/r/Teamchromia https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_FvcRzwoZUmc60fYFj.. https://www.instagram.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://www.linkedin.com/company/chromia https://www.facebook.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://t.me/ChromiaRu |

| title | Feature highlight: Blockchain Dependencies |
| body | March 19, 2020 Rell 0.8 was a major milestone in the development of Rell. It was released a while ago now, but it introduced new features which are instrumental to Chromia's architecture, and some conveniences which developers have come to expect from modern programming languages. Here we go into a little more depth about one such feature: blockchain dependencies. Blockchain feature: external keyword allows a blockchain to read data from other blockchains. Many of Chromia's features stem from an ability to create as many blockchains as needed -- e.g. at least one blockchain per application. But having multiple blockchains completely isolated from each other is not useful. How can we allow multiple blockchains to interoperate and "talk" with each other? Chromia actually implements several different mechanisms for blockchain interoperation, which are designed for different uses. One of these mechanisms is blockchain dependencies: blockchain A can depend on blockchain B, which allows it to read data directly from B provided that they both reside on the same node. This mechanism is built directly into Rell syntax and runtime. In code, blockchain dependencies are introduced using the external keyword: external "user_registry" { class user (log) { key name; } } This declaration would allow an application to read data from user class of user_registry blockchain. The unique identifier of a blockchain will be provided in the application blockchain configuration. Data from other blockchains can be read at any time with no performance penalties, but there are some limitations to maintain determinism and consensus: only immutable data can be read. That is to say, only data from classes with log annotations which make them append-only, and immutable within the constraints of the system. Internally, Rell and Postchain make sure that these reads are fully deterministic. A block header commits to block identifiers of its dependencies, thus giving the runtime the ability to restrict retrieved data, and making sure that all nodes processing a block now or in future will see the same data. The blockchain dependency mechanism is the most efficient way to share data between blockchains as it adds no runtime or storage overhead. However, it requires a blockchain and its dependencies to be co-hosted on a node. If every blockchain depended on every other blockchain, it would be no better than a monolithic blockchain as all nodes would have to bear the burden of running all blockchains. For this reason, dependencies are mainly used for reading data from system blockchains. Since every node will have a replica of the system blockchains, this dependency adds no additional burden. Dependencies are also useful when a single blockchain, perhaps acting as a hub of some sort, contains data used by many others. The main motivation for blockchain dependencies is to enable cross-chain transaction validation to be coded in Rell. When a blockchain validates a cross-chain transaction, it receives a list of signatures from block producers. It somehow needs to know whether those are actual block producers of blockchain this transaction presumably comes from. Additionally, we might only accept transfers from blocks which are already anchored. We can solve both problems via blockchain dependencies: a blockchain can read from directory blockchain to get a list of actual block producers at certain height. And it can read from anchoring chain to find if block is anchored. So this whole validation thing becomes just a couple of lines of code. Implementing validation in Rell makes it more flexible. For example, if an application interacts with private blockchains, it can simply implement custom validation code for them. So it's easy to combine two validation modes (Chromia and private). We might also use blockchain dependencies for other things within the hierarchy of "system" blockchain. It is unlikely that we will allow app chains to depend on other app chains in our MVP releases -- this can be easily abused. But potentially it can lead to interesting architecture where you can take data from one blockchain and somehow extend it. https://chromia.com https://minesofdalarnia.com https://twitter.com/teamchromia https://www.reddit.com/r/Teamchromia https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_FvcRzwoZUmc60fYFj.. https://www.instagram.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://www.linkedin.com/company/chromia https://www.facebook.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://t.me/ChromiaRu |

| title | The case for Rell, a new blockchain language |
