titleNaNoWriMo and the real world
body![nanowrimo.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPQ9bmsvAp2F7UYwwWHajs4udHSoxEtsAbN8MiCheatPF/nanowrimo.png) NaNoWriMo (short for National Novel Writing Month) is an annual event where people all over the world write every day in November, with the aim of having written 50,000 words of a story they’ve been meaning to write but never found the time for. And dear God, is it hard. I love writing, I really do. If I had my way, I’d spend all my time writing the plays, stories, and strange little things that pop into my head. But I don’t get my way. You know who does get their way? Landlords. Electricity companies. Now I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that… in this post, maybe I will some other time. What I am saying in this post is that I can’t spend all my time writing creative things and also afford my rent. So while I spend my time earning money, all of my creative ideas sit in notebooks, just waiting to be written. Poor little things, if only they knew how unlikely that was. NaNoWriMo is the perfect opportunity for someone like me to stop, think, and say “Okay, this month I’m going to put an extra little bit of time aside and finally start that novel I’ve always wanted to write”. In theory, that’s fine, but there’s one little thing stopping me: the number 1,667. For those of you not familiar with NaNoWriMo, you’re supposed to write 1,667 words every single day in order to reach your final goal of 50,000 words in a month. These words can include not only your novel, but any kind of plans or drafts relating to your story. For me, these 1,667 words include every single word I write that month. Emails? Yup. Writing I’ve done for work? You bet. A particularly long Facebook message to a friend? Oh yeah, throw it in there, rack up that word count. If I’ve had a typed conversation with you during a November over the past three years, I’d like to thank you personally for helping me reach my word count. Some people would call this cheating; “You’re only supposed to include your designated NaNoWriMo work in your word count!” they cry. And I hear you, my friends, I do. But 1,667 words isn’t something you can just churn out in half an hour; maybe you can for the first few days when you’re full of ideas and really enthusiastic, but that number is very likely to go down after the first week. In order to produce 1,667 words every single day, you need to dedicate a significant amount of time each day not only to writing your piece, but also to thinking about it and figuring out what that day’s words will be. ![nanowrimo-day30.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRaQvngXq28iD8kDb1ZeHc9zDoGv16ttwY93qtr1RK4Pq/nanowrimo-day30.jpg) I’ve never had personal friends who managed to keep in line with the NaNoWriMo chart- it didn’t even happen in this stock image I found. The only person I’ve ever personally heard of reaching the 50,000 word goal was a professional author, who was probably pumping out a similar number of words regardless of what month it was. Am I alone in this? Do most people manage to reach 50,000 words in thirty days without counting everything they write? I’ve found that if I really push myself, I can produce about 1,000 words every day, but then the project loses all of its fun. I lead a life that is fairly busy but would still be considered to contain an average amount of activity, and every November I find myself wondering how people find the time and energy to do NaNoWriMo “properly”. I like to use NaNoWriMo to make me a better writer and encourage me to write more than I usually would, no matter how many projects the 50,000 word count is spread over. I think that the point of NaNoWriMo is to help your writing and so if this is what works for me, I’m going to keep doing it. I know that I’m more likely to keep up NaNoWriMo for the entire month if I do ten 5,000 word projects, so why shouldn’t I? If you take part in NaNoWriMo, how do you do it, and how do you keep yourself writing when life takes up all of your time?

titleMy top makeup tip? Paint your face green!
body![20170809_102114.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXei9ks9PvafNAZGfXqorjV9VPnmUy2UR5XGwPg2cS3no/20170809_102114.jpg) This is what I look like this morning. Makeup-wise, all I'm wearing is eyebrow pencil and concealer- GREEN concealer! I don't always wear makeup, but sometimes the mood strikes me and when it does, green concealer is the first thing I reach for. I'm not wearing foundation, powder, or a concealer that matches my skin tone, but I'm really happy with how my skin looks! I can feel quite self-conscious about my skin's redness and if you're aware of the colour wheel, you'll know that green is perfect for neutralising that red. I'm not wearing much, and only have it on some parts of my face. If you don't like to wear makeup or don't feel like wearing much today but would like a little skincare boost, I would definitely recommend this! Every brand that I've tried so far has worked equally well, so now I just buy whichever one is the best value. Maybe you'll disagree with me in the comments, but I don't think my face looks green at all! I really like the way my skin looks, and when I tell people I'm wearing green makeup, they can't believe it because they can't see any green on my face. Though I might be up for giving that Wicked Witch of the West look a try some time... A lot of people who wear makeup like to keep it light during the summer, so let me know what you like to wear!

