      "body": "Alcedo alcedinis, alcyon, or halcedo, halcedinis (lat.) kingfisher; word \"hals\" in ancient Greek language meant \"sea\", along with the word thalassa. According to ancient Greek mythology Alcyone (Alcyone), the daughter of the wind god Eol, was the wife of Keix, who drowned due to the wrath of the gods. Alcyone, out of grief, threw herself into the sea, and also died. The gods had mercy and turned the spouses into kingfishers. Looking for her husband, Alcyone calls all the time “Keix! Keix!\" and dives, trying to find him in the sea. Alcyone days - two weeks of calm weather around the day winter solstice. During these days, Eol pacified the winds so that Alcyone, in the form of a kingfisher, could hatch chicks in her nest floating on the waves.\natthis (ancient Greek mythology) Attis, a divine youth of extraordinary beauty\n\nIn summer, these birds (like all birds) are busy feeding their young, so they are silent and try to remain secretive. However, I always manage to meet them and watch them hunt. They live (I mean the pair) in a ravine, where they dig burrows in the loose clay wall of the slope. They hunt nearby, in the river.\n\n\nNear the river there's a small seasonal lake where these birds sometimes catch fish, which are few in number.       "body": "Today I didn’t prepare any photos of city architecture, royal castles or mushroom textures. This time I would like to share something a bit different — a few frames that are more quiet and nostalgic. A series of sunset photographs and plants.\n\nAll these photos were taken at a truck parking area somewhere in Spain. The sunset that evening was not dramatic or explosive, but it had a very soft and warm orange color. The place where I was standing was not really spectacular. There were mostly bushes, dry plants and wild vegetation growing around the parking area. But sometimes photography is exactly about that — using whatever space you have in front of you and trying to turn it into something visually interesting.\n\nSo I decided to work with the silhouettes of the plants. The branches, wild stems and teasel flowers created natural shapes against the light of the setting sun. With a bit of patience and a few steps left or right, those ordinary bushes suddenly started to frame the sun in a surprisingly atmospheric way.\n\nSunsets always carry a certain feeling with them. It doesn’t really matter whether they are dramatic and colorful or calm and quiet like this one. They always remind us that another day is just away.       "body": "One one of my trips in Summer I could get pretty close to a deer that was looking for food near a crop field of wheat. It wasn't really shy and also a little bit interested in what I do here. I could take several pictures of the deer and watched it eating and then fleeing into higher grass. Usually the deer that live in the fields outside of cities and in the non urban area are more shy than the deer that I can find at Parks or at the Cementary.\n\nThese city deere are usually not so much bothered by our human presence and usually I can get very clos to them but this deer was living outside of the city with probably only few contact to humans and I coul still get pretty close to it. He was on canine patrol and just executing a search warrant, and the next moment, was gone.\n\nA sniper bullet tore through his heart. That’s how I inherited Jules, his tri-color Australian Shepherd dog.\n\nJules is special. He took a bullet trying to save Si. Now, he protects me.\n\nIn the months after Si’s death, I tried hard to wrap my mind around the tragedy, but nothing made sense. I recall experiencing a sense of dread about the time Si was killed, but couldn’t figure out why I was given some preternatural warning.\n\n\n\nFour months passed, and I thought I was getting things under control and coming to terms with Si’s loss. I actually drove to the Eaton’s Centre in downtown Toronto to take in a newly released horror film.\n\nThe film was cool. I remember all the technical wizardry they used to monitor the haunting—the video cameras, microphones and motion detectors. I was feeling vulnerable myself at the time and seeing the movie made me want to purchase some security devices to protect my house out on the Bluffs overlooking the lake.\n\nLiving alone without neighbors was daunting enough, but Si’s violent murder caused me night terrors, and drove me to see a psychiatrist.\n\nBut I was coping well, or so I told myself.\n\n\n\nSo, that night after the movie, I stopped by the food court to eat before heading home, but I could feel myself succumbing to a sense of dread. It reminded me of the way I felt just before I learned Si had been gunned down.\n\nI sat in the food court sipping coffee and observing my feelings. Suddenly, everything around me exploded in a roar of deafening gunshots.\n\nI hit the floor—Si drilled that maneuver into me until it was second nature, and miraculously, on this occasion it saved my life. One man near me wasn’t so lucky, and half a dozen bystanders were seriously wounded.\n\n\n\nThe mall shooting was a watershed moment. I came within inches of being killed—and spent the next eighteen months being treated for posttraumatic stress.\n\nI’m still struggling with anxiety and seeing Dr. Martin Wallace, a psychiatrist who helps me with coping strategies as I try to put back together the pieces of my life.\n\nIt’s hard though—everything seems like a giant jigsaw puzzle where the pieces don’t fit.\n\n\n\nFor instance, the other day, I was going through Si’s personal belongings and found a small piece of paper wedged behind a plastic picture window in his wallet. The scrap of paper had a Bible citation scrawled on it: Prov. 26:2. That was strange. Si never went to church and as far as I knew, never read the Bible much.\n\nI looked up the verse.\n\nAs a sparrow by wandering, or a swallow by flying, so no vain curse shall come upon any.\n\nI had no clue what that meant.\n\nI Googled the verse on my laptop and found a commentary. As I worked through the passage, I began to make sense of the bird references.\n\n\n\nApparently, sparrows wander, flying here and there and don’t settle—but swallows fly back directly to whence they came, and make their nest in houses where they come and go without fear.\n\nSo, I concluded the Bible verse meant whether you’re careless or careful doesn’t matter—God will protect you. Curses will fly over your head and not harm you.\n\nI chuckled bitterly at that.\n\n\n\nBut the strange thing is, Si always said he was a gypsy wandering around, but I was more a homebody—in fact, that’s why I bought the Cape Cod house. I wanted security—and ironically, that’s the one thing I now lacked.\n\nSi was the sparrow and I was the swallow, but staying near home didn’t make me any less vulnerable.\n\nAnd one side effect of my anxiety was becoming apparent. My world was getting smaller and smaller.",
