| title | Scientists Reveal the Number of Times You're Actually Conscious Each Minute |
| body | **T**wo papers released Wednesday in Neuron delve deep into the way we perceive the world, revealing that we don’t actually register much of it. Our attention systems, the authors' show, are extremely ill-equipped for modern society. Rather than take in the world in a constant stream of information, consciousness oscillates in and out of focus, meaning that what we think we know about the world has actually just been pieced together from limited information. Their estimates of how often we are actually focused suggest we don’t know much about the world at all. The findings are as much philosophical as they are scientific — enough to call into question our most basic understanding of reality into question. Both [studies](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0896627318306366) — one on humans by a team at the University of California Berkeley, and another on macaques done by scientists at Princeton University — sought to pin down how many times the human brain oscillates in and out of focus per minute. Four times every second, explains Princeton Neuroscience [Institute Ian Fiebelkorn](https://pni.princeton.edu/directory/ian-fiebelkorn), Ph.D., to Inverse, the brain stops focusing on the task at hand. That’s about 240 times a minute. **“The brain is wired to be somewhat distractible.”** “The brain is wired to be somewhat distractible,” he says. “We focus in bursts, and between those bursts we have these periods of distractibility, that’s when the brain seems to check in on the rest of the environment outside to see if there’s something important going on elsewhere. These rhythms are affecting our behavior all the time.” To understand these “rhythms of attention,” Fiebelkorn suggests imagining standing in Times Square on New Years’ Eve, surrounded by people, cars, and music. The scene presents far more sensory information than one human brain is capable of sorting through, and so, the brain deals with all of the information in two ways. First, it focuses on a single point of interest: the street corner where you might meet a friend, or Ryan Seacrest combing the crowd for interviews. Like a filmstrip, the brain takes snapshots of these moments and pieces them together into a cohesive narrative, or “perceptual cycle.” We experience that moment as continuous, but in reality, we’ve only sampled certain elements of the environment around us. It feels continuous because our brains have filled in the gaps for us, explains [Berkeley’s Knight Lab](http://knightlab.berkeley.edu/) researcher and first author Randolph Helfrich, Ph.D. to Inverse. “I think it’s more a philosophical problem that it is a scientific problem,” he says. “Because when we look at brain data we see a pattern that waxes and wanes, they’re never constant and stable. Everyone perceives the world as continuous and coherent, but the real tricky part is, how does the brain do that?” The teams behind both studies analyzed data from both human and macaque brains during a series of tasks to understand how the brain stitches together a coherent narrative when it’s only got snapshots to work with. The reason why we experience reality as a movie when it’s only a collection of pictures can be at least partially explained by our rhythms of attention. About four times every second, the brain stops taking snapshots of individual points of focus — like your friend on the corner in Times Square — and collects background information about the environment. Without you knowing it, the brain absorbs the sound of the crowd, the feeling of the freezing December air — which it later uses to stitch together a narrative of the complete Times Square Experience. *The Advantage of a Distractible Brain* Modern society tends to think of distractibility as a bad thing, Fiebelkorn says, but it might have offered early humans and our distant ancestors a huge evolutionary advantage. The brain’s natural tendency to “zoom out” and become distracted by the environment, even for just a few milliseconds, could have allowed them the time to detect the presence of a threat and react accordingly. “Say you spot a shiny red apple in a tree and you focus on that,” Fiebelkorn says. “You’re going to go and pick that apple, but you’ll want to know if there’s any larger animal with bigger teeth going after the same apple. So, having these windows of distractibility helps you to detect these stimuli you might otherwise miss.” The findings of these two papers in conjunction are powerful evidence that these rhythms are highly adaptive and have been preserved in humans and their relative species for millions of years. This hypothesis is based on the fact that the teams noticed nearly identical neural patterns of attention (the “rhythms of distractability”) in both the humans and macaques. For a trait to still be so similar in species that diverged from common ancestor billions of years ago, it