      "body": "***NOTE: While originally my intention was to log my daily trip updates here, it had proven way too difficult and exhausting. So I will be posting our daily Germany trip summary backdated now that the trip is over.***\n\nWhile I'm not normally a breakfast person, when traveling, I try to get a good breakfast meal to keep me going throughout the day, until we grab early dinner. Luckily Hilton Mainz Hotel offers a delicious breakfast that meets my taste. \n\nAfter breakfast, I had a personal errand to check on some real estate that my parents are buying near Mainz. That was the main purpose of our stay in Mainz. After that, we took our bags, and hired a cab to Frankfurt Central Station to store our luggage for the afternoon, while we visit the experimental science museum [Experiminta](http://www.experiminta.de/). \n\nOne thing to note here is that Uber is not available in Mainz and Frankfurt. Only in Munich and some other parts of Germany it seems. So instead, you can use [MyTaxi app](https://us.mytaxi.com/index.html). It's quite similar to Uber, except it's not frictionless. Meaning upon destination arrival, the driver will confirm completion of the job, and you must approve the payment with a swipe. It does have good car filter options though, which is quite handy when I need certain car types.\n\nIn terms of pricing, it is exactly like a regular taxi, and in fact it is just a taxi using the app to connect with riders. So the price will be the same. So is the case with Uber in other parts of Germany I hear. So you won't be saving any money on this one. It's still a huge convenience though.\n\n**Experiminta Museum Review**\n\n\n<center>![20180803-IMG_0442-Edit.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWdezdTwm89z7wEvR4CTGr4yz3wX9k7D5ykG1cRcUQApb/20180803-IMG_0442-Edit.jpg)\n***Experiminta Entrance***</center>\n\nExperiminta is the kind of practical science museum aimed for kids to explore and learn by playing with interactive experiments. A real favorite of mine these types of museums, and of the kids as well. I always make sure to visit such museums when they're around. \n\nEntry to the museum for 2 adults and 2 children cost around 21 Euros. So pretty affordable. The museum is spread across five floors, but one thing that will jump at you from the start is, while they do have good and fun experiments, the museum feels more like a kindergarten or a house with multiple interactive rooms, rather than a building that was designed from the ground up to be a museum. \n\nYou walk the corridor and visit one room after another. There is no decoration that gives the place the science/tech museum feel as well. Objects are just placed in the empty space. In terms of looks, this was the least interesting, as there is no theme whatsoever to look at. \n\nIn terms of experiments, it did deliver on two hours of fun for my two kids (12 and 7), and us as well. Some experiments like the weighing balance did seem to repeat in different shapes over several rooms. But others were unique, and some I haven't experienced in other museums before. But the use of some old computers running Windows XP to run certain experiments gave it an even more aging look. \n\nThe biggest drawback of the place however is the almost complete absence of English translation. This isn't uncommon in Germany, but it still plays as major negative to me. Especially when it's about learning science in a museum. But that doesn't stop the kids from having fun. I quite liked it! But careful if you have young kids with fear of suck displays. Don't expect to be mind blown, especially if you've been to similar science museums. It's good to visit if you're near, but don't make long trip just for it.\n\n**Now off to Cologne!**\n\nFrom what I found, we had short time to reach the station, book our tickets (I didn't wanna pre-book and risk missing the train), and catch the train. So we took another MyTaxi back to central station and collected our luggage. When I went to book the tickets from the ATM, I couldn't find my destination, and was running out of time. A gentleman offered to help us, and it turns out even though I selected English as language, I still have to key in city names in German. Which is silly if you ask me. So I had to enter ***Köln*** instead of ***Cologne***! Keep that in mind if you need to book ticket.\n\n***Pro Tip 1: Make sure to enter destination names in Germany when searching for train tickets.***\n\nSo anyways. By the time we had the ticket, there was very little time, and to make matters worse, the ticket was printed in German! We rushed to the wrong platform, and by time we realized, it was too late. We had to take the next train. \n\nAnother odd thing is, when I used the [official Deutsche Bahn site](https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml), I filtered for fastest trains, and it showed the train we missed as last fast train to Cologne today. But when I went to the counter, the lady told me there is another train in like 20 minutes. When I checked their app without the filter, there was that same train indeed, and even more, and as fast, and some even a little faster than the one we missed. So what was that about? My guess is it was filtering for the most modern trains, which is not the same. \n\n***Pro Tip 2: Check train options without Fast Connections filter if you don't see the option you need.***\n\nSo with that, we were onboard the train and enjoying the scenery on the way to our next destination...       "body": "So the time has come where I take the family for our long waited annual summer vacation. The destination this time is Germany.\n\n**Brief Plan**\n\nI'm traveling with my wife and two kids for about three weeks across Germany. Through painful experience, I learned to plan my trip ahead and decide where I want to stay and what I plan to do each day. The plan is not carved in stone, but it sets right expectations, helps plan budget, be prepared and plan ahead for all activities, and most importantly, avoid wasting time!\n\nWhile Germany doesn't lack in historical places to visit, I figured with kids of 12 and 7 years old, pure historical sites and cities will be of little interest to them. So there will be some, but only little of that. Mostly limited to those fascinating looking castles.\n\nBeside that, our trip starts in Frankfurt/Mainz, then goes to Cologne. From there we will also go to Bruhl, Stuttgart, Gunzburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berlin, and then back to Cologne for 2 days, mainly to attend a day of Gamescom,  before heading back to Kuwait from Frankfurt. \n\nThe trip is gonna be a mix of theme parks, zoos, castles, and natural places. Our trip began August 2nd. So I'm already a bit behind schedule on that.\n\n**Day 1: Morning or night flight?**\n\nRoute: Kuwait - Frankfurt - Kuwait\n\nThere are two types of people. Those who prefer morning flights, and those who prefer night flights. But both always want to have more leg space, and preferably better service.\n\nI normally prefer direct routes when possible, and airlines that offer **Premium Economy*. A poor guy's business class if you will. Mainly because it offers a bit more leg space, which is crucial for health reasons to me. I've been on flights that had such narrow space for legs, it should be illegal. Also Premium Economy provides a bit more service, and less noise.  \n\nThe past two years I booked **Lufthansa Premium Economy** for my trips to Florida, and Norway. For my business trips to London, I always book **British Airways Economy Plus** as well. The experience was good, but the fact that Lufthansa only flies after midnight in Kuwait was always an inconvenience for me. As it means I must stay awake, and keep kids awake till we're onboard, and then struggle to get a decent sleep afterwards. And upon arrival at my destination, I'm already jet lagged, sleep deprived, and cranky. Add to that  the hotel room may not be ready yet if I arrive before check-in time. With the destination being Frankfurt however, it still seemed like a no brainer at first.\n\n This year however, and due to personal reasons, I only started planning for my summer vacation in begin of June, and prices were already skyrocketing. **Lufthansa Economy** was already way out of my budget. So I started looking at alternatives. I recall the last time I tried **Emirates Economy**, it was pretty good experience. And due to the fact that Emirates runs multiple flights from Kuwait daily, and Dubai airport being a main hub that connects to all major airports around the world, this meant I can have the flexibility of choosing the time I want. Also, their prices were extremely competitive, as they have so many connections and seats to fill. So I booked my flight to be about **10 AM**, with 2 hours layover in Dubai, then 6 hours direct flight to Frankfurt, reaching little before sunset there. I think the Premium Economy had more leg space. But the Emirates Economy was good enough. And the entertainment system in Emirates Economy is the best I've seen in any Economy class, and far outperforms both British and Lufthansa. For one, their movies and tv shows collections are huge. But let's go to the screens. Emirates had largest screen, with smooth touch interface. Both British and Lufthansa had smaller screens, some not even touch based, and the ones that were touch were not nearly as responsive. To top it off, Emirates has an extra game controller below the screen that doubles as a second screen as well. So you can enjoy watching Airplane live camera view on the controller, while watching a film on the main screen. But you get the idea I hope. \n\nUpon arrival, we all felt the trip went immensely smoother than our previous flights. Most probably due to the fact that it was in the morning and we all have had our share of in-bed sleep. The bit of sleep I lost the night before due to insomnia I managed to recover during our flight, and when we reached Frankfurt, I was fully awake, and in perfect mood. It made me realize how much more convenient it is to fly during the day, as opposed to against my regular sleeping hours. Some people seem to prefer night flights, and manage to have good sleep during it. Not me. Not us. Not often at least. \n\nThe only downside was that the flight was delayed on both parts of the journey between 20 and 40 minutes. Not a big deal, but I notice it happens far more often with Arabic airlines. I have had Lost items experience from Emirates before, and within 24 hours they had emailed me about the lost items by themselves, and told me to collect it. They did not disappoint this time also. By the time I had collected my luggage, I went to Emirates office and asked about the headset. The guy immediately identified it, and within a minute it was back in my hands! Another reason to trust this airlines. \n\nWith all that in mind, I was already thinking I will be relying on Emirates Economy far more often in the future, and will be aiming for morning flights when possible.