titleTrying to get through life with a broken washing machine
body![laundry-413688_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQPwXdzCYBL7pad2b4Ta6gREi572girArvn7v5w5vv8yn/laundry-413688_1920.jpg) My washing machine has been broken for about a week and a half now. I'm so jealous of the person stuck in the washing machine... they're wearing a full outfit AND more clothes in the machine. I discovered the washing machine was broken when I was already pretty low on clothes. I tried putting a load of laundry on, and was then informed by my housemate that the machine didn't work. Thanks for the heads up. Called the letting agency, they'll send someone out on X day. Fine, at least I know how long I need to last. Now to figure out how to last... For a few days, I was okay. Maybe I wore that pair of jeans a bit longer than I should have, maybe my boyfriend is missing a few pairs of underwear... But for the most part, I've made it through looking normal! There was the frantic searching for clothes that could be worn together even if they didn't match, and wearing clothes that hadn't been worn in a long time and probably didn't fit perfectly. It's amazing what fashion faux pas you can explain away by saying you overslept. Today, I'm wearing a black nightdress. I put my leather jacket over it and felt like an alternative version of Jennifer Garner in 13 Going on 30. Luckily I can hide inside, but work tomorrow is going to be a challenge. The washing machine will hopefully be fixed tomorrow (just in time). If it isn't, I may have to resort to more panic buying, because unfortunately there are no laundrettes near me. I don't normally do posts like this, it's more of a life update than a kind of article, but I thought I might as well try out something different!

If it isn't, I may have to resort to more panic buying, because unfortunately there are no laundrettes near me.\n\nI don't normally do posts like this, it's more of a life update than a kind of article, but I thought I might as well try out something different!",

titleAugust
bodyHappy August, everyone. I love to celebrate the smallest of holidays in order to make every day feel special, and celebrating the start of August has made for a lovely day. ![20615473_1657657017579324_1945369815_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaAnnxezBFhYBMNAn9WuFQUPUxfe7yLEForVskRJwoFjV/20615473_1657657017579324_1945369815_o.jpg) Irish weather is volatile at best, so it was pure luck that today was sunny. I work indoors so only get to enjoy the sun on my days off, and anyone who has been to Ireland will tell you that an opportunity to absorb some vitamin D is not to be missed! This is me on the other side of the camera when I took the first picture. ![20616243_1657657040912655_934447700_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRy7NqoCyzFahHdfhbuMVuf1d433nKqpff6eW759Bk6ur/20616243_1657657040912655_934447700_o.jpg) Maybe it's because of my earlier post about appearances, but I had no problem taking a photo I knew I'd be putting online without being able to see it- the sun was in my eyes so I just took a click and decided that'd do. That level of comfort was really nice, and being as mellow as the day itself feels really fitting. I live in a small city which means that I have the best of both in terms of things to do as well as access to nature. I'm from the countryside and while I love the hustle and bustle of city life, there was nothing I wanted to do today more than lie on the grass. ![20597773_1657656997579326_1784332984_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXn86S6P9nBFvssDqPsyukjCUEagegpbpGZkoERNCWRc3/20597773_1657656997579326_1784332984_o.jpg) I really like this photo, because even though it's very simple, it says a lot to me. The ring is a symbol of my adopted home and the way I'm wearing it is a sign that I'm in love. My nails are colourful but short and chipped, but the sunshine has a wonderful way of making shabby things look beautiful. This photo really touches me for reasons I can't quite explain, but I don't want to explain them; I am more than content to bask in its warmth, like I did in the sun when I took it. ![20615182_1657657077579318_1472938597_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfYPSXSYgCEuUXhVwhkNvKtjof1VzEbESmUMatP8GnRhM/20615182_1657657077579318_1472938597_o.jpg) I passed by this disused waterworks on the way home. There are a lot of places in Ireland that are disused, but nicely painted and basically maintained in order to keep them looking nice. It's something I really appreciate about this country; we don't always have the means to keep businesses open or knock down old buildings, but we do what little we can to incorporate what is around us into our communities. I'm hoping that the month of August will be as mellow as this first day. Hopefully there will be more sun, but I will be content if I can keep this sense of peace with me. I hope you're all having a good day and that you have a good month, too.

