| title | Where Zombies originated from |
| body | Photo credit: Unsplash Apart from those who can't stand horror or any zombie movie at all, those of us who can and actually enjoy zombie movies can tell how fun and thrilling they can be. Apart from the suspense and the near death experience that tingles in your heart, it could almost make you wet your pants but that wouldn't stop us from watching it either. From " the walking dead" to "resident evil", "day of the dead" and the latest being "Army of the dead", the entertainment industry has thrilled us over and over with many zombie movies. The thrill and excitement keeps increasing over the years as the best producers create amazing content that drives our imagination wild with fear and the undead. But then have you ever stopped to wonder how the concept of zombie started or who was the first to come up with this theory? Well the zombie concept actually originated from the Haitian slaves who worked for French masters. These mythological undead beings that are created through the reanimation of a corpse usually from voodoo started from sugar plantations. These unstoppable flesh cravers have become a huge force in the entertainment industry over the decades and now it doesn't seem like we'll be seeing the end of them just yet. Although modern zombies has projected in movies we see lately usually arise from a vector, a disease or many other factors which are far from the original source zombies are created from. These can be attributed to what the audience wants to see or how creative the scriptwriter can be. These folklore which originated in Haiti as far back as the 17th century when West African slaves were forced to work on sugar plantations till death. Reports say this brutality made slaves long for freedom from their lives because their working conditions or their lives resembled that of a zombie. Some part of West Africa where Voodoo is practiced believe they can bring people back from the dead as zombies. A concept which is no entertainment or joke to them because they create concoctions from many ingredients which actually cause one to come back to life after death. Although these concoctions have been found to contain a deadly neurotoxin which at the right dose is capable of causing zombie like symptoms like difficulty walking properly or mental confusions which are typical of a zombie. These dose have to be exact as well or it could cause death, it would cause a person to seem dead for a while only to be revived later which made people assume the concept of zombie even more around that time. The word itself is thought to have originated from West African languages- ndzumbi meaning corpse and nzambi meaning "spirit of a dead person". Although the movies we see today have totally different concept from the original zombie concept, it has been noted to began to appear in literatures as far back as 1647 and is now being portrayed even in children cartoons like Scooby-Doo. |

| body | ![Uploading image #1...]() Growing up we had perfect barbie in all her skinny glory. Perfect skin, great hair, no cellulite or protuding belly. She had no blemish or scar like eep in the Croods. She was that perfect girl that got the most handsome princes and even ken with one smile. On the tv, there were replicas everywhere, with the perfect tan, shape, perky blonde with the cutest lips. If you didn't fall into that category you did everything to, ran miles every morning, wore more breast pads, snuggled into the skinniest jeans to project that image. A lot of us got desperate , sad and low self esteem was the next big thing. Those who gave up became the frog of the class or the sore thumb. But what really is beauty? Beauty is being confident in all that makes you who you are. You are big, short, acne, lots of cellulite, more flesh behind you or hair color like mud, you are still beautiful. Beauty isn't just a shade but a million shades, yellow, black, pink, brown , we should learn to appreciate and take pride in it. Because beauty isn't about what people think of you but what you think of yourself and what makes you happy. You are beautiful as you are! |

On the tv, there were replicas everywhere, with the perfect tan, shape, perky blonde with the cutest lips.\nIf you didn't fall into that category you did everything to, ran miles every morning, wore more breast pads, snuggled into the skinniest jeans to project that image. A lot of us got desperate , sad and low self esteem was the next big thing. Those who gave up became the frog of the class or the sore thumb.\nBut what really is beauty? | body | Growing up the topic "Periods" always got the back bench in classes, homes and even in conversations. Like myths handed down from generation to generations, the truth about periods began to fade with people adding more myths and lies about it. Few women including men knew little or nothing about it. To the average teen girl it was the red flow that always scared the crap out of us when it came on a school morning. It is still that red flow that scares the hell out of me on lecture days anyway. The little information we had coupled with no internet then was more about "don't touch a guy or you'll get pregnant". There was really no information on the importance of ones period or the details about it other than " it's what makes you a woman". An average girl or lady can't point to her ovaries except she went to a science class and paid enough attention to the topic "Reproduction". Worst of all are the myths surrounding period cramps and " why would women brag about them" like the other gender would argue. "You shouldn't say that out loud" one of my male friend once said, to help you understand how taboo it is as a topic, never to be heard of and never to be mentioned. Hush hush has pushed a lot of ladies to be quiet when they need help regarding their reproductive health. The stigma around the topic is one of the reason many ladies know little or next to nothing about how exactly the menstrual cycle is. Thanks to technology these days in which all the information is finally on pages but google is still not a doctor no matter how many health sites it has hanging. Taking away the stigma around periods would be a huge win for the gender and generations to come. One of them including sensitization of young girls right from when they can understand what periods are all about. Reassuring them its nothing to be ashamed of or be scared of. Also, a female counsellor in schools certified to educate girls on their body and all it entails as well as being ready to answer their questions to the best of their ability. Lets break the cycle of stigma |

