| title | Introducing: How can you contribute to the Open Source Project? |
| body | BitBoost’s blockchain e-commerce marketplace will be the flagship application for our technology, but our ultimate goal is far wider that launching a single product. We want to build a thriving community of like-minded businesses and individuals, all working together to create, promote and use a diverse suite of open source e-commerce apps and tools. We are really excited about our Open Source Project (OSP), and hope you will get involved! Do you want more information? Join our [Open Source Project mailing list](https://mailchi.mp/bitboost.net/opensource) and get regular updates. As we detailed in [this blog post](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/introducing-the-bitboost-open-source-project/), we’re working towards something much bigger than a single blockchain e-commerce marketplace – even if (as we hope) it turns out to be really popular. Crypto projects are all about collaboration and community. They’re developed on open source technology and the most successful initiatives are the ones who have really taken that ethos to heart. They build diverse and vibrant ecosystems around the tech, with a broad range of stakeholders – from businesses and their customers to supporting services and infrastructure, media, publicity and traders, to name a few. And, most importantly, the best projects do a great job of engaging their communities to contribute directly and indirectly in all kinds of different ways. # Contributing to open source projects That’s exactly what we want to do. BitBoost is looking to build a movement, not just an application. And while [blockchain and the tech is important](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/amazon-controversies-or-why-we-need-blockchain), it serves a greater purpose in providing a focal point for our community and all those who contribute to the wider vision. When it comes to open source initiatives, people typically think it’s all about the software. If they’re not a developer, they often assume there’s no way for them to contribute. Admittedly, a lot of the activity happens around code repositories on GitHub and other platforms, and that can be kind of daunting if you don’t know what’s going on. (In fact, it’s a little like being dumped in a foreign country with no understanding of the local language or customs.) However: # It is a big mistake to think that if you don’t code, you can’t contribute! There all kinds of different ways in which people get involved in open source projects, and contributing code is only one of them. [This article is a great introduction to open source culture and all the ways you can help out](https://opensource.guide/how-to-contribute/) – and why you might want to. Here are some of the things you might like to try out for BitBoost’s OSP. # Developers Ok, we’ll just get this one out of the way first. Code isn’t the be-all and end-all of the OSP, but it is kind of important and we’d love to hear from you if this is in your skillset. If you’re able to help build and refine the [blockchain e-commerce marketplace](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/advantages-blockchain-ecommerce-marketplace/) and all of the other tools we’re hoping will grow up around it, please get in touch – whether that means pointing out a bug, reviewing code or creating a whole new application. # Testers Like being the first to try out a new application? Then this is a great way to help out. Early iterations of any software invariably have glitches, and it’s vital the bugs are located and squashed as soon as possible. Sometimes they can represent a security risk, other times they’re more of an annoyance that detracts from the user experience. If you’re a developer, and particularly if you know what you’re doing with blockchain and smart contracts, you’re more likely to be able to hunt down the former. But you don’t need any coding experience at all to be able to test drive an app – in fact, if you can give genuine feedback as an everyday end-user (that is, with an eye to what it’s actually like to use it, rather than an interest in what’s going on under the bonnet) that that’s hugely valuable. # Content Managers and creators Then there’s the vast swathe of activity that falls under the general heading of ‘content’. That can be directly related to the project: documentation, for example, which might include: * Written tutorials about [how the products work](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/how-blockchain-e-commerce-marketplace-works) for end users + Annotated screenshots + Video explainers and screencasts for given activities + Translations for key documents and posts + API documentation But it also includes a whole bunch of other stuff that indirectly adds value for the community. For example, many blockchain platforms and projects have official or unofficial websites and publications that have built up around them. These host blogs and articles about both that project and the wider crypto space; reviews; how-tos; opinion pieces; market reports; breaking news; sponsored posts and adverts… the list goes on. # Spreading the word The best application in the world will fail it doesn’t have users. That means getting the word out via as many channels as possible – Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and other social media platforms, as well as in blogs and articles on various websites and publications. All Likes, Shares, Retweets and Upvotes are appreciated! Perhaps you have a particular niche within which you have your own following and influence. Or perhaps you’re looking to