I love to celebrate the smallest of holidays in order to make every day feel special, and celebrating the start of August has made for a lovely day.\n![20615473_1657657017579324_1945369815_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaAnnxezBFhYBMNAn9WuFQUPUxfe7yLEForVskRJwoFjV/20615473_1657657017579324_1945369815_o.jpg)\nIrish weather is volatile at best, so it was pure luck that today was sunny. I work indoors so only get to enjoy the sun on my days off, and anyone who has been to Ireland will tell you that an opportunity to absorb some vitamin D is not to be missed! This is me on the other side of the camera when I took the first picture.\n![20616243_1657657040912655_934447700_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRy7NqoCyzFahHdfhbuMVuf1d433nKqpff6eW759Bk6ur/20616243_1657657040912655_934447700_o.jpg)\nMaybe it's because of my earlier post about appearances, but I had no problem taking a photo I knew I'd be putting online without being able to see it- the sun was in my eyes so I just took a click and decided that'd do. That level of comfort was really nice, and being as mellow as the day itself feels really fitting.\nI live in a small city which means that I have the best of both in terms of things to do as well as access to nature. I'm from the countryside and while I love the hustle and bustle of city life, there was nothing I wanted to do today more than lie on the grass. \n![20597773_1657656997579326_1784332984_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXn86S6P9nBFvssDqPsyukjCUEagegpbpGZkoERNCWRc3/20597773_1657656997579326_1784332984_o.jpg)\nI really like this photo, because even though it's very simple, it says a lot to me. The ring is a symbol of my adopted home and the way I'm wearing it is a sign that I'm in love. My nails are colourful but short and chipped, but the sunshine has a wonderful way of making shabby things look beautiful. This photo really touches me for reasons I can't quite explain, but I don't want to explain them; I am more than content to bask in its warmth, like I did in the sun when I took it.\n![20615182_1657657077579318_1472938597_o.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfYPSXSYgCEuUXhVwhkNvKtjof1VzEbESmUMatP8GnRhM/20615182_1657657077579318_1472938597_o.jpg)\nI passed by this disused waterworks on the way home. There are a lot of places in Ireland that are disused, but nicely painted and basically maintained in order to keep them looking nice. It's something I really appreciate about this country; we don't always have the means to keep businesses open or knock down old buildings, but we do what little we can to incorporate what is around us into our communities.\nI'm hoping that the month of August will be as mellow as this first day. Hopefully there will be more sun, but I will be content if I can keep this sense of peace with me. I hope you're all having a good day and that you have a good month, too.",

titleStarting a new project with mental illness
bodyI've struggled with mental illness for a number of years. I'm a creative person, and have seen, time and time again, the same battle between wanting to take on a new project and feeling unable to do it due to illness. I have seen this battle both in myself and in many close friends. Even now, I'm struggling to write this article, and am going through the process you see below. This is currently my second attempt- I started post this weeks ago but struggled to complete it. Sometimes I find that seeing things listed out makes them easier to organise mentally, similar to how people sometimes feel a relief when they are given a name or diagnosis for something affecting them. Once again, I'm at the start of a new project, but am finding myself stunted by the things I'll list below. I'm hoping that writing this list will help me to organise things in my own head, and will potentially help others to do the same- seeing my problems in a list helps me to pin down what exactly I need to tackle, and might help you to put a name to something that's been bothering you at the back of your mind. ![mental-health-1420801_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYrV4KpKxdbpJiscNDD5L4rp2aPwJWHUrJTgra6dD5JXT/mental-health-1420801_1920.jpg) **The idea** I have a lot of ideas. I have so many ideas that I have notebooks, bullet points, drafts and outlines all over the place. Not too many finished products, though. I find that I have a lot of enthusiasm about the idea itself and the finished product, but lose my energy quite quickly. I want to have my idea in fruition as soon as possible, and that isn't how the real world works. **Starting the project** I normally start a project as soon as I can, running on the energy the idea has given me. I'll get really oganised, plan everything out, and... probably lose steam. (Am I going to give an internal chuckle every time I mention steam because it feels like a Steem pun? You bet) For example, when I first tried to write this post, I wrote about half the introduction, and listed out all of the titles for the other paragraphs. I know my own limits, and know that if I don't plan everything out in that first sitting, I'll forget what I had planned and am more likely to abandon it. *It's important to find methods that work for you.