| body | My family read **Aru Shah and the End of Time** by Roshani Chokshi, the first book in a new-ish series about Hindu mythology from the Rick Riordan presents imprint. For those who aren't familiar with Rick Riordan, he writes the enormously popular Percy Jackson series about a boy who discovers he is the son of Poseidon. Riordan has also written books incorporating Roman, Norse, and Egyptian mythology. We've read several of his books and they are fun, full of adventure and snarky but lovable characters. The books published by his imprint take on the mythology of other cultures written by authors from those cultures. **Aru Shah and the End of Time,** follows the Riordan formula-- a snarky teen discovers she is descended from mythological gods and must go on a quest to save the world. This book skews a little younger than the Percy Jackson books, with it's 12 year old heroines, Aru & Mini being joined by a talking parrot, a particularly Disney-esque touch. I enjoyed learning a bit of Hindu mythology and I especially liked that the girls in this book act like average 12 year old girls and still get to save the day. It's a nice message that even if you seem unremarkable you can find your inner Pandava and beat the bad guy. That said, I often felt like the heroines were just jumping from one battle to the next and the characters never quite felt solid. In general, my family's reaction to this book was "meh," except for my husband who couldn't even get through it. He is not a fan of fantasy in general and found the magical elements too ridiculous. There is an enchanted ping-pong ball, a magical Costco and a herd of talking animals. The book ended with a lot of unanswered questions, but none of us were interested in reading the rest of the series to find out the answers. Appropriately, we held our book discussion at our favorite Indian restaurant and talked about how Aru and Mini dealt with feelings of insecurity, what it's like to be the children of immigrants, and the differences/similarities between Greek and Hindu mythology. |

It started with personal computers and smartphone advancement. Today we don't really notice how these technology greatly affect us. In a similar way that's how AI will progress. At its peak, we didn't realize what was happening about decades ago up until the present. |

| body | This past summer we decided to start up a family book club. My boys were excited about sharing their favorite books with us, my husband thought it was a good way to get them to read some non-fiction and I was happy for a chance to work on critical reading skills over the school break. Plus, we agreed that discussions would take place at the local frozen yogurt shop, so that kept everyone motivated. My 7 year old chose **The BFG** by Roald Dahl as our first book. It's the story of a little girl who spies a giant out her window and is then carried off by him to Giant Country. Lucky for her, she is taken by the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), the one giant who spends his nights blowing good dreams into the minds children instead of gobbling them up. Unlike his brothers, the BFG would rather eat disgusting snozzcumbers than tasty human beans. Sophie and the BFG hatch a plan to team up with the Queen of England and stop those nasty, hungry, giants once and for all. I read and loved this book as a child, and my kids love it now, but I have to admit that I found reading it as an adult a bit tedious. The book is rather light on story and heavy on puns and silliness. The BFG loves to drink "frobscottle" where the bubbles go down and you can only imagine where that end up... (yep-- fart jokes, or, as they're known in Giant Country, "whizzpoppers"). It did, however, make for a good family book club discussion. We discussed why the author used so many funny words, how Sophie & the BFG were friends, the ethics of eating living things and whether the other giants were fairly or unfairly punished. The BFG might have been a silly book, but it engaged my family in discussing some fairly mature ideas. |