very likely must provide a useful evolutionary advantage that has been preserved by natural selection. *Ancient Brains Meet Modern Multi-Tasking* But modern society, Randolph adds, has thrown a wrench into our ancient rhythms, because modern life demands that we perform all sorts of hyper-focused tasks. We perform cutting-edge scientific research, we write articles, we drive cars at high speeds on the freeway. All of these things requite intense focus, and in these cases, our distractible brains become a liability. “Think about trying to do three things at a time. You’re trying to drive, you have coffee, you’re on the phone, and all of the sudden this means that you’re the constant switching between those things. If you drop your attention, that is enough to cause an accident,” says Randolph. “Everyone is running on an attentional system that was established way before we were even the human race, so we have this really old school system that’s not as adaptive as we’d like it to be.” *Gaming Consciousness* Human attention is a precious commodity. Companies shell thousands of dollars for a billboard ad commuters speed by at 80 miles per hour or pay to have their name plastered on the side of a sports area in hopes that fans will catch a glimpse of their logo during a free throw. Given the neural data produced by these studies, this is actually a wise move. No matter how much you love the New York Knicks, the brain takes note of that Geico sign behind the bench in the lulls between its more focused moments. *“It’s the core of what makes us human somehow.”* “It’s certainly something you could see advertisers taking advantage of,” Fiebelkorn says. “Four times a second, there’s a window where you’re open to stimuli outside your initial focus. It doesn’t mean you’re going to shift your attention but if there’s something there: something very bright or blinking then in that case you would shift your attention. So it is possible, if you’re on the internet and there are ads popping up, that’s something they could take advantage of.” Advertising aside, this research makes it clear that while humans spend so much time in search of hyper-focus, it’s likely an unachievable goal. Thousands of years of the struggle for survival have wired us to be distracted. Maybe it’s time to embrace it as a fundamental part of life. Helfrich certainly thinks it is: “It’s the core of what makes us human somehow.” see: https://bit.ly/2wt2wVC |

No matter how much you love the New York Knicks, the brain takes note of that Geico sign behind the bench in the lulls between its more focused moments.\n\n*“It’s the core of what makes us human somehow.”*\n\n“It’s certainly something you could see advertisers taking advantage of,” Fiebelkorn says. “Four times a second, there’s a window where you’re open to stimuli outside your initial focus. It doesn’t mean you’re going to shift your attention but if there’s something there: something very bright or blinking then in that case you would shift your attention. So it is possible, if you’re on the internet and there are ads popping up, that’s something they could take advantage of.”\n\nAdvertising aside, this research makes it clear that while humans spend so much time in search of hyper-focus, it’s likely an unachievable goal. Thousands of years of the struggle for survival have wired us to be distracted. Maybe it’s time to embrace it as a fundamental part of life. Helfrich certainly thinks it is: “It’s the core of what makes us human somehow.”\n\nsee: https://bit.ly/2wt2wVC",

| title | Leaked Apple service document confirms new MacBook Pro keyboard is designed to fix dust problems |
| body | A recently leaked Apple service document obtained by [*MacRumors*](https://www.macrumors.com/2018/07/19/apple-confirms-2018-mbp-keyboard-prevents-debris/) confirms what many already suspected: the newly introduced silicone membranes [discovered by *iFixit*](https://ifixit.org/blog/10279/apple-macbook-keyboard-cover-up/) that are beneath the keycaps on the new MacBook Pro keyboard aren’t just there to muffle sound. They’re also there as a protective layer to block dust and debris from interfering with the sensitive butterfly mechanism that has proved so problematic for some users. When Apple announced its latest MacBook Pro updates last week, one of the more notable changes to the hardware was a third-generation version of the much-maligned butterfly keyboard. But Apple insisted that the only real difference was that [the updated models were quieter](https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/13/17569992/15-inch-macbook-pro-2018-keyboard-true-tone). Thanks to iFixit, we know that the reduced noise from the keyboards is due to the [addition of a rubber membrane](https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/13/17570538/apple-macbook-pro-keyboard-design-patent-dust-dirt-liquid-resistant-ifixit) under each key. The repair document is the first direct confirmation we’ve had from Apple that