Microwaves may be used to send data as well as sound. Data is sent over the air, analogous to radio waves, from one microwave station to another. Line-of-sight transmission is used in microwaves. It indicates that the signals must go in a straight line and are not able to bend. Microwave antennas or stations are often mounted on large towers or structures. Microwave stations are clustered within a 20-to-30-mile radius of one another. Each station gets a signal from the previous station and passes it on to the next. Data is moved from one location to another in this manner. It amplifies the signals and sends them to several earth-based stations. Uplink refers to the transfer of data from a ground station to a satellite. The term \"downlink\" refers to the transmission from a satellite to a ground station. The ability to transmit a big amount of data at once is a significant benefit of satellite.
