| body | This second meeting with the vampire was far different than the young man’s first. Then the young man had been sneaking and sulking through the lair of a monster. He had been cautious and quiet. He had brought special weapons and tools given by an ancient order dedicated to fighting such beasts. Then the thing had bound him in shadow and whispered in his mind. Now he had burst down the door with a kick and bellowed out a challenge. The creature hissed in answer. He could see its shape clearly. He could strike it, contend with it. He could laugh at it, something he had feared before he could mock now. “Hold!” said the vampire as it leapt away. “I have no reason to stop fighting you, demon.” “Still you use their words instead of your own! Do you not realized what I truly am? What you now are?” The young man roared out a laugh and charged again. The two struck blow after blow: the fight lasted minutes. Neither noticed, and the young man did not stop to consider that no mortal fistfight would last more than a few seconds. They wrestled their way out to the street. People scattered as they threw each other into signposts and mailboxes, a cafe’s patio seating was ruined and one man left his car barely ahead of one of the combatants being slammed deep into its frame. The young man folded pieces of metal away as he climbed out of the wreck. The vampire stood a few feet away and he could see him clearly now. “See?” The vampire spread his hands wide and spun around slowly looking over the chaos. He was tall, and muscular. He wore a kilt and boots but no shirt. His skin was yellow and his hair was white. There was a red-and-black tattoo that pulsed on his chest. “They cannot see us, you know. They cannot understand. They will never have our vision. Only we have the sight to see a thing through. And I have given you the strength now.” The young man stood in the sun, the vampire was in the shade of one of the tall buildings allowed. He suddenly realized the sun burned his skin, as if he was on a beach dosed in oil. He moved to the shade himself. He could hear the heartbeat of every human around as they ran from him in terror. Scattered, misguided, random and inconsitan the beatings of the hearts of man were. Louder than any of their directionless hearts he could hear his own. Slow and purposeful, deliberate. He felt his own heart on his skin. He tore at his shirt and saw the same red-and-black pulsing tattoo. “This is your heart now, your own unique brand. You and only you may say what it means.” The vampire smiled as he offered his hand. “Welcome Brother. What is your name they gave you when you were human?” The young man looked over his own arms before straightening and grasping the vampire’s hand. “Vlad,” he said, “they called me Vlad.” |

| body | The Thralls were not fast, but they did not stop. The young man wasn’t tired, but he was out of the special bullets he had stolen from the Tinker’s shop, and the gun he had also stolen was useless without them. Running was the only option, running through the streets until the sun rose. He risked a glance behind him and there were still a dozen or so jogging after him with their mouths agape. The vampire had freed them all right, freed them to hunt down his enemies. The young man had just shot what had been his sister in the face with the last blessed bullet, and he felt nothing. He had found her finally after a twelve hour search. She was eating-well, Thralls were known to feed in a particular way according to the Tinker’s book (also stolen) and once they did there was nothing left but to kill them. Usually with excessive head trauma. Anger, sadness, loss, guilt: none of these did the young man feel. He did not feel tired like he had days earlier, he barely felt the streets beneath him as his feet pounded away to propel him forward. He had a strange thought, and stopped to consider it. The Thralls came to within ten feet of him and also stopped. They were also not out of breath, having no need to breathe. They growled and snarled. Some had wounds that would no longer heal. “Why do you kill the innocent?” The young man had no reason to think they would understand. He knew they would though. Hunger. “Why do you chase me?” Master. “Where is your master?” Master. “This is ridiculous. Where is your master, so that I may kill him?” There was no answer to that one. The young man walked close to them. He paid no attention to their growls and snarls. He put his face close to one of the more recently-turned Thralls and searched for any sign of intelligence. Nothing. The young man looked about, and walked over to the steps leading up to the nearest building. He sat, and waited. Hours went buy. The street lights turned off, and the Thrall started to quiet and wander about. At first they scattered, but then they all turned and shambled in the same direction. The young man looked up from the Tinker’s book. “‘The Thralls may range at night but fearing the rise of a sun they return to the nest of their master vampyr’. At least the Tinker’s book doesn’t lie.” He stood and blinked in the first harsh rays of the morning sun. Better stick to the shadows while he followed the Thralls till his eyes adjusted. |

