| body |

**"Tyranny is the deliberate removal of nuance." - Albert Maysles**
--- As a documentary filmmaker known for honest and unscripted work during the 1960s and 1970s, it is unsurprising that A.Maysles would be a proponent of disclosure and an advocate for unvarnished complexity. Coming from that background, it is also perhaps not surprising that he is also a man with some insights on the nature of tyranny and its practices. I think many people in today's upsetting and unsettling world look back on that period with the thought that its turmoil may prove to hold useful lessons for us moving forward. --- As an artist and free thinker, I am particularly sensitive to the shadows of tyranny and I seek always to defend us from its looming threat. It seems to be an affliction that sneaks up on mankind time and again; easy to impose, and often bloody and destructive to depose. As I watch the actions of societies of our time, I grow concerned for the secretive ways tyrants use to suggest their implementation, and I find this phrase a powerful summation of that which is to be avoided at its heart. --- Tyranny and nuance would seem at first to be unrelated. That is, I feel, the most profound sentiment that underlies this thought. And yet, upon closer inspection, I feel that the two are inextricably linked. **What is nuance?** Nuance, simply stated, is the particulars of circumstance; the mitigating factors. It is also the aspects of a proposed "solution" that lead to unintended consequences. Most importantly, Nuance is the difference between the idealized "bumper sticker" or "rally slogan" and the reality that is the Actual Impact of an imposed decision on the ground. In effect, the Nuance lies in the ability to explain; in the opportunity to bend rules for the sake of actual proper actions instead of practical failures due to an unwillingness to compromise. --- **And tyranny?** Tyranny is this insistence to accept failures and folly for no other reason than the idea that a certain action, thought, or value MUST be Imposed. Tyranny, in essence, IS the crushing fist that comes down on the good and kind simply because its own opinions say it is to be so. Moreover, Tyranny reacts to such events Not by listening to, understanding, and adapting to fix these particular situations, but by Insisting on Denying the particulars because of their own belief that the over-arching framework is itself flawless. --- This is the very Core of the Heart of the Tyrant; this unwillingness to listen and adapt. The tyrant refuses to see the world and their people as complex and unique people in unique circumstances facing singularly difficult decisions. To them, the world is simple because of their own refusal to accept it as Not So. --- As we move forward, I think we need to be vigilant for this tendency to over-simplify and catagorize Not only because it is a flawed method of achieving the best possible outcomes, but more importantly because: **We have No Right to Dictate the specifics of situations to which we have no knowledge.** And the Responsibility to Learn, to Listen, to Care Lies upon Anyone who seeks to sit in Judgement. "body": "