establish yourself as a crypto commentator and influencer, in which case, discussing a new project is a great way to attract some interest. # Just being helpful Friendly, helpful community members are massively underrated. Every crypto community has a few of these: enthusiasts who go above and beyond to help out, giving advice and guidance to newcomers, answering questions, pointing them towards key resources, and simply being generous with their time. These enthusiasts are super-connectors and conduits for knowledge who set the tone for a community, which would be very much poorer without them. (They frequently prove to be very successful in their own initiatives, too, having built up a wealth of contacts and expertise by doing what they love.) You may have fallen into that role without even realising it – so if that’s you, know that it’s appreciated. # Conclusion We’re really excited about our blockchain e-commerce marketplace and all the advantages that it will bring to the sector, but there’s a bigger prize at stake. And we need you to make it happen! There are so many different ways you can contribute to BitBoost’s open source project, creating a community of enthusiasts around these blockchain-based tools and applications – so if you see a way to get involved, please don’t hesitate! | title | Introducing : What can you build with our Open Source Solution (III)? |
| body | (Find the first two parts of these series [here](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/what-can-you-build-with-our-open-source-solution/) and [here](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/what-can-you-make-with-our-open-source-solution-2/)). # Scaling your marketplace. Once your marketplace is built, tested and released for public use, you need to scale. Here are some pointers to help you attract and keep new users. With the successful launch of your marketplace and the acquisition of your application’s first users, you’re in a good position for the floodgates to open. But that’s not something that happens on its own. It will take some careful planning and deliberate action on your part and there are several critical elements to the process. Plus, while what works well for a regular marketplace can be effective for an open source blockchain platform, that won’t always be the case. # The customer comes first Whether it’s open source or conventional e-commerce, some things never change. Look after your customers and they will look after you. Many businesses go for scale first. The reason is obvious: they want to get users by whatever means possible, bring in revenues and then worry about tidying up any glitches or collateral damage once they’ve got the funds to fix it. There are plenty of large companies that have gone down that route. You’ll be able to list any number that have compromised on customer service in the interests of saving money and getting big fast. They might be profitable, but that lack of concern for their users is an integral part of their brand (internet service providers often seem to be among the worst culprits). While some companies get away with it, it’s more likely that disregarding your users will hamstring you at a vital point in your growth : 1. ***Take care of your customers.*** For a marketplace, that means providers. [As marketplace entrepreneur advisor Shelby Clark](https://www.sharetribe.com/academy/empower-your-providers-an-interview-with-shelby-clark/) puts it, people will use your platform because it enables them to make money and earn a living conveniently. So ‘you get supply first. That is the answer. And it has to be high-quality supply.’ Low-quality supply means a poor experience for users – and that’s bad for everyone. 2. ***Build Trust.***People who use your platform need to know you will take care of them. In other words, is your marketplace fit for purpose? If you go out too early, before you’ve built the tools you need to ensure users’ safety, you will lose goodwill and potentially customers. If you’re using a decentralised model, that necessarily changes things. BitBoost integrates escrow and [third-party arbitration](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/the-arbitration-process-for-our-marketplace-explained/) into its open source blockchain platform, allowing you to demonstrate that trust is not just a matter of company policy – it’s hard-coded into the software. Beyond that, there are [further ways you can build trust online](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/more-trustworthy-website) and create a credible brand. This includes everything from the images you use on your website (hint: stock images aren’t good) to the content and social proofs you provide. 3. ***Build a community.*** If you can create a group of engaged users who spend time together online, swap information, help each other out – and, as importantly – help you out with feedback and suggestions, then you turn customers into evangelists for your platform. The value of that will immediately be clear. There are [many strategies you can use to go about creating a community](https://www.sharetribe.com/academy/turn-marketplace-community/) around your application, but once again it starts with providers. Provide the tools for them to interact, facilitate conversations, get to know early and key users on a closer level, moderate conflicts where necessary and lay down some clear ground rules. With patience and a bit of gentle encouragement, your users will do the rest. # Launch It’s tempting to go all-out with your launch as soon as your software is ready, using the release of the marketplace app as a publicity event. But hold back a