The Chicago store is acting as a blueprint for an overhaul of the world’s biggest fast-food chain in its biggest market. A glass case displays freshly baked apple pies and croissants. Smiling employees, dressed all in black, carry trays of burgers and fries to minimalist tables. “It doesn’t even smell like a McDonald’s,” says a colleague. When asked why he is spending $1.1bn to remodel thousands of US restaurants to mimic this one, Steve Easterbrook, McDonald’s chief executive, is interrupted by a customer who asks for his Instagram handle. “You have IG, right?”, he shouts, waving his iPhone. He is an aspiring photographer looking for social media followers, and his question answers mine — this is the consumer the 62-year-old burger chain is chasing. Mr Easterbrook, a soft-spoken British accountant, has worked at the fast-food chain for more than two decades. He took over in 2015 charged with reviving its reputation and regaining some of the half a billion customer orders it had lost in the US since 2012 and made it his mission to reinvent McDonald’s as a “modern, progressive burger company”. It is a phrase he used with investors when he first took the top job a month after the company reported its first annual drop in same-store sales in the US in 12 years. At the time observers declared the company, which helped define American diets, had lost its identity. Mr Easterbrook repeated the words throughout subsequent earnings calls. A former employee is more blunt, describing it as a “cliché phrase” that could mean “anything and everything”. However vague the plan remains, it does appear to be working. It is a challenging time for the US restaurant business. The industry has seen “little to no” growth in visits to restaurants in the past two years, according to market researchers NPD Group, while trade publication QSR declared last year the worst for restaurants since the financial crisis, after sales dropped sharply in the second half of the year. Grocery price deflation has made a stronger case for cooking at home, and a glut of restaurants has given people more choice if they do decide to go out. Comparable sales rose between 4 and 7 per cent each quarter this year. Investors have lauded Mr Easterbrook’s progress: the company’s share price has soared 70 per cent to $168 since he took over. The makeover has already been rolled out in much of Europe, with about one-third of French and German restaurants having been remodelled. McDonald’s feeds nearly 70m people every day, making the tale of how it dug itself out of “staggering” customer losses a case study for the business of eating. McDonald’s executives insist the success is built on a return to low prices and convenience, rather than chasing the whims of diners. With $25bn in annual sales and one of the most recognisable brands, the odds were in its favour to stage a comeback. But the way in which McDonald’s achieved it came as a surprise even to its own bosses. Back in 2014 the prevailing wisdom was that McDonald’s was being dethroned by new rivals such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, in a sector dubbed “fast casual”. These outlets emerged after the financial crisis with price points a few dollars higher than traditional fast food, but with a perception that the food might be healthier. Growth in global same-store sales for McDonald’s had been hovering around zero for the past few years, with demand sagging across the US, Asia and Europe, before plunging more than 3 per cent towards the end of 2014. This compelled Don Thompson, then chief executive, to promise “decisive action to fundamentally change” its business. Please use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. Its market share of US fast food slipped from 17.4 per cent in 2012 to 15.4 per cent in 2016, according to Euromonitor. Last year Mr Easterbrook hired Lucy Brady, a longtime Boston Consulting Group executive, to investigate what was going wrong. She led a wide-ranging study to dissect where people were eating. Her results, which Mr Easterbrook describes as “frustrating, but actually reassuring”, showed that the majority of the missing McDonald’s customers were going to other burger chains, such as Wendy’s and Burger King rather than rival fast casual outlets. Customers didn’t stop wanting fast food, they just didn’t want McDonald’s fast food. Mr Easterbrook’s response was to adapt the “modern progressive” doctrine and adopt a less aspirational focus: “the day-to-day basics”. This has materialised in cutting prices for coffee and soda, serving breakfast all day, offering mobile ordering and delivery, and improving the quality, if not the nutritional value, of its food. “To Steve’s credit, he is not stubborn,” says Larry Light, McDonald’s former chief marketing officer. “Instead of trying to come up with new kale and bean salads, fix the familiar. Fast food is not in decline, and I think it will always be the number one way the world eats.” Please use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. Its share price has risen 70% since 2015 70m People eat at McDonald’s every day. The company has 37,000 restaurants worldwide To walk through the McDonald’s campus is to go back in time. Four levels of faded brick balconies envelope a 1970s atrium, making it feel more like a bare bones public library than the headquarters of a $136bn burger company. The group is about to shift its offices to downtown Chicago, where its neighbours will include the likes of Google, after six decades sprawled across 