| body | I was on my way back from the market in one of the popular yellow buses in Lagos and the bus conductor caught my attention. He was obviously too young to be jumping buses, he had tattoos all over his arms and his skin was already bleached badly. My heart ached because i have a junior brother his age and i couldn't stop imagining. If this guy had grown up in a different environment he would have turned out better. In my previous post i talked about the need for a working child services system in our country. The dangers of children unaccounted for and growing up in bad environments cannot be over emphasised. I kept starring at him all through the trip and i couldn't stop imagining what he would have become if he had gotten proper education and mentorship. That guy is one out of many other children that have been exposed to the harsh ways of life too early. This will definitely make them vulnerable to abuse and crimes in the society. During the police brutality protest that happened in the country which hoodlums came in and discredited the main purpose of the protest. Ruining and causing loss of lives and properties alike. Most of them are easy to recruit because they have become hardened and indifferent to other people caring for no one but themselves and themselves alone. Its so easy to point fingers and shame them but the truth is the truth, life has shaped them that way, a dog eat dog society. Its quite easy to sit in our comfortable homes and call them all sort of names until you have really walked in their shoes. I am not justifying their lifestyle either but i strongly believe that with the right education and mentorship these guys would have turned out better and off course our society will be a better place. |

| title | My aunts sisters cousins child |
| body | One in ten homes in Nigeria has a child that looks different from the other children. A child that wakes up before the entire house to do house chores. No one cares or minds their business when they see a very young child out on the street doing chores meant for the older class. My aunts sisters cousins child is another subtle term for a housemaid in the house. Few people treat these children like theirs but that is a one in a hundred case scenario. Wanting to enjoy the luxury of an hired hand but not ready to pay them their dues is one of the reason most people bring these little children from rural areas to their homes. Providing them clothes and feeding is the payment and if lucky perhaps an education up to the secondary school. Its so sad that at this time and age, this practice is still going on. From the average homes even to the homes of the wealthy and to most people it seems normal and unharmful. Where a nine year old child is awake as early as five in the morning to get water for the entire family and probably all day if the family consumes more water. This form of child abuse isn't paid attention because bruises and rape isn't involved. What of the emotional, physical and physiological trauma the child suffers? Making them feel less human compared to other children their age. This problem cannot be solved at once but taking steps in the right direction to kick child labour out of the country is a good way to start. One of them is an upgraded and improved child services in Nigeria, making sure to go from home to home to ensure every child is well taken care of and accounted for. We should be our brothers keeper when we notice a child working extra when he or she should be learning or playing like his or he mates. We need to start making changes now so our future leaders don't become rogues before our eyes. Just a concerned Nigeria |

| body | When i begin to think about how things turned out this year , bitter sweet emotions crawl up my heart. Just like everyone else this year was supposed to be "The Year". The year of greater exploits, breaking grounds, graduating the University and serving my father land. When corona virus spread to Nigeria, i didn't have much information on it so i took it for granted. Wasn't expecting a lockdown spree either. Leaving my hostel that weekend i packed light thinking i would be back in a few weeks. Days rolled into weeks, weeks into months and this is the eight month of staying at home. The fact i didn't take the virus serious, i had no plans of learning a skill or improving on myself. Months in and with the increasing rate of infection, the truth became glaring. Parents were home, schools were closed, churches, mosques, markets, recreational centres, the roads dried up like the desserts of the North. Although, no one in my family caught the corona virus, we did catch the love virus, learning to understand each other better and discovering a lot of neglected characters and attitudes. My parents still got their salaries but our neighbours as day workers were not so privileged. The love virus further spread to them as we shared food items with them. Other families didn't get the love virus from other people and so the hunger virus spread. The government shared palliatives but it barely reached a handful of people and with time people started to break the curfew to have food on their tables. The corona virus opened my eyes to crime in a different light, people robbing homes for food and the extreme measures people had to take during this period was heartbreaking. When the curfew was gradually being lifted, things became more expensive including transporting and eating money was almost an option. Although, before the corona virus, the Academic Staff Union of Universities had embarked on strike and schools had started to close. The federal government had their hands full with the corona virus and slowly the strike lingered a littles longer than expected. Cases of police brutality in the country sparked a nation wide protest fighting to improve things but soon was soiled by the bad eggs of the nation who saw this as an oppourtunity to vandalise and loot both government and private facilities. The sparked a wider range of activities beyond control and people lost their lives including University students that would still be alive if they had been in school and not at home due to the strike. A lot of companies could barely pay their staff and not long they began to lay off their staff, plunging families further down the poverty line in the country. Personally, when i realised i would home longer than expected i began to learn crocheting and through delivery facilities i was able to sell online without having to leave my house. Not long i started my podcast, "Rachel and Cocos" on Spreaker to air my opinions and to take the pressure off myself. Thanks to the lockdown, i started blogging here on steemit and many other skills which have made me a better person than i was before the pandemic. I probably would never have thought of blogging or even crocheting and i wouldn't have started a podcast on my own either Although 2020 didn't quite turn out the way i wanted and with few weeks to the end of the year 2020 has been a huge mountain of victories that have shaped me into a better person than i was eight months ago. |