moment, because that’s almost certainly not the most productive strategy and won’t serve your long-term interests – or those of your providers. It’s far better to launch your platform when you have your first satisfied users and have already gained some traction. If anything, your initial ‘launch’ will be a beta or soft launch that uses the opportunity to enter into a dialogue with your first partners, iron out any glitches and make sure the marketplace actually works as intended. Then go for a big launch campaign. That way, new providers come into an already active and working ecosystem, with the beginnings of its own community. Remember, most of your providers won’t want to spend time helping you fine-tune your app or bootstrap your community. They just want to know it can help them earn a living better than the competition. There are lots of ways to spread the word effectively, though if you’re on a shoestring then a viral marketing campaign may be worth a shot. Be warned, though: this is a very different proposition to conventional marketing and, to be successful, it will have little to do with your product per se. You’re looking for something that will stand out, a narrative that’s powerful – and most likely funny or outrageous. Your marketplace itself will be cleverly built into this idea. You can find some [guidelines from a seasoned pro](https://www.inc.com/guides/201107/how-to-launch-a-viral-marketing-campaign.html) here – but bear in mind it’s a high-risk, high-reward endeavour. # Build Demand After you’ve officially launched, it’s all about helping your providers by growing the demand side – bringing in buyers to shop at the stores represented on your marketplace. Just some of the marketing strategies you can take to make that happen include: * ***Marketplace SEO.*** This is a different beast to conventional SEO; Amazon’s search engine take a different approach to Google’s, and when it comes to e-commerce SEO the company is actually vastly superior to Google. That’s because the two engines serve different purposes. [Effective marketplace SEO](https://blog.mobiusservices.com/seo-for-marketplaces-tips-tricks-best-practices/) should include details of product data, relevant keywords and effective pricing, for a start. Then you’ll need to undertake a bespoke backlinking campaign that will focus on product reviews and appropriate press, rather than the more generic effort that would work better for another kind of business. * ***SEM for e-commerce.*** Paid Search Engine Marketing is an extremely effective way to acquire users. Once again, you’ll need to hone your strategy using the same insights as for SEO. However, SEM has proven to be the best form of paid advertising by far, thanks to the ease with which the parameters can be customised. If you can understand your market well, and target keywords that are both relevant and not too competitive (the big players will have monopolised those, putting them out of reach for startups), then the ROI can be excellent. Moreover, it’s scalable: you can take a pay-as-you-go approach to SEM, buying a little advertising at a time and experimenting until you find what works well. That makes it very cost-effective and allows you to take an [Agile approach to your marketing](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/how-we-work-at-bitboost-going-lean-and-agile/) as well as development. [You can find more information and guidelines here.](https://growthpilots.com/guide-sem-startups/) * ***Social Media ads.*** are another strand to add to this approach. This can be very useful in terms of segmentation and finding potential users on Facebook and Twitter, then building on these communities. * ***CRM System.*** It’s a good idea to use a customer relations management (CRM) system to onboard new providers, helping them organise their information and think more carefully about what they want to get out of using the marketplace. # Remember Network Effect Lastly, don’t forget [the power of network effect](https://medium.com/bitboost/what-can-you-make-with-our-open-source-solution-2-b8064c155b09)! Simply put, this simply means: the more people use your platform, the more attractive it will be to further users. It’s what makes the big social networks like Facebook and Twitter so resilient and powerful; newcomers know their friends and communities are already there, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to sign up with a different platform. Network effect is generally hard to generate – you’ve got to overcome the issue of being the smaller player yourself – but once you’ve got it, it gives you a tremendous advantage and insulates you from immediate competition. Moreover, it will help you rapidly scale further. The maxim is that the [value of a network is a function of the square of its number of users](https://ondigitalmarketing.com/learn/odm/foundations/social-network-theory-and-metcalfes-law/) (Metcalfe’s law), so doubling your userbase theoretically leads to a fourfold increase in value. Of course, there are [lots of ways of measuring ‘value’ and lots of ways of nuancing that](https://medium.com/daphni-chronicles/the-ultimate-guide-for-marketplace-analytics-b8537973dfa0). There are raw user numbers; the proportion of buyers to sellers; the overlap between buyers and sellers; the take rate; average order size; and total volume of business. Some of these will be more relevant than others. (For example, as an open source blockchain marketplace you will have a very different approach to take rate than an organisation like eBay or Amazon, which thrive off high commissions – your ethos and business model are different. This is also where you have a strong advantage.) We’d love to hear from you about which marketing strategies you find most effective, so let us know about your marketplace projects and how you get on! # Join our forum : [https://forum.bitboost.net/](https://forum.bitboost.net/) |

