In the early years of the internet, it was very simple to have a company valued in the millions. All you had to do was create a dot-com, go public, and the money would come pouring in. In those early days many companies valued in the millions of dollars had nothing more than an idea, sometimes not even ironed out completely. This did not matter to investors, since they believed there was never a way the stocks would ever crash.\nThe overly enthusiastic unexperienced investors sold their homes, quit their jobs, and poured every single penny into what we now know was one of the biggest financial bubbles of our time. Of course we know now how it all played out, and we are very aware of the millions of dollars that disappeared into the thin air, almost overnight.\nWhat happened? you may ask - It's actually quite simple to explain. The enthusiasm for the dot-coms was not in any way connected with the realities of their value propositions. This meant, that when investors would buy into a dot-com they did so simply because they were expecting to cash out soon after, and not because of any belief in a company or product.\nEventually the new money dried up, the big players cashed out, and everyone left holding the bags got caught in the crossfire. These recent events should serve as a big lesson for new investors, specially in this new cryptocurrency market.\nNot all dot-com companies disappeared\n\nAlmost not necessary to point this out, but just in case anyone is confused about the events that followed the crash. As a matter of fact some companies, like amazon and ebay are millions if not billions of dollars bigger today, than before the crash. Of course, today the marketcap of cryptocurrencies is much lower, which makes my point even stronger.\nAs we can clearly see, the crash was really a way of the market shaking off all the projects that offered no real value to the technology sector at the time. All the dot-coms that were part of a bubble came crashing down to zero. The tech stayed, the real companies survived and today we are participating of an economy that relies heavily on the technology that started back in those days.\nCryptocurrencies will follow\n\nIt might not be exactly the same, but it sure will be very similar. Today we have a young market full of speculation, with many investors who are not in the least concerned with research or technology. The idea of many is unrealistic to say the least.\nThose investors who don't like to learn from the past will probably endure the same fate. They will buy into speculative currencies that offer little to no real value, waiting to 10x before they sell. Most will fail. That might sound harsh, but honesty is a good token to trade.\nI believe in real Cryptocurrencies, specially Steem\n\nFor me it comes down to the use of a product or service. In simpler terms, if no one is using something, then it does not really matter what my thoughts on the particular product might be. The known concept of supply and demand at its core is the only one I'm really worried about.\nIn my last post I shared an image that I think makes my point very clear. Steem in the simplest of ways has a huge advantage over many other cryptocurrencies. This may be the case, but I sincerely doubt those predictions will ever become true. What is more likely to happen is that Bitcoin will continue to become the new gold of the markets, leaving other currencies to fight for the title of \"the best currency\" in the world.\nIt's time to rethink why we are here in the first place\n\nFor each one of us to really take a hard look in the mirror and ask ourselves if we truly understand what's taking place in the world. The reason why the technology of blockchain is sure to take over our financial system in the near future. Despite his physical disabilities and the progressive limitations imposed by the degenerative disease he suffered, Stephen Hawking is probably the best known physicist among the public since Einstein's time. Wrestler and winner, throughout his life he managed to overcome the immensity of impediments posed by the evil of Lou Gehrig, a lateral amyotrophic sclerosis that afflicted him since he was twenty years old. He was immediately diagnosed with a degenerative neuromuscular disorder, ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The doctors assumed that the disease was going to end his life in a few years; however, they were wrong. Naturally, Stephen's life was not the same thereafter, but his physical limitations did not interrupt his intellectual activity at any time; in fact, they increased it.\nIn October 1962 he had begun his PhD studies at Trinity Hall in Cambridge. After obtaining the title of doctor in theoretical physics (1966), his passion for the study of the origin of the universe was increasing, and his research focused on the field of general relativity, particularly in the physics of black holes, first described by Robert Oppenheimer in 1939.\nCertainly, Hawking is not only comparable with Albert Einstein for his popularity: like the formulator of the theory of relativity, Stephen Hawking set out the ambitious goal of harmonizing general relativity and quantum mechanics, in search of a unification of the physical that would account for both the universe and subatomic phenomena. In 1971 he suggested the formation, after the big bang, of numerous objects called \"black holes\", which would contain about a billion metric tons of mass, but would occupy only the space of a proton, a circumstance that would originate enormous gravitational fields, ruled by the laws of relativity.\nHis studies on black holes would lead him to combine for the first time the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics to solve the problem of studying these structures of very small dimensions and extraordinarily high density, which was not believed to be obtainable some knowledge In 1974 he proposed, according to the predictions of quantum physics, that black holes emit thermal radiation until their energy is exhausted and extinguished. Hawking would continue to hold this chair until his retirement in 2009. But as the intellectual achievements and recognitions were happening in his life (he received countless awards and honorary doctorates), he also advanced the degenerative process of his illness. First the immobility of his limbs led him to depend on a wheelchair; then the paralysis spread to almost his entire body; in 1985 he contracted a pneumonia that forced doctors to perform a tracheotomy, after which he completely lost his speech. From then on he could only communicate through a synthesizer connected to his chair, but even that did not demoralize him: he wrote seven other books and continued to publish articles and give lectures.\nA great popularizer\nIt is a great paradox, no doubt, that a man who was fully involved in the task of clarifying scientific concepts for the average public (unlike most of his colleagues, Hawking decided decidedly by disclosure) would have to face hard with the difficulty of being able to communicate them. However, thanks to his persistence and tenacity, he did not stop saving the pitfalls that were derived from his physical disabilities. In 1989, on the occasion of his visit to Spain to receive the Prince of Asturias Award, Stephen Hawking stressed the importance of ordinary citizens possessing sufficient scientific notions to participate in the debates that open new scientific and technological advances, avoiding that everything is in the hands of the experts.\nThat is the message that is discovered in some of his most famous books, such as Historia del tiempo: from the big bang to the black holes (1988), which has been translated into thirty-seven languages and from which in a few years more than twenty million copies. In his intention to get the book to a broad audience, Stephen Hawking renounces the formulas and exhibitions for specialists, but does not abandon the rigorous treatment of the issue.