150 wooded acres in suburban Illinois. Since first opening in 1955, McDonald’s has billed itself as a place to eat cheaply. It embedded fast food into American diets as the US industrial farm system developed to make $1 cheeseburgers feasible. McDonald’s executives, former employees and analysts all agree that pricing is one reason the company has bled customers. “McDonald’s lost the plot on value,” says Ms Senatore. “After the company stopped marketing its dollar value menu in 2013, they never came up with anything that was equally compelling.” The dollar menu accounted for about 14 per cent of total US sales at the time. More information can be found at https://www.ft.com/tour. https://www.ft.com/content/18a64f1c-c865-11e7-aa33-c63fdc9b8c6c After keeping a lid on prices for years, rising commodity costs and wages put pressure on the independent franchisees who operate most of its 37,000 worldwide restaurants. They began increasing prices, which “destroyed the overall value message”, says Richard Adams, former director of franchising for the western US, who has since sold his restaurants and now consults for other franchisees. “They couldn’t advertise the dollar menu [nationally] because franchisees had raised prices way above that.” Wendy’s and Burger King churned out deals such as four items for $4, helping each preserve a market share of about 11 per cent of the US fast food market, while growth in smaller chains such as Sonic Burger and Jack in the Box loosened McDonald’s grip on the market. Some question the wisdom of the company’s decision to begin customising its menu by region in 2004. Mr Light, who led the effort, says it was internally “controversial” for a company who had codified its menu down to how many pickles are placed on different burgers. By 2014, facing fast casual insurgents, McDonald’s took it one stage further, offering mixed and sometimes awkward messages about its menu. The company put clementines into Happy Meals and avocado on chicken sandwiches, while still trying to tap into burger nostalgia with adverts mocking the new lifestyle trends. “There will never be kale here,” declared a 2015 advert for the Big Mac. Under Mr Easterbrook’s watch, the company has taken a “barbell approach” to its menu, beefing up its offers on both the low and high end of prices. Discounts are a core part of the Easterbrook ethos, with McDonald’s churning out $1 and $2 offers for coffee and soda. Please use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. But can the food be cheap and higher quality? “It’s about balance,” says Mr Easterbrook. “You can’t just go all in on the premium end, because then you disenfranchise more price-driven customers.” A new “value menu” will be unveiled next year, with price points of $1, $2 and $3. The premium offerings are not necessarily healthy. Its maple-bacon dijon sandwich with buttermilk crispy chicken contains 740 calories and 1,780mg of sodium, nearly 80 per cent of the recommended daily intakes. “American palates have become more sophisticated,” says Ms Senatore. “It’s not necessarily about lower calories, it’s about using whole foods, and McDonald’s is playing to that. But fundamentally the food is still pretty indulgent.” Please use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. More information can be found at https://www.ft.com/tour. https://www.ft.com/content/18a64f1c-c865-11e7-aa33-c63fdc9b8c6c Mr Easterbrook spent much of his tenure in the UK defending the golden arches’ image, going so far as to request the Oxford English Dictionary change its definition of the phrase McJob from “an unstimulating, low-paid job”. The OED refused. But his tactics paid off, and he was credited with reviving British sales in 2006. For decades the company has taken flak for its implied role in the global obesity crisis. Governments are stepping up their healthy eating campaigns, which analysts warn could threaten McDonald’s recovery. They caution that the company is not out of the woods. “We may have seen the end of market share losses,” say analysts at RBC. “[But] in the past, headlines related to the obesity epidemic have resulted in negative publicity for McDonald’s.” Any new regulations, such as mandated calorie counts, could “negatively impact margins”, they added. Still, analysts who cover McDonald’s remain bullish: more than two-thirds rate it as a “strong buy” even after its stock has already soared by more than 40 per cent in the past year. Recommended The man who introduced kale to McDonald’s McDonald’s: Eating their lunch Farewell to the McAloo Tikki burger? The trend towards organic, customised products has jolted large consumer groups from PepsiCo to Procter & Gamble. While fielding online questions ranging from “do you even sell real food?” to “do you use pink slime in your burgers?”, McDonald’s now assures customers that it uses freshly cracked eggs in its Egg McMuffins and ground pork shoulder in its McRib sandwiches. “One of the most significant changes for all businesses since the financial crisis is consumers are more demanding and expect to know more about you,” Mr Easterbrook says. “They are more questioning of all authority . . . you are no longer in control of your message.” Bernstein’s Ms Senatore says it is “hard to argue that they haven’t improved the perception among at least some customers”. “Two years ago the question was whether [Mr Easterbrook] could bring what he did in the UK to the US, because it was such a bigger market,” she says. “It turned out that he could.”

