It is part of the huge Grand Maket layout which is a miniature Russia. I’m straying today from writing about craft beers to write about one of my other loves : model railroads!!\nGrand Maket in St. Petersburg opened its doors in 2012 and just celebrated its 5 year anniversary. It is a spectacular layout showing Russia in three zones (West, Central, East) with countless trains, moving cars and trucks, many buildings and beautiful landscapes.\n![IMG_1639.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbphfS4yh2BQUKXrnp8f6VQLBUAqLxCN5PBMeNectoaNc/IMG_1639.JPG) \n\nGrand Maket is located on Tsvetochnaja str. 16 near the Moskovskiye Vorota metro station. Being old fashioned I always look on a map before I go somewhere in a city I don’t know. I probably could just use my phone to guide me towards my destination but I have no idea how that works. So I look at a map before I leave, write down streets or memorize them and go. Of course this always leads to some problems as signage in Russia is not exactly perfect. Missing street signs, or signs placed in a completely illogical location quite often lead to an extended expedition finding your destination. I’m sure this is one of the reasons both the French and the Germans weren’t able to conquer Russia: they simply got lost.\n![IMG_1733.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNN2zCUVD3YLKSUejMkaYhzdbwJnGTGDvJKFRX123RwZk/IMG_1733.JPG) \n\nOne rusty sign I just happened to notice half way down the street I was supposed to take but that was all they had put out there. Once you get to the building though everything is super modern and beautiful. The layout covers an area of 800 square meters and is the second largest train layout in the world after Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany.\n![IMG_1673.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVMWnhVeW8NpEyDShwcc1oa9sQFCNH5GZPwTb5DveBnDK/IMG_1673.JPG) \n\nEvery 13 minutes the day turns into night which lasts for 2 minutes and you see a beautiful night scenery with lit buildings and trains and trucks running with their lights on. Wireless cars and trucks move around and stop for traffic lights and even use their turn signals. Of course I did all the touristy things like the canal cruise, bus tour, visit Peterhof and the cathedrals.\nThe Hermitage and other museums and palaces I’ll do next time as I just wanted to get to know the city first. I also visited the Grand Maket which is Russia in miniature with many many many trains !!!! I will write about that in my next post but this time I want to tell you about the great Craft Beer culture in St. Petersburg.\n![IMG_1813.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeKvDczHyzH1gtev6BsNLiMFRozujeNxk2JLNzpif1pGw/IMG_1813.JPG)\n\nWhen we arrived at our hotel I noticed an unexpected yet very promising sign next door: “Craft Beer Shop”. For some reason my wife immediately accused me of booking this hotel because of its proximity to this shop. I honestly had no idea but as wives are: they just don’t believe you.\n\nWhen I searched the internet trying to find craft beer bars in St. Petersburg I was not very successful. The bars I found on the web looked quite touristy or had too many side activities to be considered a real craft beer bar. \nSo much to my surprise there was this craft beer shop right next to our hotel. It was tucked away in a somewhat run down courtyard but at least the signage was adequate enough to locate the place where the lack of signage is all too often a big problem in Russia. It even had a small bar to sample and drink the many fine crafts they had for sale. The very helpful and perfect English speaking shop assistant not only helped me pick some fine IPA’s but also gave the addresses of St. Petersburg best craft beer bars. He wrote the names and addresses on a beer coaster (how appropriate) and it turned out to become of the best advice I have ever gotten!!\n\n\nCraft Beer Bar \"Taps&Bottles\" (Тапки) Liteyniy prospekt, 64\n\n![IMG_1363.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWTdAL1UmbyWVUJTxMLyAKDcAReLgfZwyR85ozw7MRd75/IMG_1363.JPG)\n\nThis bar is in a courtyard behind a gate so just ring the bell and they will open it for you. The interior is very attractive and they have a nice selection and knowledgeable staff. The kitchen was recommended to me as Serbian with very good prices. Turns out they only had Serbian style hamburgers and with hamburgers Serbia does not exactly come to mind but boy were they good. Huge burgers that were nice and spicy with big, excellent tasting beef patties. The beer was great too so I can highly recommend this place. For cat lovers like myself: a few doors down is the cat café.
