I really wanted to keep maximum head space but I think ceiling insulation of some type would help immensely.       "body": "Haha.. yeah, Soylent is a real and thriving company, last I checked, anyways.\n\nhttps://www.soylent.com/\n\nI, personally, have never come into contact with police or anyone for that matter hassling me about my vanlife activities. And it has been about 2 years.\n\nThe best parking situations I've found have been in Playa Vista where there are still lots of middle class residential areas with very little parking regulation -- many areas don't even have street sweeping. \n\nDowntown has changed dramatically in the past 5 years or so. There are still some seedy elements to be found, but nowhere near as many as you might think.\n\nVenice is difficult because of the tight parking and also just that generally seedy boardwalk. Cool to visit when you want to see some silliness, but just not a day-in day-out kind of place I want to be, in my opinion.",

And I've only had problems with actually needing to park in a garage one time (in Vegas) and we found an even better (and FREE) solution anyway, so it didn't end up being a problem. I also wanted a tall one so that I could build my bed up higher and have more space underneath for storage. Are you in your van full-time?",

I have a lot of gear and stuff since I'm living in it full-time and don't have any other storage, so I needed to build mine specifically for my needs. I wouldn't have been able to do that in a conversion van. I did go with a brand new van though (after a huge loss from buying an old Sprinter off of Craigslist) and I'm happy to not have to worry about the van itself having any mechanical issues. I think my buildout probably cost $6,000 or so. Should have kept track of my spending on it!",

Don't get an RV. Don't get something with a high roof. Don't get something rusty and weird looking from 20 years ago. The goal is to have a van that people say \"Oh, someone must be working on something\" and walk right on by without a second thought.\n\nFor this purpose, any post-2005 clean looking work van will do. Either a Ford Econoline or a Chevy Express. If you want to be fancy and get a newer Dodge Ramvan, by all means. In my case, vanny is a 2012 Chevy Express that I acquired from another vanlifer who had already applied some pretty cool fixins to it. \n\n### Queen size bed\n\nTo make this thing comfortable, you absolutely don't want to compromise your sleep situation. Your average work van is totally capable of housing a Queen size bed. Take advantage of this. \n\n### Windows optional\n\nYou don't really want windows, they just make you paranoid, because you probably are going to have lights and stuff in your van, and the last thing you want to do is be changing and realize that you forgot to close a curtain and there's a well lit version of naked you visible from outside the van.\n\n### Ceiling vent\n\nThe fantastic fan is necessary for ventilating the back of the van. This requires actually cutting a hole in the roof to install it. Totally worth it though\n\n### Solar panels\n\nIt's pretty easy to put a solar panel and some car batteries in the back of the van and set yourself up to charge phones, laptops, and run some nice LED lights in the back of the van. Definitely do this.\n\n### Hardwood floors\n\nIt's pretty cheap to set this up, and it has an odd psychological effect of making the space feel cooler and a bit higher class and slightly ironic.\n\n### Forget cooking\n\nSeriously, you just saved your entire rent check.       "body": "Yeah, conversion vans are crazy expensive -- it's because of who they're being marketed at. It's way easier just to get a regular old work van and put what you need in it. It shouldn't cost more than 10ish grand to get setup in a decent van.",

Yeah, I can totally see that adding a second person drives up the need for space. \n\nYou know what was actually another contributing factor that probably got me into vanlifing was that I was living on Soylent at the time. So I just had a case of that under the bed. \n\nPlaya Vista is great for it. Lots of unregulated parking in the neighborhoods just north of the airport. \n\nVenice is the classic place for it... but it's too much of the wrong kind of vanlife... \n\nLately I've been staying around downtown. I've found an outdoor long term lot that's cheap enough. And then I have a OneWheel that I use to get around. It's been pretty great.",

      "body": "It hasn't been bad tbh. We were here last year, and it was really nice with the exception of two nights, once in Miami and I can't remember the second night. You just gotta head out of the state sometime in March or early April. We did recently buy fans, so that helps and we run a dehumidifier once in awhile, but I guess the humidity doesn't bother us too much. Maybe because we're native Chicagoans, also a humid city.",