Mr Easterbrook’s response was to adapt the “modern progressive” doctrine and adopt a less aspirational focus: “the day-to-day basics”. This has materialised in cutting prices for coffee and soda, serving breakfast all day, offering mobile ordering and delivery, and improving the quality, if not the nutritional value, of its food.\n\n“To Steve’s credit, he is not stubborn,” says Larry Light, McDonald’s former chief marketing officer. “Instead of trying to come up with new kale and bean salads, fix the familiar. Fast food is not in decline, and I think it will always be the number one way the world eats.”\n\n\tPlease use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. Its share price has risen 70% since 2015\n\n70m\n\nPeople eat at McDonald’s every day. The company has 37,000 restaurants worldwide\n\nTo walk through the McDonald’s campus is to go back in time. Four levels of faded brick balconies envelope a 1970s atrium, making it feel more like a bare bones public library than the headquarters of a $136bn burger company. The group is about to shift its offices to downtown Chicago, where its neighbours will include the likes of Google, after six decades sprawled across 150 wooded acres in suburban Illinois.\n\nSince first opening in 1955, McDonald’s has billed itself as a place to eat cheaply. It embedded fast food into American diets as the US industrial farm system developed to make $1 cheeseburgers feasible.\n\nMcDonald’s executives, former employees and analysts all agree that pricing is one reason the company has bled customers.\n\n“McDonald’s lost the plot on value,” says Ms Senatore. “After the company stopped marketing its dollar value menu in 2013, they never came up with anything that was equally compelling.” The dollar menu accounted for about 14 per cent of total US sales at the time.\n\n\n\tPlease use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. They began increasing prices, which “destroyed the overall value message”, says Richard Adams, former director of franchising for the western US, who has since sold his restaurants and now consults for other franchisees. “They couldn’t advertise the dollar menu [nationally] because franchisees had raised prices way above that.”\n\nWendy’s and Burger King churned out deals such as four items for $4, helping each preserve a market share of about 11 per cent of the US fast food market, while growth in smaller chains such as Sonic Burger and Jack in the Box loosened McDonald’s grip on the market.\n\nSome question the wisdom of the company’s decision to begin customising its menu by region in 2004. Mr Light, who led the effort, says it was internally “controversial” for a company who had codified its menu down to how many pickles are placed on different burgers.\n\nBy 2014, facing fast casual insurgents, McDonald’s took it one stage further, offering mixed and sometimes awkward messages about its menu. The company put clementines into Happy Meals and avocado on chicken sandwiches, while still trying to tap into burger nostalgia with adverts mocking the new lifestyle trends. “There will never be kale here,” declared a 2015 advert for the Big Mac.\n\nUnder Mr Easterbrook’s watch, the company has taken a “barbell approach” to its menu, beefing up its offers on both the low and high end of prices. Discounts are a core part of the Easterbrook ethos, with McDonald’s churning out $1 and $2 offers for coffee and soda.\n\n\tPlease use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. But fundamentally the food is still pretty indulgent.”\n\n\tPlease use the sharing tools found via the email icon at the top of articles. The OED refused. But his tactics paid off, and he was credited with reviving British sales in 2006.\n\nFor decades the company has taken flak for its implied role in the global obesity crisis. Governments are stepping up their healthy eating campaigns, which analysts warn could threaten McDonald’s recovery. They caution that the company is not out of the woods. “We may have seen the end of market share losses,” say analysts at RBC. “[But] in the past, headlines related to the obesity epidemic have resulted in negative publicity for McDonald’s.”\n\nAny new regulations, such as mandated calorie counts, could “negatively impact margins”, they added. Still, analysts who cover McDonald’s remain bullish: more than two-thirds rate it as a “strong buy” even after its stock has already soared by more than 40 per cent in the past year.\n\nRecommended\n\nThe man who introduced kale to McDonald’s\nMcDonald’s: Eating their lunch\nFarewell to the McAloo Tikki burger?\nThe trend towards organic, customised products has jolted large consumer groups from PepsiCo to Procter & Gamble. While fielding online questions ranging from “do you even sell real food?” to “do you use pink slime in your burgers?”, McDonald’s now assures customers that it uses freshly cracked eggs in its Egg McMuffins and ground pork shoulder in its McRib sandwiches.\n\n“One of the most significant changes for all businesses since the financial crisis is consumers are more demanding and expect to know more about you,” Mr Easterbrook says. “They are more questioning of all authority . . . you are no longer in control of your message.”\n\nBernstein’s Ms Senatore says it is “hard to argue that they haven’t improved the perception among at least some customers”.\n\n“Two years ago the question was whether [Mr Easterbrook] could bring what he did in the UK to the US, because it was such a bigger market,” she says. “It turned out that he could.”",

