| title | Itzu triathletes test Belgian aero gel in windtunnel |
| body | *Saleta Castro testing the new gel in Flanders Bike Valley (picture: David Pintens)* At [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) we were invited for the windtunnel test by Ruben Geys at Flanders Bike Valley. The Itzu triathlete by coach Luc Van Lierde performed a test for a Belgian development: aero-gel by Naqi. Apparently this actually made him faster, by how much... they wouldn't tell. Earlier this week Saleta Castro performed the same test. https://www.youtube.com/embed/46KWms8wRnc Ruben Geys' first reaction: "it felt cold, so the cooling effect does work..." At this point the gel is a prototype, but the company ensures that promising results were obtained during the tests. Earlier this week Saleta Castro, winner of Ironman Maastricht, performed the same test: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="nl"> <p dir="ltr" lang="en">Our windtunnel engineer testing a brand new <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SPEEDGEL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#SPEEDGEL</a> on <a href="https://twitter.com/Saletacastro?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Saletacastro</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ITZU?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ITZU</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/bioracer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@bioracer</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/3athlon_BE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@3athlon_BE</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/Ridley_Bikes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Ridley_Bikes</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/lazerhelmets?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@lazerhelmets</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/Naqibelgium?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Naqibelgium</a> <a href="https://t.co/I9GvBa5M9y">pic.twitter.com/I9GvBa5M9y</a></p> <p>— bike valley (@BikeValley) <a href="https://twitter.com/BikeValley/status/993600795156320264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">7 mei 2018</a></p></blockquote> *Original article on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 08/05/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

| title | Bad luck for Hernaert, Jurgens 14th at ATU triathlon Tunesia |
| body | *Hernaert and Jurgens in the lead pack at Tunesia (picture: Emilio Hernaert)* Thomas Jurgens came 14th last weekend in the sprinttriathlon at Hammamet, Tunesia. First Belgian as Antonio Hernaert did not finish due to a flat. Hernaert was in the head of a race and a solid performance was in the making. Emmanuel Lejeune battled his way from the background in the 5km run to a 21st place. *Antonio supporting Thomas at Tunesia (picture: Emilio Hernaert)* "I had a good swim," says Antonio. "After two kilometer on the bike I got hold of the head of the race and could easily cling on. Unfortunately, 7km later it was game over. Quite the disappointment," says the LTTD athlete. *Thomas battling for a good swim exit (picture: Emilio Hernaert)* Thomas Jurgens took 14th and Emmanuel Lejeune 21st, exiting the swim in a third group and managing to close the gap only on the run. At this point, no official results have been release as Thomas Jurgens was not included, without grounds. This is being rectified at this moment. *Thomas Jurgens running for 14th (picture: Emilio Hernaert)* *Original article on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 08/05/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

| title | Seppe Odeyn 6th at EC duathlon at Vejle |
| body | Seppe Odeyn came 6th at the EC long distance duathlon at Vejle, Denmark. A week after Ironman Texas he was part of a lead group of seven. Soren Bystrup broke free and stormed for the title. "In the second run I felt the damage done by Texas," says Seppe. "In the first run I had to let the fast runners go," Seppe explains. "On the bike the lead group formed and nobody managed to break away, until Soren Bystrup attacked. I stuck with the pack and was joined by Dutch Daan De Groot. The latter tried to attack and managed to make connection with Bystrup. But it the run he was no match for the Dane. I did not have the legs to make the difference in the second run and am thus happy with the 6th place. Not the best idea so far, one week after IM Texas," says our vice-World Champion. Jan Petralia was the second Belgian pro, but felt the damage from his crash last year and did not finish. Soren Bystrup won in 2hr43'05. Felix Kohler managed to close the gap on the run, but came second 10 seconds later. Danish Simon Jorn Hansen came third. The Dutch Daan De Groot came fifth and Seppe sixth. The female race was lead by a strong Dutch. Marina Van Dijk had a small gap to bridge after the first run, but a strong bike leg brought her back among the competitors. The last run left her with bronze, Austrian Sandrina Iles took the win in 3hr003'24, followed by Swiss Melanie Maurer and Marina Van Dijk. ## Belgian AG In the AG ranking we saw neat Belgian performances as well. Wim De Coene took the M40 win, Koen Lintermans M35 silver, Bert Wouters came 5th in the same category. Jonas Vandevyvere came fourth in M25. Chris Bessemans fourth M30, Jan Cappaert 6th M55. Dutch performances were notable as well. Daan Schouten took the M20 win and Elly Visser did the same in the F60. *Original article on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 06/05/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

