To my best knowledge, I am the first one writing about it. Among the rich nations, the USA is the worst place to sell electric cars. And it's not a bad thing. It simply means that the American government doesn't actually punish its people for using cars as much as Western European governments do.\n\nIn Germany, gas is over $5 per gallon. In the Netherlands, it's more than $7. Consider also the fact than in Europe, any car with an automatic gearbox and a reasonable acceleration time (typical features of EVs) automatically qualifies as \"premium\" or \"sporty\", respectively (highway-capable cars that do 0-60 in 15 seconds still find customers in Europe). And that Europeans are used to paying more that Americans for compact and subcompact cars. Then you have countries like Norway and Denmark, where cars themselves are taxed like cigarettes (that's a great analogy); in Norway, these taxes do not apply to EVs - Norwegian politicians did everything possible to eliminate gasoline/diesel cars and replace them with long-range electric cars. The problem? There were no long-range electric cars being sold there (except luxury cars).\n\nSurprisingly, you could buy reasonably priced electric cars (think Chevrolet Bolt) in the US, but not in Europe where they were needed. In fall 2017, GM succeeded in preventing Norwegians from being able to buy Bolts at all, and kept telling funny stories that the worldwide demand for Bolt was about 20,000 per year (they missed a zero or two somewhere). It wasn't about preventing financial losses, as some people in the US apparently believe, because if GM raised the price in Europe by $10k or even $15k, there still would be European customers willing to buy it.\n\nSo, the electric vehicle revolution in Europe was delayed by more than a year. If not everybody's buying them. But let me state something first.\n\nWe're going into recession.\n\nNot the aviation industry, but the economy in general.\n\nNo, I'm not an economist. I simply take a guess because Primera Air shut down.\n\nWhat does it have to do with anything? Well, I remember the year 2008. I was quite excited because I found out about an ultra-low-cost airline flying people over the Atlantic. Some of the tickets went for about £100 (one-way, I guess). What would have happened if it had become the new norm? Not-that-rich Americans casually going for a weekend trip to some place in Europe without having to save for it?\n\nBut shortly later, Zoom Airlines (that was their name) went bankrupt.\n\nLess than a month after Zoom ceased operations (a similar airline called Oasis Hong Kong was already dead) we got news about the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. And then all hell broke loose.\n\n<center>![44945665721_058fe143fa_k.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbjdFRY5VBeEpwrMijJsgAQ8mPf1eY3SM2ivupwVGGkWF/44945665721_058fe143fa_k.jpg)</center>\n\nI know, that's not enough data to establish that bankruptcy of an ultra-low-cost transatlantic airline is a sign of impending economic recession. Oil prices went really high in 2008, higher than now. And maybe it's the *emergence* of such an airline (not its bankruptcy) that is a sign that financial institutions are too optimistic - or careless, and that an economic downturn is near. But I bet that's what's going to happen now. \n\nNow, back to the subject. Primera Air, after at least 2-3 months of receiving horrendous reviews, shut down in early October, leaving passengers stranded at airports. It wasn't the only ultra-low-cost transantlantic airline in existence. There is also Wow Air, which continues to operate (for now), causing headache to traditional airlines. There's Norwegian (though they might not be \"ultra-low-cost\" on all routes). \n\nBut... it it possible to bring ticket prices even lower?\n\nI did some calculations of the cost of fuel used, per passenger, on a non-stop route between New York and London.\n\nUnder $90, one-way. That was the result.\n\nYup. Airlines have been ripping us off for years.\n\n<center>![8418770981_3d9c47f3b2_o.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTR6jg5GjXnAYQge2Ej6VzyB3okyBkkZHYegRGR7VhYjt/8418770981_3d9c47f3b2_o.jpg)</center>\n\nAnd I didn't use some very modern airliners for calculations. Take Boeing 757, for example. Out of production since 2004. And the calculations I did were for the less fuel-efficient (per seat) variant, the 757-200. The result? Slightly under $90.\n\nOr an Airbus A330-300, filled wil economy seats and just a few premium economy seats (343 seats in total). The result? About $82.\n\nBut a hidden assumption here is that the airplane is full: 100% of seats are occupied. Of course, airlines can fill an aircraft at 104%, selling more tickets that there are seats - it's called overbooking: they know that usually some passengers who paid for tickets won't make the flight. In rare cases when overbooking becomes a problem, they offer some passengers compensation or <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Express_Flight_3411_incident\">knock their teeth out, beat them unconscious and drag them out of the plane</a> (customer experience may vary)*.\n\nStill, you can't reasonably expect the airplane to be filled at 100% *on average*; realistic \"load factor\" is about 80-90% (let's assume 86%). And that means that fuel cost, though slightly lower, is split among fewer passengers - so, higher fuel cost per passenger.