permlinka-day-as-a-journalist-working-with-the-general-public
titleA day as a Journalist working with the general public
bodyI'm training to be a journalist. As in, I'm currently doing a degree in journalism which requires me having to go out and do work experience with various news corporations. I especially want to work in radio, so I'm trying to narrow down my work experience to radio broadcasting stations. Being a journalist, much like retail (which I currently work in as a weekend job) exposes you to the general public. I recall more recently going out to ask people for short answers on something that was trending in the news at the time. This is what we call a voxpop; it entails asking random people on the street or in a specific area, (e.g the people of Trafalgar Square). This time the topic was to do with a change in speeding fines and how the law would punish for it. I basically had to walk around for about an hour, stopping people and asking them their opinions whilst recording audio on a mobile phone. I would then (later on, back in the office) edit them for quick sound bites to use on the radio. Sounds simple, right? Well, when approaching the general public, the majority of them will just decline, saying something like 'No, I'm sorry, I've got to catch the bus/get back to work/I'm about to miss my class!' before sitting down on a bench in full sight for a further half hour, smoking a cigarette or browsing Facebook. Which is completely fine. (For the record, I also accept 'I don't want to' but I appreciate the effort to try and be polite/avoid awkwardness and the former response would probably be similar to my own.) Then you get the rude people. People who just stare at you. People who just walk away. People who literally just turn their head away as though they haven't heard you. That's still fine. Rude, but to be expected. This one particular day I remember going up to a middle aged woman and saying something along the lines of 'Hey, sorry to bother you, but I work for XXX and I was just wondering if you had a minute to tell me what you think about the new speeding fine policy? It would just be a quick audio recording on this microphone' (Mobile phone with microphone cover showing company logo). At this point she (after giving me a dirty look) said 'No'. I thought, fair enough, said 'Thanks anyways, have a nice day' and turned to walk away. It was at this point she began talking to me again, saying 'I think that the new speeding fine is a very good idea, my opinion is that it will teach more people to....' Confused, I turned back around and quickly pressed record on my phone, not wanting to miss anything good she could say. Or else, I'd end up kicking myself that I hadn't caught a fine piece of audio to make me look at least half competent to the company grading me on my work experience. I held out my phone a little in her direction, about elbow length (never in the face) from her to catch the sounds as we were outdoors. It was then that she actually reached out and hit me, slapping my arm and the phone (which belonged to the company I was on work experience with). I just remember walking away, thinking -what happened?- Another man I interviewed on the same day was sat on a bench. He was a fairly young looking man, on his own. I walked up and asked him if I was bothering him to which he replied 'no'. I then explained the whole situation and he said he would be happy to help and that he actually had some strong opinions on the matter. He was very posh, or at least his accent initially indicated as much. His answers then seemed to confirm this. 'I think that rich people get away with far too much as it is. I mean, I went to private school with some people who speed all the time and think nothing of it. Even my dad is so rich it, fine wouldn't affect him.' A fair answer in terms of what I was looking for. In fact, the sound bites were very passionate and quite unexpected in that I thought it could make a very good vox pop. Then he continued going 'Look at Batman! He gets away with everything because he's rich! And all these villains...they can raise hell as long as they have the money to fund it!' I smiled and kept recording. What an odd, quirky man. But it's people like this which make the job interesting, and he was helping me out by providing me with opportunity for lots of material. Of course, I wouldn't use the irrelevant stuff but he was telling me things he thought were relevant. So I was grateful. I began to shut off the recording app on my phone as I was about to thank him for his help, when we were approached by a man. Now, I hate to make judgements but this man had been sitting with his friends on a bench nearby and didn't look homeless at all. I am aware looks can be decieving but the man was wearing designer tracksuit gear and walked over with a nasty attitude. It was as he got closer I realised he was high. He ignored me and went straight for the young man I had just finished interviewing. Of course, I was awkwardly stood right there as I had not yet been given the chance to say thank you. We had literally just finished recording. The man approaching said 'Mate do you have any spare money' (Not specifying what for). At this point I felt super, super awkward. Do I just walk away or wait until this encounter had finished to say thank you as I usually would before leaving? The man I had been interviewing didn't even turn his head to the man and without hesitation said 'No.' The approaching man was visibly shocked by the man's response and demeanour. He said 'Aw, what mate? Why not?' Interviwee man, without turning his head once more, locking eye contact with me (I was feeling extremely uncomfortable at this point) said 'I'm not very generous.' The approaching man swore a bit whilst the interviewee man just said to me 'I apologise, I have many mental health problems'. I just said 'No. Don't apologise, you've helped me out today at least! Thanks so much' Before swiftly walking away, thinking what on earth just happened. I hope I can one day become a successful because these little anecdotes I collect, although sometimes threatening and rude, always make for an interesting day. Or at the very least, an interesting conversation later on.

The approaching man swore a bit whilst the interviewee man just said to me 'I apologise, I have many mental health problems'.\n\nI just said 'No. Don't apologise, you've helped me out today at least! Thanks so much' Before swiftly walking away, thinking what on earth just happened.\n\nI hope I can one day become a successful because these little anecdotes I collect, although sometimes threatening and rude, always make for an interesting day. Or at the very least, an interesting conversation later on.",