| title | Charlotte dominates, Pamphiel impresses at Veurne |
| body | *Charlotte Deldaele wins Veurne (picture: 3athlon.be/Hans Cleemput)* The first Argenta Sporkin Olympic triathlon at Veurne showed it had the potential to grow into a lasting race on the calendar. Pamphiel Pareyn and Charlotte Deldaele were the meriting victors. The finish was on the market square, among a massive crowd who enjoyed the opener of the individual summer season. It should have come as no surprise that LTTD-Oilservice took the win at the TeamTriathlon nationals last Tuesday. With Louis Naeyaert second, Arne Devliegher fourth and Sybren Baelde on five they showed up at Veurne with another strong collective. But Pamphiel Pareyn outshone them all. *Pamphiel Pareyn from start 'till finish (picture: 3athlon.be/Hans Cleemput)* The 3MD-athlete grew up in Veurne and took his home race by the horns. After a scorching swim he went solo on the bike. The wind was not to advantage of a solo run, but he kept his lead over a following pack of four and started the run with a 1'40 lead. ## "Familiar terrain" Omar Brons, Ruben Geys and teammates Louis Naeyaert and Arne Devliegher did not succeed in closing the gap, Pamphiel continued his run in the same fashion. "I had a small dip entering the last lap, but the crowd kept me going plus I was on home soil. I did not only enjoy my own performance, but also my girlfriend's. I have passed a good winter, training myself obviously bears its fruits," says Pamphiel concluding the biggest win of his career. When looking at the top-30 you notice abundance of big names. Louis Naeyaert ran to second ahead of Ruben Geys and Arne Devliegher. Sybren Baelden had the fastest run split and came fifth. Hannes Cool finished 6th, just ahead of fast Dutch Omar Brons. *Naeyaert, Pareyn and Geys, top-3 at Veurne (picture: 3athlon.be/Hans Cleemput)* ## Deldaele solo The female race was no match for Charlotte Deldaele. After the bike she had a four minute lead and on the run she had no competition as well. After ending on the podium during the national Team championships she took a well deserved win. Frauke Timmerman, Pamphiel Pareyn's girlfriend, took second as best of the rest. Lies Vermont was long since in the running for third, but eventually it was Jolien Vandemoortele who took bronze. "The legs were feeling quite sore after the sprint at Doornik," say Charlotte. "All was going fine and there was quite a crowd along the course. It's lovely to win a race which gets so much attention. Hats off to the organization," says Charlotte. *Timmerman, Deldaele and Vandemoortele, top-3 female (picture: 3athlon.be/Hans Cleemput)* The Argenta Sporkin triathlon at Veurne had an enlarged podium ceremony thanks to Sandman Events. Age groups per 5 years were honored, which was much appreciated by the competitors. Ward D'Hulster took the win among the paratriathletes. Veurne has all what it takes to become a classic. We saw very pleased athletes in the finish area, a central location is obviously a big plus for a triathlon. Our 3athlon.be-Sportoase athlete Gert-Jan D'haene confirmed the latter, he came 45th, 32nd elite on his brand new Ridley Dean. *Original article on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 06/05/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

Our 3athlon.be-Sportoase athlete Gert-Jan D'haene confirmed the latter, he came 45th, 32nd elite on his brand new Ridley Dean.\n\n*Original article on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 06/05/2018*\n*Translation by @T0v3*",