\n\n
**\"Tyranny is the deliberate removal of nuance.\" - Albert Maysles**
\n\n---\n\nAs a documentary filmmaker known for honest and unscripted work during the 1960s and 1970s, it is unsurprising that A.Maysles would be a proponent of disclosure and an advocate for unvarnished complexity.\n\nComing from that background, it is also perhaps not surprising that he is also a man with some insights on the nature of tyranny and its practices.\n\nI think many people in today's upsetting and unsettling world look back on that period with the thought that its turmoil may prove to hold useful lessons for us moving forward.\n\n---\n\nAs an artist and free thinker, I am particularly sensitive to the shadows of tyranny and I seek always to defend us from its looming threat. It seems to be an affliction that sneaks up on mankind time and again; easy to impose, and often bloody and destructive to depose.\n\nAs I watch the actions of societies of our time, I grow concerned for the secretive ways tyrants use to suggest their implementation, and I find this phrase a powerful summation of that which is to be avoided at its heart.\n\n---\n\nTyranny and nuance would seem at first to be unrelated. That is, I feel, the most profound sentiment that underlies this thought. And yet, upon closer inspection, I feel that the two are inextricably linked.\n\n**What is nuance?**\n\nNuance, simply stated, is the particulars of circumstance; the mitigating factors.\nIt is also the aspects of a proposed \"solution\" that lead to unintended consequences.\n\nMost importantly, Nuance is the difference between the idealized \"bumper sticker\" or \"rally slogan\" and the reality that is the Actual Impact of an imposed decision on the ground.\n\nIn effect, the Nuance lies in the ability to explain; in the opportunity to bend rules for the sake of actual proper actions instead of practical failures due to an unwillingness to compromise.\n\n---\n\n**And tyranny?**\n\nTyranny is this insistence to accept failures and folly for no other reason than the idea that a certain action, thought, or value MUST be Imposed.\n\nTyranny, in essence, IS the crushing fist that comes down on the good and kind simply because its own opinions say it is to be so.\n\nMoreover, Tyranny reacts to such events Not by listening to, understanding, and adapting to fix these particular situations, but by Insisting on Denying the particulars because of their own belief that the over-arching framework is itself flawless.\n\n---\n\nThis is the very Core of the Heart of the Tyrant; this unwillingness to listen and adapt.\n\nThe tyrant refuses to see the world and their people as complex and unique people in unique circumstances facing singularly difficult decisions.\n\nTo them, the world is simple because of their own refusal to accept it as Not So.\n\n---\n\nAs we move forward, I think we need to be vigilant for this tendency to over-simplify and catagorize Not only because it is a flawed method of achieving the best possible outcomes, but more importantly because:\n\n**We have No Right to Dictate the specifics of situations to which we have no knowledge.**\n\nAnd the Responsibility to Learn, to Listen, to Care Lies upon Anyone who seeks to sit in Judgement.\nLest we find ourselves overridden and disregarded in our time as well...\n\n@bokettoshiyou",

| body |
**Cleaning Pure Silver With Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil**

Silver is a Remarkable metal. A better electrical conductor than Copper, it has been prized for millennia. While it's surface is remarkably resistant to the growth of bacteria, thus the benefit of the fabled 'silver spoon', it is notorious for its tendency to tarnish over time. Tarnishing is a chemical reaction in the case of silver where the atoms react with sulfur compounds in the air and form a blackish substance something akin to rust.

**This is my Pure Silver Torc. Quite in need of a cleaning!**
The need for silver to be constantly polished to maintain a shine has been long noted. Indeed, one of the most important privileges of the job of head butler in the past was to have access to the family's collection of silver, and the job of keeping it well polished. This was among the primary reasons servants would wear gloves when handling food services; to avoid fingerprints and the tarnish that comes from being handled. Their many hours of toil with cloth and polish was not ideal for me, however, and I wanted to see what other methods I could find to clean my Torc. --- I happened upon a rather interesting method I decided to try involving Aluminum Foil, Baking soda, and boiling water. What could be easier? -Placing the aluminum foil in a pot of water -Adding a tablespoon of baking soda per liter of water -Bringing the water to a boil -Inserting the silver to be polished for 10 seconds -Removing with tongs and wiping clean Sounded fairly easy, and I was anxious to try! ---

**I added the water, baking soda, and foil to a large pan, and then put my Torc in when it began to boil.** ---

**Once in the water, there seemed to be a reaction. Whereas the water had simply boiled before, it now began to build a head of Froth!** ---

**Unlike normal boiling froth, this seemed a bit metallic in nature. It was hard to control despite adjusting the heat, and it SMELLED!** ---

**The bubbles seemed reluctant to pop normally, and the suds carried with then a nasty brown rust-like residue. I had to open the windows despite the cool temperatures.** ---

**Once I removed the silver, the reaction seemed to stop, and the froth died down, but the silver seemed less than gleaming despite the eruption...** ---

**Substantial rubbing with a cloth proved much of the remainder came away, and there was no doubt an improvement, but I decided another round was required.** ---

**Discarding the first batch of liquid, I made up a new one and brought it to a boil yet again.** ---

**While this one did not react as violently as the first, I was prepared for the mess this time and took things more slowly.** ---