| title | Tech Update November 20, 2018 |
| body | In the last 2 weeks we have made major strides towards a version 1.4 release, using IPFS with the Ethereum blockchain. The BitBoost team has solved all bugs in the Ropsten buy-sell flow for this hybrid architecture. More importantly, our first mainnet version is already being tested. When testing is complete, we will release a 1.4 mainnet version for public use. In this beta, there are some known bugs that we are still working on. Here are the notes for our testers: What has been fixed since last time: * IPFS clone is generated when user accepts consecutively two sales on the same item * User can not see all active Stores inside the app * Accept multiple pending buy requests for IPFS items * Sometimes data in Orders page is missing * GetTransaction overflow * Reversed statuses “purchase finalized” & “resolved” * ETH disputes – refund buyer status is reversed with dispute opened in transaction data page Known issues in this beta release: * Sync notification text has some errors * Some transactions being reversed by EVM in some cases * Categories lists are empty * Multiple IPFS buy requests on the same item are not logged in My Purchases |

| title | BitBoost Marketplace is for physical goods |
| body | BitBoost Marketplace is designed for physical goods, similar to Etsy or eBay. It is not intended to be a blockchain-based version of iTunes or an app store. Some merchants may try to use it this way, but the marketplace was not designed with the hosting and other protections necessary for listing digital downloads. We sometimes get questions from sellers along the following lines: > ‘I’m interested in selling digital goods, created by myself, such as music and ebooks. Will there be some kind of hosting mechanism where I upload the content, perhaps have some blockchain licencing attached, and then sell directly through BitBoost? Or is there some kind of third party you can recommend to do that?’ While marketplaces for digital and physical goods appear superficially similar, they require very different functionality. BitBoost’s solution is not designed to support digital downloads. # Features designed and crafted just for physical items. When a user buys a physical item, the seller receives the funds, takes the item from their own inventory, and ships it to the destination address. BitBoost plays no part in this process, other than to provide the software that connects buyer and seller directly. A digital store that sells music downloads, ebooks, and apps is a very different kind of system. The store has to provide hosting for the third party content. They also have to protect it from being copied and distributed more widely. This means implementing a Digital Rights Management (DRM) system – a whole other level of functionality and complexity. So, while it is technically possible for merchants to sell digital items on the BitBoost Marketplace – by simply sending a digital file to buyers – we do not advise it. There is no way to prevent users from copying downloads and distributing them more widely. The same is true of selling services. Our system is not designed to ensure that services are delivered as promised, not in the same way that we can facilitate the delivery of physical items and verify they meet expectations. To reiterate: our focus is on physical goods. Our escrow and arbitration systems are built for this use case. Use of the marketplace for other types of products or services is very much at the buyer’s/seller’s own risk! |

| title | Introducing: How does encryption work in our solution? |
| body | An introduction to encrypted blockchain and off-chain messages for developers. BitBoost Marketplace is designed from the ground up to protect user privacy. We don’t collect any personal data, no email address or other user information is required to register, and we encrypt all messages between users at all times. Messages critical to a sale are recorded on the blockchain; all other messages are exchanged off-chain to minimise any risk of a future attack. # GDPR While we believe this is the right approach anyway, our implementation takes place within the context of the new [GDPR](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/our-solution-for-ethereum-gdpr-compliance/) laws, with which sellers within the EU must be compliant. These include the ‘right to erasure’; under the new EU laws, users have the right to demand that web services delete their personal data under various circumstances – including simply when the individual withdraws their consent for the company to hold it. This has proven controversial in the case of blockchain-based platforms, which permanently store all the data held on them. At the same time, they are decentralised platforms with nodes all over the world and – in most cases – cannot exactly said to be owned by a company. Moreover, there’s uncertainty about what ‘erasure’ means in these circumstances. While it’s not possible to remove data, strong encryption places it out of reach of all but the owner(s) of the private key used to encode the message. Hogan Lovells’ [Guide to blockchain and data protection](https://www.hlengage.com/_uploads/downloads/5425GuidetoblockchainV9FORWEB.pdf) comments, ‘Some data protection authorities have found that irreversible encryption constitutes erasure. In a blockchain environment, erasure is technically impossible because the system is designed to prevent it. However, smart contracts will contain mechanisms governing access rights. Therefore the smart contract can be used to revoke all access rights, thereby making the content invisible to others, albeit not erased.’ For BBM, access to encrypted blockchain messages are governed by smart contracts and cryptography. Buyers and sellers can both access messages they have exchanged and, if required, grant access to an arbiter. Thus the data is available only to those who have created it. # Public key encryption and shared secrets In practice, communications are [encrypted using ‘shared secrets’](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/encryption-work-in-our-blockchain-ecommerce-marketplace/), which in our case are securely generated using the two parties’ public and private keys. It’s a neat feature of the Curve25519 cryptography that a common number can be generated without the two users sharing any sensitive information: Alice can use her private key and Bob’s public key to generate the same shared secret that Bob generates with his private key and Alice’s public key. This shared secret can now be used to encrypt messages between Alice and Bob, so that only the two of them can read the content. Where third parties like arbiters may be involved, a one-time private key is generated so that buyer and seller can communicate with the third party without revealing their own private keys. The private keys used for both wallet generation and encrypted communications are the same, and are securely stored in the user data folder as a JSON file, encrypted with a password. In this way, BBM provides robust privacy for both encrypted blockchain messages and off-chain communication. (https://mailchi.mp/247bc905d5c6/sellers-campaign) |

| title | Introducing: What can you make with our Open Source solution? (2) |
| body | # A guide to creating your first app and starting to build momentum We provide all the tools you will need to launch your app. After that, start gathering your community and building network effect on the blockchain. BitBoost’s Open Source Project (OSP) provides a suite of powerful tools to enable developers to build their own marketplace applications. As we discussed in our first post, one of your first tasks should be to [engage with and poll the community](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/what-can-you-build-with-our-open-source-solution/) to determine your market niche and establish demand. After that, you’ll need to start putting together the first iteration of your software. # Why use BitBoost for your app? There are many options for blockchain developers, but we believe that BitBoost’s Open Source solution is one of the most user-friendly and attractive. There are several reasons you might want to use it for your marketplace app: * It’s open source – meaning the code is yours to use and alter however you want, and it can be audited by anyone. That naturally leads to greater security than closed source toolkits, which is absolutely critical when dealing with financial applications. + It’s based on Ethereum, the most mature and battle-tested smart contracts platform in existence. + It’s built by a team of experienced devs and is well-documented, so you won’t waste unnecessary time trying to figure out how it works. + It has been extensively tested in our own app, BitBoost Marketplace. + It’s designed to be customised, so you can adapt it easily for your own purposes. In short, it’s fast, low-cost, and straightforward to start building on BitBoost’s open source software, and we’d love it if you did – [this benefits both you and the wider community.](https://www.bitboost.net/blog/introducing-the-bitboost-open-source-project/) # Building your app After some initial research, you’ll be ready to put together the first version of your app. As an open source blockchain platform, BitBoost has its own community of users and developers. You’ll also have the wider blockchain and Ethereum communities to draw upon for support. Developing network effect on the blockchain and in the wider crypto world will be a major factor in gaining users and building momentum, so start early. Ensure you read the relevant documentation carefully, whenever it is published or updated. Then discuss it with developers in the community if that is useful – either to you or them. Helping others builds goodwill. When you share your own progress and ask for feedback, people will be more inclined to help you improve your marketplace in return. Think about releasing early versions of your software to closed groups of testers. Not only does that allow the community to help you refine your app, but it shows everyone you’re progressing with working software. # Marketing and business development This stage also constitutes the beginning of your marketing strategy. Since these people won’t just be helping you build and refine your app – they will be some of your first customers too – getting involved with the community is vital. [Getting 10 happy users at this point will be your road to attracting 1,000 dedicated ones](https://www.sharetribe.com/academy/grow-your-marketplace-on-a-budget/) further down the line. Choose your testers wisely and you might be able to cut some of the legwork required in your early business development effort. A lot of entrepreneurs try to start with online advertising, SEO, and other strategies to gain a large userbase, but building a small community of loyal users is a critical first stage. Scaling can come later, when you’re confident of your niche and value proposition. A good early strategy