| title | Critically Endangered Woylie |
| body | You may have heard of the Bettong, which are common along the coast of QLD, Northern NSW and Tasmania. Meet the Bettong's western cousin the Woylie or the Brush Tailed Bettong. Scientific name - Bettongia penicillata https://vimeo.com/188055143 This species cornered in a strong hold in the Southern Dry sclerophyll forests of Western Australia. For a species to be recorded as critically endangered by the UICN a species must lose 90% of its population in under 10 years. For the Woylie this reduction in population was been due to the introduction of foxes and feral cats into these dry forest habitats. Description The Woylie is a small Nocturnal rabbit sized Marsupial Macropod. Covering its back is a light sandy brown fur that darkens into a black on the tail. This species has a white, grey creamy under belly and hind legs. Standing upright like a kangaroo to bound and travel distances, but capable of leaning onto all fours to forage for food. The body grows to 300-380mm, with a prehensile tail that grows to 290-360mm. This tail can be used grasp and gather grasses and sticks for nesting material, much the same as a monkeys tail would be used to grasp branches. Weight 1.1 - 1.6kg Life Span 4-6 years https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5qq8U5XQA8 Behaviour A nocturnal species uses the darkness of night and cool tempreters to forage and hunt down prey. They are a solitary species that cover a home range of 20 hectares, having 3 - 4 usable nests in that range. Woylies build well-concealed domed nests made from shredded bark and grasses. Habitat Western Australia's Dry Sclerophyll forests and woodlands with lots of cover. This habitat is home to a number of endangered and threatened species that share the land with the Woylie. Tammar Wallaby Numbat Red Tailed Phascogale Brush Tailed Phascogale Quokka Western Pygmy Possum Food This species forages for bulbs, insects, seeds, resin and underground fungi. Breeding The Woylie sexually matures early in life at 5-6 months old, breeding all year round this species can have 2-3 litters each year. Like Macropods such as wallabies and kangaroos, Woylies are pregnant all year round. The embryo stays dormant until the pouch is empty. The mother gives birth to 1 joey per litter, who remains in the pouch for 14 weeks, suckling at foot for up to 4 weeks. Threats Introduced Foxes and cats have decimated the Woylie's population. All three species are nocturnally active, this is a constant threat to the Woylie who stand defenseless against introduced predators. Land and forest clearing posses a second significant threat to the species. This species is only located in such a small location in Western Australia, more pressure on their habitat will result in a further decline of the species. Help Right now as we speak a feral cat and fox fence is being implemented around the woylie's habitat. This aims to prevent anymore unnecessary deaths from introduced species. Aiding the species populations recovery, as well as a habitat that can be carefully studied. You can Volunteer Up Vote and share this article |

| title | The Duck Billed Platypus |
| body | Mysterious and elusive the Australian Platypus is an incredible mammal. No it isnt the result of a beaver and a duck making a baby, it is a unique species of its own. https://vimeo.com/65419497 Very little is known about these native Australian animals but incredibly it is one of only 5 mammals that still lay eggs similar to a bird or reptile. The Platypus does though secret milk just like every other mammal species like you or me. This means a platypus is a monotreme, an egg laying mammal. Platypus lay their eggs in a burrow, in the sides of river banks. After the eggs hatch the baby platypus are completely dependent on their mother for milk and protection. The baby Platypus are called puggles and are hatched completely hairless. Venom glands like a snake, male platypus have two venomous spurs on their hind legs, the venom when contacted with humans is excruciating, but has not caused death. Most mammals only have one or two layers of fur to cope with the weather of their environment, platypus have 7 whole layers of brown fur with plenty of loose scruff to store fat, this means they can live in frozen rivers that have been snowed over with no worries. http://www.themercury.com.au/news/tasmania/icy-dip-for-sturdy-platypus-in-tasmanias-great-western-tiers/news-story/e385c71dd40b58ba74f1b2840322df8e Platypus have a unique bill, it acts as an electrode sensor that picks up movements of all its favourite foods; shrimp, crayfish, and other invertebrates. The bill also senses disturbances and movements that are in and around the body of water it resides in. This ability makes them very good at avoiding predators but also very difficult to spot in the wild. https://vimeo.com/165537788 https://vimeo.com/49644787 The species is also nocturnal feeding up to 9 hours a day. foraging along the creek beds, and digging through debris like fallen branches. Most Platypus sightings occur very early in the morning while the animals are finishing up feeding. https://vimeo.com/132186094 https://vimeo.com/107557257 Habitats run along the entire east coast of Australia into Tasmania following the mountain ranges, but doesnt span further west than the inside boarder of Queensland. Found in creeks, rivers, dams, most moving water estuaries, though they are sensitive to contaminants, run off, deforestation, and cattle or live stock bank trampling. Opera house traps claim more wild Platypus lives than the rest of the other impacts, as they catch Platypus chasing crayfish and shrimp caught in those traps, and unfortunately drown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3Lxgb_dlvQ The species is most active in colder months from May into October, as they look for a breeding partner in those months and will trek through many river systems to find a male territory suitable to lay eggs in. Here are some realistic pictures of what the average person might see in the wild. |

