Eternal September keeps chasing out the  best who are then followed by the rest with the process now repeating. Although Facebook is one of the biggest companies on earth,  few think it is cool – your mom is on it. Meanwhile, Reddit, itself a  product of an exodus from Digg, has brought to the forefront a serious  problem, private sector censorship of free speech. The duo of <a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-larimer-0a367089\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Larimer</a> and <a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/nedscott\" rel=\"noopener\">Ned Scott</a>, the former a techy, the latter from the world of finance, think they have a solution, <a href=\"https://steemit.com/\">Steemit</a>.  The blockchain-powered platform is a mixture between medium and reddit  where users are paid for voting and posting in a new currency called  steem, currently valued at around $0.23 per unit. Steemit users just  received the first payout, $1.3 million in total, but can this really  work? </p>\n<h2>The incentives of steemit’s design</h2>\n<p>There has been much debate on the use of money to  incentivise intrinsic behaviour, such as studying, donations, or healthy  activity. The jury is still out with one <a href=\"https://www0.gsb.columbia.edu/mygsb/faculty/research/pubfiles/5133/GneezyMeierRey_JEP.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">study</a> concluding that the effects of monetary incentivization on intrinsically motivated behaviour, basically, depends: </p>\n<blockquote>“A considerable and growing body of evidence suggests that  the effects of incentives depend on how they are designed, the form in  which they are given (especially monetary or nonmonetary), how they  interact with intrinsic motivations and social motivations, and what  happens after they are withdrawn. Incentives do matter, but in various  and sometimes unexpected ways.” </blockquote>\n<p>The incentives of streemit’s design were described by Larimer, speaking to CoinTelegraph In eight points: </p>\n<blockquote>No transaction fees.<br />\n Mandatory spending.<br />\n Liquidity rewards to bootstrap market trading.<br />\n Everyone who provides value should get a stake.<br />\n Don't ask for money, ask for time and energy.<br />\n Build value for people who don't buy in or use the platform (readers).<br />\n Natural marketing and SEO through producing content.<br />\n Make it fun.<br />\n  </blockquote>\n<p>Much of it is self-descriptive, but we asked for an explanation on “mandatory spending”. Larimer says: </p>\n<blockquote>“Under Steem, it doesn't matter if you vote or not, funds  will be distributed to someone. This forces people to focus on directing  funds to the best cause, rather than ​*if*​ they should fund something.  The result of mandatory spending is that the platform gradually changes  hands from those who do nothing to those who contribute.” </blockquote>\n<h2>Distributing the funds</h2>\n<p>The monetary aspects of the platform are somewhat complex.  First of all, it all runs and is stored on a blockchain, so it has  miners. Second, it uses a mixture of proof of work mining, proof of  stake and delegated proof of stake. To make it a bit more fun, it has  three currencies. The “core” currency is Steem, which is highly inflationary  with steem units doubling every year. Many, therefore, convert it to  Steem Power (SP) which locks the currency in a stake for two years. Then  there is Steem Dollars which aims to be pegged to the US Dollar. There is an even more complex method of distributing the  funds which constantly inflate. 90% of the inflated funds are given to  SP holders, the other 10% is shared: </p>\n<blockquote>“The accounting is complex, but fundamentally this is no  different than Bitcoin. Bitcoin has allocated 10% of its market cap each  year to pay for miners. Steem allocates 10% of its market cap to pay  for curation (voters), posting, mining, block production, and  liquidity.” </blockquote>\n<p>The 10% is allocated to four groups, “1% block producers,  1% liquidity, 6% authors and 2% curators,” according to Larimer’s  estimate. There is no halving, so the currency continues to inflate at  10%, effectively, indefinitely. “It has really gained traction. New users are signing up  every day. There is a constantly growing number of active users,” says  Larimer with more than 700 active users yesterday and 20,000 pageviews a  day. </p>\n<h2>Reddit’s heavy censorship vs. steem’s censorship resistance</h2>\n<p>One attraction, especially in light of reddit’s heavy  censorship by both admins and moderators may be steem’s censorship  resistance. As all is stored on a blockchain, unless 51% of node  operators, miners and stakeholders agree, no content can be removed.  That, of course, has two edges. After a terrorist shooting in Orlando, <a href=\"https://cointelegraph.com/news/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3639181/Facebook-Reddit-accused-censorship-pages-discussing-Orlando-carnage-deleted-wake-terrorist-attack.html\" rel=\"noopener\">heavy censorship</a>  was implemented by reddit moderators, especially r/news which went so  far as to remove a post giving information on blood donations. This  brought the bubbling reddit censorship issue to mainstream attention,  but only for just a day with no action taken. Reddit admins have taken a position that moderators can do  whatever they wish in their own subreddits. The problem is of course  that name domains are hot property as r/news retains a structural  advantage over r/news2 due to most newcomers typing the former. That opens our great public spaces where we congregate to  insidious overt and covert manipulation which may provide entities with  powerful political or financial advantage at, perhaps, the expense of  the common good. Many, therefore, think that reddit is ripe for disruption  as new space seems to have opened to figure out a more equitable way of  organizing our public discussions. </p>\n<h2>Is steemit the solution?