\n\nBut with more modern airliners, it is possible to achieve fuel cost per passenger of $80 in real life (that is, when \"only\" 86% of the seats are occupied). At least it seems possible with Boeing 787-8 using the same seat configuration as Norwegian. That may not be the best example, as Norwegian likes to squeeze 9 seats across where there should be only 8 - not really comfortable. But let's take a look at a re-engined version of Airbus A330-300 known as A330-900. As described before, $82 per seat was possible with the old version. Under $80 per *passenger* (and well below $80 per seat) is doable with the new version.\n\n<center>![airbus-A330-900-NEO-610x297.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTEFEonbn8PVVLAqD8jMb71pamWcRXN5jYKctj6EEs3CK/airbus-A330-900-NEO-610x297.jpg)</center>\n\nSo, $80 per passenger for a New York-London flight. $160 for a round trip. But that's just the cost of fuel (not counting fuel reserves). The airplane itself also costs (not as much, of course, as Wikipedia says or as much as manufacturers' list prices show; <a href=\"https://theblogbyjavier.com/2014/02/15/boeing-commercial-aircraft-discounts-update-for-2013\">Boeing gives rebates of 40% and more</a>), whether you buy it or lease it. Additionally there are maintenance costs, landing & parking fees; air traffic control fees (no such thing in the US, but they exist in the UK; and years ago, Zoom's airplane was impounded for not paying them) and crew salaries.\n\nSo, how could some airline keep the cost of (the cheapest) round-trip tickets close to $160? Obviously, they could charge more depending on when you book your ticket (with a limited batch of tickets for each round-trip flight sold for $160), charge more for refundable tickets, charge extra for baggage, and of course charge more for business class seats (which don't take very much more space than economy class seats, and sometimes ARE economy class seats - instead of having 3 economy class seats in a row, the middle one is blocked and the two remaining seats as sold as a \"business class seat\" each). That's assuming the airline would stay reasonably honest (real airlines always find ways to charge some \"gotcha\" fees).\n\n(I should mention that there's another way for an airline to earn more money: cargo. Passenger airplanes usually carry cargo, not just passengers' bags, in their belly. Air freight is expensive, and transporting a 180 lbs parcel from New York to London and back would bring *several times* more money than $160.).\n\nImagine what would happen if costs of traveling to Europe really went that low. Of course, we'd have much more cultural interchange. \n\n<center>![flushedaway.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQme4QX9FVTZ5S5j42aEvzihAHcy5N72xSpaHMdMgdNERNm/flushedaway.PNG)</center>\n\nMore and more Americans have passports - 10 times more, actually, than in 1990 (that's not a typo: 4% in 1990, 42% in 2017). But the Atlantic is still a barrier, separating people of different mentalities.\n\nWhat shocks Americans in Europe? That would be material for another article - or 10 or 20 of them - but let's list some random examples:\n1. Beer being served at McDonalds\n2. No ice in drinks\n3. You need to pay to use the bathroom\n4. Everything is closed on Sunday\n5. Waiters do *not* check on you through the course of your meal, they expect *you* to call them over.\n\nAnd Europeans - what shocks them in the US? Maybe:\n1. No drinking until you're 21? What. The. F.\n2. Tipping for everything.\n3. Everything is built around cars. Drive-thru everything. And why are the roads so wide?\n4. Lawyer ads everywhere. Pharmaceutical ads everywhere, for *prescription drugs*.\n5. The price on the product does not include tax?!\n\nIt may take more time to realize some other things: that Europeans are overpaying 2 times for gasoline, but Americans are overpaying 5-10 times for medical care (and that super-expensive insurance doesn't cover all the costs? then what is it for?). That good university education in Europe can be cheap or actually free (student loans? you start your adult life with debt?).\n\nAnd the more touchy the subject, the more striking the differences - for example, circumcision (Europeans: *w-what?*) or religion (<a href=\"https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/break-10-funniest-easter-eggs-deadpool-2-opening-spoof-insane-end-credits-spoilers-200228873.html\">there is not such thing as religion</a> in Western Europe; okay, that was an exaggeration - there is, but in many countries being irreligious is the default choice).\n\nCulture shock is the most valuable thing you can get from interacting with people of other nationalities.       "body": "<center>![gods-curse-jtissot-adam-eve-serpent-w.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUo6JkP8b73qaid1hdVBTaAyFEEZbBcugoe7AN14yFsus/gods-curse-jtissot-adam-eve-serpent-w.jpg)</center>\n\nI'm an atheist, so logically, this post will be for - and about - the people who spend a lot of time reading and thinking about the Bible.\n\n\"Why did God instruct Adam and Eve not to eat [from] the tree of good and evil\", somebody asked <a href=\"https://musing.io/q/alaisguineasis/p3kfuhyyq\">here</a> . \"Did He Want Humanity to be ignorant of good and evil?\"\n\nWell, yes, of course.  Haven't you read the Bible?