is to reach out to a small group of key users or connectors directly. Explain the benefits that your solution offers over the alternatives. If you can articulate why you can genuinely solve a problem they have, you’ll be well on the way to gaining your first customers – and have taken your first steps to commercial success. If they’re also the ones helping bugfix and even suggest new features, so much the better. # Network effect As you’ll no doubt be aware, turning a great idea into a commercial success is about more than building amazing software. For marketplaces as much as any platform, it’s about building network effect – in short, the more people use it, the more attractive it is to other potential new users. If you’re looking for more information about how to build a successful marketplace, you could do a lot worse than read this guide, co-written by JustBooks founder Boris Wertz (JustBooks was acquired by AbeBooks in 2002, which was itself acquired by Amazon in 2008.) Marketplaces come in many forms, but all aggregate sellers and their inventories to build a large pool of goods or services for people to buy. Network effect on your blockchain marketplace is no different to any other marketplace. Wertz shows that establishing that all-important momentum starts starts with working with the supply side. Determine a vertical, pick a location, and look for your first sellers. By picking a vertical you focus on known (assuming you’ve done your homework) demand, and by starting in one place you build local popularity on a small scale, rather than spreading your effort too thinly. It’s vitally important that you build liquidity on both sides – in other words, that you have enough buyers and enough sellers that the free market can establish a fair price for goods and people think your marketplace is actually worth using. The other factor in getting started is building trust – critical when you’re dealing with users’ money. Blockchain is ideal for this, because trust isn’t a matter of policy: it’s a question of maths. By outsourcing the financial element of your marketplace to the blockchain, you’re essentially sidestepping the problem of trust and demonstrating to your users that you’ll be honest with them because you don’t have a choice. The blockchain’s transparency and permissionless nature is a strong selling point if articulated well. Join our forum : [www.forum.bitboost.net](www.forum.bitboost.net) |

| title | Amazon Controversies, or “Why we need the blockchain”. |
| body | ### The disadvantages of conventional e-commerce BitBoost’s blockchain-based platform was created on the premise that traditional online marketplaces are beset with problems – as a number of Amazon controversies demonstrates. We believe that trade should be free. Wherever you are in the world, it should be possible to buy and sell without the barriers that large corporations typically impose. In our opinion, a marketplace built on blockchain smart contracts is the only way to achieve that, enabling frictionless cross-border financial transactions – and, as importantly, side-stepping the abuses of the existing market leaders. A look at some of the [controversies around Amazon]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon.com_controversies) shows how badly free trade is undermined in the present system, as well as the various other problems associated with the company. * Amazon has been accused of using patents as a means to obstruct its competitors – most notably its patent on One-Click purchasing. + The company has tried to prevent publishers from selling books at a discount on their own websites. This funnels more traffic to Amazon and forces publishers to pay the site’s commission fees. + Competitors’ products have been banned – for example, Apple TV and Google Chromecast items were dropped, with the accusation against Amazon being that they would take market share away from Amazon Fire TV products. + The company has engaged in tax avoidance on a scale of hundreds of millions of dollars in the UK and Japan. + In 2010 Amazon stopped hosting the WikiLeaks website, drawing comparison’s with China’s routine use of online censorship. + Harsh working conditions in warehouses and for drivers have repeatedly been exposed. + Individual sellers have reported having accounts closed and payment withheld indefinitely, with no immediate means of redress. These are just some of the accusations that have been levelled at just one major e-commerce platform. Such problems are endemic where there are large corporations seeking to protect their interests. Addressing this is not a matter of better regulation or appropriate codes of conduct, but a completely different business model and structure. The BitBoost marketplace is designed to help buyers and sellers connect directly, with no unnecessary intervention, costs or unwanted censorship, wherever they are in the world. We hope you’ll see the value in that and join us in a new e-commerce movement! Join our forum : [https://forum.bitboost.net/](https://forum.bitboost.net/) |

| title | How does our blockchain e-commerce marketplace work? |
