Economic Development has been a buzz phrase ever since the great recession and even more of buzz phrase since \"The Donald\" has taken office and is promising to make america great again through industry.  The massive layoffs of jobs and economic crash made economic development for the first time, very popular.  The first question I get when I tell people that I am in Economic Development is, \"whats that? \" Which in all honesty is not that easy of an answer.\n\nOver the next few weeks I will be posting a series on \"Economic Development Explained\" and dive deeper into what the industry is really about and how it really works.\n\nThe first thing to know, is that economic development is NOT Economics.  Nothing to do with it.  I an not an economist and I would shoot myself in the head if had to do that stuff.  Your typical economic developer is in fact someone that happened into the profession.  I myself started out as a graphic designer turned casino manager turned economic developer.  We come from all walks of life to do what we do and in many cases, the more diverse the background, the better the job you can do.\n\n**SO WHAT IS IT ALREADY?!**\n\n**_PART I:  Economic Development Simplified_**\n\nLets jump in.  Here is a typical info graphic you might see if you google Economic Development.  \n\n![ED formula.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSgr5T3pXuFnb1VnhVvZGb1vx9oT6vwR7SiNLJ24v1BCV/ED%20formula.jpg)\n\nThis graphic shows you that its a combination of land (by acquisition, or development), Labor (job creation) and capital investment create economic development.  This is the textbook definition of economic development and while on the surface it is accurate, it only represents about one-third of what economic development really is.  \n\nThere are multiple levels of economic development, which we will explore, but think of economic development like fuel and oil in an engine.  We seek out the fuel that keeps an engine running and once we have the engine running, we act as oil to keep it running smooth.  And that engine is, depending on the level you work at, the Nation, the state you live in, the region you live in, down to the city you call home.\n\nEconomic Development is broken down into 4 different catagories\n1. Federal Development\n2. State Economic Development\n3. Regional/ Metro Economic Development\n4. Local/ City Economic Development\n\nIn each of the 4 levels of economic development, you will see a different focus on what is important but they all share the common goal of creating a better quality of life and stronger economy.   Vague I know, but we will dive deeper into what that means later.  \n\nBack to the diagram, the investment of capital to acquire land to create jobs is the **FUEL** that economic developers create to boost the economy.  The **OIL** is the aftercare and the assistance that economic developers provide on the back end to existing industry to help them grow and expand.  A whole other world that we will go through as well.\n\nSo in other term, economic development is the sales and support system for an economy.  We seek to sell our product, USA or  STATE OF VIRGINIA or LANDOUN COUNTY or CITY OF ARLINGTON (for example) for investment from corporate america or foreign direct investment, to increase corporate property tax revenue, to create jobs, to give people income, to use that income in our local economy.  \n\nThe economic developers then SUPPORT that business in different capacities to make sure that they remain an economic engine and grow to repeat the process all over again.  Support comes in many different forms.  Whether its workforce assistance programs to hep the business to find quality workforce or training program to community outreach to help relocated or new employees get acclimated into the community, we provide many different assistance programs to businesses. \n\n**THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CYCLE**  ![ED Cycle.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf85cCBSjbq4TPL74zusFCxi89SpuCkkicZBtSA6RKUeS/ED%20Cycle.png)\n\nWHEW! Economic Development has been a buzz phrase ever since the great recession and even more of buzz phrase since \"The Donald\" has taken office and is promising to make america great again through industry.  The massive layoffs of jobs and economic crash made economic development for the first time, very popular.  The first question I get when I tell people that I am in Economic Development is, \"whats that? \" Which in all honesty is not that easy of an answer.\n\nOver the next few weeks I will be posting a series on \"Economic Development Explained\" and dive deeper into what the industry is really about and how it really works.\n\nThe first thing to know, is that economic development is NOT Economics.  Nothing to do with it.  I an not an economist and I would shoot myself in the head if had to do that stuff.  Your typical economic developer is in fact someone that happened into the profession.  I myself started out as a graphic designer turned casino manager turned economic developer.  We come from all walks of life to do what we do and in many cases, the more diverse the background, the better the job you can do.\n\n**SO WHAT IS IT ALREADY?!**\n\n**_PART I:  Economic Development Simplified_**\n\nLets jump in. This is the textbook definition of economic development and while on the surface it is accurate, it only represents about one-third of what economic development really is.  \n\nThere are multiple levels of economic development, which we will explore, but think of economic development like fuel and oil in an engine.  We seek out the fuel that keeps an engine running and once we have the engine running, we act as oil to keep it running smooth.  And that engine is, depending on the level you work at, the Nation, the state you live in, the region you live in, down to the city you call home.\n\nEconomic Development is broken down into 4 different catagories\n1. Federal Development\n2. State Economic Development\n3. Regional/ Metro Economic Development\n4. Local/ City Economic Development\n\nIn each of the 4 levels of economic development, you will see a different focus on what is important but they all share the common goal of creating a better quality of life and stronger economy.   