| title | Our family |
| body | In schools, we are taught that "family is a group of people related by blood" and that has been stamped in our hearts that blood is all that is required to be family. Love, peace, unity, patience, sacrifice and perseverance are not quite necessary as the definition says. Being able to laugh when your sister tells a dry joke or not shouting at your brother even when he bombards you with a series of senseless question is part of what makes us family. If you weren"t blood related to your siblings would you guys even talk much less be friends? Another quality of family, friendship. Being there for each other regardless of the age gap, height gap, perhaps intelligence gap or even peer pressure to ignore your little siblings. Most fathers cant even recall the birthday of their children anymore, trying to make a living. "Providing them with the best in life" is the sentence of justification but children don't really know the difference between a private pool and playing in the rain as long as water is available for fun. Slaving to give your children a better life as parents isn't a crime but neglecting them in the process is. They will remember more of that money than you. Family, a long string that pulls strangers together into one. With the lockdown, a lot of couples realized they were family but had become strangers. The norm of "Good morning" and "Good night" had expired and now they were in each others faces awkwardly, wondering how they became couples in the first instance. The money drive had drawn the string of family so far that once sweethearts now barely knew what was the others best dish. Well, they were still family either way because we are bound by a certificate of marriage and blood and that's all that is needed. I'll say 'Total strangers related by blood' The narrative has changed from blood related and certificate relations. Family isn't just that, not just by bearing the same surnames. Family is a group of people related by love, understanding, patience, humility, selflessness, sacrifice and blood because you know blood is still thicker than water. Don't just be a family, create one out of wonderful memories and having fun together. Not just by portraits and matching outfits but by matching sacrifice, love and a warm heart for each other. Thank you and stay safe. |

It really a big thing to see aeroplane then and its obvious that i also sang that song. I love your dreams of traveling through out the world, although our country Nigeria don't have such connection, even the connection is there but based on your background you will be denied the opportunity. it was great reading from you. | body | <center>https://img.scooper.news/newsbackend/image/a9a9a0949b4e7cd1ba1888f4100d8fd7b7d14e91.jpg</center> ###### [image](https://img.scooper.news/newsbackend/image/a9a9a0949b4e7cd1ba1888f4100d8fd7b7d14e91.jpg) Growing up in a developing country and seeing an aeroplane fly over your home was a big de. There was a song we would sing when one flew over, and we would run like we were running after it. The sound of the aircraft would fill the entire neighbhood as well as the voices of children singing a song about it in our local dialect (yoruba) then. "Aeroplani odabo , bambi ki iya Telekom, eko meiji oyomi, oyomi o , oyomi, bam bam jigi jigi. (Bye bye aeroplane, my greetings to the pap seller) The vigour and energy we used in singing those songs fueled my desire to one day fly an aircraft across the sky with pride and a huge grin on my face. I carried that desire in my heart for a long time until one day my dad asked me about what I wanted for the future. My dad wasn't the weekday dad but the weekend dad due to the nature of his job. He came home one day and he came to my room to have a talk with me, when he asked what I wanted to become in future I was certain he was expecting the usual a doctor or a nurse as the dream of most young kids. When I replied "a pilot" , he was definitely shocked and starred at me for a while. "A pilot" he asked again "you want to leave dad" he further asked laughing. "No, I just want to travel the world" I emphasized with a wide grin on my face. Years later I realised my country didn't exactly have the facilities and for institutions that did, high cost of training and the huge connections to enrol were a thing. Coming from a middle class family, attending schools like that were mere fantasies. Then I decided to make life my sky and a different career my aircraft and keep flying as high as i can because i know one day i will travel the world, not as a pilot but as a microbiologist collecting unique microorganisms across the globe. |
