It is at once an autobiography of former President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan, and also a description of the major events in the history of Pakistan in which the author participated, and of the problems which the country continue to faces. President Ayub describes his village upbringing in the northwest of undivided India, his years at Aligarh University and Sandhurst in England, and his service in the British-Indian army before and during the Second World War. With the partition of the subcontinent in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan, the author's subject-matter widens to cover the political and military problems he had to deal with as a senior military officer. The major part of the book describes the so-called revolution of 1958, the reforms which the author introduced, and Pakistan's attitude towards India, her other neighbors, and the great powers during his tenure. Of special importance are the chapters on foreign policy explaining the author's reaction to increasing Indian military capability after the Indo-Chinese clashes of 1962.       "body": "০৩:৫৫ অপরাহ্ন, মে ১৯, ২০১৮ / সর্বশেষ সংশোধিত: ০৪:১২ অপরাহ্ন, মে ১৯, ২০১৮\n\nছাত্রলীগ: আসন্ন নেতৃত্বের কাছে প্রত্যাশা ![bcl-web.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZe16WnuRiRFfb98erVwEZ7zqf38wHjQn2cbLMoYDiJwG/bcl-web.jpg)\n\nগোলাম মোর্তোজা\n\nদুদিন ব্যাপী ছাত্রলীগের সম্মেলন অনুষ্ঠিত হলেও নেতৃত্ব নির্বাচিত হয়নি। সবাই মিলে নেতৃত্ব নির্বাচনে দায়িত্ব প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনাকে দিয়েছেন। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা একই সঙ্গে আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি ও ছাত্রলীগের সাংগঠনিক নেতা। তার বেছে নেওয়া নেতৃত্ব সৎ, নীতি-নৈতিকতা সম্পন্ন হবেন, সেই আশা করাই যায়। আশাবাদের সেই জায়গা থেকে, কিছু প্রত্যাশার কথা।\n\n১.  ছাত্রলীগের গত কয়েকটি কমিটির নেতৃত্ব বেছে নেওয়া হয়েছিল, নির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে। অর্থাৎ সারা দেশের ছাত্রলীগের নেতা-কর্মীরা ভোট দিয়ে নেতা নির্বাচিত করেছিলেন। নিজেদের প্রায় ৬২ জন নেতা-কর্মী নিজেরা হত্যা, অসংখ্য দলীয় কোন্দল-সংঘর্ষ, এসব কিছু নির্বাচিত কমিটির সময়ে সংগঠিত হয়েছে। প্রশ্ন এসেছে নির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে সঠিক নেতৃত্ব বেরিয়ে আসেনি। নির্বাচনকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করেছেন একটি ‘সিন্ডিকেট’। তারা ভোটের মাধ্যমে অযোগ্য নেতৃত্ব নির্বাচনের ব্যবস্থা করেছেন, কমিটির উপর নিয়ন্ত্রণ রাখার জন্যে। যোগ্যদের সামনে আসতে দেননি।\n\nঅর্থাৎ ‘সিন্ডিকেট’ নির্বাচনকে প্রভাবিত করেছে বারবার।\n\nনির্বাচনকে প্রভাবিত করার এই বিষয়টি, গত কয়েক বছর কখনো স্বীকার করা হয়নি। এবার সম্মেলনের আগে আওয়ামী লীগের নেতারা তা স্বীকার করেছেন,সাধারণ সম্পাদকসহ অনেকেই তা বলেছেনও। সেকারণেই সম্মেলনের আগে প্রশ্ন উঠেছিল, নেতা নির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে নির্বাচিত হবেন, না বেছে নেওয়া হবে? নির্বাচিত নেতৃত্ব, ছাত্রলীগকে ঠিক মতো পরিচালিত করতে পারেনি। সম্মেলন হয়েছে দুদিন ব্যাপী। নির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে নেতা নির্বাচনের প্রক্রিয়া থেকে সরে আসা হয়েছে। এবার সরাসরি নেতৃত্ব বাছাই করবেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী। আওয়ামী লীগ নেতাদের সঙ্গে আলোচনায় প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেছেন, ‘ছাত্রলীগে আমার পছন্দের প্রার্থী আছে। আপনাদের পছন্দ থাকলে বলেন।’