The Chicago store is acting as a blueprint for an overhaul of the world’s biggest fast-food chain in its biggest market. A glass case displays freshly baked apple pies and croissants. Smiling employees, dressed all in black, carry trays of burgers and fries to minimalist tables. “It doesn’t even smell like a McDonald’s,” says a colleague.\n\nWhen asked why he is spending $1.1bn to remodel thousands of US restaurants to mimic this one, Steve Easterbrook, McDonald’s chief executive, is interrupted by a customer who asks for his Instagram handle. “You have IG, right?”, he shouts, waving his iPhone. He is an aspiring photographer looking for social media followers, and his question answers mine — this is the consumer the 62-year-old burger chain is chasing.\n\nMr Easterbrook, a soft-spoken British accountant, has worked at the fast-food chain for more than two decades. He took over in 2015 charged with reviving its reputation and regaining some of the half a billion customer orders it had lost in the US since 2012 and made it his mission to reinvent McDonald’s as a “modern, progressive burger company”.\n\nIt is a phrase he used with investors when he first took the top job a month after the company reported its first annual drop in same-store sales in the US in 12 years. At the time observers declared the company, which helped define American diets, had lost its identity. Comparable sales rose between 4 and 7 per cent each quarter this year. Investors have lauded Mr Easterbrook’s progress: the company’s share price has soared 70 per cent to $168 since he took over. They began increasing prices, which “destroyed the overall value message”, says Richard Adams, former director of franchising for the western US, who has since sold his restaurants and now consults for other franchisees. “They couldn’t advertise the dollar menu [nationally] because franchisees had raised prices way above that.”\n\nWendy’s and Burger King churned out deals such as four items for $4, helping each preserve a market share of about 11 per cent of the US fast food market, while growth in smaller chains such as Sonic Burger and Jack in the Box loosened McDonald’s grip on the market.\n\nSome question the wisdom of the company’s decision to begin customising its menu by region in 2004. Mr Light, who led the effort, says it was internally “controversial” for a company who had codified its menu down to how many pickles are placed on different burgers.\n\nBy 2014, facing fast casual insurgents, McDonald’s took it one stage further, offering mixed and sometimes awkward messages about its menu. Its maple-bacon dijon sandwich with buttermilk crispy chicken contains 740 calories and 1,780mg of sodium, nearly 80 per cent of the recommended daily intakes. “American palates have become more sophisticated,” says Ms Senatore. “It’s not necessarily about lower calories, it’s about using whole foods, and McDonald’s is playing to that.       "body": "TEHRAN — Iranians dug through rubble in a frantic search for survivors on Monday, after a powerful earthquake struck near the Iraqi border, killing more than 400 people and injuring thousands of others, officials said.\n\nThe epicenter of the quake Sunday evening was near Ezgeleh, Iran, about 135 miles northeast of Baghdad, and had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, according to the United States Geological Survey, and seismologists in the country said it was the biggest quake to hit the western part of Iran.\n \n  Photographs from the region — a patchwork of farms and home to many Kurds, a large ethnic minority in Iran — posted on the internet showed collapsed buildings, cars destroyed by rubble and people sleeping in the streets in fear of aftershocks.\n\nAt least 407 people were killed and nearly 6,000 people in Iran were injured, according to officials and news agencies, and hundreds of people waited in line to donate blood in Tehran in response to a call from the government.\n \n   At least eight people were killed on the Iraqi side of the border, according to Dr. Saif al-Badir, a spokesman for the Health Ministry, and at least 535 were hurt.\n\nAyatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, delivered a message of condolence on Monday, urging rescue workers to keep searching for survivors. “The officials should hasten in these first hours with all their might and determination to help the injured, especially those trapped under the rubble,” his office reported.\n\nBy the evening, however, Iranian officials said that the rescue mission was nearly over, according to the state news media.\n\nContinue reading the main story\nAdvertisement\n\nContinue reading the main story\nParticularly hard hit was Pol-e Zahab, a city in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, according to the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency.       "body": "The future of the smartphone, as Apple calls its new iPhone X, means breaking old habits. With no more home button, this mostly means replacing presses with swipes and the fingerprint ID sensor with facial recognition.\nIn my 10 days with the iPhone X, I tried to fool its Face ID feature. I bought three sandwiches, popcorn and a ruler with Apple Pay. I read an e-book and listened to podcasts. I ran a marathon. I followed that with a Netflix marathon on the couch.\n\nI'm still adjusting. Most of the changes aren't necessarily better -- just different, forced upon me to accommodate a larger display and other forward-looking gizmos.\n\nSwipe, Swipe, Swipe\n\nFortunately, the new gestures are mostly simple. Instead of pressing the home button to return to the home screen, you swipe up from the bottom. Swiping up used to get you settings in the Control Center; now you swipe down from the top right instead.\n\nI knew I'd mastered it when I thought an old iPhone was defective because I couldn't swipe. Use the home button -- duh!\n\nIt can still be confusing while watching video horizontally, as the swiping edge moves to the new bottom. I'm used to the home button on the right -- and tried to swipe there. It's also more convoluted to close unresponsive apps with a combination of swipe, hold, press and tap; good thing I don't need to do this often.