</h2>\n<p>Whether steemit is the solution is not clear. The way it is  currently organized seems to be limited to self-posts, rather than  direct link sharing from the title. Moreover, the administrators of the  website can, if they wish, remove content or comments, but they would  remain on the blockchain and anyone can set up a website to reflect the  blockchain just as there are a number of block explorers. This may be one way to address the other edge of free  speech. Content that is fundamentally in breach of all or almost all  values, although it may be on the backbone, stored on the blockchain,  would not be displayed on the frontend. Nedd Scott, CEO and Co-founder at Steemit, described his ambitions to CT as follows: </p>\n<blockquote>“Our goal is to give [social media] back to the people by  making it a public resource and a utility owned by the people.  Ultimately the people who have say over Steem are the token holders and  that’s what will drive its direction in the long run.” </blockquote>\n<p>From the voting algorithm to funding distribution, token  market price, monetary incitivization, the use of the blockchain itself,  there are many complex interactions, combining an instant market  reaction through price, financial carrots and sticks through voting, as  well as monetary reward for product creation together with a digital  currency element. Whether this will work in its current incarnation remains  to be seen, but it is one of the more unique attempts to try and solve  the decades long social media problem with the results of the  experiment, whether failure or success, undoubtedly closely watched by  many.  </p>",

In the age of multiple social media  platforms, many of them entrenched players, how will new users react to  Steemit? </p>\n<h2>Background of Steemit</h2>\n<p>Steemit is a relatively new company, founded in early 2016 by <a href=\"https://angel.co/ned-scott\" rel=\"noopener\">Ned Scott</a>  and Daniel Larimer. Ned Scott earlier worked for Gellert Global Group, a  family-owned private equity group which holds many North American food  companies. Daniel Larimer is the founder of Bitshares, which has the 11th largest market capitalization amongst all cryptocurrencies. </p>\n<h2>The concept</h2>\n<p>Steemit is powered by blockchain technology and uses a new  cryptocurrency to reward users who upload articles, images, commentary,  etc. Other ways users can get paid is through sourcing and  up-voting popular content. The earlier a person up-votes a post that  becomes popular, the more is the reward. Users are paid half in 'Steem Power' (a vesting currency) and half in Steem Dollars, which can be exchanged for US Dollars. CTO <a href=\"https://angel.co/dlarimer\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan Larimer</a> says to CoinTelegraph: </p>\n<blockquote>“Steemit is a brand new way to recognize contributors  online, especially those who join our community early and stay long  term. New users will be given a portion of Steem when they sign up and  those who initiate or improve the quality of discussions, through  persuasiveness, clarity, grammar and formatting, will be upvoted faster  and more appropriately rewarded.” </blockquote>\n<h2>How is multiple account creation prevented?</h2>\n<p>One of the banes of rewarding users for posting is that people try to game the system by creating multiple accounts. These accounts can be used to post/vote multiple times and thereby manipulate the popularity of posts. Steemit tries to control this by requiring users to register through their Facebook accounts. Steemit is a content aggregator that rewards users in forms  of a new cryptocurrency. Depending on the quality and popularity of a  post, or how early a post is upvoted on, users are paid in forms of  Steem. Although Steemit may be the most sophisticated and  thought-through system to date, the concept of rewarding users for their  posts is not entirely new. As early as 2014, sites such as Bubblews and  Bonzo Me came out with the idea of paying users for generating content. These sites used Paypal to make payments. Bubblews closed down in November 2015. Taringa, Argentina's largest social networking site, tips users in bitcoins for posting and sharing content. This hasn't led to users migrating in droves from Facebook  and other social networking sites. It remains to be seen how successful  Steemit is in attracting users.  </p>",