titleAPPICS, the first Smart Media Token based on Steemit
bodyThe Steemit social network is one of the most significant blockchain experiences in the social 2.0 environment, an interesting combination between the characteristics of these new forms of digital communities and the potential of distributed accounting technology (DLT). Its blockchain has a new tool that will allow the creation of tokens, called Smart Media Token (SMT), and APPICS , an Instagram-style social network, will be the first to take advantage of this element. APPICS is a mobile social networking application that runs on Steemit's blockchain and was created with the full support of Steemit Inc., in which, as in Steemit, users receive rewards in cryptoactives when creating and expressing opinions. on contents of the platform. The difference is that APPICS focuses on the instantaneous exchange of tokens, specifically rewarding the creation and consumption of visual content -images and videos-, similar to that posed by Instagram, according to a post shared in Steemit . The latter will allow projects and users to raise financing campaigns, generating resources for their charitable objectives through the creation of visual charity content. In addition, there will be 4 extra categories to empower the APPICS community : "popular", which presents content trends; "Challenges" consisting of viral tendencies collected by the community; "Live" where users who are broadcasting live and finally, "welcome" where new users have the opportunity to highlight their first publication to gain popularity. The project will offer an Initial Currency Offer ( ICO) in the coming weeks, although neither the date nor the sales scheme of the APPICS coin token (XAP) has been specified. SMT, A TOOL FOR CONTENT MONETIZATION The aim of the Smart Media Token is that any of the more than 350,000 users of the platform can create their own token similar to STEEM in the blockchain of the social network, as established by Steemit CEO Ned Scott through a published post in your account on the network . Unlike other protocols for creating popular tokens, such as Ethereum's ERC-20 , the SMT allows " that content companies take advantage of these tokens by aligning incentives between users and applications," according to the whitepaper . titleIran-Iraq Earthquake Kills More Than 400
bodyTEHRAN — Iranians dug through rubble in a frantic search for survivors on Monday, after a powerful earthquake struck near the Iraqi border, killing more than 400 people and injuring thousands of others, officials said. The epicenter of the quake Sunday evening was near Ezgeleh, Iran, about 135 miles northeast of Baghdad, and had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, according to the United States Geological Survey, and seismologists in the country said it was the biggest quake to hit the western part of Iran. Photographs from the region — a patchwork of farms and home to many Kurds, a large ethnic minority in Iran — posted on the internet showed collapsed buildings, cars destroyed by rubble and people sleeping in the streets in fear of aftershocks. At least 407 people were killed and nearly 6,000 people in Iran were injured, according to officials and news agencies, and hundreds of people waited in line to donate blood in Tehran in response to a call from the government. At least eight people were killed on the Iraqi side of the border, according to Dr. Saif al-Badir, a spokesman for the Health Ministry, and at least 535 were hurt. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, delivered a message of condolence on Monday, urging rescue workers to keep searching for survivors. “The officials should hasten in these first hours with all their might and determination to help the injured, especially those trapped under the rubble,” his office reported. By the evening, however, Iranian officials said that the rescue mission was nearly over, according to the state news media. Continue reading the main story Advertisement Continue reading the main story Particularly hard hit was Pol-e Zahab, a city in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, according to the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency. The authorities said that at least 236 people had died in the city, which has a population of 30,000, and the main hospital was believed to be at least partly running. “My friend was screaming, saying, ‘I lost my home,’ ” one resident wrote on Twitter. “Thank God, she and her family are doing well. She said people were only mourning and their loved ones were under the rubble.” One image from Pol-e Zahab appeared to show the near-destruction of an apartment block recently built for low-income families. Another, posted on the website Khabar Online, showed a pickup truck transporting victims under colorful blankets. Farhad Tarji, a member of Parliament for Pol-e Zahab, told the semiofficial