**Noticing the difference some buffing had made, I thought the crevices of the Torc could use something more adept at cleaning cracks than a rag. So, I fetched an old toothbrush and proceeded to soak bits at a time while scrubbing as I went.** **It made for a far more controlled cleaning, and gave me time to go back over problem areas.** ---

**As a final measure, and to clean away all remaining residue, I used some old toothpaste (a nice gentle abrasive) to buff the outside of the metal and smooth away any remaining grit.** ---

**By the end, I could see quite an improvement! The grime had clearly loosened and come away. No doubt a regular cleaning would see even a stronger difference!** ---

**When cleaning things away this time, I noticed the tarnish that had apparently transferred to the aluminum foil. So That's where it had gone!** --- Ultimately, I think this is an interesting and effective method to clean silver... However, it is also a messy and smelly method in the event of heavily tarnished items. I had not seen or worn my Torc in several years and it would have been difficult to clean no matter what the method... But this was certainly a cheap, easy, and effective way to cut through the grime! I think, if you are aware of the potential messes, this can be an easy way to keep up with the task. I would especially recommend using this method on items that are irregular or oddly shaped as the water submersion allows for penetration into tight spaces. You will need to wipe down the object afterward though, so some sort of brush or rags will always be required. This method just cuts down on the Elbow Grease involved! TIP - Submerging items in sections also seems to be a good way of approaching larger jobs. It controls the reaction and allows you to see when areas will need more soak time. Cleanup, while more than I expected, was a simple task of paper towels, soap and water.

Well worth it!
@bokettoshiyou |

What could be easier?\n\n-Placing the aluminum foil in a pot of water\n-Adding a tablespoon of baking soda per liter of water\n-Bringing the water to a boil\n-Inserting the silver to be polished for 10 seconds\n-Removing with tongs and wiping clean\n\nSounded fairly easy, and I was anxious to try!\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**I added the water, baking soda, and foil to a large pan, and then put my Torc in when it began to boil.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**Once in the water, there seemed to be a reaction. Whereas the water had simply boiled before, it now began to build a head of Froth!**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**Unlike normal boiling froth, this seemed a bit metallic in nature. It was hard to control despite adjusting the heat, and it SMELLED!**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**The bubbles seemed reluctant to pop normally, and the suds carried with then a nasty brown rust-like residue. I had to open the windows despite the cool temperatures.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**Once I removed the silver, the reaction seemed to stop, and the froth died down, but the silver seemed less than gleaming despite the eruption...**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**Substantial rubbing with a cloth proved much of the remainder came away, and there was no doubt an improvement, but I decided another round was required.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**Discarding the first batch of liquid, I made up a new one and brought it to a boil yet again.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**While this one did not react as violently as the first, I was prepared for the mess this time and took things more slowly.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**Noticing the difference some buffing had made, I thought the crevices of the Torc could use something more adept at cleaning cracks than a rag. So, I fetched an old toothbrush and proceeded to soak bits at a time while scrubbing as I went.**\n\n**It made for a far more controlled cleaning, and gave me time to go back over problem areas.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**As a final measure, and to clean away all remaining residue, I used some old toothpaste (a nice gentle abrasive) to buff the outside of the metal and smooth away any remaining grit.**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**By the end, I could see quite an improvement! The grime had clearly loosened and come away. No doubt a regular cleaning would see even a stronger difference!**\n\n---\n\n

\n\n**When cleaning things away this time, I noticed the tarnish that had apparently transferred to the aluminum foil. So That's where it had gone!**\n\n---\n\nUltimately, I think this is an interesting and effective method to clean silver...\nHowever, it is also a messy and smelly method in the event of heavily tarnished items.\n\nI had not seen or worn my Torc in several years and it would have been difficult to clean no matter what the method... But this was certainly a cheap, easy, and effective way to cut through the grime!\n\nI think, if you are aware of the potential messes, this can be an easy way to keep up with the task.\n\nI would especially recommend using this method on items that are irregular or oddly shaped as the water submersion allows for penetration into tight spaces. You will need to wipe down the object afterward though, so some sort of brush or rags will always be required. This method just cuts down on the Elbow Grease involved!\n\nTIP - Submerging items in sections also seems to be a good way of approaching larger jobs. It controls the reaction and allows you to see when areas will need more soak time.\n\nCleanup, while more than I expected, was a simple task of paper towels, soap and water.\n\n\n