the membrane is specifically designed to protect the new keyboard from encountering the same problems as its predecessors. Per the document: *The keyboard has a membrane under the keycaps to prevent debris from entering the butterfly mechanism. The procedure for the space bar replacement has also changed from the previous model. Repair documentation and service videos will be available when keycap parts begin shipping*. Apple recently acknowledged that some users of the 2016 and 2017 MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops with earlier versions of the butterfly switches were experiencing issues with their keyboards, and it [offered a four-year extended warranty](https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/6/22/17495326/apple-macbook-pro-faulty-keyboard-repair-program-admits-issues) problem to deal with any issues. Interestingly, the new 2018 models [aren’t included](https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=66960X1514734&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fsupport%2Fkeyboard-service-program-for-macbook-and-macbook-pro%2F) in the warranty offer, and [Apple won’t be using third-generation keyboard parts](https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/16/17577478/apple-replace-macbook-pro-keyboards-third-gen-components) to repair problems on older models. That’s a shame since the ever-increasing evidence seems to point to the fact that Apple has managed to solve the keyboard problems in a more substantial way on the newer models. The only question that remains is: why won’t Apple just acknowledge that there was a problem that it fixed? The company is potentially facing class action lawsuits over the keyboard troubles, so that might at least partially explain the silence. source; https://bit.ly/2uzzRy6 |

| title | How Long Can We Live? The Limit Hasn’t Been Reached, Study Finds |
| body | https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/07/03/science/03SCI-ZIMMER1/03SCI-ZIMMER1-jumbo-v2.jpg?quality=90&auto=webp In Acciaroli, a hamlet in southern Italy, about one-in-60 residents are over the age of 90. A survey of about 4,000 Italians found that mortality rates in old age plateau around 105, suggesting that the ceiling for human lifespan has not yet been reached.CreditGianni Cipriano for The New York Times The mortality rate flattens among the oldest of the old, a study of elderly Italians concludes, suggesting that the oldest humans have not yet reached the limits of lifespan. Since 1900, average life expectancy around the globe [has more than doubled](https://ourworldindata.org/life-expectancy), thanks to better public health, sanitation and food supplies. But a new study of long-lived Italians indicates that we [have yet to reach the upper bound of human longevity](http://science.sciencemag.org/cgi/doi/10.1126/science.aat3119). “If there’s a fixed biological limit, we are not close to it,” said Elisabetta Barbi, a demographer at the University of Rome. Dr Barbi and her colleagues published their research Thursday in the journal Science. The current record for the longest human lifespan was set 21 years ago, when [Jeanne Calment, a Frenchwoman, died at the age of 122](https://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/05/world/jeanne-calment-world-s-elder-dies-at-122.html). No one has grown older since — as far as scientists know. In 2016, a team of scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx made the bold claim that Ms Calment was even more of an outlier than she seemed. They argued that humans have reached a fixed lifespan limit, which they [estimated to be about 115 years](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/06/science/maximum-lifespan-study.html). A number of critics lambasted that research. “The data set was very poor, and the statistics were profoundly flawed,” said Siegfried Hekimi, a biologist at McGill University. Anyone who studies the limits of longevity faces two major statistical challenges. There aren’t very many people who live to advanced ages and people that old often lose track of how long they’ve actually lived. “At these ages, the problem is to make sure the age is real,” said Dr Barbi. Dr Barbi and her colleagues combed through Italy’s records to find every citizen who had reached the age of 105 between 2009 and 2015. To validate their ages, the researchers tracked down their birth certificates. The team ended up with a database of 3,836 elderly Italians. The researchers tracked down death certificates for those who died in the study period and determined the rate at which various age groups were dying. It’s long been known that the death rate starts out somewhat high in infancy and falls during the early years of life. It climbs again among people in their thirties, finally [skyrocketing among those in their seventies and eighties](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db26.htm). If the death rate kept exponentially climbing in extreme old age, then human lifespan really would have the sort of limit proposed by the Einstein team in 2016. https://static01.nyt.com/images/2018/07/03/science/03SCI-ZIMMER2/03SCI-ZIMMER2-superJumbo-v3.