* For me, one of those methods is outlining a project as much as possible so that it's easier to come back to it later. **The first hurdle** Once the planning is done, it's time to actually do the work. My brain always seems to have an issue with this. Sometimes my first burst of energy will help me to get a little bit done, but at some point I will run out of energy. Part of me needs to realise that this is normal, and that if I can't write an entire article/story/play in one sitting, that is more than reasonable. However, another part of me needs to remember that while a play is too much to write in one go, an article probably isn't. It's important to set yourself a realistic goal that you can achieve but that will push you a bit. I always find NaNoWriMo helpful because I'm actively tracking how many words I've written every day, and have both a daily and a long-term goal. Mental illness has a habit of twisting thoughts that you've already had, and making you go back on decisions you've already made. I find that if I set myself hard parameters that I am not allowed to change when I'm not feeling as well, I'm more likely to actually complete a project. **Taking a break** Self-care can be a tricky concept. I have a very bad habit of indulging myself in the name of self-care, and that isn't the best way to take care of myself. Self-care is not about instant gratification, it's about making healthy choices. When working on a project, I will often not push myself hard enough, or take too many breaks in the name of self-care. Breaks are important, and I would urge you not to become stressed or overwork yourself- but also keep in mind that things won't always be easy, and you will have to really push yourself, probably more often than you'd like. By all means, take a break- but only when you really need it. Don't let a dip in energy or focus distract you from what you want to get done. **Can't get back into it** This is why badly-timed breaks are a problem. If you're going to take a break, *decide in advance when the break is over.* I don't just mean taking a lunch break and telling yourself you'll start working again in an hour; if you decide you want to leave something alone for a while so that you can come back to it with a fresh outlook, decide *in advance* when exactly you're going to return to the project. With mental illness, it can be tempting to tell yourself that you'll return to the project when you're in the right mindset, but this is such a broad idea that you can easily procrastinate by telling yourself that you're not quite ready yet. Set a date to return to your project, and no matter what your mood is, check in with the project and see what you can do. Even if your return isn't as productive as you'd hoped, at least you came back- which is more than I can say about dozens of projects I've started. **Starting other projects** I am very guilty of this. I'll "take a break" from *(ahem, abandon)* a project because the rush of energy is gone, and then get a rush of energy for something else, another idea I've just had, or something that inspires me. Like other people I know with mental illness, I am often driven by strong bursts of energy, because I don't know when I'll have the energy to start a project again. What I would recommend (both to you, dear reader, and myself) is to write down the project and *nothing else*- I say this because writing down what you want to do and outlining the whole thing, ie. starting the whole cycle again, are two different things. If your idea is good, then it will still be good when you come back to it after finishing what you're currently working on. **Second attempt** I'll admit, I often don't get this far. Or if I do, it's a very lame attempt in an effort to make myself feel better about not doing more work earlier. But here's the thing- if I'm working on something to alleviate my conscience, then once again I'm being driven by a strong burst of emotion. Not the best way to do work. Obviously you're not going to be unfeeling about projects close to your heart, but it's important that your motivation is coming from somewhere more stable than random bursts of positive or negative energy. Like I said before, find a method that works for you- something that will keep you motivated and consistently working, rather than going back and forth between excitement and abandonment. For writing, I find word count goals very helpful. **Oh my God, have I actually finished something?** This doesn't always happen, so take a moment to be proud of what you've accomplished. You did this! Now, depending on the project, it's going to take more than two attempts, but with small, regular efforts, you will reach the finish line! Now, one last step- *look over what you've done!* I am notorious for not proof-reading written work, or closing something as soon as I've finished it. I've known other people who have felt that their mental illness makes it impossible for them to look over what they've done because they will hate it or feel that it's never good enough. But you have done so well to get this far, you *can* complete this last step! If you need to take a few hours or even a day or two before you give the project one last look, that's fine, but remember- give yourself a solid time frame. If you say you're going to do one last run-through tomorrow, *do it tomorrow*. It's one last push, but that's the beauty of it- *it's the last*. Once you do that, you're done! You completed something and you can proudly see (and show others, if you'd like) what you have accomplished! I wrote this article for myself as much as for anyone else. I know that I'll look back on this in the future when I find myself stuck halfway through a project. My top tips would be to do small, regular amounts of work, set strict time frames, and not use unhealthy bursts of energy as your source of motivation. If you have any tips you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them! If you ever find yourself wanting to do something, but finding that you just can't seem to get it done, come back to this article and see if taking a moment to assess what stage you're at helps. I hope it does!