\n\nকেউ নিজের পছন্দের কথা বলেননি। বলেছেন, প্রধানমন্ত্রী আপনার পছন্দই আমাদের পছন্দ। এক্ষেত্রে প্রশ্ন এসেছে নেতা যদি প্রধানমন্ত্রীই নির্বাচন করেন, তাহলে আর দুদিন ব্যাপী সম্মেলনের কী দরকার ছিল? এই প্রশ্নকে গুরুত্ব না দিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী যে কমিটি ঘোষণা করবেন, সেই কমিটিকে স্বাগত জানাতে চাই এবং রাখতে চাই কিছু প্রত্যাশা। আশাবাদী হতে চাই প্রধানমন্ত্রী ঘোষিত ছাত্রলীগ নেতৃত্বের প্রতি।\n\nক. ঠিকাদারি বা দখলকে কেন্দ্র করে ছাত্রলীগের দুই দল যখন সংঘর্ষে লিপ্ত হয়, কর্মী-নেতাদের কেউ যখন হত্যাকাণ্ডের শিকার হয়, আওয়ামী লীগের নেতাদের অনেকে তখন বলেন, ‘ছাত্রলীগের ভেতরে শিবির ঢুকেছে। ছাত্রলীগের দায় আওয়ামী লীগ নেবে না।’\n\nনির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে নির্বাচিত কমিটির দায় আওয়ামী লীগ নেতারা নিতে চাননি। যেহেতু তারা মনে করেছেন, নির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে সঠিক নেতৃত্ব বেরিয়ে আসেনি। এখন সাংগঠনিক নেত্রী তার মতো করে তথ্য সংগ্রহ করে নেতৃত্ব বাছাই করবেন। নিশ্চিত করেই বিশ্বাস করতে চাই, সঠিক-যোগ্য নেতৃত্ব তিনি বাছাই করবেন। সেই কমিটি নিশ্চয়ই এমন কিছু করবে না, যাতে আওয়ামী লীগ নেতাদের বিব্রত হতে হয় ‘ছাত্রলীগের দায় আওয়ামী লীগ নেবে না’।\n\nখ. প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বাছাই করা নেতৃত্ব নিশ্চয়ই ছাত্র সমাজের ন্যায্য দাবির প্রতি সোচ্চার হবেন। ন্যায্য দাবিতে গড়ে ওঠা কোনো আন্দোলনের বিরোধিতা করবেন না। আন্দোলনকারীদের উপর আক্রমণ করবেন না, হুমকি দেবেন না।\n\nগ. নতুন নেতৃত্ব, নিজেদের কোনো নেতা-কর্মী বা অন্য কাউকে ছয় তলার ছাদ থেকে ফেলে আহত করবেন না। কাউকে ট্রেন থেকে ফেলে হত্যা করবেন না। শিক্ষকদের লাঞ্ছিত করবেন না। অধ্যক্ষকে লাথি দিয়ে কলেজ থেকে বের করে দেবেন না। পূর্বের নেতৃত্ব গত কয়েক বছর ধরে যা প্রায় নিয়মিতভাবে করেছেন। সেই ধারা থেকে বের হয়ে আসবেন নতুন নেতৃত্ব।\n\nঘ. ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়সহ পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোর অত্যন্ত নিম্নমানের খাবারের মান উন্নত করার জন্যে তারা দাবি তুলবেন। বসবাস অনুপযোগী আবাসন ব্যবস্থার সমাধানের দাবি তুলবেন।\n\nঙ. ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়সহ পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোর সাধারণ শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীদের নির্যাতন করবেন না। হলে গেস্টরুম সংস্কৃতির নামে শিক্ষার্থী নিপীড়ন বন্ধ করবেন। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় হল পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব ছাত্রলীগ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রশাসনের হাতে ছেড়ে দেবে।\n\nচ. ঢাকা, জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়সহ ছাত্রলীগের নেতা-কর্মীরা ছাত্রীদের অসম্মান বা যৌন নিপীড়ন করবেন না।\n\nছ. শিক্ষার্থীদের অধিকারের দাবিতে আন্দোলনরত শিক্ষার্থীদের নির্যাতন করবেন না। ভিসিকে উদ্ধার বা রক্ষার দায়িত্ব আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর, ছাত্রলীগের নয়-তা বিশ্বাস করবেন।\n\nজ. ছাত্রলীগের নতুন কমিটি অল্প সময়ের মধ্যেই ঘোষণা করবেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী। প্রধানমন্ত্রী নিজে কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলনকারীদের ন্যায্য দাবি মেনে নিচ্ছেন। প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বাছাই করা ছাত্রলীগের নেতৃত্ব সেই কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলনের নেতা নুরু, রাশেদদের নিরাপত্তাহীনতার কারণ হবেন না। যারা নুরু ও রাশেদদের  হুমকি দিয়েছেন, তাদের কেউ নিশ্চয় নেতৃত্বে আনা হবে না। শুধু তাই নয়, হুমকিদাতাদের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেয়ার মধ্য দিয়ে শুরু হবে আসন্ন ছাত্রলীগের নেতৃত্বের পথচলা।\n\nবাংলাদেশের একজন নাগরিক হিসেবে, গৌরবোজ্জ্বল ঐতিহ্যের অধিকারী ছাত্রলীগের কাছে, এমন প্রত্যাশা করার অধিকার নিশ্চয়ই আছে।",