| title | Vanhoenacker breaks 3 records at IM Australia |
| body | Marino Vanhoenacker broke not less than 3 records last Sunday. First of all, he won Ironman Australia with a new race record. The full distance triathlon at Port Macquarie meant the 17th victory in the 41-year old athlete's career, making him the very first athlete to win Ironman races on all continents. Bink did 8hr14'37 to consolidate his 17th win, putting Luke McKenzie on 3'32 and Mark Bowstead on 11'47. The last one went in transition first, leading by one and a half minute on Vanhoenacker, but Bink struck back on the Marathon. Bowstead gradually lost terrain and McKenzie crept closer and closer. With a last surge from Vanhoenacker he consolidated his win with a marathon split of 2hr54'12. > Congrats @BinkMarino! Ironman #17 and the win here at #IMAus 🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️💪 pic.twitter.com/kmsIiKrdhI — Tony (@thetone) 6 mei 2018 Stephane Vander Bruggen, Belgian resident in Australia for several years came 7th AG en 2nd M40 in 9hr17'16, first M40 was AG winner Benjamin Bell in 8hr58'31... ## Dutch on 4th Another remarkable feat was the debut by Els Visser in the pro racing. After racing her first Ironman at Zurich last year, the Dutch Australia resident decided to go pro. In her home race she was in the running for the podium, but came in trouble during the last half of the marathon. Eventually she came 4th in 9hr56'32. Laura Sidall took the win in 9hr005'59, ahead of Melanie Burke and Kelsey Withrow. Els' story seems like a fairytale, starting as an obstacle course runner, surviving a shipwreck by swimming 7hrs on end and finally turning pro as triathlete. | title | National championship on De Muur? |
| body | It's the third year in a row that the Half Distance nationals are organized at Eupen, but in 2019 the streak might be broken by Challenge Geraardsbergen. Skoda Challenge Geraardsbergen announced this morning to have opened up their application to host the 2019 nationals, meaning that De Muur might see its first ever triathlon title battle. 2015 was the last time a Half Distance championship took place in Flanders. This year the Skoda Challenge Geraardsbergen takes place on June 10th, but it's not yet clear if they will stick to the date for 2019. It's the second edition under the Challenge flag, but the race has already become legendary due to the combination of De Muur and the Congoberg, as well as its stunning finish on the market square. It's an ideal setting and it offers the opportunity for Belgian top athletes to measure themselves with the Challenge toppers... In 2015 Charlene Ottewaere and Pieter Heemeryck were the last champions on Flemish soil, Pieter came second in last years edition of the Challenge Geraardsbergen and first Belgian. The competition is warned. | title | "Frustrating bike leg" - Frederik Van Lierde on IM Texas |
| body | Frederik Van Lierde obtained a 9th place last Saturday during IM Texas with a new personal best of 7hr53'43. "I managed to improve my personal best by nearly 7 minutes and finished my first sub-8hr race. I also noticed that this type of course (flat and fast) does not benefit my potential." Fre's race report... "At a given moment it became clear that the race would be decided during the marathon... I kicked off the day with a solid swim (49 minutes) in Lake Woodlands, without wetsuit. I did not run into trouble and could easily manage myself in the large lead pack." ## "Bike course? I'll be brief..." "The bike course has been subject to many opinions and discussions, so I'll be brief. I felt strong enough to make the difference in the 12 men group, but it all stuck together until T2. A bike split of 4hr10, including 3 extra kilometers (Ruedi Wild and myself took a wrong turn when trying to gap the pack). It took 25 km to regroup and it certainly was a hard chase. It gave me confidence to retry and surge, I tried several times but without success. None of the other athletes succeeded as well." "The closing marathon was finished in 2hr48, good but only that. I clearly felt the effort of the bike. Conclusion: happy with both time and current form. The Hawaii slot is a done deal and I'm ready to start preparing for IM France (24/06). Time for some rest and recovery," concludes Fre. His record time will stand on IM tables. Due to safety issues the bike course was shortened with 3,2km. Initially IM would not withhold any records set on the course, but Andrew Starykowicz (with a 3hr54'59 bike split) argued that variations in length were allowed in races such as Roth. So eventually IM came back on its decision and all records set at Texas will stand, meaning that Tine Deckers is now officially the 9th fastest woman ever on an IM course. Dan Empfield has posted an interesting column on the matter on Slowtwitch. Pro with Kris Coddens and Tim Van Daele, they took 6th and 11th. AG with Ced Smets who fell 4 seconds short of a win in his category. Kris Coddens was not fully recovered from the Xterra EC one week earlier and is planning for a blood exam to find out why. In June Xterra Belgium is planned and he hope to bring his A-game. (https://www.facebook.com/kris.coddens/videos/1498609446934797/) Tim Van Daele came 11th and showed honors to his parted friend Jonas Baten. "11th after this strongly occupied Xterra Greece is good for me. I came out of the water in Kris Coddens' feet, found my rhythm on the MTB and managed to move up in the field. I started running in 12th, but tried to go easy on my ankle in the descents," says Tim. Ced Smets lost some time in the swim but got himself back on track on the bike. In a sprint with Ezachiel Rencker he fell just a few seconds short for the win. Joerie Deleebeeck came 7th in M25 and Florian Badoex 4th M30. Arthus Forrisier won the race to Marcello Ugazio and Arthur Serrieres. The female race was won by Nicole Walters ahead of Helena Erbenova. Maud Golsteyn 6th. Lars Van der Eerden 4th M40, Quirijn Waaijenberg 2nd M16 and dad Mark bronze M55. Marcel Molendijk won the M50. *Original article posted on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 02/05/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

| title | ATRIAC, who else |
| body | The female race was once more a showdown by ATRIAC. From start to finish they were in the lead, giving them yet another national title. TriGT followed, EFC-ITC came third. With the fastest swim split the tone was set by ATRIAC. Valerie Barthelemy showed up, two days after racing in Bermuda, and scorched everything on the bike. TriGT was the best of the rest. The youngsters perfectly divided their race and kept the pressure on ATRIAC. With the fastest run split they still came 45 seconds short of ATRIAC. Bronze was the game changer. 185-Cecemel-Sportoase lost over a minute to EFC-ITC after the swim, but the latter had a very slow transition. 185 came barging in, but eventually fell 5 seconds short for the podium. Fifth went to TRIBE. *Original article posted on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Gert-Jan D'haene on 02/03/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