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale Jeanne Calment set the current record for human lifespan in 1997 when she died at the age of 122. So far as scientists know, no one else has lived longer. CreditJean-Paul Pelissier/Reuters But that’s not what Dr Barbi and her colleagues found. Among extremely old Italians, they discovered, the death rate stops rising — the curve abruptly flattens into a plateau. The researchers also found that people who were born in later years have a slightly lower mortality rate when they reach 105. “The plateau is sinking over time,” said Kenneth W. Wachter, a demographer at the University of California, Berkeley, who co-authored the new study. “Improvements in mortality extend even to these extreme ages.” “We’re not approaching any maximum lifespan for humans yet,” he added. Brandon Milholland, a co-author of the study finding a limit to human lifespan, questioned the new paper. The research, he noted, was limited to just seven years in one country. “You’re reducing yourself to a narrow slice of humanity,” he said. Dr. Milholland also took issue with how the team analyzed their data. They only examined two possibilities: that the death rate continued its exponential climb, or that it turned into a flat plateau. The truth might be somewhere in between, he said: “It seems rather far-fetched that after increasing exponentially, the chance of dying should suddenly stop in its tracks.” Dr Hekimi, on the other hand, praised the study for the quality of its data and called its conclusions, “very interesting and surprising.” The new research doesn’t explain why death rates flatten out in the oldest of the old. One possibility is that some people have genes that make them frailer than others. Frail people die off sooner than more resilient ones, leaving behind a pool of tough seniors. But Dr Hekimi speculated that there might be other factors at play. Throughout our lives, our cells become damaged. We only manage to partially repair them, and over time our bodies grow weak. It’s possible that at the cellular level, very old people simply live at a slower rate. As a result, they accumulate less damage in their cells, which their bodies can repair. “This is a reasonable theory for which there is no proof,” Dr Hekimi said. “But we can find out if there is.” A flat death rate doesn’t mean that centenarians have found a fountain of youth. From one year to the next, the new study suggests, they still have a much higher chance of dying than someone in her nineties. Exactly how long centenarians live may simply be a roll of the dice each year. But even if this turns out to be the case, Jeanne Calment’s age won’t be easily matched, said Tom Kirkwood, associate dean for ageing at Newcastle University, who was not involved in the new study. “The higher the ceiling gets set as records are successively broken, the harder it gets to break it,” he said. source: https://nyti.ms/2N9WFMu |

| title | Maradona Hospitalized After Disgraceful Finger Salute In Argentina’s Win Over Nigeria |
| body | http://naijaparrot.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/27/Diego-Maradona-celebrates-the-second-goal-for-argentina-against-Nigeria.jpg Diego Maradona was taken from his seat and helped into his private box just moments after Argentina dramatically beat Nigeria 2-1 at the World Cup . The former Barcelona and Napoli star was captured on camera holding on to one person while another attempted to guide him through the door. The footballing legend looked agitated throughout. His mood was seen ranging from celebrating wildly to falling asleep, to giving a disgraceful two-fingered salute after Marcos Rojo’s late winner. The World Cup-winning legend was then treated by two paramedics in a nearby room at the end of the game. Reports in Argentina claim Maradona was then taken to hospital see: https://bit.ly/2LGA1tH https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article12800325.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/Screen-Shot-2018-06-26-at-221748JPG.jpg |

| title | Google launches a podcast app for Android with personalized recommendations |