Don't let a dip in energy or focus distract you from what you want to get done.\n\n**Can't get back into it**\nThis is why badly-timed breaks are a problem. Even if your return isn't as productive as you'd hoped, at least you came back- which is more than I can say about dozens of projects I've started.\n\n**Starting other projects**\nI am very guilty of this. I'll \"take a break\" from *(ahem, abandon)* a project because the rush of energy is gone, and then get a rush of energy for something else, another idea I've just had, or something that inspires me. If your idea is good, then it will still be good when you come back to it after finishing what you're currently working on.\n\n**Second attempt**\nI'll admit, I often don't get this far. \n\n**Oh my God, have I actually finished something?**\nThis doesn't always happen, so take a moment to be proud of what you've accomplished. You completed something and you can proudly see (and show others, if you'd like) what you have accomplished!\n\n\n\nI wrote this article for myself as much as for anyone else. I hope it does!",

titleTwenty films to watch when: you want a lighthearted comedy
bodyA lot of the time, I find myself wanting to watch a film and knowing what genre I want, but not being able to find something specific to watch. I'll spend ages scrolling through Netflix, often getting bored and just doing something else. I decided I'm going to make a few lists like this so that if you're like me and you want to watch a lighthearted comedy/ visually stunning film/ action full of explosions, there'll be a whole list waiting for you, hopefully making your decision a bit easier. So in no particular order, here are twenty films you might like if you want to watch something funny that doesn't get too deep and doesn't take much effort to follow. I'll be doing a "witty comedies" list soon, so keep an eye out for that! If there are any other lists you'd like me to make, please let me know! https://pixabay.com/en/dog-popcorn-cinema-movies-watch-2367414/ **1. The 40 Year Old Virgin** The film that gave Steve Carrell his breakthrough. Good cast, and silly humour without feeling stupid. **2. The Young Offenders** This is an Irish film that came out quite recently, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's based on a true story of two teenagers trying to find treasure in the form of cocaine washed up on a beach. It's as crazy as it sounds. **3. What We Do in the Shadows** A mockumentary about vampires in New Zealand, really original stuff with a low-budget feel that adds to its "realness", which in turn adds to its humour. **4. Airplane!** An absolute classic, which you can tune in and out of and still find hilarious. As long as you know they're trying to land a plane, you can watch it at any point. Full of running gags and one-liners, really great stuff. **5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail** This is my favourite Monty Python film, and honestly, it's nice to see a medieval comedy that doesn't feature Robin Hood. **6. 13 Going on 30** Funny in the sweetest way, and features "Thriller" choreography. What's not to love? **7. Anchorman** Its fight scene is still inspiring parodies by real newscasters- that's how you know it's a classic. **8. Anchorman 2** Just thought I'd throw it in. Some say that sequels can't measure up to their originals, but I don't think that's the case here. **9. Step Brothers** I'm featuring Will Ferrell a lot in this list, but he's good at making you laugh without having to think too much about what he's saying. And we all love a bit of John C. Reilly, right? **10. Hot Fuzz** A dynamic duo fighting crime and getting a Cornetto along the way. **11. Shaun of the Dead** As you can see, I'm putting two out of the Cornetto trilogy in this list- I haven't seen the third one (The World's End) but I'll go out on a limb and say