news agency ILNA that his family had been hit hard by the quake. “I’ve lost 15 people,” he said. The Iranian government newspaper posted a video on its website in which a resident of Pol-e Zahab complained that no help had come. “There has been no help yet, neither food nor water, no clothing, no tents, there is nothing,” said the resident, a man who appeared to be in his 30s, while standing in a street with collapsed buildings. “There are no facilities yet. We’ve slept outside since last night. This is the condition of our homes. Our electricity, water, gas, phone lines are out, everything is completely out, the whole city has been destroyed, it is wrecked.” An image posted on social media showed soldiers searching through the rubble at night without flashlights or torches, using their cellphones for light. Officials from the Health Ministry traveled to the area, as did the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Ali Jafari, but foreign reporters were not allowed to visit the scene, in a change from previous disasters. The Iranian Red Crescent used rescue dogs to search for survivors, as it has since an earthquake in the southern city of Bam in 2003 that killed more than 20,000 people. The country’s religious leaders regard dogs as unclean, but the use of guard and rescue dogs is accepted. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was president of Iran from 2005 to 2013, introduced a program to build low-income housing, including in Pol-e Zahab. After the quake on Sunday, his political opponents said that many of the buildings had been poorly constructed, but his defenders said that the buildings were on fault lines, and that nothing could have been done. Initial reports from the Kurdish region of Iraq indicated less damage and fewer deaths on that side of the border. In Sulaimaniya, the second-largest city in Iraq’s Kurdish region, residents described feeling heavy tremors but said there was no notable building damage. Residents in the oil-rich town of Kirkuk, roughly 50 miles to the west, reported similar damage. The earthquake was felt as far as the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Shiite pilgrims in the Iraqi city of Karbala, for the annual religious commemoration of Arba’een, posted videos of people gathering on the streets after the earthquake. Iran lies on dozens of fault lines and is prone to quakes. In 2012, a double earthquake in the north of the country killed 300 people. When residents learned of the government’s lackluster relief efforts, some started organizing aid groups themselves. "body": "TEHRAN — Iranians dug through rubble in a frantic search for survivors on Monday, after a powerful earthquake struck near the Iraqi border, killing more than 400 people and injuring thousands of others, officials said.\n\nThe epicenter of the quake Sunday evening was near Ezgeleh, Iran, about 135 miles northeast of Baghdad, and had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, according to the United States Geological Survey, and seismologists in the country said it was the biggest quake to hit the western part of Iran.\n \n Photographs from the region — a patchwork of farms and home to many Kurds, a large ethnic minority in Iran — posted on the internet showed collapsed buildings, cars destroyed by rubble and people sleeping in the streets in fear of aftershocks.\n\nAt least 407 people were killed and nearly 6,000 people in Iran were injured, according to officials and news agencies, and hundreds of people waited in line to donate blood in Tehran in response to a call from the government.\n \n At least eight people were killed on the Iraqi side of the border, according to Dr. Saif al-Badir, a spokesman for the Health Ministry, and at least 535 were hurt.\n\nAyatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, delivered a message of condolence on Monday, urging rescue workers to keep searching for survivors. “The officials should hasten in these first hours with all their might and determination to help the injured, especially those trapped under the rubble,” his office reported.\n\nBy the evening, however, Iranian officials said that the rescue mission was nearly over, according to the state news media.\n\nContinue reading the main story\nAdvertisement\n\nContinue reading the main story\nParticularly hard hit was Pol-e Zahab, a city in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, according to the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency. The authorities said that at least 236 people had died in the city, which has a population of 30,000, and the main hospital was believed to be at least partly running.\n “My friend was screaming, saying, ‘I lost my home,’ ” one resident wrote on Twitter. “Thank God, she and her family are doing well. She said people were only mourning and their loved ones were under the rubble.”\n\nOne image from Pol-e Zahab appeared to show the near-destruction of an apartment block recently built for low-income families. Another, posted on the website Khabar Online, showed a pickup truck transporting victims under colorful blankets.\n \n Farhad Tarji, a member of Parliament for Pol-e Zahab, told the semiofficial news agency ILNA that his family had been hit hard by the quake. “I’ve lost 15 people,” he said.