\n\nIf you were raised in a Christian country, you probably know the story. A man and a woman lived in the Garden of Eden. But they broke one rule that was not to be broken - they ate some fruit from one particular tree. They were free to eat from any tree except that one, the one that God had forbidden. Some snake (that, everyone will tell you, was Satan in disguise) told them to disobey God, so they did, and were forever expelled from Paradise.\n\nThat's not the full story that's in the Bible. But you probably didn't notice.\n\nYou've heard that story so many times, probably since you were children, that you just don't think the Bible tells the story differently. I mean, the Bible was, until recently, the world's most popular book. You can't mislead people about its content if everybody can read it for themselves... right?\n\nHere's the problem: people often don't read popular book that they talk about later. Especially books that they assume are unworthy of reading. A lot of people with strong opinions about The Twilight Saga or 50 Shades of Grey never read these books, because why? it would be a waste of time, of course, and I don't need to read it to know it's rubbish.\n\nI think a lot of atheists take a similar stance against the Bible. Everybody knows the most popular stories - about Adam and Eve, Noah, Jesus - so it would be a waste of time to read it, especially if it's a sacred book of some religion I don't want ot be part of... right?\n\nAnd they miss a lot of surprises.\n\nBut why those religious people who actually read Genesis for themselves, and notice things that make them ask questions - why do they still *want* to believe that the story in the Bible is, more or less, the same story that they were taught in church/Sunday school?\n\nYou should notice it's a different story. There *are* warning signs...\n\nLet's read Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 - but this time, let's treat the Bible like an ordinary book, with no assumptions about its content.\n\n\"Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground - trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.\"\n\nFirst warning sign: two special trees are mentioned. You've probably only heard of one - the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And what about the other one, the tree of life - what did it actually do? Well, you're about to find out - at the end.\n\n\"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it\". But God concluded that his gardener needed a helper, so he created a woman, too.\n\n\"Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”\n\nSecond warning sign: God lied to his human servants. And the snake actually informed humans of God's lie. The snake, for whatever reason, helped humans.\n\nThanks to the snake, humans became half-Godlike. They became *knowledgeable* like God (but, they were still *mortal* like animals).\n\nAnd God found out about it when humans \"heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day\" and tried to hide from God. God realized that it was the snake that helped humans.\n\n\"So the Lord God said to the serpent [...] “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers, he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”\"\n\nSo that's how God breaks this snake-human alliance - by artificially \"putting enmity\" between snakes and humans. He also curses humans, but he doesn't immediately expel them from Eden. At least, there is time for Adam to invent a name for his wife and for God to make garments for humans and clothe them.\n\nBut here comes the best part...\n\n\"Then the Lord God said, “Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!”\"\n\nTHAT is what the other tree did - it gave immortality.\n\nGod didn't banish people from Eden just because they ate some fruit.\nHe did it because he didn't want competition.\n\nHumans were *this* close to becoming immortal (so, fully Godlike). \n\nOnly at the point when God realized it, he banished them from the Garden of Eden and placed a \"cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life\".\n\nThis is not the only story in the Bible about God preventing people from becoming Godlike (the Tower of Babel is another one).  And immortality is humanity's oldest literary theme, if the ancient Epic of Gilgamesh is authentic and as old as it's assumed - because Gilgamesh is also about a failed quest to become immortal.\n\nThe Old Testament is a great read.\n\nBut why do people reading it keep assuming that God is a good guy?",

We're having the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing this year, but we never successfully landed (as opposed to \"crashed\") anything - not a manned spacecraft, not even a probe - on the far side. Until now.\n\nOur Moon, like all of the really big moons in our Solar System, has the habit of showing us always the same side. Depending on the phase, a bigger or a smaller part of it may by illuminated, but it's always the same side. If you want to see the other one, you need to send a rocket.\n\nThat's what the Soviets did in 1959, photographing the far side from orbit. Over the years, better and better quality images were obtained - always from orbit. So we had images *of* the far side, but no photos were taken *from* the surface of the far side.\n\nBut today, a Chinese lander named Chang'e 4 soft-landed on the far side of the Moon. It's already taking pictures of this world we've never seen up close. You can see individual small rocks - and a bigger crater - around the place where the lander touched down.\n\nAnd there's a wheeled rover to be deployed by the lander to the lunar surface, so... the fun has only begun.",