| body | Finally taking podcasts seriously, Google today is introducing [a new standalone podcast app for Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.podcasts). The app, called simply Google Podcasts, will use Google’s recommendation algorithms in an effort to connect people with shows they might enjoy based on their listening habits. While podcasts have previously been available on Android through Google Play Music and third-party apps, Google says the company expects Podcasts to bring the form to hundreds of millions of new listeners around the world. (Google Listen, an early effort to build what was then called a “podcatcher” for Android, [was killed off in 2012](https://www.androidcentral.com/google-listen-officially-dead). “There’s still tons of room for growth when it comes to podcast listening,” said Zack Reneau-Wedeen, product manager on the app. Creating a native first-party Android app for podcasts “could as much as double worldwide listenership of podcasts overall,” he said. Google Podcasts will look familiar to anyone who has used a podcast app before. It lets you search for new podcasts, download them, and play them at your convenience. More than 2 million podcasts will be available on the app on launch day, Google says, including “all of the ones you’ve heard of.” Open the app, and a section called “For you” shows you new episodes of shows you’ve subscribed to, episodes you’ve been listening to but haven’t finished, and a list of your downloaded episodes. Scroll down, and you’ll see top and trending podcasts, both in general and by category. The podcast player has fewer fine-grained controls than you might be used to from apps like Overcast. You can’t customize the skip buttons or create playlists of podcasts to listen to, for example. The Podcasts app is integrated with Google Assistant, meaning you can search for and play podcasts wherever you have Assistant enabled. The company will sync your place in a podcast across all Google products, so if you listen to half a podcast on your way home from work, you can resume it on your Google Home once you’re back at the house. In the coming months, Google plans to add a suite of features to Podcasts that are powered by artificial intelligence. One feature will add closed captions to your podcast, so you can read along as you listen. It’s a feature that could be useful to people who are hard of hearing or for anyone who is listening in a noisy environment. (I usually miss a few minutes of the podcasts I listen to every day, thanks to a noisy subway ride.) Closed captions also mean that you’ll be able to skip ahead to see what’s coming up later in a show. Eventually, you’ll be able to read real-time live transcriptions in the language of your choice, letting you “listen” to a podcast even if you don’t speak the same tongue as the host. Google also wants to expand the number of people making podcasts. The company’s research showed that only one-quarter of podcast hosts are female, and even fewer are people of color. In an effort to diversify the field, Google formed an independent advisory board that will consider ways to promote podcast production outside of the handful of major metropolitan areas in the United States that currently dominate the field. Google will not pay any creators to make podcasts directly, the company said, but it will likely explore ways of giving podcasts from underrepresented creators extra promotion. It’s also examining ways to make recording equipment more accessible to people who can’t afford it. If you already listen to podcasts on Google Play Music, nothing will change today. But the company made it clear that it plans to focus its future efforts around podcasting in the standalone app. |

| title | Is getting rich worth it? |
| body | The proper answer to this question is 'it depends on what you give in exchange'..If someone gives off his or her sanity, inner peace, time with my family, and health, perhaps wealth would not be worth it. If one works hard but can achieve some level of healthy balance, then it probably will be. some people are predisposed to being happy regardless of their circumstances, and also that people can learn to be happy if they evaluate their motivations, predetermined thoughts patterns, or other considerations that may be preventing a positive frame of reference. Studies have shown that, while some have more than anyone has ever dreamed of in history, people in Western Society are less happy than almost any other people on the planet. It will be cool that if someone falls into wealth, It should be used in more appropriate and judicious ways by living a fulfilled life and achieving those great things that wealth affords him the opportunity to do bearing in mind that wealth not properly managed can be gone in the thin air. There are many who were tagged 'wealthy' at one time and lost it, while some understand and know the principle to sustain wealth. Let no man think highly of himself being too rich. Open your eyes and take a look at the world around you. Life is the summation of the choices you make. |

