| body | .jpg) Our reflexive, logic and analytical processing capacity it’s limited. Our mind has the same parameters and works the same as 2.000 years ago but the quantity of information that we receive has increased exponentially. Besides, the pace at which the information changes/is renewing has grown a lot. In this circumstances, with this limited capacity of information processing, in a world that has a lot of fast information – every 10 minutes a breaking news occurs – we do not analytically process the information that we receive. We don’t have the time to analyze nor the source, nor the validity, or the evidence behind those informations. If that’s the case, we believe by default that the information we receive is true. When that happens, we find ourselves contaminated with the hints that are present in those messages/informations. Then, the difference between a true information and a false one becomes almost impossible to see because our brain does not have the capacity to process that much information at a time. 2000 – 2500 years ago, in ancient Greece a danger just like the present one aroused. In Athenia city sophists could argue anything. They were masters in argumentation. They were using false but „seductive” arguments, and they could win any court case – and they became a danger for the Athenian democracy. Aristotle figured out that the sophists represent a danger for the Athenian democracy because they could argue anything with false data and he wrote two books on logic. He suggested that „these are the rules of logic. What does not follow the rules of logic is not correct. Another way to put this, he has put a barrier on the sophists and he helped a lot in the democratic play by saying that not every speech, based on the sophistic argumentation, it’s a logical one. He could do that because the quantity of information in those times was small. Nowadays an Aristotle is not enough. The quantity of information is immense and the rapidity with which this information appears it makes impossible for the brain to have a reflexive view on that information – because another information appears, and another, and another.... – and we take the home message as true. In these circumstances the manipulation becomes a lot easier. This is a first factor that makes the manipulation to work: The quantity of information is very/too big. The second factor is social networking sites. Those sites have some basic algorithms that make you receive informations that you like. They work by a simple rule: They offer you the same kind of information that you looked for in the past days/hours and from the same sources that you searched for in the past. These algorithms are based on your own preference not on the validity of the information. There is another phenomenon here: your friends have almost the same preferences like you. This leads to a process that in psychology is referred to as group think: we all think the same and we support/we feed each other's beliefs. So, when this happens almost everything that comes from social network sites it’s taken by default as true. Why is this happening? First of all: all my friends like that information. Second of all: the information is familiar and it looks like those that I searched for in the past day, or the past week. The credibility of those information increases and we don’t analyze it logically anymore. That being said, in the first place, the quantity of information and it’s rapidity; second the basic algorithms of the social networking sites make the manipulation of people more easier and more frequent than ever. |

In these circumstances the manipulation becomes a lot easier.\n\nThis is a first factor that makes the manipulation to work: The quantity of information is very/too big.\n\nThe second factor is social networking sites. Those sites have some basic algorithms that make you receive informations that you like. \n\nThey work by a simple rule: They offer you the same kind of information that you looked for in the past days/hours and from the same sources that you searched for in the past. These algorithms are based on your own preference not on the validity of the information.\n\nThere is another phenomenon here: your friends have almost the same preferences like you. This leads to a process that in psychology is referred to as group think: we all think the same and we support/we feed each other's beliefs.\nSo, when this happens almost everything that comes from social network sites it’s taken by default as true. Why is this happening? First of all: all my friends like that information. Second of all: the information is familiar and it looks like those that I searched for in the past day, or the past week. The credibility of those information increases and we don’t analyze it logically anymore.\n\nThat being said, in the first place, the quantity of information and it’s rapidity; second the basic algorithms of the social networking sites make the manipulation of people more easier and more frequent than ever.",

| body | We all know already that every human behavior is guided by reinforcement or punishment. That’s something that Skinner foud in 1938. He said that if the consequences are bad, there is a high chance the action will not be repeated; if the consequences are good, the actions that led to it being repeated become more probable. Another way to put this, we do something because we like doing it/we get something that we like in return(that means positive reinfocement) or because we avoid something bad by doing that action/behavior(that’s negative reiforcement). We do not do something either because we get punished in return or because we do not get anything pleasant out of doing it(that’s punishment). Knowing that, today I’m going to talk about how we can force/motivate/trick our brain to do more of what’s important, but not pleasant. This means learning, working, training, etc. The first thing you need to know is that if you reinforce a behavior it will become more frequent. But I noticed that a lot of people don’t know how to do that properly. So, what means to reinforce a behavior and how exactly do we do that? To reinforce a behavior means to do something pleasant AFTER you finished the behavior you want to grow in frequency. For example if you like something(eating chocolate, reading a good book or just relaxing in bed) you need to do that AFTER you accomplished the activity you want to reinforce. Pay attention to how the frequency of the behavior changes after you tried to reinforce it properly. If the frequency does not grow, that meas that the activity you do AFTER does not represent a reinforcement for the target behavior. Another way to put this, a pleasant activity(eating chocolate, reading a good book or just relaxing in bed) represents a reinforcement for a behavior only if it’s strengthen that behavior! The simplest way to reinforce a behavior, from my point of view, is by using the Premack’s priciple. The Premack principle suggests that if a natural high frequent activity is conditioned by a low frequent activity, the last one will become automatically more frequent. An individual will be more motivated to perform a particular activity if he knows that he will partake in a more desirable activity as a consequence. So what you need to do is to pay attention at those activities/behaviors that you do often and then formulate a rule like this: I won’t do X until I finish Y! (I won’t watch movies until I finish my homework). Another important thing here is to do the high-probability behavior right after the low-probability behavior. That makes the Premack’s principle work at its best. |