\n\n
Well worth it!
\n\n@bokettoshiyou",

| body |

As someone who has driven commercially for years, it dismays me to witness the confusion and panic of my fellow drivers when approaching this fairly common and rather simple intersection. For the sake of their peace of mind, and because better drivers make Everyone safer, I thought I'd take a moment to explain the few basic rules to keep in mind when confronting this crossing conundrum. ---

**Simple Rule Number 1:**
**First Come, First Serve.**
This basic guideline should cover 99% of your needs at a 4-way stop. If you haven't stopped On the Line yet, you need to. The person who has been stopped the longest, gets to go next. Plain and simple. --- Generally, that rule alone should be sufficient. The odds of meeting at a stop sign at Precisely the Same Moment are pretty hard to gauge, but we can say they are pretty rare. *Often times, I will delay my stop by a moment or two of creeping just to prevent this from happening. By waiting to stop until After the other person has stopped, you can forgo the difficulties of the rest of these rules and stick to the plain and simple rule One!!* --- If you do find yourself actually stopped at the same moment as someone else however, luckily only a few other rules apply. **Simple Rule Number 2:**
**If you're Stuck deciding when cars are Beside each other, RIGHT Beats LEFT.**
This means that if two cars are sitting at corners to each other, the one on the *Right* side gets to go before the *Left* side car does. Essentially, this means that cars go in a Clockwise Order. *This also applies when Three cars meet at the same time.* --- If two cars meet at exactly the same time Accross from each other, we get a different situation... **Simple Rule Number 3:**
**Between Cars Facing each other, STRAIGHT Beats TURNING and RIGHT Beats LEFT.**
So, any car going straight through the intersection goes first, then any car turning right, then any car turning left. Although, often times, - provided both cars are using their BLINKERS, it can be clear that both cars can go as they wish without impacting the other's movement. --- Finally, if you happen to actually meet at an intersectional 4-way stop with 3 other cars at Precisely the Same Moment where all 4 of you are unsure as to who has the right of way to proceed, it is traditional to decide by the following: **Simple Rule Number 4:**
**If All 4 cars meet at precisely the same moment:**
Each driver is to quickly put their cars into park, exit their vehicle, running Counter Clockwise, until they make a full circuit around their car while shouting **"I want a Pony!"** The First driver to successfully complete their run and enter their car, then has the right of way to proceed through the intersection first. Don't forget, *just because YOU Know, Doesn't mean Anyone ELSE Does!* **Drive safe!** @bokettoshiyou |

| body |

Jackson Pollock inspired piece. --- Among all styles of art, it could be argued that none is as divisive and ridiculed as the Abstract. Often, when touring a museum or gallery, it is among these artists' work that we are most likely to hear scoffs and derision. For the layman viewing some of the exhorbidant prices the best work of this category can bring, the very idea of paying for the work at all can seem a mystery.

"My Toddler could do a better job than that!" --- For those who strive to work in this difficult field, such statements are a curious dichotomy. On the one hand, the person making the statement may have No Idea what differentiates the work on the wall from the seemingly random splatter and scribble they imagine as commonplace, but their children may however understand the idea... And the struggle. Pablo Picasso Famously said: "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." --- The difference between that which has value and that which is disposable lies in the artist's ability to SAY SOMETHING with their work.