\n\nFace ID\n\nFacial recognition works fairly well for unlocking the phone, even if you're sweating and shaking during a run. It also works in the dark -- if you align your face just right. I'm nearsighted, so I hold my phone close when checking in bed without glasses. I have to remember to hold the phone several inches back for Face ID. And I have to avoid squinting; Apple says eyes need to be fully open.\n\nBy default, full notifications don't appear on the lock screen. You might see that your cousin had sent a message, but Face ID needs to recognize you for the message to appear. That means lifting your phone from the desk or tilting your head (at least without changing settings).\n\nBut if you're already looking at the phone, it's much faster to log into apps that used to require a fingerprint. Face ID automatically kicks in; no need to move your thumb. And when buying things with Apple Pay, you verify a transaction before tapping the phone at a payment reader; there's no waiting for your fingerprint.\n\nAbout That Screen\n\nThe iPhone X screen has about the same surface area as the iPhone 8 Plus in a body that's almost as narrow as the regular iPhone 8.       "body": "Anyone who's recently downloaded CCleaner, a PC optimization tool developed by London-based Piriform, should update the software immediately to avoid malware that was inserted into one version of the program.\nIt's uncertain how the malware was slipped into CCleaner, a utility program that Piriform said has been downloaded some 2 billion times since it was first released in 2003. The company said it has contacted law enforcement authorities and is also urging users to download a new, malware-free version of CCleaner released last week.\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNVp3CDoDTXv7Jyy49V8wnggaAR4VijA6j84syU43VWMp/image.png)\nBefore downloading the latest free version of CCleaner, which does not automatically update, users should also restore their systems to a date before August 15, when the malware first appeared.\n\nResearchers at Talos, Cisco's threat intelligence team, said they discovered the malware after observing that data from CCleaner was being sent to an unknown IP address. They said they immediately notified the security software company Avast, which acquired Piriform in July.\n\nThe malware was designed to collect information about users' PCs, including installed software and MAC addresses of network-connected devices, and then send that data to an external server. Piriform said in a blog post today that a \"rogue server\" configured to receive stolen data has been shut down and that \"other potential servers are out of the control of the attacker.\"\n\n'Exploiting' Trust Relationships\n\nTalos researchers said the CCleaner malware was particularly worrisome because it somehow made it onto software that could be executed using Piriform's valid security certificate. As of today, the malware is only detected by very few -- just one out of 64 -- antivirus programs, according to the researchers.\n\n\"This is a prime example of the extent that attackers are willing to go through in their attempt to distribute malware to organizations and individuals around the world,\" Talos researchers Edmund Brumaghin, Ross Gibb, Warren Mercer, Matthew Molyett, and Craig Williams wrote today on the Talos blog. \"By exploiting the trust relationship between software vendors and the users of their software, attackers can benefit from users' inherent trust in the files and web servers used to distribute updates.\"\n\nThe research team noted that the CCleaner malware abused legitimate software much in the same way as the Petya/Nyetya/NotPetya attack did in June. In that attack, which crippled thousands of business machines worldwide, wiper malware was distributed via legitimate tax accounting software from a Ukrainian company called M.E.Doc.\n\n\"[W]ith supply chain attacks, the attackers are relying on the trust relationship between a manufacturer or supplier and a customer,\" the Talos researchers noted. \"This trust relationship is then abused to attack organizations and individuals and may be performed for a number of different reasons. The Nyetya worm that was released into the wild earlier in 2017 showed just how potent these types of attacks can be. Frequently, as with Nyetya, the initial infection vector can remain elusive for quite some time.\"\n\nInside Job or Outside Hack?\n\nIn a security notice posted earlier today, Piriform vice president of products Paul Yung apologized to users for the security issue and added, \"to the best of our knowledge, we were able to disarm the threat before it was able to do any harm.\"\n\nYung said anyone using CCleaner version 5.33.6162 should update the software to version 5.34, which is available for download via the Piriform Web site.\n\nAnyone using the free version of CCleaner needs to manually download updates because the software does not update automatically. However, \"the lack of automatic updates for the free edition of CCleaner may actually have reduced the total number of users put at risk by the compromised version,\" U.K. security writer Graham Cluley noted in his blog today.\n\n\"It's worth pointing out that you may want to go one step further than just downloading a fixed version of CCleaner,\" he said. \"After all, if you ran version 5.33 of CCleaner your PC may have been compromised. It might be sensible to roll-back your computer to a backup created before you installed that poisoned version of CCleaner.\"\n\nAccording to Talos, the impact of the CCleaner malware \"could be severe given the extremely high number of systems possibly affected.\" Talos researchers said the malware might have been inserted into Piriform's software either by an external hacker who was able to compromise the company's development or build environments, of by an insider with access to those environments.\n\nYung said Piriform is taking detailed steps internally so that this doesn't happen again. \"At this stage, we don't want to speculate how the unauthorized code appeared in the CCleaner software, where the attack originated from, how long it was being prepared and who stood behind it,\" he said. \"The investigation is still ongoing.\"",