| body | **At an individual level** It is so hard for most people to appreciate what they have for most of their lives, and when we grow old, all we want to do is go back to the times we didn’t fully appreciate and no longer have the youthful energy or freedom to experience. **At a social level** That most of humanity lives in some stage of poverty and/or state of insecurity about survival - either literally in much of the developing world, or constantly stressed and one job loss away from entering poverty in the developed world, because the financial managers, politicians, and military-industrial complex who control our institutions steal wealth via the ‘silent thief’ of inflation, taxation that is then mismanaged or outright stolen, and behind the scenes wealth transfer… and most people have no idea that these are the true causes of wealth inequality. The rich get richer, while the poor have less access to healthy foods, health care, education, safe neighborhoods, etc. which makes it less likely that they and their children will thrive or even survive. Poorer people are convinced to join the army for opportunity or to ‘fight for their country’ when in fact most of the wars are fabricated for financial reasons or geopolitical imperialism, and so lives are lost and families are broken for others’ profit. All of this takes place at a grand scale that most people cannot see or understand, thereby allowing the thieves to thrive unnoticed while people focus only on the political circus run by the media, who portray political personalities and fringe social issues as the main injustices of our time. And so the frog boils slowly and eventually is eaten. |

| title | All Truly Wealthy People Know This 1 Important Financial Secret |
| body | Digital Marketing Consultant and Account Manager [Phil Segal](https://www.quora.com/profile/Phil-Segal) speaks: In an argument over money early in our marriage, I told my wife that she would always be poor. She took it very offensively - perhaps my delivery was also poor - but I was trying to explain that her habits would keep her poor. Wealthy people understand that *it isn't what you earn, it is what you keep*. Others have already commented on the sizable chunk the government (your "silent partner") skims off the top of your labor. Once you get your grubby hands on your portion, you should have noticed by now that the rest of the world is trying to relieve you of the remaining portion. Whether it's unscrupulous sales people trying to earn their own paychecks, clever marketers, outright scam artists, or just plain products and services you don't really need, our consumer society is a buffet of pitfalls and opportunities to consume your earnings. The reason wealthy people are frugal is because the high earners who weren't frugal likely don't have money anymore. You've probably heard the statistics that most people who have a windfall such as an inheritance or winning the lottery are almost always broke again within a few years. They didn't understand the principles of wealth. Sadly, most of us aren't taught those principles, so it's hard to cast blame. But the information is out there if you want it, especially in the Internet age. In my own life, I have seen easily 5+ examples of people who I have known personally and intimately, who at some point in their lives earned income far above average, owned their own businesses, and/or could have been considered wealthy. Either before I met them or during the course of my time knowing them, they were broke again. Some of them borrowed money from me during that time, and one rented a room in my house. Why? As far as I can tell, the one thing they all had in common is that they assumed their peak level of income would always continue or increase, and therefore they never saved or invested properly. In all cases, they were eventually wrong. I started from flat broke, and in fact six figures in debt. In the same period of time that I witnessed those cases, I am out of debt and have begun to grow wealth. I am by NO means wealthy, but my trend has been steady up and to the right. The difference is that I have made a concerted effort to save as much as possible from my earnings, pay down debt, and learn and experiment with investing. I believe that, barring some unforeseen occurrence (life is full of them), I will end up wealthy, because I work hard, manage my money intelligently, and learn from my mistakes. Rich Dad, Poor Dad (Robert Kiyosaki's famous book) was mostly a fluff piece for one core concept: poor people purchase obligations (debt), while wealthy people purchase assets (intrinsic value and/or income producing). Wealthy people understand that most consumer spending is essentially converting hours of their life working into money, and then taking that money and trading it for things that you don't really need or want. Or in other cases, simply not understanding where you are being screwed due to inefficiencies. You are trading your life for money, which makes you unhappy, and then you are trying to fill that hole in your heart with products or services to regain the happiness you could have already had - when you could just try to work less and be happier in the first place. But such is the insanity of consumer culture. Everyone has emotional triggers, things they consume that make them happy; if you have the means, of course you should indulge a bit and live a little. But most things people waste money on don't make them that happy. Couldn't you buy