A classic by Piet Mondrian. --- All art attempts to convey an idea, a thought, a feeling, an emotion... And Most of them are reasonably easily understood. Indeed, many types of artistic work can be blatantly obvious with its messaging and emotional content. Religious iconography for example:

...makes it abundantly clear what sort of message is being presented. The images we create of conquerors and emperors:

Napoleon ...are full of symbolism and messaging. Even the ubiquitous Landscape:

Bob Ross ...is full of peacefulness, harmony, love of the earth, the purity of the natural world... And, yes, happy trees. --- What then do we make of the truly abstract?

Vasily Kandinsky I think, perhaps, the disgust we experience upon viewing such work (and I Love This One!) lies not in the complete Absence of any rhyme or reason, but upon the unavoidable suspicion that the work Does in fact Mean Something. That the artist Did in fact have their reasons, and that we simply do not understand them. This confusion can be upsetting. The already present sense of ignorance most layman experience when confronted with what they are told is "exceedingly Fine art" is only made blatantly obvious and insultingly unavoidable when viewing the work of abstract artists. I think it is this confusion and insecurity most that engenders the dislike most people experience when confronted with the truly abstract work. ---
So, in an effort to rectify this, let me proceed.
Abstract art, as I have said, is an attempt to Convey a meaning just as every other form of art. Funnily enough, a failure to understand that meaning is seen as just as painful for the Artist as it can be for a viewer. Imagine spending hours and hours of your life crafting a work in an attempt to evoke a meaning only to have your attempts judged completely inadequate. They too fear their work has no meaning. They too are haunted by the idea that their work falls short of that of a child's afternoon at play. They seek to Speak through their work - and know full well they may fail utterly. To work in pure abstraction is, in a worrying way, to choose to work in a form which you Deliberately Have NO Understanding beyond the instinctual. ---
And instinct is what it is all about.
Mankind has a need to find meaning in their surroundings. Humans have a desire to seek sense in their patterns, and our understanding can begin without any pre-established groundwork. Take this image for example:

It may be safe to say that this script is completely foreign and indecipherable to you, yet on some Instincutal level, you can Recognise it as Having MEANING. This on the other hand:

While Logistically similar, simply does not carry the same Instinctive Connotation. In the same way, I feel, the viewer can See the Attempt at Meaning in truly great abstract art. The artist seeking to write stories in languages neither they, nor their viewers understand. In this way also, Children understand the true meaning of the abstract. When the child puts color on the page, they may do so without a pre-established language of symbolism and codes, but they may yet seek to Convey a Message through their work - the shapes of their own Unique perception. In this way also, the artist struggles to abandon the tired tropes of their society and speak in pure meaning that goes beyond the ideas and shapes of others. --- Look at this work from ancient times from San Juan Del Oro, Bolivia:

A powerful work. To see it is to be filled with wonder. Who were the people who made it? What were they thinking? What did the shapes mean to them? Because, we can surely see the Desire to Embue a meaning.
Such is the human condition.
We seek to find order and meaning behind our world.

And we take joy in discovering new ways of seeing the world.

That is why we stare at the clouds in the sky... That is why we make our marks in the sand...
And that is why we put paint on canvass.

Jane Davies @bokettoshiyou |

And, yes, happy trees.\n\n---\n\nWhat then do we make of the truly abstract?\n\n

\nVasily Kandinsky\n\nI think, perhaps, the disgust we experience upon viewing such work (and I Love This One!) lies not in the complete Absence of any rhyme or reason, but upon the unavoidable suspicion that the work Does in fact Mean Something. That the artist Did in fact have their reasons, and that we simply do not understand them.\n\nThis confusion can be upsetting. The already present sense of ignorance most layman experience when confronted with what they are told is \"exceedingly Fine art\" is only made blatantly obvious and insultingly unavoidable when viewing the work of abstract artists.\n\nI think it is this confusion and insecurity most that engenders the dislike most people experience when confronted with the truly abstract work.\n\n---\n\n\n
So, in an effort to rectify this, let me proceed.
\n\nAbstract art, as I have said, is an attempt to Convey a meaning just as every other form of art. Funnily enough, a failure to understand that meaning is seen as just as painful for the Artist as it can be for a viewer.\n\nImagine spending hours and hours of your life crafting a work in an attempt to evoke a meaning only to have your attempts judged completely inadequate. They too fear their work has no meaning. They too are haunted by the idea that their work falls short of that of a child's afternoon at play. They seek to Speak through their work - and know full well they may fail utterly.\n\nTo work in pure abstraction is, in a worrying way, to choose to work in a form which you Deliberately Have NO Understanding beyond the instinctual.\n\n---\n\n
And instinct is what it is all about.
\n\nMankind has a need to find meaning in their surroundings. Humans have a desire to seek sense in their patterns, and our understanding can begin without any pre-established groundwork.\n\nTake this image for example:\n\n