| body | Last summer my husband took me and our kids to a presentation on Deep Learning and Neural Networks. He thought it would be fun for us. Yep, that’s what he said. Needless to say, 90% of the presentation was over our heads, although the boys did get a good hour of play time on my iphone, so I guess that was a little fun for them. But, now that I’ve read Max Tegmark’s **Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence**, I actually understand what the scientists were presenting. And it’s truly fascinating. https://www.diplomaticourier.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Life-3.0-book-cover.jpg Tegmark begins the book with a brief overview of the current state of AI, which is relatively narrow, limited to playing chess or driving cars, but he soon makes the argument that broader, human level AI is possible and probable. Neural networks learn by re-arranging themselves to get better at tasks, and they are improving quickly. That means soon we may have robo-judges or AI generated films or, more frightening, intelligent weapons. We may even be able to copy our mind into a neural network enabling a whole new virtual era of living. Imagine every Black Mirror episode you’ve ever seen becoming reality. If that scares you, read on, because Tegmark’s main purpose in writing is to urge us to plan for an AI enabled utopia, rather than the dystopias we commonly find on TV. So in addition to making sure AI systems are free of bugs and bad assumptions, that they can’t be hacked and that humans can intervene as needed we also need to prepare for an overhaul of our society. How do we fairly distribute resources in a low employment society? Who has control over setting the AI’s goals and how do we ensure the AI retains the goals we have set? If we can colonize the universe by transferring our consciousness to machines, should we bother with organic bodies? Would such machines truly be conscious or would they simply be zombies acting as if they were conscious? He explores many possible futures for human beings and asks us to consider if they are desireable. Tegmark leans towards the belief that human-level AI and possibly super-intelligent AI will be part of our futures, but maintains that we have the power to influence how it gets implemented. After several clear and thought-provoking chapters about the near-ish future of AI, Tegmark jumps forward millions of years into the future to explore the limits of AI and of life itself and this is where I felt he gets a bit off course. As a physicist he analyzes everything in terms of physics. There are lengthy discussions about the total number of particles in the universe and how many of them could be devoted to creating a super-intelligent AI. He goes into detail about Dyson Spheres and the possibility of using black holes to power a galaxy wide system. These tangents did not add much to his argument and frankly, I found them them hard to follow. In the final chapter, he circles back to the idea of consciousness, which he defines broadly as “having subjective experiences.” He eloquently makes the case that consciousness is what ultimately gives meaning to our universe. Without us to add beauty and love and life, it’s all just particles obeying the laws of physics. So, how do we know what lifeforms are conscious? And where exactly does consciousness reside? These are tricky questions and Tegmark’s greatest fear seems to be not that humans are replaced by AI (he argues that AI could simply be seen as our descendents) but that in our efforts to expand our environment we replace ourselves with something that fails to truly experience our world. This, he argues, may be the ultimate zombie apocalypse. So, what do you think? Have thought about how AI might change our lives? What do you think is likely to happen? |

| body | Recently someone described my profile picture as "the epitome of hygge." Huh? So, I did a little research on this Danish concept (pronounced hoo-gah) for coziness as a life philosophy and realized that I should probably just move to Denmark. I am really all about cozy. Books, coffee, blankets, sweaters, board game nights, pastries-- those are all my jam (served with jam- yum!). Even the negative aspects of Danish society which, according author Aksel Sandemoseto, include that “you are not to think you are special” and “you are not to think you are good at anything,” are already kind of my mantra, for better or for worse. In the US they recommend therapy for thinking this way, but sounds like in Denmark I’d fit right in. To learn a little more I picked up **The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well** by Meik Wiking. Essentially, it’s a Real Simple magazine article turned into a cute little book, a hyggebog if you will. Wiking details how to be cozy (hot drinks! candles! wool socks!) interspersed with data on happiness research, recipes and homey places to visit in Copenhagen. For people not up on the latest happiness research, Denmark consistently ranks among the happiest nations in the world. “How can this be?” wondered Wiking, given Denmark’s bad weather and high taxes? He does give some credit to the welfare state saying “We are not paying taxes, we are investing in our society. We are purchasing quality of life.” He notes that universal health care, free education and a well -functioning society all contribute to happiness, but that many of the Nordic countries share those features. What puts Denmark ahead of the rest? The answer is hygge. Most of the book is not so much about why to hygge, but how to hygge. Although the accoutrements of hygge-- the warm light, natural materials, soft blankets, books and coffee all factor in, the most important aspect of hygge is a comfort in togetherness. This translates to small groups, casual get togethers and communal activities. Things like potlucks, campouts and movie nights at home are preferable to nightclubs or big parties. Political discussions are saved for other times. According to Wiking’s research 3-4 people is the perfect sized group for a hygge gathering. I really connected to the idea that planning hygge gatherings is a way to make socializing more comfortable for introverts and a country that places a high value on hygge is a happier place for everyone. The book goes on to describe hygge gatherings for every sort of season, but concedes that nothing beats winter-time hygge. And it's almost winter in Los Angeles, meaning the weather finally dropped below 70 degrees. So I am putting on my wool socks, cooking up a pot of Skibberlabskovs and calling up a couple old friends for some Settlers of Catan. Time to get our hygge on. What do you think? Is the hygge hype in the US just a way for stores to sell more candles or can this concept really increase our happiness? |