      "body": "Yes, I know he’s earned it. Few assassinations have been so richly deserved. But a) Assassination is now the one thing that could salvage his reputation – and none of us want that! b) let nature take its course and c) think of the consequences. Specifically, another few months of banging his tangerine head against reality and I’m optimistic that the 70-year-old over-weight, over-stressed and under-exercised narcissist will either have a major meltdown, fire everyone and trigger the 25th Amendment or, more prudent, financially, suffer a major, probably fatal, heart attack. Shoot the bugger and not only do you end up with a somewhat more competent authoritarian, in Mike Pence, which, I grant, would happen anyway in the event of the natural death, but the assassination will have given the American Security Industrial Complex just the excuse they need to finally nail down the loose flaps of the Police State.\nYou might bristle as the suggestion that Putin has improved the Russian condition, but just ask the average Russian. And you might rush to point out the tight control of the media message being rammed down the throats of Russia, China or Singapore. It’s certainly a different message to those we’re fed in the West, with far less tolerance of criticism of the State. But no alert bitizen is under any illusion about how constrained western mainstream media really is, particularly the American mainstream. Just compare the daily analysis of major US networks (combined audience circa 100 million plus) to the routine work of Rachel Maddow (audience hovering around 2.5 Million and growing – over 4 million for the Trump Tax Show). And if you’re a regular member of her audience, you can’t have failed to notice how little effect some of her major revelations have had on the mainstream.\nBut that 36% is a fourth reason why, however much you’d really like to pull the trigger, you mustn’t attack the wannabe tyrant. I’ve been assessing the probability of a second American Civil War for a couple of decades now, and given the volatility we’ve already seen on the streets since his inauguration and given that over a third of citizens still consider the imbecile to be a viable president, I genuinely believe a premature assassination could be the spark.\n\nSo no, if nature doesn’t come to our rescue, and someone has to shoot the president, let it be one of his trusted generals, perhaps when Trump tries, despite their attempts to dissuade him, to press the Red Button in an attempt to vaporise North Korea. And let that General, when he faces the inevitable trial for Treason, plead self-defence…\n\n…on behalf of the Human Race.",