| title | Marijuana the unfortunate owl killer |
| body | Most people have really appreciated the recent legalization of pot for medicinal and leisure purpose use. But this new legally farmed product has been the lead link in the causation of Owls. Yes thats right, marijuana farms are killing Owls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zznRtrHVRY These animals are nocturnal meaning they hunt and fly about in the dark hours of the night. So not every common person sees an owl or the effects they have on their local environment. But owls have certainly noticed the human impacts on their environment. Owls are coming up second best two farms because of their high use of vermin poisons. Farms in general need to control critters like, rats and mice so they dont reduce or defect precious produce. Though long time agricultural farmers have cottoned on to how damaging open baiting can be for all animals, marijuana farmers havnt understood the damages of using pesticides. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQNbWKUjjYk Owls prodominantly feed on rodents or small mammals. The problem occurs after a rodent has consumed a poison and is deleriously taking its last unconcious steps, down swoops an owl t pick off an easy meal. Then after the rodent is ingested the owl suffers the same effects as the rat and succumbs to a slow painful death. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VGNWP3z0Lc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc_WgaNcWms |

| title | My opinion of the success of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games |
| body | I personally applied for a job on the Commonwealth Games because I expected to be part of an awsome well prepared machine that was ganna make magic happen in my local city. My position was working with the Commonwealth Games Associations AKA the Teams officials and big cheeses and athletes. Was proud and very excited when getting this particular role. Training for this position was like working with people who never read the brief of what the role was. I was bored out of my mind, listening to trainers tell the same information I had learnt by reading the briefs and the online training. Painful to say the most. Mistakes I found The venues were out door venues such as swimming and volley ball, and we hosted the event in the most rainy month of the year for the Gold Coast. Just this time in march last year Brisbane had record damaging floods in torential rains. The fact that we had advertised the Gold Coast to only rain 46 days a year on the coast like it was ganna be sunny and beautiful was a shame. I dont think that reflected well on the international scale. It wasnt just my positions training that had gone poorly apparently. The drivers for the mega event had little to no experence driving routes on the Gold Coast and had to be glued to their gps app, WHICH CRASHED alot. Teams were sent to the wrong end of Queensland and missed their events, and athletes and officals were lost on their way too and from the airport and the village. - Unacceptable- drivers who had told me all they did on their shift was wait around for 8 hours on their phones. Learn where you have to drive dumb asses. Organisation skills of departments really lacked, and didnt cooperate. simple tasks of booking cars for athletes or officials simply didnt run smoothly. Things went missing in the village, money, clothes, personal belongings. The staff for house cleaning were all spannish or mexican which was a communication break down in itself. The village and games are supose to be english speaking. Business was put under stress when locals were told to stay off the road. Transporting attendies to venues failed because the transport dropped them off to late. There was no time to buy food from local business, and by the time the event finished businesses were closed or attendies just herded onto buses home. The aboriginal protests of the Stolenwealth games - If you dont understand the benefit economically of mega events than you simply look ignorant and rude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YyQv7vQOOQ Native aboriginal inclusion of their culture is sacred and special, i think Australia needs to be proud to show this culture off, and not let two cultures continue to divide. They are a unique people, with deep rooted connections to the earth, they need more respect than theyre given. |

| title | What do you Get when a Polar Bear and a Grizzly bear have a cub? |
| body | No this is not a joke, inter species breading is legitimate and has occured numerous times in the past Examples of this include: lions and tigers breeding = liger or donkey and zebra = zedonk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM9cV1fF518 But in these cases the new born is sterile and connot then reproduce to form an entirely new species from combining the species. TO answer the question of a polar bear and a grizzly bear making a cub - you get a Pizzly bear or Grolar Bear. A german zoo ( Osnabrück) currently has two Pizzly or Grolar bears on display for tourists and scientists to view and study. Fascinatingly these bears are not the only Pizzly bears in the wild. Weird bears have started appearing in northern Canada where the two species have been seen in the same habitats together. These bears have had DNA checks on their fur and found some of these Pizzly Bears are second generation. THIS MEANS A NEW SPECIES IS BEING CREATED RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR EYES - evolution in the procees. | title | Tree Kangaroos WTF Kangaroos in Trees???? |
| body | There are over 60 different species of kangaroo species - and not al species belong to australia. Papua New Guinea and New Zealand are both homes to these macropods. Bet you didnt know That Now your saying they live in trees too??? Correct - Australia has 2 main species of tree kangaroo, but they are also home to several species in Papua New Guinea. All of Australias Tree living Macropods live in the Daintree Forest in Northern Queensland. These species have long tails and paws adept to climb. They still have pouches and raise their young with in them, and they can still hop down to the forest floor and hop about like the normal kangaroos. Scientific name: Dendrolagus These kangaroos are threatened by logging, dogs, and foxes. A new threat is thought to be a weed, or fruit or perhaps cat urine that is causing blindness in these already endangered animals. |