Vague I know, but we will dive deeper into what that means later.  \n\nBack to the diagram, the investment of capital to acquire land to create jobs is the **FUEL** that economic developers create to boost the economy.  The **OIL** is the aftercare and the assistance that economic developers provide on the back end to existing industry to help them grow and expand.  A whole other world that we will go through as well.\n\nSo in other term, economic development is the sales and support system for an economy.  We seek to sell our product, USA or  STATE OF VIRGINIA or LANDOUN COUNTY or CITY OF ARLINGTON (for example) for investment from corporate america or foreign direct investment, to increase corporate property tax revenue, to create jobs, to give people income, to use that income in our local economy.  \n\nThe economic developers then SUPPORT that business in different capacities to make sure that they remain an economic engine and grow to repeat the process all over again.  Support comes in many different forms. Apparently that is a car for a 6 year old girl.  But hey!  I love Italy.  No judgement here.  People in general these days take themselves WAY too seriously.  I try to stick to the lighter side of life.  That is not to say that I wont frequently had a heated discussion on on Entropy or why the music was so dang loud in the movie Interstellar, or perhaps why Kale is a thing these past few years.  Its not a NEW plant that was just discovered.  Same as Sriracha.  Is it me or did it taste so much better BEFORE it was $6 a bottle.\n\nAnyway, I have never been much of a social media person,   but I have been doodling in the Cryptocurrency world lately and I really like the Steem platform. I recently watched this documentary \"The Farthest\"  the story of NASA launching Voyager I and II to take the first ever recorded pictures of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus (heehee) and Neptune.  \n\nI know it hurts, but think back to science class as a kid.  Forget photosynthesis, the scientific method and bunson burners, what was it that really captivated our attention and still does to this day, OUTER FLIPPIN SPACE!  I loved it!  Who of us honestly still to this day does not want to go to the moon.  Come on Elon Musk!  Were all waiting!!\n\nSo anyway, I totally forgot about Voyager!  The team of scientist at NASA that put this little gem together were amazing.  Think about this.  Voyager 1 was launched September 5, 1977.  That 41 years ago.  The internet was not around and the technology they used was basically a high end DSLR camera mounted on a rocket fueled by a plutonium reactor.  We basically sent a nuke with a camera to space to take pictures.  Err..Im off topic.\n\nSo this team sent out two probes into space to take the first ever recorded pictures of the planets.  BUT, Voyager 1 had to travel 2 years before it reached Jupiter its first stop and didn't reach Neptune till 1989, 12 years later!  Who of us can even fathom the waiting time of working on a project for 12 years. In fact, here is the first random thought that just popped up.  I cant even stay on topic for an introduction paragraph.\n\nReading:  Do it.  One of the best bosses I have ever had, we will call him \"Bob\", well because his actual name is Bob, asked me what the last book I read was.  Honestly, I could not think of the last book I read and I'm pretty sure that comic books were not an acceptable answer.  Yes, I read comic books.  I am an enigma of things that you wouldn't think I am!  But back to Bob.   I simply told him that in all honesty, I could not remember.  Well that was probably a worse answer than comic books.  He told me and I quote \n\n**_\"Anybody that knows how to read and does not, well that a shame.\"_**  \n                                                           **_- Bob my boss_**\n\nComing from your boss, especially one that you admire, that is not music to your ears.  So I did what any normal person would do.  I downloaded Audible and started to \"read\".  Now before you judge, I have a 45 minute commute into the office.   That is the perfect \"reading\" time for me.  So now i am on a one-book-a-month reading schedule.  Not to mention the monthly book all the the directors have to read, as assigned by Bob, now before each management meeting here at my job.   Strange this started after our conversation with a box full of leadership books Bob brought for all of us. Honestly, I could not think of the last book I read and I'm pretty sure that comic books were not an acceptable answer.  Yes, I read comic books.  I am an enigma of things that you wouldn't think I am!  But back to Bob.   I simply told him that in all honesty, I could not remember.  Well that was probably a worse answer than comic books.  He told me and I quote \n\n               \"Anybody that knows how to read and does not, well that a shame.\"  \n                                                            - Bob my boss\n\nComing from your boss, especially one that you admire, that is not music to your ears.  So I did what any normal person would do.  I downloaded Audible and started to \"read\".  Now before you judge, I have a 45 minute commute into the office.   That is the perfect \"reading\" time for me.  So now i am on a one-book-a-month reading schedule.  Not to mention the monthly book all the the directors have to read, as assigned by Bob, now before each management meeting here at my job.   Strange this started after our conversation with a box full of leadership books Bob brought for all of us.  I take no fault for this.\n\nYeah, so anyway, complete randomness, check back for ramblings on other stuff that pops up.",

I wont have deep conversations on intricate topics or provide expert advice on my field of study to which i hope to in your affections and admiration.  Instead, I might tell you my thoughts on the latest \"THING\" I saw at the store, the best book I have read recently (and yes, I DO read).