\n\nThe Iranian government newspaper posted a video on its website in which a resident of Pol-e Zahab complained that no help had come.\n\n “There has been no help yet, neither food nor water, no clothing, no tents, there is nothing,” said the resident, a man who appeared to be in his 30s, while standing in a street with collapsed buildings. “There are no facilities yet. We’ve slept outside since last night. This is the condition of our homes. Our electricity, water, gas, phone lines are out, everything is completely out, the whole city has been destroyed, it is wrecked.”\n\nAn image posted on social media showed soldiers searching through the rubble at night without flashlights or torches, using their cellphones for light.\n\nOfficials from the Health Ministry traveled to the area, as did the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Ali Jafari, but foreign reporters were not allowed to visit the scene, in a change from previous disasters.\n\nThe Iranian Red Crescent used rescue dogs to search for survivors, as it has since an earthquake in the southern city of Bam in 2003 that killed more than 20,000 people. The country’s religious leaders regard dogs as unclean, but the use of guard and rescue dogs is accepted.\n\n Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was president of Iran from 2005 to 2013, introduced a program to build low-income housing, including in Pol-e Zahab. After the quake on Sunday, his political opponents said that many of the buildings had been poorly constructed, but his defenders said that the buildings were on fault lines, and that nothing could have been done.\n\nInitial reports from the Kurdish region of Iraq indicated less damage and fewer deaths on that side of the border. In Sulaimaniya, the second-largest city in Iraq’s Kurdish region, residents described feeling heavy tremors but said there was no notable building damage. Residents in the oil-rich town of Kirkuk, roughly 50 miles to the west, reported similar damage.\n\n\nThe earthquake was felt as far as the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Shiite pilgrims in the Iraqi city of Karbala, for the annual religious commemoration of Arba’een, posted videos of people gathering on the streets after the earthquake.\n\nIran lies on dozens of fault lines and is prone to quakes. In 2012, a double earthquake in the north of the country killed 300 people. When residents learned of the government’s lackluster relief efforts, some started organizing aid groups themselves. After that quake, the United States, which does not maintain normal diplomatic relations with Iran",

titleiPhone X: Breaking Old Habits To Embrace the Future
bodyThe future of the smartphone, as Apple calls its new iPhone X, means breaking old habits. With no more home button, this mostly means replacing presses with swipes and the fingerprint ID sensor with facial recognition. In my 10 days with the iPhone X, I tried to fool its Face ID feature. I bought three sandwiches, popcorn and a ruler with Apple Pay. I read an e-book and listened to podcasts. I ran a marathon. I followed that with a Netflix marathon on the couch. I'm still adjusting. Most of the changes aren't necessarily better -- just different, forced upon me to accommodate a larger display and other forward-looking gizmos. Swipe, Swipe, Swipe Fortunately, the new gestures are mostly simple. Instead of pressing the home button to return to the home screen, you swipe up from the bottom. Swiping up used to get you settings in the Control Center; now you swipe down from the top right instead. I knew I'd mastered it when I thought an old iPhone was defective because I couldn't swipe. Use the home button -- duh! It can still be confusing while watching video horizontally, as the swiping edge moves to the new bottom. I'm used to the home button on the right -- and tried to swipe there. It's also more convoluted to close unresponsive apps with a combination of swipe, hold, press and tap; good thing I don't need to do this often. Face ID Facial recognition works fairly well for unlocking the phone, even if you're sweating and shaking during a run. It also works in the dark -- if you align your face just right. I'm nearsighted, so I hold my phone close when checking in bed without glasses. I have to remember to hold the phone several inches back for Face ID. And I have to avoid squinting; Apple says eyes need to be fully open. By default, full notifications don't appear on the lock screen. You might see that your cousin had sent a message, but Face ID needs to recognize you for the message to appear. That means lifting your phone from the desk or tilting your head (at least without changing settings). But if you're already looking at the phone, it's much faster to log into apps that used to require a fingerprint. Face ID automatically kicks in; no need to move your thumb. And when buying things with Apple Pay, you verify a transaction before tapping the phone at a payment reader; there's no waiting for your fingerprint. About That Screen The iPhone X screen has about the same surface area as the iPhone 8 Plus in a body that's almost as narrow as the regular iPhone 8. But video isn't as large as on the Plus. Video tends to be optimized for the dimensions of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus (and older