      "body": "<p>Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life  was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She  was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as  one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef,  took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each  on a high fire.  </p>\n<p>Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs  in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let  them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter,  moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty  minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot  and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a  bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.  </p>\n<p>Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she hastily replied.  </p>\n<p>“Look closer”, he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. </p>\n<p>He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.  </p>\n<p>Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.  </p>\n<p>“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.  </p>\n<p>He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each  faced the same adversity-the boiling water. However, each one reacted  differently. The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in  boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the  thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the  boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the  ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling  water, they changed the water and created something new.  </p>\n<p>“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on  your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee  bean?” </p>",

I deserve to live.” </p>\n<p>He also grabbed a parachute and  jumped.</p>\n<p> The priest looked at the little boy and said, “My son, I’ve lived a  long and full life.       "body": "Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.\n\nHer father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.\n\nHe then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.\n\nAfter twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.\n\nHe then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”\n\n“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.\n\n“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.\n\n“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.\n\nHe then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.\n\nHowever, each one reacted differently.\n\nThe potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.\n\nThe egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.\n\nHowever, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.\n\n“Which are you,” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? “\n\nMoral:In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.\n\nWhich one are you?",

And I tell you why!  \n\nHERE ARE MY 10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TRAVEL TO THE PHILIPPINES!\n\n01 | THE PEOPLE\nThe hospitality of Filipinos is incomparable to the rest of the world.\n\nIn my experience, from all the Asians I have met, Filipinos are the most kind and friendly people, extremely welcoming and curious, but also respectful. They always seem happy and smiling, and they love to sing and to dance whenever there is an occasion to celebrate.  \n\n02 | PARADISE BEACHES AND ISLANDS\nPhilippines is one of the largest island groups in the world with 7,107 islands.\n\n Philippines islands and beaches are ... Heaven. Paradise. Amazing. No kidding. I hardly found better beaches in the world than there. The queen of all the beaches is probably White Beach in Boracay, constantly rated as one of the Top 10 beaches of the world. I wouldn't say it's the best one, but certainly the most famous one.\n\nIf you are into white sandy beaches and turquoise crystal-clear waters, you're in the right country. Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands. It's not hard to find your dream beach or a pristine island over there and having it all for yourself...  \n\n03 | SHOPPING\nGet lost in one of the biggest shopping malls in the world.\n\nWhen I noticed all the giant shopping malls in Manila, I had a feeling that Filipinos must be crazy about shopping. Later I figured out that shopping is also a way of family gathering for them. Or as one of my Filipina friends says: \"They come for the air conditioning.\"\n\n \n\nAnyway, shopping in the Philippines can be quite a worthwhile experience. The country is known by many as a great handicraft center. Manila has fantastic shopping opportunities. There are a lot of places to go and it all depends on what you intend to buy, and how much is your budget.  \n\n04 | NATURE, FLORA AND FAUNA\nPhilippines has one of the most diverse wildlife in the world.\n\nPhilippines is home of a diverse range of birds, plants, animals and sea creatures. There are nearly 200 mammal species in the Philippines. The Philippine Tarsier is one of the smallest (and cutest!) species of monkeys in the world. You will find more than 600 species of birds, over 300 species of reptiles and amphibians and at least 400 coral species. From the giant whale shark to the world's smallest fish (Pandaca pygmea), everything you can dream of is united in the beautiful islands of the Philippines. \n\n05 | WEATHER AND CLIMATE\nThe average yearly temperature is around 26.6°C.\n\nLuckily, the weather in the Philippines does not reach a point of extreme hot or extreme cold temperatures, so you can easily adapt to the tropical weather. The best time to go is between November and May.\n\n  06 | FOOD\n\"What? The food?\" You might ask...\n\nWell, I know, Filipino cuisine is not that famous around the globe, and I have to admit, I've never seen a Filipino restaurant outside of the country. BUT that doesn't mean the food tastes bad, not at all! Filipinos love their food and there are a lot of things worth trying! It probably describes it best to say, Filipino food is a mix of Malay, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and American cuisine.\n\n07 | CHEAP ALCOHOL\nA place where Rhum is cheaper than juice.