It’s become one of the biggest pieces of software on everyone’s computer. Because of this, it’s easy to see that whatever we choose will be important for our online experience. \n\nI’ve gone through quite a few over the years always trying to find the best for me. I started with Firefox, then moved onto Waterfox when the prior didn’t have 64-bit support. I moved over to Chrome for a few months as it was the most popular browser, still is as of writing this. Finally Pale Moon became my go to due to privacy concerns. Nowadays I have multiple browsers for different web browsing needs, but my main one has been Brave. \n\nI started using Brave over a year ago, when they started supporting Chrome extensions. Before, I found that it was fairly limiting with the lack of extensions, especially for using ad blockers, though the browser comes with its own solution. \n\nWith the desire of people for software alternative, web browsers are absolutely at the top of that list. For the record, I consider the mainstream options to be Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. But looking at the numbers, it’s pretty much Chrome. \n\nSo with Brave generally being considered a pretty big alternative these days, and being a user for the last year. I wanted to take a closer look to see if for anyone reading this, that Brave should be their browser of choice. \n\n**Performance**\n\nThe browser isn’t slow by any metric. Not a surprise given that it uses the Chromium engine, the same that powers Chrome. Loading it up takes no time at all, probably 3 seconds at most when I start my computer up, then much quicker after that. \n\nPretty much most website work with this browser and I very rarely have to switch over to my backups. Unsurprising since this is based on Chromium, which is the most used backend for internet users. It’s an expectation these days that if you’re an owner to a site, that it works with it. This is a plus from a usability standpoint, but there is a pitfall that I’ll get to later. \n\nPlaying videos has been pretty pain free for me as well. Note, that my internet speed is usually 20 Megabits per second. However using a site like YouTube or Bitchute, I never need to buffer even at 4K settings. \n\n**User Experience**\n\nThere’s not much a web browser needs to do to make me happy. I prefer simple over trying to give the user too many options and settings to tweak upfront. At the same time, I’d like the advance features to be accessible to those that want it. \n\nBrave (Or rather Chromium) does a solid job at this, keeping the interface clean and simple to not overwhelm the user. Yet at the same time, there are tools and settings to give it some personal touches. The default options are probably ok for people that are coming from Chrome and like its defaults. But chance are that for most people reading this are going to want to change a lot of the settings as the defaults are not what I would recommend. Thankfully it’s easy to access settings and change things with minimal things being only changed in the “flags” section. \n\nOther than that, there’s not much else I think needs to be added. If you know what Chrome is, then the transition to Brave should be relatively simple. \n\n![[email protected]](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmbC4JzJcjhN7jpQJWbXoM5H1GsceMji2AxikotyzSQUV8)\n\n**Extras**\n\nThere’s three major things that should be discussed about Brave if you’re considering this to replace your current web browser. The first is their “BAT” project. For those that don’t know, this is their attempt at a cryptocurrency that they hope can pave the way to funding content creators and allow people to not be blasted with ads. There’s a lot about it that I’d recommend one check out on if that’s something they can get behind. [1]\n\nFor me, I have it active. However it never feels like there’s much in it. There’s needs to be more adoption for it, otherwise it’s rather useless for a way for creators to get funding. There’s also the fact that I’m not the biggest fan of it’s implementation, as I can’t set it to auto-contribute the website I want to have set up. \n\nThe second is the “Brave Shields”. Basically their ad blocker solution, but it also comes with fingerprint protection, converting HTTP to HTTPS, cookie blocking, and script blocking. It can be configured on a per-site basis as well. It sounds like a good thing, and in practice I’ve generally had no problems with it on while browsing. Though it’s not perfect as some ads seems to be able to get through, so getting a second adblocker is a good idea. \n\nFinally, there’s the problem with privacy. I think this is a big deal breaker for most people reading, but Brave is fairly mediocre about keeping your information private. I recommend checking this site for specific details [2]. Though I can add that this is why I tweaked my settings as much as I did. Unlike other projects based on Chromium, Brave makes no mention, nor any attempt, to remove itself from Google. \n\nIt’s BAT program is another point of weakness, as part of it includes allowing “acceptable” ads. Something that was a bit of some controversy with the popular Ad Block Plus extension. You can’t even turn off the auto-updates, meaning that the browser will always check every time you start it up. \n\nSo in summery, I think the Brave web browser is a solid alternative to Chrome. If you don’t care about the privacy concerns and the BAT program is interesting to you, then I’d say give it a shot. However, I think that most people should look elsewhere for a browser that can fit