titleHuge Security Alert: Malware Slipped into CCleaner Could Steal PC User Data
bodyAnyone who's recently downloaded CCleaner, a PC optimization tool developed by London-based Piriform, should update the software immediately to avoid malware that was inserted into one version of the program. It's uncertain how the malware was slipped into CCleaner, a utility program that Piriform said has been downloaded some 2 billion times since it was first released in 2003. The company said it has contacted law enforcement authorities and is also urging users to download a new, malware-free version of CCleaner released last week. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNVp3CDoDTXv7Jyy49V8wnggaAR4VijA6j84syU43VWMp/image.png) Before downloading the latest free version of CCleaner, which does not automatically update, users should also restore their systems to a date before August 15, when the malware first appeared. Researchers at Talos, Cisco's threat intelligence team, said they discovered the malware after observing that data from CCleaner was being sent to an unknown IP address. They said they immediately notified the security software company Avast, which acquired Piriform in July. The malware was designed to collect information about users' PCs, including installed software and MAC addresses of network-connected devices, and then send that data to an external server. Piriform said in a blog post today that a "rogue server" configured to receive stolen data has been shut down and that "other potential servers are out of the control of the attacker." 'Exploiting' Trust Relationships Talos researchers said the CCleaner malware was particularly worrisome because it somehow made it onto software that could be executed using Piriform's valid security certificate. As of today, the malware is only detected by very few -- just one out of 64 -- antivirus programs, according to the researchers. "This is a prime example of the extent that attackers are willing to go through in their attempt to distribute malware to organizations and individuals around the world," Talos researchers Edmund Brumaghin, Ross Gibb, Warren Mercer, Matthew Molyett, and Craig Williams wrote today on the Talos blog. "By exploiting the trust relationship between software vendors and the users of their software, attackers can benefit from users' inherent trust in the files and web servers used to distribute updates." The research team noted that the CCleaner malware abused legitimate software much in the same way as the Petya/Nyetya/NotPetya attack did in June. In that attack, which crippled thousands of business machines worldwide, wiper malware was distributed via legitimate tax accounting software from a Ukrainian company called M.E.Doc. "[W]ith supply chain attacks, the attackers are relying on the trust relationship between a manufacturer or supplier and a customer," the Talos researchers noted. "This trust relationship is then abused to attack organizations and individuals and may be performed for a number of different reasons. The Nyetya worm that was released into the wild earlier in 2017 showed just how potent these types of attacks can be. Frequently, as with Nyetya, the initial infection vector can remain elusive for quite some time." Inside Job or Outside Hack? In a security notice posted earlier today, Piriform vice president of products Paul Yung apologized to users for the security issue and added, "to the best of our knowledge, we were able to disarm the threat before it was able to do any harm." Yung said anyone using CCleaner version 5.33.6162 should update the software to version 5.34, which is available for download via the Piriform Web site. Anyone using the free version of CCleaner needs to manually download updates because the software does not update automatically. However, "the lack of automatic updates for the free edition of CCleaner may actually have reduced the total number of users put at risk by the compromised version," U.K. security writer Graham Cluley noted in his blog today. "It's worth pointing out that you may want to go one step further than just downloading a fixed version of CCleaner," he said. "After all, if you ran version 5.33 of CCleaner your PC may have been compromised. It might be sensible to roll-back your computer to a backup created before you installed that poisoned version of CCleaner." According to Talos, the impact of the CCleaner malware "could be severe given the extremely high number of systems possibly affected." Talos researchers said the malware might have been inserted into Piriform's software either by an external hacker who was able to compromise the company's development or build environments, of by an insider with access to those environments. Yung said Piriform is taking detailed steps internally so that this doesn't happen again. "At this stage, we don't want to speculate how the unauthorized code appeared in the CCleaner software, where the attack originated from, how long it was being prepared and who stood behind it," he said. "The investigation is still ongoing."