\n\nIt may be safe to say that this script is completely foreign and indecipherable to you, yet on some Instincutal level, you can Recognise it as Having MEANING.\n\nThis on the other hand:\n\n

\n\nWhile Logistically similar, simply does not carry the same Instinctive Connotation.\n\nIn the same way, I feel, the viewer can See the Attempt at Meaning in truly great abstract art. The artist seeking to write stories in languages neither they, nor their viewers understand.\n\nIn this way also, Children understand the true meaning of the abstract.\n\nWhen the child puts color on the page, they may do so without a pre-established language of symbolism and codes, but they may yet seek to Convey a Message through their work - the shapes of their own Unique perception.\n\nIn this way also, the artist struggles to abandon the tired tropes of their society and speak in pure meaning that goes beyond the ideas and shapes of others.\n\n---\n\nLook at this work from ancient times from San Juan Del Oro, Bolivia:\n\n

\n\nA powerful work. To see it is to be filled with wonder. Who were the people who made it? What were they thinking? What did the shapes mean to them? Because, we can surely see the Desire to Embue a meaning.\n\n
Such is the human condition.
\n\nWe seek to find order and meaning behind our world.\n\n

\n\nAnd we take joy in discovering new ways of seeing the world.\n\n

\n\nThat is why we stare at the clouds in the sky...\n\nThat is why we make our marks in the sand...\n\n
And that is why we put paint on canvass.
\n\n

\nJane Davies\n\n@bokettoshiyou",

Give the destruction of reality in our political discourse of late (nothing new really, just more intense nowadays??), I'd go with this one for today: "Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please." | body |

Ah, so many to choose from! And more than one on my list. The writer known as Mark Twain had a power for summation of truths seldom matched, and even more seldom executed with such a deft satirical hand or a keen wit. But, the quotation I chose first and foremost to present on my list is not one of wry humor, or cutting wit, but one of gentle and poignant beauty. ---

"Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it." Mark Twain
---
A beautiful sentiment. But also a powerful one.
I feel it addresses certain inevitabilities and inequities inherent in the very act of forgiveness... Forgiveness as an act without sufficient compensation. Forgiveness without actual restitution. Forgiveness despite irreperable harm, despite a needless destruction. Forgiveness as an act of kindness even when no kindness is deserved... For the violet, it sheds its fragrance not Because of the action, but in spite of it. Even as it may be the final act it can take. It neither can nor does struggle for vengeance or retaliation against the harm, but accepts it and gives only kindness in return. In this way, forgiveness - true forgiveness - should not be given conditionally, or only after restitution, or only upon proper revenge. Forgiveness is, in its way, the Acceptance of the harm as it is given. It is a kindness given freely in return. In a time where so many people live their lives on attack or counter attack, seeking to balance some unseen score in their heads, thinking that only this Equity or great Balancing of Score can bring peace, I find it powerful to remember the violet; and the heel.
And to shed my fragrance all the same.
@bokettoshiyou |

| body | Ah, yes... My apologies! This is only my 4th Steemit post and I've not yet gotten the hang of the use of commands. I am very pleased with the response however and I hope to write more soon! I will try to remember to close my centering commands as you recommend. :) I'm still working on getting a good format and I wanted to try the centering to see the effect. I hope my future posts are an improvement! Thank you for reading! |