| body | Rell is a new language designed for blockchain programming. Many have asked us why a developer should take the time to get to know a new language when there are so many out there already. Wikipedia lists over 700 programming languages, does the world really need another one? This article is intended to answer that question. Relational blockchain development Photo by israel palacio / Unsplash Relational blockchain is all about leveraging a mature and optimized database technology to fix what's wrong with blockchain. Postchain and Chromia offload as much work as possible onto an RDMBS. A relational blockchain is a blockchain that uses the relational data model. This means that it supports a lot of features you won't be used to seeing in a blockchain platform: Complex queries Complex validation Minimal novel code Efficient execution Good developer UX Our initial assumption was that relational blockchains could closely follow existing best practices for app development: a backend with a SQL database and a frontend coded in some appropriate language, probably Javascript. Indeed it is entirely possible to develop complete decentralized applications (dapps) in this way. However, this model has some problems, and as we moved towards building dapps at ever greater scale, we found that they became more and more severe. The more "decentralized" the execution environment, the more critical the usability and security posture of the development tools. What's wrong with SQL + Javascript Photo by Jamie Street / Unsplash Firstly, the development process is quite cumbersome. A lack of static checking means that typos and syntax errors are not apparent without running tests, and that types of arguments can be ambiguous. A language with static checking gives immediate feedback if something is wrong, and precise information about the location and nature of the error. While in theory being able to use established languages is a blessing, in practice it can make things more complicated. In this case the need to load data to and from SQL makes application code more verbose, a problem that is avoided in a more tightly integrated language. All this is manageable in a centralized setting, but the increased risk of bugs and the burden of shipping patches is compounded in a distributed system. In short, these languages are not well adapted to the specific challenges of blockchain. We stress that "SQL+" is still a good option for private blockchain implementations in an enterprise setting. In this environment, the positives of using existing dev resources and easing integration with existing systems may well outweigh the negatives. For a public dapp platform like Chromia, we saw the need for a language that was safer, easier to use, and enforced the kind of constraints that are sensible if not critical when building distributed applications. It is that which led us to closely analyze what an ideal blockchain language might look like, then to try and identify an existing language we could use or adapt, and finally to develop Rell. There is no proper language for blockchain out there Rell is not a fork of an existing language, it is a new language. We made it because we looked for a language that met our needs and did not find one. These needs can be summarized as follows: Support for a combination of imperative constructs and database constructs. Basically database constructs are equivalent to SQL, and imperative constructs like variables, functions, loops are equivalent to a normal programming language. And you can use both. For example: for (prod in running_production@*{completion <= op_ctx.last_block_time}) { process_production_completion(prod); } Here we execute a query running_production@*{completion <= op_ctx.last_block_time} to retrieve productions which are complete and then use an imperative constructs (for and function call) to deal with retrieved objects. This is similar to PL/SQL in principle, but with better syntax and a better type system. A runtime which is good for blockchain. Working with blockchain requires deterministic operations which can't access anything outside of what they are meant to access, and that can't exceed their memory and computation allowance. Existing programming languages typically have large runtime libraries which includes lots of stuff. Most of that stuff is going to be unnecessary or harmful. If we make a custom runtime we can easily satisfy these properties by not including anything which is non-deterministic or which has potentially dangerous access permissions. We can also more easily control resource use. Persistence libraries which work in a decentralized context. A typical programming language runtime also includes file I/O or database connection components which are also irrelevant and potentially dangerous. Rell is less complex Some worry that a new language adds complexity and places an unnecessary burden on programmers. There is a concern that that this will hurt adoption and the long term prospects of a platform dependent on it. We don't think this will be the case here. Rell is demonstrably simple and straightforward to learn. It shares a lot of concepts with modern languages with static type checking like Typescript, Swift, and Kotlin. If you have any familiarity with those you should be able to become proficient in a few days. For example, basic code like: val x = 5; val y = x + 10; works identically in Kotlin and Rell. There's also a lot of similarity in the collections library. Further, learning a new language is not necessarily harder than learning to do something new in a language you are already familiar with, especially if the new language is purpose built for the domain in question. For an experienced Javascript developer, the burden of learning Rell compares favourably with the burden of learning a new framework like React. Rell has native constructs which are specific to blockchain programming. This means that a good programmer can code something quite complex in Rell in just a few hours. The frontend components of your dapp will likely take orders of magnitude more time than your Rell backend. Getting started with Rell You can already try an early developer preview of Rell by following the instructions here. | title | Chromia meets players asking for more democratic games at BlizzCon |
