Not transportation costs. Not accommodation. Kidnapping.\n\n**That was when it hit me how much insecurity has changed life in Nigeria.**\n\nA few years ago, when people discussed travelling, the major concerns were transport fares, traffic, and how long the journey would take. Whether on social media, in school hostels, at motor parks, or during family discussions, stories of kidnappings, bandit attacks, and terrorism have become common topics.\n\nPeople now call their loved ones repeatedly during journeys. Some travelers share their live locations throughout an entire trip. Others completely avoid certain routes because of reports of criminal activities.\n\nWhat worries me most is how normal this fear is beginning to feel.\n\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">The Incident That Made It Personal</div></center>|\n|-\n\nAs a student, insecurity stopped being just another headline when a fellow student from my school was kidnapped while travelling home for the holidays.\n\nShe was on her way to Abuja after leaving school. Days passed without her family knowing where she was. There was confusion everywhere. Students were discussing the incident and her parents were desperately searching for information.\n\nEventually, reports emerged that her abductors had demanded a ransom.\n\nI still remember how students came together and contributed money in an effort to support her release. It was heartbreaking because this was not someone we were reading about online. In class, we discuss the causes of criminal behaviour, insecurity, terrorism, and kidnapping.\n\nHowever, there is a huge difference between studying crime and seeing its effects around you.\n\nOne thing I have learned is that insecurity affects far more than the immediate victims. It affects businesses, education, mental health, investment, and even people's confidence in moving freely around their own country.\n\nWhen citizens become afraid to travel, society as a whole suffers.\n\n\n\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">Can Things Get Better?</div></center>|\n|-\n\nDespite the challenges, I still believe Nigeria can overcome these security problems.\n\nSecurity agencies have an important role to play, but communities must also remain vigilant. Citizens should report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement when necessary.\n\nMost importantly, we must stop treating insecurity as something that only affects other people. Every kidnapping victim is someone's child, parent, sibling, friend, or classmate.\n\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">Final Thoughts</div></center>|\n|-\n\nThe conversation I had yesterday started with holiday travel plans but ended with a discussion about survival.\n\nThat alone says a lot about the current state of insecurity in Nigeria.\n\nI sincerely hope we reach a point where Nigerians can travel freely without fear and where students can return home for holidays without their families worrying about whether they will arrive safely.\n\nHave security concerns ever changed the way you travel or live your daily life? The moment you hear that word, most people frown. It sounds like attack. It sounds like someone tearing down what you worked hard to build.\n\n*But is that really what criticism is?*\n\nToday I want to share my honest perspective on this topic and a personal experience that changed how I see criticism forever.\n\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">How I Interpret the Term Criticism</div></center>|\n|-\nIn my own understanding, criticism is simply the act of breaking something down in order to build something better.\nIt is when you constructively identify the limitations, errors and weaknesses of a given thing and then offer a better alternative or direction.\nLet me give you an example that I think explains this beautifully.\nLook at philosophy. There is no single universally accepted definition of philosophy. Why? Because every scholar who comes along looks at the existing definition, sees what is missing, criticizes it and then offers a more complete one. That process of criticism is what has pushed philosophical thought forward for centuries.\nThe same applies to science, technology, art and even our personal lives. Progress does not happen in silence. It happens when someone is brave enough to say **\"this could be better\"** and then shows how.\nThat is what criticism truly is at its best.\n\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">Do I Believe Constructive Criticism is Essential for Improvement?</div></center>|\n|-\nYes. Most definitely.\nAnd I do not say this from theory. I say this from experience.\nA few weeks ago I published one of my early graphic design posts on Steemit. I had worked hours on it and I was proud of what I produced. I shared it in a Nigerian Steemit WhatsApp community looking for feedback.\nWhat I got back was not what I expected.\nA curator replied and said he would not even read my post let alone curate it. He listed everything that was wrong. No justify markdown. Poor image placement. No process documentation. Just the finished work with no story behind it.\nI will be honest. My first reaction was anger.\nI felt like he was just trying to pull down something I had worked hard on. I almost replied defensively.\nBut I stopped myself. I took a breath. And instead of firing back I asked him calmly to explain why he said what he said.\nHe did. In detail. And everything he said made sense.\nSo I went back. I fixed the formatting. I learned about markdown. I documented my process properly. I applied every single thing he told me.\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">The result?</div></center>|\n|-\nMy next well structured post earned me my highest upvote on Steemit so far.\nThat experience taught me something I will never forget. That shift is powerful.\nFinally criticism creates excellence. The best films, books, designs and ideas in the world went through rounds of criticism before they became great. Nothing excellent was born perfect.\n<center><div class=\"phishy\">Disadvantages of Criticism</div></center>|\n|-\nNot all criticism is constructive. Some people criticize to discourage, to show off their own knowledge or to make others feel small. This kind of criticism damages confidence especially in young or inexperienced people who are still finding their footing.\nCriticism without empathy can also be destructive. There is a difference between telling someone their work needs improvement and telling them their work is worthless. The first builds. The second breaks.\nReceiving too much criticism without any encouragement can also kill creativity. I used to think they were the thing. When life got tough I thought I was failing or doing something.. As I grew older I realized that some tough times are meant to test and shape us not destroy us.\n\nNow I'm in my final semester studying Criminology and Security Studies. Some people might think I should be excited because graduation is near.. Honestly this period has been one of the toughest times in my life.\n\nAs the son and first child in a family of six I feel a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. We're not a family so I know where I come from. I feel like I need to succeed, support others and build a future that makes the sacrifices for my education worthwhile.\n\nReality doesn't always match expectations. There have been times when I felt left behind. Some of my classmates have resources that make life easier. I've been trying to build my graphics design skills on my phone, which has than 32gb storage and lags a lot.. I didn't stop because I'm not dead yet. Some people already seem to have plans for their future. Meanwhile I've spent days wondering how I'll navigate life after graduation how I'll keep developing my skills and how I'll create opportunities for myself in a competitive world.\n\nOne thing thats challenged me the most is trying to grow as a graphics designer with resources. There are days when I have ideas but don't have the tools I need. There are days when financial concerns compete with responsibilities. There are days when the future seems uncertain.\n\nThose moments can make a person feel broken.. Something important happened during this time. I realized that despite all the pressure I was still moving forward. I was still attending lectures, learning, practicing my design skills and searching for opportunities. I was still refusing to give up.\n\nThat realization changed my perspective completely. Being broken doesn't mean you've reached the end. Sometimes it just means life has put you under pressure. Like pressure can crack a stone it can also shape your character.\n\nA small victory that meant a lot to me recently was securing design work and sharing my journey online. To some people it might seem insignificant. To me it was proof that my efforts were producing results. It reminded me that progress isn't always loud. Sometimes it arrives in steps that only become meaningful when you look back.\n\nThis season has also changed what I value most. I no longer measure success by what I've achieved. I pay attention to persistence, discipline and growth. I've learned that surviving times is an achievement, in itself.\n\nPeople often say, \"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.\". What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger if you learn from it show up every day and keep grinding. Difficult experiences can make people bitter discouraged or hopeless if they let them. What makes us stronger is choosing to learn from those experiences than surrendering to them.\n\nFor me strength hasn't come from avoiding my challenges or giving up on my failures. It has come from waking up each day and continuing despite them.\n\nToday I might not have everything figured out. I might not know what the future holds. I might still face obstacles that seem overwhelming. But I know this much: I am still here. I am still trying. I am still growing.. That means I am broken, perhaps but certainly not dead.\n\nThank you for reading.\n</div>",
