      "body": "This week we are publishing something a little more advanced. Here is a 13th century “cantar”, an oral poem that Castilian troubadours would recite in towns’ main squares and the like. It features El Cid, a Castilian nobleman who lived in the 11th century and went to become the protagonist of the Cantar de Mio Cid (1140-1207), the oldest preserved epic poem in Spanish.\n\nIn this poem, El Cid is acting as a “prosecutor” in an oath that Alfonso VI, the king of Castile, is supposed to take to prove that he didn’t kill (or order to kill) his brother, the previous king. El Cid basically wishes Alfonso a non-honorable death (he wishes him to be killed by villains riding donkeys instead of noblemen riding horses, using a cheap knife instead of a golden dagger, in the middle of the countryside instead of in a village, etc.) if he had anything to do or consented to the magnicide.\n\nHere is some vocabulary you may want to learn before reading the poem. Well, we would never phrase it like that in Spanish, and in this case this is purely idiomatic. The way it’s written, we would think employees wash other people’s hands. Even if we added a possessive adjective, it would still be strange in Spanish:\n\nEmployees must wash their hands.\nLos empleados deben lavar sus manos.\n\nThe example above is perfectly grammatical, and yet we would never say that. For most personal care stuff we prefer reflexive verbs hands down.       "body": "This week’s newsletter is about a very simple concept: in Spanish, when we are talking about nouns with an “in general” meaning, we must always use the definite article (el, la, los, las). Nouns with an “in general” meaning are often in the subject position (i.e. at the beginning of the sentence).\n\nIn every other case, the use of the article is identical in English and Spanish (I eat an apple, como una manzana; I eat the apple, como la manzana).\n\nLet’s look at this sign:\n\n![IMG_0165.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRzasauGW2kU5qmg6UVbueqxzDPZHu1aUACzqHkLkR272/IMG_0165.JPG)\n\nThis is correct, as it means “employees in general.” (Must should be deben, with a ‘b’, but that’s a different topic.