| body | Chromia visited Blizzard Entertainment's conference, BlizzCon, for the first time and what an exciting occasion it was! The main hype was around the highly anticipated Diablo 4. Unfortunately, a lot of attention and focus was directed towards Blizzard's treatment of the Hearthstone player Ng “Blitzchung” Wai Chung for expressing his support for the Hong Kong protesters during a live stream, and Blizzard's handling of the subsequent PR fallout. Blizzard opened up the conference by publicly apologizing for their mistakes; however, many people were not happy with the apology, claiming it to be fake and hollow. BlizzCon by night There were many participants at BlizzCon who protested and expressed their support for Hong Kong, and we had the opportunity to chat with some of them. The protesters that we spoke with thought that it was negative that Blizzard has absolute control over their games and can do whatever they want and that they would prefer a more decentralized model with more transparency and democracy. They were excited when we told them about how Chromia's decentralized application hosting offers a solution to that problem, and were interested in following our project’s updates in the future. On Chromia, a game or any other application can truly be operated by and for its users. | body | The story of one special hackathon that might really change people’s lives. Some time ago people from Chromia met people from UniTech - a platform that allows people to foster inclusion in technology for future services and products. It is not limited to gender, rather it includes everything from race and nationality to personality and perspective. Long story short - we fell in love. We came to the hackathon unprepared for how much we were to get out of it. After UniTech's introduction, I started with my presentation. From both a developer and a personal perspective - I presented how and why I chose to work one day with blockchain and what brought me to this industry. I honestly shared with the crowd - it wasn’t the promise of wealth. It was hope, but for change. So I showed hyperinflation in Venezuela, refugee camps in Jordan and Haiti after the earthquake. All of those places could use blockchain to secure their money, lands and IDs. Technology that really helps people. Be part of the solution Our cooperation led us to be a part of this hackathon, with 32 participants who formed 6 teams. Teams that aren’t always seen in the tech world - led by people of every gender, race, nationality, religion and background. We always thought that diversity and inclusion is important, but this hackathon show us, that it is actually crucial. The group quickly picked up the basics of Rell, even though most of them weren’t developers. They prepared projects within three broad areas: cybersecurity, blockchain or their own project. Up to the moment I heard them presenting the topics, I didn’t know what they were going to present. But another Rell developer, Tobias Radeskog, and I walked around and helped to set up the environment, answer questions and just share the tech knowledge to everyone who was hungry for it. Message from Silicon Valley to Nordic companies On the second day of the hackathon, the place was visited by Arlan Hamilton - Founder and Managing Partner of Backstage Capital, a fund that is dedicated to minimizing funding disparities in tech by investing in high-potential founders who are people of color, women, and/or LGBT. That was also a very refreshing part of the whole event, where the star was a black, gay woman who raised herself from poverty to become an investor who fights for inclusion. And Arlan asked those who weren’t on this hackathon a valid question: “Important message to Sweden’s investors and VC’s. Why aren’t you here?” And that was true, among from many people that sponsor the event, Chromia was the only that was represented in people and actively supporting those bright minds who attended to the hackathon. We could brag in this moment that look at us, we were there! But no one can make a change alone and while Chromia provides platform, the world has to see the potential too! Ideas Ok, but let’s get back to business. Why we are so excited? On Sunday we saw projects which were improving the Swedish medical system to offer a doctor appointment and advice with immediate translation; a platform for newcomers to get to know people in their area which is a common problem in Sweden; a system for making a peer to peer/sharing community to send mail to places while travelling, often to places that don’t have access to the post office; a platform for bringing tech skills to newcomers, and finally, the winners: Moneycircle - Accelerating financial inclusion through digital technology. Creating a space with payments and loans for people that can’t prove their credit score since the places in the world were it’s hard to operate with contracts or bank accounts, having only a cash exchange. Prevent Environmental Waste (PEW) - Changing people’s behaviour to care more for the environment. Creating a system that teaches and rewards for recycling by lowering the electricity bill. The idea was created for India, but can be easily implemented in any place in the world. We are so