      "body": "So out here in Los Angeles, there is a growing trend of millennials taking to the vanlife to cope with high rents -- a subject I happen to be intimately familiar with. I have been vanning it up for over two years, and I ran a van rental business by putting mattress equipped minivans on Airbnb for about a year.\n\nFor at least a year, I was a proud vanlord. The official outfit of a vanlord is a red velvet robe, crocs with knee-high socks, a Burger King crown, and a scepter crafted from a radio antenna with a tennis ball on it (In case you wanted to know).\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfSCsJa6gNDGQMeidqKhgLZEcZk1xGfgFr5Fvh8hFqEgj/image.png)\n\nWith the advent of good co-working spaces and gym memberships, there are some of us who are out here hustling on their business ideas who realize, \"I don't really need an apartment, I have a bunch of other places I hang out.. what I really need is just a nice cheap place to sleep.\"\n\nA big plus if that place can be near whatever you want it to be near -- location, location, location.\n\nAnd so the vanlife is born!\n\nThe ultimate way to skip the commute and be frugal with your rental dollars.\n\nI'm considering doing an extensive post about vanny and the vanlife. It's just going to take a little time to do it. \n\nFor now, I'll just talk about some of the basics of what's in a good urban vanlife van.\n\n### Get a newer van that doesn't look weird\n\nThe goal of a good urban camper van is to be unremarkable. Don't get an RV. Don't get something with a high roof. Don't get something rusty and weird looking from 20 years ago. The goal is to have a van that people say \"Oh, someone must be working on something\" and walk right on by without a second thought.\n\n### Queen size bed\n\nTo make this thing comfortable, you absolutely don't want to compromise your sleep situation. Your average work van is totally capable of housing a Queen size bed. Take advantage of this. \n\n### Windows optional\n\nYou don't really want windows, they just make you paranoid, because you probably are going to have lights and stuff in your van, and the last thing you want to do is be changing and realize that you forgot to close a curtain and there's a well lit version of naked you visible from outside the van.\n\n### Ceiling vent\n\nThe fantastic fan is necessary for ventilating the back of the van. This requires actually cutting a hole in the roof to install it. Totally worth it though\n\n### Solar panels\n\nIt's pretty easy to put a solar panel and some car batteries in the back of the van and set yourself up to charge phones, laptops, and run some nice LED lights in the back of the van. Definitely do this.\n\n### Hardwood floors\n\nIt's pretty cheap to set this up, and it has an odd psychological effect of making the space feel cooler and a bit higher class and slightly ironic.\n\n### Forget cooking\n\nSeriously, you just saved your entire rent check. Eat out more and don't make your sleeping space smell like food. That would be cheaper, would it not? The process of creating a law could be gamified to  make it less chaotic and avoid the pitfalls of populism.\n\n### Choose Goals Not Solutions\n\nIt seems that worst inefficiencies in government must come from\n1. High tensions around choosing solutions to problems before the outcome of those solutions is fully understood\n2. There is no simple and automatic way to remove policies which do not perform well\n\nIt seems like what's needed is a good testing framework for split testing measuring the results of different policy solutions.\n\nPoliticians in any legislative system bicker over potential solutions without having a built in system for testing those solutions. \n\nThere should be a system to hypothesize, implement many policies on a small scale, test the results, and then implement the best solution on a broad scale.\n\nPolitical discussion should not be allowed into the second half of this process. Politicians should be allowed to be creative, and it should be reasonably easy to choose the metrics by which a policy should be measured, and forward the  policy idea on to be tested in a small area -- by making it law for a subset of the population for a testing period. After the testing period, the continued existence of the policy should depend solely on its ability to solve a problem in a quantitatively better way.\n\nIn current political systems, best in breed solutions to policy problems can easily get shelved, or not broadly enough applied, because the goals and metrics were not agreed upon in advance, and the solutions were not systematically split tested to see which actually performs the best and creates the best outcomes for all.\n\nIt's a mistake to allow politicians to directly choose policy solutions which can be broadly and permanently applied with no testing criteria. If citizens of a state chose which metrics were to be improved, I think it would be much more constructive and consensus on the long term improvement of a state would be easier to achieve.\n\nFor instance, say if a country was aiming at creating policies that raised the GDP, balanced the budget, lowered unemployment, increased the quality of roads, lowering the cost of infrastructure. \n\nOnce the goals are agreed upon, you can prevent infighting by applying all proposed policy solutions in different test districts. Then there would be an agreed upon timeline after which the pool of policies could be assessed to see which one improved the target metrics the most. At this point, the winning policies are propagated throughout all the other districts.",