| body | As a blockchain e-commerce marketplace it has no central server, no middlemen, and works fully encrypted. Nevertheless, this doesn´t mean that at BitBoost we didn´t carefully design the whole solution. Buyer and sellers need a supportive environment, where they can trade with confidence, and also a scalable one, so the most people can be included for the whole benefit. In other words, we have designed a simple yet effective blockchain e-commerce marketplace where buyers and sellers can interact in a reliable and trustworthy manner, without restrictions. Basically, we have designed and ecosystem with four main figures: Buyers, sellers, arbiters, and third party providers. Let´s examine all them in detail. ## Buyers at our blockchain e-commerce marketplace The buyers are the people willing to buy whatever they want from any of our blockchain-based marketplace sellers. Buyers can easily create an account, with full privacy, and they can pay with Ether, the “gas” powering the Ethereum blockchain. For this purpose, our blockchain-based marketplace includes an internal wallet for the ether. This wallet can be funded either from an external wallet, such as MyEtherWallet, or via Shapeshift, already included within our blockchain-based marketplace interface. We are already working on a solution for converting national currencies such as US dollars and euros directly into ether, as well as support for multiple wallets. Our main goal here is to make our blockchain-based marketplace as easy as we can for both cryptocurrencies and fiat payments, so everyone can use the currencies of their choice. ## Sellers and arbiters at our blockchain e-commerce marketplace Sellers are those people who want to sell whatever they want through our blockchain-based marketplace. In this case, making an account is as simple as for buyers. In the future, we are planning to allow users to select their own alias within our blockchain-based marketplace, a string of characters and even an Ethereum address (customization for sellers pages is also on the roadmap). Sellers pay their listing fee in BitBoost Tokens (BBT) and only when a listing is successful. The fee – less than 1% of the cost of goods sold – is needed to support BitBoost operational expenses. It will be the only fee required to use our blockchain-based marketplace. In addition, this fee is far less than other marketplaces, and the reason is simple: we don´t require central servers and big IT infrastructures to run our blockchain-based marketplace. The Ethereum blockchain provides the whole system with the computational power needed. Nevertheless, we will develop new features, support our users and promote our blockchain-based marketplace to make it as big as possible. These minimal fees will be our financial fuel to do that. Moreover, we already have a reputation system, both for sellers and buyers. This is most needed, since marketplaces are based on trust, and reputational systems are great for this. However, sometimes there will be problems, so we have developed a new solution for disputes resolution, one great concern for buyers on marketplaces. For this purpose, regular centralized marketplaces offer escrow systems, but it is not possible for our blockchain-based marketplace, since we are fully decentralized, to deliver the same service. Therefore, we have developed a new approach to escrow, fully decentralized and community-based, with the arbiters at its center. These are users who offer themselves to resolve disputes within our blockchain-based marketplace, and get paid for it. The system is easy: a seller may choose the option of arbitration in an item listing, even selecting the arbiter himself. In this case, the payment for the item is held in an escrow contract and will be only released to the seller if both parties indicate they are satisfied, or if a given period of time has passed without any complaint from the buyer. If there is some kind of dispute, the designated arbiter will be in charge of the escrowed funds, and determine to whom they should go. When required, the session key can be shared with the arbiter so that he or she can access the encrypted communications between buyers and sellers. He may require a fee for this service, paid by the seller. Of course, arbiters do have a reputational system, so the community can filter the best ones and discard those with a record of bad behavior, and the fact that sellers are paying for escrowing is a real incentive for good practices. ## Third party services at our blockchain e-commerce marketplace The last figure in this ecosystem is third party services. These are the people involved in the purchasing process, delivering services such as fulfillment and marketing. Arbiters should be also included within this group, but they are so important for the whole ecosystem that probably shouldn´t be considered as third-parties. Anyway, in this group, we can include several services, already crafted within our blockchain-based marketplace like ShapeShift, or partners such as PassLfix. Our plan is to choose all those third party providers that will add value to both buyers and sellers (so maybe you would like to drop us a line, just in case you want to be one of them). Third party providers will be paid both in ether and fiat, with a 15% fee to our blockchain-based marketplace team, in order to craft and support their integration into the marketplace. This is basically the ecosystem we have created. Obviously, it is not a closed one. Once we are online, users will make our blockchain-based marketplace whatever they want, and we will closely work with them to fulfill their needs. We are at the beginning of a new era of blockchain-based e-commerce platforms, and nobody knows how it will be. We can make some predictions but anyway, the result will come from the demands of the community, not from our personal interest at BitBoost. A decentralized system should be like that and at BitBoost, we are facilitators, neither owners nor rulers. We won´t be the next feudal platform lord of the Internet! (If you think the people you know would find this useful, please share it with them – We’d really appreciate it!) |