proud to say that after around 50 hours of almost non-stop work over a weekend, the team presented a working prototype written in Rell! Thank you It was one of the events we will cherish the memory of. We are thankful for the opportunity we have got to share our knowledge with those bright minds who came back with such great, world-changing ideas. That’s why Chromia rewarded winning teams with a grant of 10 000 SEK and mentorship through the process to get those idea running on Chromia. Also other teams are welcome to pitch their ideas and they can count on our help with making their ideas happen. I’m going to repeat myself and say thank you to UniTech, because: We always thought that diversity and inclusion is important, but this hackathon shows us that it is actually crucial. https://chromia.com https://twitter.com/teamchromia https://www.reddit.com/r/Teamchromia https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_FvcRzwoZUmc60fYFj.. https://www.instagram.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://www.linkedin.com/company/chromia https://www.facebook.com/teamchromia https://t.me/hellochromia https://t.me/ChromiaRu |

| title | Chromia acquires Antler Interactive, sustains investment in blockchain gaming |
| body | Chromia can bring decentralized applications to the mainstream. Relational blockchain offers a robust platform to build on, sidechains support scale, and a pragmatic governance model enables sustained and sustainable growth. We all know that superior technology is not enough. A platform requires so much more to be successful. From the first early version of our white paper, in which we laid out our plans for Chromia, we described a gaming-first approach to building Chromia from a promise into a self-sustaining ecosystem. This approach is built around several pillars: Internal development of games and ecosystem elements Fostering community efforts and enthusiast engagement Strategic business investment in gaming In this article I will summarize the work that ChromaWay has been doing in gaming over the past months, and introduce our latest initiative. We have just closed a deal to acquire the industry leading XR and blockchain games development studio Antler Interactive. They are based in Stockholm, and we have been following their work with interest for some time. Now we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring their talented team into the ChromaWay family, and work more closely than ever with them to bring the next generation of blockchain games to market. Strategic acquisition of Antler Interactive First, our most exciting news. ChromaWay's acquisition of Antler Interactive. Antler Interactive was founded in 2016 as SVRVIVE Studios. They boast a uniquely skilled team (who you can read about on antlerinteractive.com) with a wealth of experience in building games using cutting edge technologies. They specialise in AR/VR ("XR"), and blockchain, and have a number of successful titles under their belts, like Reef AR, SVRVIVE: the Deus Helix, and Krystal Kart. Their work is predicated on the idea that to stay ahead in gaming you need to embrace next generation technologies, and combine them with strong IPs and game building fundamentals. Blockchain gaming Antler's Krystal Kart is their first foray into blockchain gaming, and is available to download for free from App Store and Google Play Store. The game combined racing on fast looping Augmented Reality tracks and blockchain collectibles integrated with CryptoKitties. In Krystal Kart for Android, CryptoKitties owners could receive a free “kitty kart” based on the “cattributes” of their respective cats. Antler Interactive was the first studio in the world to combine AR racing with blockchain assets. Now they will be stepping up their blockchain games using the Chromia platform. Read more about Chromia as a platform for gaming here. Antler are close neighbours to us, and we have been in contact for some time. They will remain an independent, tight-knit team doing what they do best, and we will support them and give them what they need to do great things on Chromia. A win-win situation in which they get a blockchain platform that doesn't restrict their vision, and we get world class games that show off the very best that can be done with Chromia. ChromaWay games This acquisition is the latest step in a sustained strategy of investment in gaming. Over the past year, the ChromaWay team has been testing and refining game prototypes as part of the Chromia development process. For example, building Chess on Chromia gave us the chance to work with simple 2D matrices and to play with win condition testing. Battleships and Poker were a test bed for commit reveal encryption. Tic Tac Toe allowed us to show how easily a simple game can be brought from idea to reality, and has been used for numerous workshops and live coding exercises around the world. We were even flattered to see that the Lisk team reproduced our Tic Tac Toe app on their own platform. To produce games with real originality and character, we needed a dose of game development muscle that we did not have in house. So six months ago we invested in a collaboration with Workinman Interactive. Together with them we have been building towards the release of our own original title showcasing innovative blockchain game mechanics made possible with Chromia. Mines of Dalarnia will likely enter open release Q1 2020, and will feature strong economic elements and p2p marketplaces for digital collectables