their needs better if they are on the lookout for alternatives. Being able to stay both motivated and being able to actually finish a story. It’s understandable hard, especially if you aren’t a full time author. Things like work and other obligations get in the way, and there’s no avoiding that. \n\nEven if you were someone selling novels enough to support yourself, making sure a story can get finished and done well without disregard for quality is challenging. It doesn’t even have to be fictional, I try my best to get these pieces out as often as I can, but life gets in the way as I’m sure any blogger will tell you. \n\nThe most important thing is that you find the way to keep a consistent pace and be able to finish a piece. Ultimately that what readers want, is to be able to continue reading. But what are ways to make sure that happens?\n\n**Setting Small Goals**\n\nFirst off would be one for motivation. For smaller project this isn’t very feasible. For example, for this article I only plan to write maybe 1500 words at most. They aren’t many, if any, milestones I could set within this piece that would feel satisfying. But for writing a novel or any multiple part work, then this is a great idea that many people would say works across many different fields. \n\nBut why does this work, one may ask. Well I would say it boils down to two primary reasons. The first more obvious answer is that it keeps you motivated. It takes time for large goals to come to fruition, and that can be demoralizing as people like to see results when trying to achieve anything. It’s why so many people quit, they lose the ability to see that they can finish what they start. \n\nSo if we’re talking novels, then it should come that milestones should be in place to give authors the encouragement they need to keep writing. It doesn’t have to be complex, could just be as simple as writing a certain number of words or finishing a chapter within the story. At the same time though, these goals needs to be meaningful to you. Otherwise reaching these goals will feel meaningless, which defeats the purpose of setting them in the first place. \n\nThe other less obvious reason is flexibility. I haven’t seen anyone mention this whenever I see the topic of setting small achievable milestones for reaching their bigger plans. What I mean for this is that smaller goals are more negotiable. You can afford to fail them, because the ultimate plan is reaching the big goal. \n\nOf course shouldn’t just accept failure, but learn from it. There are many reasons something just doesn’t work out. An unexpected turn of events or you miscalculated what you can do in a certain amount of time. Use these smaller goals to get you in the right direction to achieving your ultimate goals. \n\n**A Consistent Schedule**\n\nBeing consistent is key to success. While you might not have huge highs, the more important thing is to avoid the lows. When it comes to motivation, you got to avoid being discouraged. On a practical sense, having a schedule that is planned out properly and stuck to is key to making it to the end of a project. \n\nThis isn’t strictly related to just writing, but that’s why it’s so important to follow through with your plans in order to make it to your goals. At the same time, these schedules don’t have to be 100% rigid or put at a daily level. You need to find the pace at your own time in order for this to work. \n\nFor example, let’s say that you have work for most of the week. Then another day has to be dedicated for taking care of errands needed for living, such as shopping. If you only have one day out of a week, then set some time there and make sure that you do it at that time, every week. \n\nTake this like building a habit. The most common number to making it stick is 21 days. While daily may not be the most feasible for some, you can still make sure you fit it in and keep to it. Of course we all know that you have to do it, in order to do it. But when I was researching ideas for this topic, I encountered a YouTube channel that goes by the name “Terrible Writing Advice”. Don’t worry about the name, it’s in reference to their satirical take on ideas and concepts in writing. \n\nWhile the video of course is mainly played for laughs, I did check out their website that has an article talking about this topic. (https://archive.fo/dztIw) There are a couple things, but my main takeaway from reading it was the idea of actually putting in the work in writing it. \n\nAn example is whether or not you should outline. Something that I’ll discuss on the best practices of making one in a future piece. I’m fairly adamant that one should have an outline before beginning their first draft. They believe that it’s only optional, and I understand what they mean. \n\nYou can’t, and shouldn’t plan out every detail of your story in an outline. Otherwise you’d pretty much have a completed story that isn’t written. It’s also too rigid, there’s should be some free flow during the writing process itself for creativity. \n\nSo just remember, that when you can finally sit down and pull up your writing. Just relax and let it come to you because finishing your work, means doing your work. \n\n*Writing Workshop is a series I’m creating as I learn more about writing. I am no expert, but I believe that I can help beginners find their words and create stories that are well made with less struggles during the process.*\n\n*There are many amateur writers that I don’t believe take the time to really learn the craft and I hope that this series can at least change it, if only a little.
