I don't wish to add to the negatively that has infected the social media sites and Internet conglomerates like Google. I only wish to point out that the current state of affairs is the result largely of centralization of Internet content.\n\nMany people unironnically believe Google itself is the Internet. They don't grasp that Google is a search engine that has outcompeted every other search engine, like Yahoo, Ask.com, etc. over the years. They own the web. By owning the web, I mean that they own websites, from your grandma's blog, to Infowars, to your own twitter account. Their blessing, or lack of it, can make or break your website.\n\nIf your site doesn't align with their idea of content that \"delights the user,\" you could lose site ranking in search results, and perhaps leave your blog a ghost town with only Russian bot spammers as visitors. Lest it's not clear, the guidelines that \"delight the user\" are created solely by Google.\n\n## Decentralized Web in Its Infancy\nI believe that the best fix is a complete destruction of how we view the web. Bitcoin has started a new line of thinking where Internet users once again look back at the decentralized roots of the web. And they want it back.\n\nThe technology is still new. There's some ideas of a technology stack of how it should work. I believe that it will run alongside the centralized web once it becomes usable.\n\nIt will harken to old but faithful P2P technology. It will connect to regular old PCs as nodes. It will have a DNS system that tells where to find the hostnames on nodes all across the web. Your PC could host a few websites depending on your computer's specs, and you could perhaps receive payment for doing this like a hosting provider, but in cryptocurrency.\n\nThink of it like a bitcoin node, but you don't need to download the entire web to be workable. You only have to host a few sites if you can and if you want the payment incentive. The sites will have redundancy on other nodes in cash your computer is off. The DNS system won't need to rely on IP addresses as much.\n\nThe concepts are already in place on the centralized web. Technology such as DNS over TLS improves security. The LAMP webstack could run on your PC or MAC with very few hiccups. Nodes could also act as Round-robin load balancers for sites that get swamped with traffic.\n\nSure, it probably won't have the nice features we are all used to. But it's a start. It will harken back to the old days, where it would be exciting to come across a forum or blog that you didn't know you needed. Minority voices, controversial voices, subversive voices could all still be discovered and un-censorable.\n\nI'd be willing to give up some conveniences, like if the sites weren't as media intensive and graphical as I like. Words and voices matter. Most of us don't want a handful of companies to do the thinking for us with content that has been cleansed for whatever political or moral reason is in style for the week.",

      "body": "I know, I know. Everyone wants the various bitcoin ETFs to get approve so they get rich. Hell, I want to get rich too. But I know there is still a minority of folks who care about the future of bitcoin and its true meaning in that future.\n\nWe're all hanging on the SEC's every word -- investors, media pundits, etc. We think they are some kind of ultimate judge on the legitimacy of bitcoin -- when that's far from the truth. Bitcoin will get along fine without a peep from the SEC. \n\nThe SEC has been slow or completely negligent on outright scams. They took too long to catch up to the ICO scams of yester-year, even when bitcoin enthusiasts were screaming that the SEC needed to help with the fraud. Then they jaunt into 2018 with a hammer for ICOs and have the audacity to create the fake Howey Coin, as if the many ripped off users from 2017 needed any more slap in the face. I'm not sure that the tax payer's money was well spent on such a stunt. They were a bit late on that meme -- the damage had already been done. They were not ahead of the game with their sarcasm. \n\n## Outside of Crypto -- they suck with their specialty: stocks, commodities. \n\nPeople don't usually think of the 2008 recession as part of the SEC's negligence.  As you can gather from the film \"The Big Short,\" no regulators caught that banks like Lehman Brothers' stocks were built around mortgage-backed derivatives. Lehman put their \"high quality\" stamps of approval on junk bonds, made money, and their stocks soared.\n\nThe regulators took no action to investigate outright fraudulent business practices behind a business, no matter the sector. When the gig was up, banks went under, executives got a slap on the wrist, and share holders were shit out of luck. So much for the SEC protecting investors on that one...\n\nThey let a web of fraud continue unabated until one of the longest recessions in history occurred. The outright negligence and greed of all financial regulators in 2008 will leave a lasting, perhaps permanent skepticism in the government. Perfect timing!\n\nNow about the commodities. Even a chairperson on the SEC, who dissented against the bitcoin rejected, said that there were already \"rumors\" that the gold/precious metals markets were manipulated. You think? This is fairly common knowledge to most traders, but even for an SEC chairperson to publicly acknowledge these rumors is a pretty strong confirmation to me. Read her letter here:\n\nhttps://www.sec.gov/news/public-statement/peirce-dissent-34-83723\n\nSo that the SEC let metals get so obviously rigged should concern bitcoin owners, since bitcoin is very much like a commodity. You should ponder the implications of SEC approval and the history they have had with commodities and staples.\n\n## Last Word\n\nAll this to say, that the SEC has a poor track record in protecting consumers. They often can't see forest for the trees, in my opinion. Or perhaps, if you prefer the tin-foil hat variety of explanations, there are most likely outside interests who have power over what should be an otherwise objective agency.\n\nAdditionally, if the wave gathers where consumers want in, and I mean a lot of consumers, it won't matter if the SEC has all their middle fingers raised at them. They will buy bitcoin. Public trust in government is at an all-time low and I very much doubt the public heeds regulators warnings as strictly as decades past.\n\nThe SEC can stand still, but they better be ready to get out of the way.       "body": "This past week, Robinhood announced that it was launching crypto trading in my state. Cool, I bought a bit of bitcoin to support the cause, even if there is no wallet interface (yet).\n\nThe interesting addition is the troll box style chat available for each coin. There are clearly many new people who have very little clue about the technology or how buying works. Many are buying whole coins and don't realize that they allow fractional quantities. \n\nAnother wave of new investors, like those who ventured in last year during the bull-run. The circle of life continues for Bitcoin. And yet Robinhood's interface leaves much to be desired for educating new investors.\n\n## Education needs to catch up NOW\nRobinhood needs help documentation, videos, anything that they can link new users to within the app. This isn't to say almost all exchanges could use better help guides. This has been an ongoing problem that I thought would be fixed right now, especially after the cluster-fuck of last year's hysteria.\n\nSure, the tech is moving ahead much better, with lightening network, atomic swap, etc. But education for the layman hasn't caught up. I believe that educating users is as much a part of adoption as the tech itself.\n\n## Avoiding Bad Advice and Crypto \"fake news\"\nThere's still plenty of bad actors within chats, telegram, or webmasters. Images circle with fake coins offered by exchanges that someone just used a browser's inspect element feature to produce.\n\nJust as Facebook had a fake news problem, crypto does also, but without a central authority to do much about it. Users must know this in order to avoid getting money. Though the wild west has been tamed over the years, it is still very much a rickety town in the desert.\n\nGood documentation, guides, and sensible, non-hysterical videos need to continue, even if they are scattered all over the Internet. Crowding out the bad actors is essentially what we need to do with truthful content. Google knows good content when it sees it (usually) so these content producers will be rewarded more than scammers. \n\nLeaders in the space should also point followers to good educators. The link juice helps Google, and a network affect builds up around the educator as more people find about him/her.",