that if you like the other two, you'd probably like that as well. **12. The Simpsons Movie** It's a big, long episode of The Simpsons. What more could you want? **13. What Women Want** So maybe this would go into a rom-com list if I did one of those, but I also think this film is really funny whether or not you follow the plot. Men! Haha! Am I right, ladies? **14. Zoolander** You can just look up from your phone at any given time while this is playing, pause, and laugh at Ben Stiller's facial expression. **15. School of Rock** I'd been avoiding putting kids' films in this list up until now because I was going to save them for their own list, but this belongs here. Jack Black in his prime, hilarious kids, and most importantly, rock 'n' roll. **16. Shrek** A cinematic classic that needs no explanation. **17. Young Frankenstein** Anything with Gene Wilder is good, but this is is a classic that combines a good physical comedy and a great script. **18. Daddy Day Care** No matter how many films I watch, this will always be one of the funniest. Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin in charge of a bunch of four year olds? Sold. **19. Kung Fury** Only half an hour long, but absolutely hilarious. Contains every '80s trope you can think of... No, really, they're ALL in there. **20. Borat** Like many of the films on this list, you can tune in and out and still find this film funny. Each scene stands on its own, which is what you want when you're too tired to follow a plot. There are, of course, so many more films that I find funny, but I plan on making more lists, so they'll probably come up in the future! Let me know of any films you'd recommend, and if there are any other lists you'd like to see!

titleMy dogs got a new blanket
bodyMy dogs have multiple baskets in the house (they like to follow us around and be part of the action), but their main one is in the kitchen. Every so often, they get treated to a new blanket- usually because the previous one is too smelly or full of holes. As is so often the case, I got this news through pictures from my mum because I don't visit home too often. I said in my very first post that these updates always lift my spirits and that I'd share them on Steemit to hopefully lift your spirits too! ![image-0-02-04-2fa933fe468cc96d1d540cace3bf28f19851a83c91a350b4dfbdfbb3510cc1be-V.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNdSHEs4hqruD9xpNBPe4ZphCLHXfdF4JMVTvBoGvF4M8/image-0-02-04-2fa933fe468cc96d1d540cace3bf28f19851a83c91a350b4dfbdfbb3510cc1be-V.jpg) Tigger loved the new blanket so much that he had to have a lie down on it before it was put into the basket. Look at that expression: pure bliss. ![image-0-02-04-f8587e7010bccc25c870fe90ce1be42b196c28497671f4569d658c259c709800-V.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWre8yeFMvTHhb6vEUFWxa6NShk8Vg53FUcCqrFmVJd5F/image-0-02-04-f8587e7010bccc25c870fe90ce1be42b196c28497671f4569d658c259c709800-V.jpg) The blanket finally made it into the basket, but Tigger was so excited that he decided to get into the basket before the blanket went in. Louie was a bit more sensible. ![image-0-02-04-bcd9ecb04cac78a7c5f383474acbffd4b6ace8fdfac44c64c3e3db768e551120-V.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUdeKPzRK7tMZihJY5nB4yELPk2Ua4LAGu2vVxMaXuuXd/image-0-02-04-bcd9ecb04cac78a7c5f383474acbffd4b6ace8fdfac44c64c3e3db768e551120-V.jpg) He stayed like this for a long time. ![image-0-02-04-27ef5e8fdf45428f8e1c59e415276355cc1a61d9d00f2ef05fefbc0c06618071-V.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSppCtup4DTsbtHd24bfhCiLRTSMxkbDHX5KxjKEV5gJZ/image-0-02-04-27ef5e8fdf45428f8e1c59e415276355cc1a61d9d00f2ef05fefbc0c06618071-V.jpg) After all the excitement died down, they cuddled up together on top of the blanket and listened and watched while the family went about their business. My cosy little boys are cosy once again!