a pound of coffee that gives you a couple of weeks of coffee for $10, rather than spending $5 per cup at Starbucks? Is the incremental value of a slightly nicer car worth an extra $100-200/month? Once you realize that almost all modern consumer products are traps to take your hard-earned money, set by people who understand how to free themselves from the system and become wealthy off of your back... Well, does it make sense to do anything but get a little smarter about how you spend the money for which you traded your time? And once you've achieved wealth, does it make sense to do anything but make sure you never slide back into a place of hourly wages, near broke desperation, and all that comes with that life circumstance? I'll leave you with one more thought: that a person is "wealthy" is just a label that you are applying from you current vantage point. As you start to grow wealth, your expenses and the scope of your problems tend to become larger as well. "Mo' money, mo' problems" if you will. So a wealthy person doesn't view themselves as "out of the fire" of life in the same way as a "working poor" person believes when looking up at them; they are simply playing a bigger game, with the same rules. But they understand those rules better than you do. And then many of those people will become truly wealthy at one point, which basically means your income producing assets support your desired lifestyle. So the real question should be, given the almost certainty of remaining poor if you are not at least a bit frugal, why aren't more poor people frugal? |

| title | These 5 Habits Literally Add Years to Your Life, According to a New Harvard Study |
| body | Harvard researchers studied the lives of 123,219 men and women over 3 decades, to learn exactly how much extra time good habits can add to your life. They say there's no *fountain of youth*. But a comprehensive new Harvard University study is the latest report to break down exactly how much extra time you can get yourself on this planet if you follow a small number of **positive life habits**. None of these habits will be a surprise, but the stunning part is how the Harvard researchers claim to be able to quantify exactly how much more time you'll likely live: specifically an extra 12.1 years for men, or an extra 14 years for the women. Their research was published in April in the journal [*Circulation*](http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/early/2018/04/25/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.032047). Here's the research, the findings, the specific habits--and just how precious that extra decade-plus could be. **The research** Despite spending far more on medical care than any other country in the world, Americans have only the 31st highest life expectancy (79.3 years). In some states, it's as low as 71 or 72 years--about the same as in developing nations like Bangladesh. (Here are all 50 states by life expectancy, if you're curious where yours ranks.) So, Harvard researchers accessed the health histories of 44,354 men and 78,865 women, spanning roughly three decades, who had participated in two previous studies: the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the Nurses' Health Study. Since more than 42,000 of the study participants had died by the time the researchers accessed the data, they could now correlate the degree to which people reported practicing health habits to their total life expectancy: the 12.1 and 14 extra years we referenced above. So, what were the habits? Again, there are no real surprises, but perhaps seeing them laid out like this, specifically tied to a longer life, will motivate you to try to stick to them. **1. Don't smoke**. If you smoke, quit. If you haven't started smoking, keep it that way. Other studies have shown that on average if you smoke, you'll die seven years earlier than you otherwise would. **2. Maintain a low body mass index**. We've seen this one many times too. For example, if your waist measures more than 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women), you need to lose belly fat fast in order to add years to your life. **3. Work out for 30 minutes per day**. Again: We've seen it before. A short period of jogging each day, for example, can make your body seem nine years younger, according to another study. **4. Drink alcohol moderately**. Obviously, don't drink to excess. But other studies have found that drinking moderately improves health and longevity outcomes over not drinking at all. ("I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity," [is how the author of one recent study put it](https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/want-to-live-much-longer-a-neuroscientist-says-these-surprising-daily-habits-make-it-much-more-likely-youll-live-past-90.html).) **5. Maintain a healthy diet**. It's a bit difficult to define a healthy diet by Harvard's standards in this summary, but they describe it as having "a high diet quality score (upper 40 percent)." Of course, you probably already know what a healthy diet looks like. Start with foods that are high in [antioxidants](https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/science-says-this-common-food-can-fight-aging-and-odds-are-you-already-love-it.html). It's worth noting that the study used age 50 as a benchmark, meaning that they looked at how long people could expect to live beyond that age, depending on whether they did or did not adhere to healthy habits. It's not clear that this means that you can adopt the habits later in life and still get a similar health outcome. But it does suggest that no matter when you start focusing on your health, you'll likely have a measurable impact on the total length of your life. |

"title": "These 5 Habits Literally Add Years to Your Life, According to a New Harvard Study",
"body": "\nHarvard researchers studied the lives of 123,219 men and women over 3 decades, to learn exactly how much extra time good habits can add to your life.\n\nThey say there's no *fountain of youth*. But a comprehensive new Harvard University study is the latest report to break down exactly how much extra time you can get yourself on this planet if you follow a small number of **positive life habits**.\n\nNone of these habits will be a surprise, but the stunning part is how the Harvard researchers claim to be able to quantify exactly how much more time you'll likely live: specifically an extra 12.1 years for men, or an extra 14 years for the women.\n\nTheir research was published in April in the journal [*Circulation*](http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/early/2018/04/25/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.032047). Here's the research, the findings, the specific habits--and just how precious that extra decade-plus could be.\n\n**The research**\n\nDespite spending far more on medical care than any other country in the world, Americans have only the 31st highest life expectancy (79.3 years). In some states, it's as low as 71 or 72 years--about the same as in developing nations like Bangladesh.\n\n(Here are all 50 states by life expectancy, if you're curious where yours ranks.)\n\nSo, Harvard researchers accessed the health histories of 44,354 men and 78,865 women, spanning roughly three decades, who had participated in two previous studies: the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the Nurses' Health Study. \n\nSince more than 42,000 of the study participants had died by the time the researchers accessed the data, they could now correlate the degree to which people reported practicing health habits to their total life expectancy: the 12.1 and 14 extra years we referenced above.\n\nSo, what were the habits? Again, there are no real surprises, but perhaps seeing them laid out like this, specifically tied to a longer life, will motivate you to try to stick to them.\n\n**1. Don't smoke**. \nIf you smoke, quit. If you haven't started smoking, keep it that way. Other studies have shown that on average if you smoke, you'll die seven years earlier than you otherwise would.\n\n**2. Maintain a low body mass index**.\nWe've seen this one many times too. For example, if your waist measures more than 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women), you need to lose belly fat fast in order to add years to your life. \n\n**3. Work out for 30 minutes per day**.\nAgain: We've seen it before. A short period of jogging each day, for example, can make your body seem nine years younger, according to another study.\n\n**4. Drink alcohol moderately**.\nObviously, don't drink to excess. But other studies have found that drinking moderately improves health and longevity outcomes over not drinking at all. (\"I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity,\" [is how the author of one recent study put it](https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/want-to-live-much-longer-a-neuroscientist-says-these-surprising-daily-habits-make-it-much-more-likely-youll-live-past-90.html).) \n\n**5. Maintain a healthy diet**.\nIt's a bit difficult to define a healthy diet by Harvard's standards in this summary, but they describe it as having \"a high diet quality score (upper 40 percent).\" Of course, you probably already know what a healthy diet looks like. Start with foods that are high in [antioxidants](https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/science-says-this-common-food-can-fight-aging-and-odds-are-you-already-love-it.html). \n\nIt's worth noting that the study used age 50 as a benchmark, meaning that they looked at how long people could expect to live beyond that age, depending on whether they did or did not adhere to healthy habits.\n\nIt's not clear that this means that you can adopt the habits later in life and still get a similar health outcome. But it does suggest that no matter when you start focusing on your health, you'll likely have a measurable impact on the total length of your life.",