| body | The Wizard’s name was Randolph, which the young man thought was very much a wizard’s name. Of course, he had only met the one wizard. The only wizard the young man had ever met was reclining in his chair on the porch of a house in a genteel neighborhood smoking a long pipe that produced much smoke, which the young man thought was a very wizard thing to do. But of course, he had only ever met the one. “Young man,” the Wizard said in a Wizard tone of voice, “you are quite lucky to be alive.” The Wizard said it, so it must be true. “What about all the people I went in looking for? I couldn’t find any sign of any of them. And these bullets the Tinker gave me, why didn’t they work?” “How do you know the bullets didn’t work, hmm? You are alive, are you not?” “Yes, well, so is the vampire.” “So?” “So, if you hand me a gun with special anti-vampire bullets I think it reasonable to assume they are supposed to kill the demon, don’t you?” Randolph chuckled. The young man thought for a split second that maybe all of this man’s mannerisms were because of his age and not his office. Maybe he was just an old man. How would one even tell the difference after all? “What do I do now? My sister still has not turned up, and it was three days ago that the vampire said he would let everyone go.” Randolph eyed the young man askance. “‘He’? How do you know it was a male?” The young man started to answer, but stopped himself. The shadowy figure he had fought had had no features, and the voice he had argued with he had heard in his own head. It may have been his own voice. “I guess I just assumed.” Randolph the wizardy Wizard’s countenance darkened. “Assuming is never a good idea in these matters young man. But the thing did not lie, its prisoners have been recovered. Stay yourself, we could not find you, and so we could not tell you. Your sister is safe, and when she and the others recover it will all seem like a fantastic dream. It will be as if it never happened.” “Well, that’s, that’s. I don’t know what to say, I can go back, life will be like it was a week ago?” “Yes,” the Wizard muttered as he drew on his pipe and rocked his chair. The young man sank down on the bench next to the wizard. “What a relief. Never have to think about Tinkers and their impossible library room-dimensions, or shadow demons that hiss in your brain, or-” “It is alright, I will not be offended if you live a life without a thought of Wizards.” “I’m sorry, you saved me in the first place and this would not have been possible without you, it’s just, I am tired.” The Wizard twisted in his chair to lock eyes with the young man. “These kinds of things have a way of, well, marking us, young one.” He held his gaze for a long second before twisting back to his settled position. The young man coughed a little as there was a mild burning in his chest. |

| body | “Tell me truly, why are you here?” The young man had not caught his breath. His need for air competed with his need for silence as he sat behind the shelves in the second story of the warehouse, his leg bleeding, his gun almost empty. “Why do you carry the tools of a Tinker?” The voice was coming from every direction and no direction. It was almost as if it was in his own head, but that would mean-no, no. Could let that thought in. The young man grabbed at the pack on his hip for the last loader of blessed bullets for his six-gun. “You are no Tinker.” The young man froze halfway through reloading, the gaze of the vampire heavy on his forehead. He slowly looked up to see the shadowy figure of a thin man with glowing eyes hovering before him with its feet off the ground. “Tell me, are you here to kill me?” The figure did not speak, but the young man still heard the mocking words. He snapped back to his gun and fumbled the action closed as he was swept up in a rush of shadow and pinned to the wall opposite his shelves. He had pulled the trigger reflexively, a puff of shadow had blown off, but the figure seemed unhurt. “No, no, the Tinkers do not send such clumsy ones as you.” “I am here to save my sister.” The young man could do nothing in the demon’s embrace. “Your sister? You thought I had her, and you came to get her back? How little do you know!” The shadows whisked around the pack that bore the imprint of a hammer and anvil. “Or have the Tinkers learned nothing in all the years we have let them live?” “They told me enough,” the young man was sure he was going to die, “they told me that you had some sort