This made me think if I could do something with Serverless and Ruby so that I have hands-on experience with them. I was looking at some of the sample projects on the Serverless website when a Twitter bot written in node stood out.\n\nTaking inspiration from the same, I decided to create a [bot](https://twitter.com/HaikuDaily3) that would tweet haiku at a regular interval. Let’s get started\n\n##### Step 1: Set up a Twitter application\nHead to https://developer.twitter.com/en so that you can create an account and get access to Twitter APIs.\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd446hX31SYqvxL1rPeZeNsud8nnk3YNRrPph9WdD6bpR/image.png)\nYou want to choose bot and fill in the basic details\n\nTwitter does ask a lot of questions and as long as you fill in reasonable answers, you will get through. Once you have filled the form, create an app, and head over to the Keys and tokens section. From there grab your API Key, Secret, Access token, and secret\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPibDQqn53V51GjJSaxUNn5TyArjCYbU1x5eV88ffofY7/image.png)\nYou will need all 4\n\n##### Step 2: Set up your code\nYou first need to install serverless and AWS. Assuming that you already have an AWS account, you will need to add the AWS key and secret to your local env. If you are interested in creating profiles, I have a small section about it in this post.\nYou can get started with serverless using the commands below\n\n```\nnpm install serverless -g\nserverless create -t aws-ruby -p twitter-haiku-bot\n```\n\nThe AWS-ruby is a very basic template and you will need to modify the same a lot.\n\n```\ncd twitter-haiku-bot/\n\n```\n\nTo get started, let's create a Gemfile in the project with the following Gems\n\n```\nsource 'https://rubygems.org'\ngem 'twitter'\n```\n\n\nAfter that, we can do a\n\n`bundle install`\n\nNow that we have the required gems, let's go ahead and create an environment config file for the dev called dev.env.json with the following details\n```\n{\n  \"TWITTER_CONSUMER_KEY\": \"<your twitter api key>\",\n  \"TWITTER_CONSUMER_SECRET\": \"<your twitter api secret>\",\n  \"TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_KEY\": \"<your twitter access token>\",\n  \"TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET\": \"<your twitter access token secret>\"\n}\n```\n\nFrom there, lets now move on to the code\n\n```\nrequire 'json'\nrequire 'twitter'\n\ndef bot(event:, context:)\n begin\n  client = Twitter::REST::Client.new do |config|\n   config.consumer_key        = ENV['TWITTER_CONSUMER_KEY']\n   config.consumer_secret     = ENV['TWITTER_CONSUMER_SECRET']\n   config.access_token        = ENV['TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_KEY']\n   config.access_token_secret = ENV['TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET']\n  end\n  haiku = client.search('#haiku').first.text\n  client.update(haiku) \nend\n```\n\n\nWe now need to configure the serverless.yml file\n\n```\nservice: twitter-haiku-bot\nprovider:\n  name: aws\n  runtime: ruby2.5\n\ncustom:\n  env: ${file(./${self:provider.stage}.env.json)}\n\nfunctions:\n  bot:\n    handler: handler.bot\n    events:\n      - schedule: rate(6 hours)\n    environment:\n      TWITTER_CONSUMER_KEY: ${self:custom.env.TWITTER_CONSUMER_KEY}\n      TWITTER_CONSUMER_SECRET: ${self:custom.env.TWITTER_CONSUMER_SECRET}\n      TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_KEY: ${self:custom.env.TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_KEY}\n      TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET: ${self:custom.env.TWITTER_ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET}\n```\n\nThe bot is now configured to run every 6 hours and post a Haiku on the account.\n\n##### Step 3: Deploy\n\nSo let's deploy\n`sls deploy`\n\nThis takes time and once it is deployed you can invoke the function using\n`sls invoke -f bot`\n\nIf everything runs fine, you should see a Haiku posted on your account like this\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcmno8BzQ6TxaeQTuHuQu6uXmhf4iXCXFf7SUz3fXds5W/image.png)\n\n\n##### Troubleshooting\n\nIf not, this is the most common error that you will see\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYWEyqtnwXbiAAhQmPCihud35L71XGik3TxkMqjMpFUsY/image.png)\n\n\nFor someone just starting out, this bug is annoying and there is a lot of discussion in the forums about how to solve it. However, after much trial and error, this is the solution that worked for me, serverless-ruby-package\n\n`npm install --save-dev serverless-ruby-package`\n\nIn the serverless.yml file added the following\n\n```\nplugins:\n  - serverless-ruby-package\npackage:\n  include:\n    - handler.rb\n    - lib/**\n```\n\n\nAdded the following lines on top of handler.rb file\n\n```\n# handler.rb\nload \"vendor/bundle/bundler/setup.rb\"\n$LOAD_PATH.unshift(File.expand_path(\"lib\", __dir__))\n```\n\nPost this I just deployed the serverless function again\n`sls deploy`\n\nNow I have a bot that runs every 6 hours and posts a haiku if it finds it suitable. It was only a week after the incident that Hall was able to get into contact with website support. Unfortunately, all of his bitcoins were gone. As a result, Hall lost AU$1,600 to the hackers- as reported in [cryptocoinnews](https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/australian-trader-loses-au1600-hackers-bitcoin-scam/)\n\n**What happened with Hall above is phishing or getting scammed through real looking websites. We will come to it later with regards to securing yourself against these.**\n\n<h3>Exchange being hacked</h3>\n\n> At the beginning of 2014, Mt Gox, a bitcoin exchange based in Japan, was the largest bitcoin exchange in the world, handling over 70% of all bitcoin transactions worldwide. By the end of February of that year, it was bankrupt.\n\n> The victim of a massive hack, Mt. Gox lost about 740,000 bitcoins (6% of all bitcoin in existence at the time), valued at the equivalent of €460 million at the time and over $3 billion at October 2017 prices. An additional $27 million was missing from the company’s bank accounts. Although 200,000 bitcoins were eventually recovered, the remaining 650,000 have never been recovered- from [blockonomi.com](https://blockonomi.com/mt-gox-hack/)\n\n**The above is an incident of an entire exchange being hacked. Gox).\n\n> The bank( exchange) is the place where your gold(bitcoins) resides.\n\n<h3> How can you keep your gold(bitcoin) at home?</h3>\n\n**It is exactly what paper wallets are meant to do**.