"title": "Huge Security Alert: Malware Slipped into CCleaner Could Steal PC User Data",
"body": "Anyone who's recently downloaded CCleaner, a PC optimization tool developed by London-based Piriform, should update the software immediately to avoid malware that was inserted into one version of the program.\nIt's uncertain how the malware was slipped into CCleaner, a utility program that Piriform said has been downloaded some 2 billion times since it was first released in 2003. The company said it has contacted law enforcement authorities and is also urging users to download a new, malware-free version of CCleaner released last week.\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNVp3CDoDTXv7Jyy49V8wnggaAR4VijA6j84syU43VWMp/image.png)\nBefore downloading the latest free version of CCleaner, which does not automatically update, users should also restore their systems to a date before August 15, when the malware first appeared.\n\nResearchers at Talos, Cisco's threat intelligence team, said they discovered the malware after observing that data from CCleaner was being sent to an unknown IP address. They said they immediately notified the security software company Avast, which acquired Piriform in July.\n\nThe malware was designed to collect information about users' PCs, including installed software and MAC addresses of network-connected devices, and then send that data to an external server. Piriform said in a blog post today that a \"rogue server\" configured to receive stolen data has been shut down and that \"other potential servers are out of the control of the attacker.\"\n\n'Exploiting' Trust Relationships\n\nTalos researchers said the CCleaner malware was particularly worrisome because it somehow made it onto software that could be executed using Piriform's valid security certificate. As of today, the malware is only detected by very few -- just one out of 64 -- antivirus programs, according to the researchers.\n\n\"This is a prime example of the extent that attackers are willing to go through in their attempt to distribute malware to organizations and individuals around the world,\" Talos researchers Edmund Brumaghin, Ross Gibb, Warren Mercer, Matthew Molyett, and Craig Williams wrote today on the Talos blog. \"By exploiting the trust relationship between software vendors and the users of their software, attackers can benefit from users' inherent trust in the files and web servers used to distribute updates.\"\n\nThe research team noted that the CCleaner malware abused legitimate software much in the same way as the Petya/Nyetya/NotPetya attack did in June. In that attack, which crippled thousands of business machines worldwide, wiper malware was distributed via legitimate tax accounting software from a Ukrainian company called M.E.Doc.\n\n\"[W]ith supply chain attacks, the attackers are relying on the trust relationship between a manufacturer or supplier and a customer,\" the Talos researchers noted. \"This trust relationship is then abused to attack organizations and individuals and may be performed for a number of different reasons. The Nyetya worm that was released into the wild earlier in 2017 showed just how potent these types of attacks can be. Frequently, as with Nyetya, the initial infection vector can remain elusive for quite some time.\"\n\nInside Job or Outside Hack?\n\nIn a security notice posted earlier today, Piriform vice president of products Paul Yung apologized to users for the security issue and added, \"to the best of our knowledge, we were able to disarm the threat before it was able to do any harm.\"\n\nYung said anyone using CCleaner version 5.33.6162 should update the software to version 5.34, which is available for download via the Piriform Web site.\n\nAnyone using the free version of CCleaner needs to manually download updates because the software does not update automatically.