\n\n The prices for booze in Philippines are lower than in most countries I have been. Whenever you order a Rhum with juice, you can be sure to get a good mix as the juice might be more expensive than the Rhum. :)\n\n \n\nDefinitely a must-try is the Red Horse beer! Stronger than normal beer, but nobody actually knows how much stronger, since it's not written on the bottle. In a supermarket, a 0,5l bottle cost 20 pesos (a half US Dollar).\n\nA bottle of Tanduay Rhum cost 1 US Dollar. My favorite Rhum is the Boracay Coconut Rum, watch out for the white bottle, looks like Malibu. It's very delicious mixed with pineapple juice. Get your 0,7l bottle for only 90 Pesos. \n\n08 | MASSAGE, RELAX AND REJUVENATE\nPamper your body with a good massage.\n\n One of the greatest things to do in Philippines is pampering your body with a good massage. Massage places and spas are all over the country, from luxury spas to massage ladies on the beach, you will find them almost everywhere. I can highly recommend trying a Swedish massage, it's a full body massage with oil.\n\nThe photo above is taken in Boracay, where you get a massage for 350 Pesos/hour at most of the places (around 8 US Dollar).  \n\n09 | NO LANGUAGE BARRIER\nOver 90% of the population speaks English.\n\nBig advantage compare to other Asian countries: Almost everybody speaks English in the Philippines, from a 3 year old kid to the 90 year old granny. English is the language of the government, and the preference for written communication, be it in school or business. There are also plenty of English version newspapers and magazines. \n\n10 | THE COLORFUL JEEPNEY\nExplore the country like a local.\n\n\n\nAnother thing you have to do in the Philippines is riding in or on a jeepney! Why? Because it's fun! It's cheap and it's windy, no need of an air conditioner!\nBut what are these jeepneys and where do they come from? The U.S troops left old military jeeps back in WW2. The Filipinos opened the back, added two benches, gave them a colorful and unique design, decorative ornaments, flashy paintings, stars, dots and sometimes even extra lights. And just like that, the Philippine jeepney became a cultural sign of the country. \n\nAn average jeepney can carry 16 - 20 passengers, two up front next to the driver and 14 - 18 seated in the back facing each other on two benches. Well, that's the normal case, but often you'll see an extra body hanging outside or onto the back, or people even occupy the roof. For some reason, mostly these \"outside\" passengers are young and male. You will be surprised, how much a jeepney can carry.\n\nTo get a sense of the place from the local’s perspective and to see how people interact, Jeepneys are a fantastic way to explore the country.       "body": "Steemit is the newest (and youngest) kid on the online social block. In the last two weeks, the Steemit has seen a significant growth (~1000%) – rather impressive feat, to say the least. The site launched in May of this year, but it was only recently that contributor funding was released and the the platform paid equivalent of 1.3 billion of Steemit’s cryptocurrency (or “Steems“).\nHoes does Steemit work?\nIs it paid?\n\nSteemit is currently free to join. The platform is only 3 months old (currently in BETA) so this may that may change.\nWhat’s the idea?\n\nsteemit-feature\n\nIt is simple in theory – give the power to Steemit users to create and curate content on the website and in return they receive a proportional cut of the digital currency, rather than the corporate stakeholders, like we’ve seen with other social sites.\n\nMuch like Bitcoin, the Steemit currency is completely online and offers an exchange rate against the US dollar. There are currently 657 digital currencies tracked by the price index site Coinmarket. On which Steemit has managed to reach close to the top of the list as the third largest in terms of market cap in 3 months! But it’s not the crypto-currency incentive that should be most appealing to content marketers – it’s the potential audience that this platform may present.\nHow is it different to other social media platforms?\n\nIt’s all a popularity contest on Steemit, much like that of Reddit and Facebook. The more engagement you get on a post, the more likely you are to show up in trending feeds. But what makes this platform so unique is that audiences get a share of the cash prizes just by interacting through votes and comments. With cash benefits for writers and more importantly active interactors, there’s a great deal of incentive for audiences to consume content like we’ve never seen before.\nWho contributes content to Steemit currently?\n\nThe content on Steemit isn’t limited to computer and online currency talk either. Users can post any kind of content they want and categorise their content though searchable tags. Topics range from gardening and travel tips to how-to computer coding guides plus everything in between. Don’t take my word for it though, click on the live feed of all the interactions on Steem to see the rate at which it is being adopted by both content creators and readers alike.\n\nsteem-stream\nWhat makes the system tick?\n\nSteemit has developed an engagement system, whereby it isn’t just the users who vote or comment the most, who earn the most amount of currency. Remuneration through interaction is calculated by what posts go viral and who was the first to give these articles the tick of approval. The more popular a post is, the more its voters are rewarded. Therefore it’s in the audience’s interest to read the content and pick out the best of the best. There are already Steemit posts offering formulas and cheat sheets for finding the best content to vote for.