of Dream that I needed to end.” The shadows receded, the young man fell gasping to the floor, his gun was gone. “Dream? Dream. Oh yes, that is what you mortals call...yes. My ways are far more elegant than such Wizard’s metaphors, and my power is decidedly not yellow.” A chuckle could be heard in the young man’s head, it was painful but short lived. “You think I took slaves, like your Yellow Kings of generations past, how quaint. No, the people in my company are with me because they will it so. My kind are a solitary sort any way.” The young man tried to stand but could not. “No, soon I will have what I need from this place, and then I will leave.” “What happens to the people?” “What people?” “The people who have gone missing, the people you have under a spell.” “You can have them. In fact, you can have them now.” An arm extended from the figure and a hand gestured as if to wave the young man and all his concerns away. He stood, finally, and retreated slowly before the voice was heard in his mind once more. “You are no Tinker. Your mind is not filled with hate or fear. Neither are you Wizard or Priest. No, you are here because of your conviction. You would bear the brand well, young one.” The young man felt the door jam with his hand he had outstretched behind him and he bolted through it. Down the stairs. His leg made him fall down the last flight. He burst out the door to the street. It was midday, there were people about, he drew looks but he knew the monster would not follow him. He ducked into an alleyway to finally take a moment to catch his breath. There was a burning in his chest, and he unbuttoned his shirt to let the air cool his skin. “I have got to find the Wizard,” he said aloud, “I need another plan.” He walked away resolutely, having not noticed the fresh red-and-black tattoo on his chest that slowly faded away as it cooled. |

| body | “What? Ha! Your head is filled with fairy tales and horror movies young man.” He bustled about behind the counter, working on several timepieces and more than one computer repair seemingly simultaneously. The store was empty even though every surface was covered with products and projects and the frontage was on on of the Gray City's main avenues. The old tinker wore a set of clock maker’s glasses that the young man wanted to say had too many lenses but was far too timid to push the issue himself. In fact he was going to turn away and leave until the wizard spoke up. “It is alright Tinker, he knows.” Tinker eyed them both sideways. The wizard nudged the young man. “My landlord, sir. Of the apartment building on first and Green Leaf. I-we think- well, he is a-” “Hush!” The scattered movements came into sharp focus as he locked the front and waved them to the back. He had a harsh look for the wizard. “You were going to let him name the demon. You should know better, grandfather.” “Oh, come now.” The wizard fairly herded the young man to the back room. “You and your damnable secret signs that no one can remember. We have an urgency.” “Eh?” The tinker still wore his many-lensed glasses. “You don’t mean?” The young man knew the answer to this non-question. “My sister, sir.” The tinker sighed as he turned away and leaned on the wall that formed the outermost border of his mainstreet shop. “Please sir, I will trade away anything to help her.” The wizard scowled, the tinker laughed. The young man only thought he knew what he said. The tinker straightened as he finished the sequence on the secret pad that opened the secret way to his secret room. He stepped forward and waved them in to the portal that they could not see the other side of. The young man had no idea what lay ahead, naturally. He knew very little, all told. But he knew this threshold had a particular finality to it. Even so, it was but a moment of hesitation before he followed the tinker and the wizard into the room that technically should not exist. The room was small. Stone walls. Dry, thankfully, and lit, somehow. The walls were all lined with books arranged as if on shelves. Of course, there weren’t any shelves, but there was a ladder (that the tinker had climbed to view the uppermost books) and chairs (one of which the wizard sat at). “Vampyr was the old spelling, and until a few decades ago where all the best information was filed. Thankfully Professor...well, never mind who, but he re-translated all the old stuff into modern common when the Dream broke and the rules changed. Ah, here. Nope, I am alright. Sit, sit. Page four thirteen, no, not there, that’s my seat. Wizard he can’t even read the dreamscript I have clearly labeled the chairs with...alright, alright, never mind. Four ten, ‘On Ghouls’, four thirteen, ‘Vampire.’ Young man. This particular kind of demon is one humans have always faced. The more fantastical kind that melts into shadow and feeds on blood yes, but even when the demons have been kept away we have still felt the subtle arts used by piggish men and fiendish women seeking to set all that they can touch to be just so. ‘Demons truly from the other side of things that posses those that summoned them and seek to sow misery and pain through the use of their subtle magiks’. The old spellings creep in there from time to time. I see you care little for where these things come from or how, understandable, we are in the cure stage since prevention has failed. Oh yes, I will tell you how to kill such a thing. Simple, really. Blessed bullets will work, for example, or a stake through the heart. Though to be fair that would kill most things. They can be burned right to ash if sufficient exposure to direct sunlight is achieved. That one takes hours, trickier than in the movies. I mean, so I’m told. Ahem. It should also be noted that, for some reason, other demons hate them. Were-creatures in particular. Seems to be a disagreement over tactics, or some hellish turf war bleeding over to our side. And of course dragons and giants are a whole other thing-what? Oh don't tell me he doesn’t know about-okay, okay. But nevermind all of that anyway, there are whole addendums to this book updated constantly on the failed attempts of humans to use one demon or against another. Anyway, to truly beat a vampire you must unweave his web of lies and uproot every evil seed she has sown in the minds of the innocent first, otherwise he will return to a new host and-worst of all-be keenly aware of you. Funny we should align them with bats, spiders are far more apt. A vampire ‘speaks such that he is believed’ you see it written there? Yes, even the most pure of us will fall for his lies. Hmm? Yes, seductor, or seductress, often. Quite a lot of the arbitrary archetypes collapse in on themselves when a modern eyes begins to examine the ancient demonologies developed by-yes, well, our wizard’s look warns me back on course. Before we talk of killing a vampire, we must first cut his web. His thralls-the technical term mind you-lend him their own life blood to make him far beyond anyone’s touch. How? I can give you the ‘how’ young man, but the tools are for you to discover. ‘Every vampiric house is built differently, having as it’s architect one of innumerably diverse furies’. Each of his thralls must be dealt with in one of three ways. You must take the vampire’s dream away by force. But this would be matching strength versus strength with the mind of an addict as the proving ground, wise men stay away from pitched battles on such uneven footing, and I see even our formidable friend would prefer another way, eh wizard? You must replace the dream. Remind the thrall who they were when they were human. Some...talisman, or book, or photo, anything that might snap a person out of a destructive pattern and make them resolve to change. Failing that? Yes, I did say three ways. Well, what do you expect me to say, he asked and I must answer wizard. Young man, in order to end the vampire’s nightmare, you will have to kill his thralls, all of them, one by one, and watch the life leave their eyes to make sure he can no longer draw strength from them.” |

"body": "\n“What? Ha! Your head is filled with fairy tales and horror movies young man.” \n\nHe bustled about behind the counter, working on several timepieces and more than one computer repair seemingly simultaneously. The store was empty even though every surface was covered with products and projects and the frontage was on on of the Gray City's main avenues. The old tinker wore a set of clock maker’s glasses that the young man wanted to say had too many lenses but was far too timid to push the issue himself. In fact he was going to turn away and leave until the wizard spoke up.\n\n“It is alright Tinker, he knows.”\n\nTinker eyed them both sideways. The wizard nudged the young man.\n\n“My landlord, sir. Of the apartment building on first and Green Leaf. I-we think- well, he is a-”\n\n“Hush!” The scattered movements came into sharp focus as he locked the front and waved them to the back. He had a harsh look for the wizard. “You were going to let him name the demon. You should know better, grandfather.”\n\n“Oh, come now.” The wizard fairly herded the young man to the back room. “You and your damnable secret signs that no one can remember. We have an urgency.”\n\n“Eh?” The tinker still wore his many-lensed glasses. “You don’t mean?”\n\nThe young man knew the answer to this non-question. “My sister, sir.” The tinker sighed as he turned away and leaned on the wall that formed the outermost border of his mainstreet shop. “Please sir, I will trade away anything to help her.”\n\nThe wizard scowled, the tinker laughed. \n\n“Vampyr was the old spelling, and until a few decades ago where all the best information was filed.
