For example I feel there’s a perfect Reagan campaign slogan as an outline of your idea that conservatives mainly oppose change that threatens to upset the current power hierarchies in society: “ Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”\n\nHis economic advisor has also spoken the quiet part out loud regarding what trickle-down economics is meant to do: prevent the growth of government during liberal rule by bankrupting government during Republican rule — there will be no way to pay for changes to the power hierarchy if the debt is sufficiently crippling. By the time a Democrat fixes the economy to where social programs cannot be fought with “how will you pay for it?” people will vote against the ruling party because any party in power for 8 years has a hell of a fight to get 4 more.\n\nIf you want constructive feedback, i think theres room for more of a transition when going from a list of “against this, against that” to “for x, for y” and in terms of word choice when x in that example contains the word “for” then maybe “supported” is a better antonym for “against” (and you should maybe have a more balanced list e.g. list more than one thing Republicans supported if you are going to list three things they are against).",

The fallacy can be recognized by seeing someone is arguing that because something is old, it must be good. Tried and true does have situations where it can apply quite well, but when discussing the best option for now it is quite possible technology, thought, or morals have changed since the current/old solution was implemented (and one must still ask whether the current solution was the best solution at the time it was implemented or any time since).",

      "body": "You can certainly find examples of history repeating itself, but I do not accept that it is the rule instead of the exception particularly in cases where the actors know the history in question.  Pennsylvania breaking off into a quaker-run country of its own is not in history because history did not repeat itself.  Finding an example where it did repeat itself is easy because what did not happen did not get written up nearly as often -- your pool of samples is biased.\n\nIn addition, the quoted statement is to not teach children what to think.  I started with history being close to the definition of a school's history class, but the \"what\" we teach our children might be more along the lines of \"historic information\" including everything ever written or discovered.\n\nAlthough the shoulders of giants idea goes back farther than Isaac Newton, he said \"If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.\"  If the giants he stood on were mostly fiction, how come he saw farther than those before him and those after him have seen farther than he did?\n\nFor instance, I believe Einstein was writing about the influence of magnetic fields by the age of 16 -- but he had been taught what to think about why apples fell instead of floating.  Had he not been taught anything of electricity and physics before the age of 15, how could he have been so advanced at the age of 16?  Would he have reached the same heights by the end of his live?\n\nIf we go 'post-history' -- not teaching our children what to think -- we would not stand any chance of it being appropriately questioned.  Children would come to their own conclusions by the age of 15, and those conclusions would be as primitive as any from pre-history.",

Most countries in history were bound by a religeon taught in the home (and church) throughout childhood.  Indeed, raising a child is nearly synonymous with teaching what you and your community believe.\n\nThe founding of the US with a seperation of church and state as a core tennant was a risk. To provide the glue needed to unify the nation, children were taught what to think.  About underrepresentation, freedom of religeon, equality, opportunity, and all the other things that drove people to migrate to the US from countries where the primary community bond was religeon. I'm sure you have heard, \"those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it,\" and without knowing why the U.S. was founded, what would stop one community bound by their religeon from breaking off and building laws that impose the will of their religeon?\n\nOn a small scale, younger minds are simply more inclined to be selfish and gravitate towards immediate rewards or solutions.  Romeo acted against how he was told to think, which is pretty equatable with acting how he wanted as if he had not been told how to think. Fiction, but could you not not picture a similar outcome (at least 5 dead) if a whole generation was raised to beyond the start of puberty without any moral guidance?",

      "body": "I see a lot of agressive e.g. 2-3 failed attempt configurations that forgot to whitelist their own IP, so good job there and I just wanted to reiterate that point because it is very easy to hit 3 failed attempts.\n\nWhat I did not see is what I consider the best part of fail 2 ban: with minimal knowledge of regex you can create custom filters, which means you can monitor any file for specific lines and leave it up to a simple fail2ban setting (in /etc/fail2ban/filter.d which is uneditable by the apache/nginx user) for deciding whether the offending IP has done enough to warrant a ban.\n\nProtect drupal or wordpress installations without use of yet another plugin requiring several updates per year? Yes please.\n\nEven more powerful, any time a web developer is sanitizing input they can simply log it when the code detects a condition they would never expect.  For instance, a log line might look like \"SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR by [IP]: submitting data to a dropdown box that is not one of the dropdown items\"  And the rest -- monitoring a user for how frequently they conduct a suspicious act and banning when appropriate -- is all handled by fail2ban.  Instead what I frequently see is a developer writing the entire logging, checking, banning, and cleanup sequence into every page load.  Just look at popular security plugins for wordpress/drupal.  If you have control of the server, fail2ban and a custom filter makes for a far better option with a fraction of the effort.",