| title | LTTD breaks hegemony |
| body | LTTD won its very first national title teamtriathlon. In an exciting finale they outran ATRIAC, TriGT joined them on the podium. LTTD was ousted one of the favorites, with the Tom Mets transfer they took an experienced element from the ATRIAC train and it seemed to be key. TriGT and KTT-Zamaro-Willier were on the shortlist as well, just as SMO-Specialized. KTT had the fastest swim split and kept on pushing on the bike. The youngsters were eager for the title and went all in, LTTD followed 25 seconds later, ATRIAC, SMO and TriGT managed to stay within the minute and were battling it out for the podium. The final run showed too much for the youngsters, LTTD took the lead and the fifth athlete by KTT was visibly suffering. ATRIAC came on strong, and went over KTT. As did TriGT. SMO came fifth. LTTD kept on going and won the race with the fastest run split. *Original article posted on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Gert-Jan D'haene on 02/05/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

Kenneth started his signature bike showdown and managed to start the run in 14th place, hopping over the competition on the run and finishing in 8th. Van Luyck battered himself in the top 20 on the bike, but let it slip on the run, finishing in 22nd. Dirk Baelus came 41st. David McNamee won with photofinish from Chris Leiferman. Andreas Dreitz came third. The female race was colored by Alexandra Tondeur and Sofie Goos. Sofie would not finish the race, due to an injury obtained by a "collision with a drunken fan". The complete story is told in Belgian newspapers, who found it more interesting than IM Texas or WTS Bermuda. The same went for Sara Van de Vel, who had to forfeit her half marathon due to injury. Her strong bike leg does get the hopes up for following races. She was sixth overall female when she left the race, Sofie Goos seventh. Alexandra followed just behind and was on track for a top-10 finish. She ran eventually to 6th. Laura Phillipp took the win ahead of Marta Bernardi and Daniela Saemmler. Other strong AG performances came from Sophie Van Biervliet. 2nd in the F40. Charlene Ottevaere won F35 and Pauline Selleslagh came second in F25. Natasja Daniels 4th F45, Valerie Turlot 5th F50 and Sabine Leys third F55. The male AG was colored by a fifth M18 by Yander Fabri, 7th for Danek Aerden in M45, 5th M50 for Erik Thijs and 8th M60 for Luc Nachtegaele. Our partner Sportoase's CEO Michael Schouwaerts also participated, he finished in 8hr02'14. *Original article posted on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Hans Cleemput on 29/04/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |

| title | Duffy demonstrates, Belgians athletes present at Bermuda |
| body | *Claire Michel battling for 10th (picture: ITU/Wagner Araujo)* Home athlete Flora Duffy was out of league in the WTS at Bermuda. She came first out of the water, went solo on the bike and took a lonely win. She had an impressive 2 minute gap on the runner-up, Claire Michel came 13th, Valerie Barthelemy 26th. Duffy visibly enjoyed the home victory. Vicky Holland (GBR) came second after a sprint against Katie Zafares. Kasper finished 4th and takes the overall ranking lead. *Flora Duffy starting the party at Bermuda (picture: ITU/Wagner Araujo)* After a solid swim, Claire emerged 20th from the water, only 10 seconds behind Valerie. They were in the same bike pack, but Valerie lost touch after a near crash. Claire tried to cling on, but the second lap went a tad too fast. She dropped from the group a found herself in a battle for 10th place. Fell short in the sprint, but does obtain some very needed points with her 13th place. Valerie was on her own and merely avoided getting lapped by Duffy, allowing her to finish in 26th. *Maya Kingma leading the way (picture: ITU/Wagner Araujo)* Maya Kingma came on hard on the bike and did her best to keep the pace up high. This effort had to be paid cash during the run, where she would only finish 16th. ## "Keep on going despite cramps" Claire Michel had to face her demons during the race. "I was disoriented coming out of the water, but I saw a large pack in front of me and gave it all to join them. I continued my streak and tried to close the gap with the lead pack. The effort caused me to drop on the second climb, leaving me to slow down and conserve energy for the run. I was all cramped up from the effort, but managed to place a solid run." ## "Valerie against the back wheel" *Valerie Barthelemy finishing 26th (picture: Rudy Geens)* "It's impressive how she kept going on character. On the climb she slammed against my wheel, so I fear she crashed due to me, but Valerie ensured me that this was not the case. Apparently she was pushed by another falling athlete. She did lose contact with the group, but kept on fighting," says Claire. *Original article posted on [3athlon.be](3athlon.be) by Gert-Jan D'haene on 29/04/2018* *Translation by @T0v3* |