and tokenised in game assets. Collaborating with a powerhouse like Workinman has been a terrific experience for us, and we have benefited enormously from their experience, creativity, and professionalism. Building out the ecosystem Mines of Dalarnia has its own token, which is used for buying and selling game areas on which to mine, and serves as a general medium of exchange within the game. The needs of the game, as discussed in collaboration with Workinman, refined our token library, Flexible Tokens or FT3 for short. For example, we needed a way to smooth and moderate the CHR/Dalarnia token exchange rate, to protect our player base from the wild volatility of crypto markets and to support an enjoyable market experience even at smaller scale. This was an opportunity for our CTO to put his previous academic work around stable coins to good use, and add a token bonding curve algorithm which allows players to buy and sell CHR for Dalarnia tokens and vice versa - without an exchange or centralized price definition. Unique digital assets, or "non-fungible tokens" (NFTs) as they are often referred to, will also feature in Mines of Dalarnia. We developed a standard for use within Chromia, and made a simple game for testing it which we called Planetary. Planetary allowed players to collect assets like belts and sunglasses and outfit their "planet" characters with them. This element of composability, in which digital assets can be grouped or collected in logical constructions, is a significant step forward from how NFTs are handled in - for example - Ethereum. Planetary was deployed and tested at scale by our alpha testing group, and also by attendees at San Francisco blockchain week. These elements are reusable standards or libraries which will be open and usable by anyone who wants to build games on Chromia. Indeed, they are also useful in non-gaming applications. We believe that this kind of investment in ecosystem assets will create a snowball effect, building our ecosystem at an exponential rate. We have some evidence of this already, as a pair of enterprising developers came to us with a C# client for Chromia, meaning that it is now possible to develop games using the extremely popular Unity 3D game engine. They are working on an autochess style game using this client, which is also open source and available for reuse. We are hugely excited about our acquisition of Antler, and all of the other work we are doing to make Chromia the go to platform for blockchain gaming and beyond. "title": "Chromia acquires Antler Interactive, sustains investment in blockchain gaming",
"body": "\n\nChromia can bring decentralized applications to the mainstream. This approach is built around several pillars:\n\nInternal development of games and ecosystem elements\n\nFostering community efforts and enthusiast engagement\n\nStrategic business investment in gaming\n\nIn this article I will summarize the work that ChromaWay has been doing in gaming over the past months, and introduce our latest initiative. We have just closed a deal to acquire the industry leading XR and blockchain games development studio Antler Interactive. They are based in Stockholm, and we have been following their work with interest for some time. Now we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring their talented team into the ChromaWay family, and work more closely than ever with them to bring the next generation of blockchain games to market.\n\nStrategic acquisition of Antler Interactive\n\nFirst, our most exciting news. ChromaWay's acquisition of Antler Interactive. Antler Interactive was founded in 2016 as SVRVIVE Studios. They boast a uniquely skilled team (who you can read about on antlerinteractive.com) with a wealth of experience in building games using cutting edge technologies. They specialise in AR/VR (\"XR\"), and blockchain, and have a number of successful titles under their belts, like Reef AR, SVRVIVE: the Deus Helix, and Krystal Kart. Their work is predicated on the idea that to stay ahead in gaming you need to embrace next generation technologies, and combine them with strong IPs and game building fundamentals.\n\nBlockchain gaming\n\n\n\n\nAntler's Krystal Kart is their first foray into blockchain gaming, and is available to download for free from App Store and Google Play Store. Read more about Chromia as a platform for gaming here.\n\nAntler are close neighbours to us, and we have been in contact for some time. They will remain an independent, tight-knit team doing what they do best, and we will support them and give them what they need to do great things on Chromia. A win-win situation in which they get a blockchain platform that doesn't restrict their vision, and we get world class games that show off the very best that can be done with Chromia.\n\nChromaWay games\n\nThis acquisition is the latest step in a sustained strategy of investment in gaming. We were even flattered to see that the Lisk team reproduced our Tic Tac Toe app on their own platform.\n\nTo produce games with real originality and character, we needed a dose of game development muscle that we did not have in house. Collaborating with a powerhouse like Workinman has been a terrific experience for us, and we have benefited enormously from their experience, creativity, and professionalism.\n\nBuilding out the ecosystem\n\nMines of Dalarnia has its own token, which is used for buying and selling game areas on which to mine, and serves as a general medium of exchange within the game.
