titleWho are the Israeli soldiers? Less known side of the IDF
body

If you will ever visit Israel and use the public transport most chances you will see tired looking soldiers sharing the bus or train with you. And they will have assault rifles, just like that.

The soldiers in Israel use the public transportation to go on vacations, yes it is weird. If you are going south to the Negev, they can be half of the bus passengers. Most of the Negev is a huge empty hot place and no one wants to live there. No one asks the soldiers where they want to live so most of the military bases are located in the Negev.

In the past, a lot of terror attacks happened on public transports or central bus stations. Tt some point, the government decided to just let the soldiers carry their gun home and by doing that you get a quick response to any event. The soldiers are already there and we don’t have to pay them. it works, there were several times that terror attacks were stopped by soldiers on the way home.

When you have to carry your gun AND Cannon....

OK, after you overcame the shock of armed young men walking around we can start to talk about how it is to be an IDF soldier.

So who has to join the Israeli military? girls? minorities? What is like to serve in the IDF?

No matter what your opinion on the state of Israel you have to agree it is in a tough neighborhood. It is a small country and in order to keep the presence on the borders and be ready to an emergency situation the country has to establish an obligatory service system. Man do 3-year service while the woman does 2 years unless they volunteer to a combat unit and then they do 3 years.

Man do 3-year service while the woman does 2 years unless they volunteer to a combat unit and then they do 3 years.

Most of the people understand why they are joining the military and want to do it. It is not like in other places in the world where soldiers are sent overseas, here in Israel the front line can be 10 min drive from a soldier home.

When there are rockets attacks during conflict times the front line can be safer than the soldier home. The soldier can be more worried about his family than the fact he is on the front line.

Combine it with the fact that it is a small country and there is a good chance you will meet your officer on the street or know some of his friends or his high school teacher, and you'll get special relations between commanders and soldiers.

The Israeli Melting Pot

Unlike how it seems in most Hollywood movies, in the IDF the relations between the commanders and soldiers is more like a Boy Scout or your big caring brother relations.

Less formal, less discipline

The commanders are not allowed to humiliate/hit a soldier and the relationship is based on trust and not disappointing the commanders or your friends. After basic training, you are allowed to call your commanders and officers by their first name. We don't have 'permission to speak sir' if you want to talk to your officers you just go and talk to them.

The IDF became what we call here "The Melting Pot". Because everyone has to join, whether you are rich or poor, finished high school or not and no matter what is your background, you are going to meet all kind of people in your service. People get friends all over the country, and people with low chances of meeting in real life can suddenly become best friends.

Mixing People from all backgrounds

In the army, your economic status doesn’t matter. It's not that you can buy better guns/uniforms/boots/beds. Everyone becomes equal and what matter is the character of a person. it all creates people who come from a different background to share this strong experience which creates a common story to tell, a sense of belonging and friendship that goes on to the civilian life.

So basically it is a country in which everyone is a little Rambo?

Of course................Not.

Most of the people who serve are not even in combat units. The military is a huge organization with many jobs. Because the country is small, a lot of people serve close to their homes so it's cheaper to the military to let them live with their parents. They come to the base in the morning, do their job which can be typing things on computers/cooking/truck drivers, mechanics and go back home in the evening.

Teachers, mechanics, drivers and even lifeguards!

Some soldiers serve as teachers for soldiers who didn’t graduate from high school. A soldier who didn’t finish high school can choose to spend his last months of service in a military school where he will learn math, literature or anything else he didn’t complete in high school. Some soldiers stay at the base and come home every weekend, some soldiers can stay at the base for a couple of weeks. All depends on the job.

A female soldier works as a reporter for a radio station on... a festival!

Each job gives the individual a completely different experience of "how it's to serve in the military".

You can see here an example of the effects on 18 years old teenagers after you put them in the hot desert sun for a long time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peUezSShExQ

An example of a job which takes you around the country:
An emergency instructor for schools!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy1u7U3_aK4

Hi-Tec- One of the world Elite technological organizations

Because everyone joins, it means that also the smartest teenagers of the country join. The military knows that and created units of computer geeks. They are going through courses and using the latest technologies on the market. Some of those units are world class professionals when it comes to cyber and programming. Most of these soldiers as they finish their service joins startup companies in Israel or around the world.

If they IDF was a civilian company, it could be easily in the silicon valley next to the big boys.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7n11XAYp7k

Combat Soldiers

You have tones of info across the web. google it!

Combat soldiers - Most of the time cleaning stuff.

Reserve - The weird yet professional side of the IDF

After finishing the 3 years, some people go into a reserve unit depends on the job they had in the service. If they are assigned to a reserve unit it means they will go back to the military for 1-4 weeks a year to do probably whatever they did in their service....

If the regular army has low discipline the reserve can be ridicules. Your officer might have dreadlocks because he just came back from India, the sergeant maybe is now fat, that guy became a pacifist and is not coming to the reserve anymore, the chubby lazy guy became an iron man competitor and he is now an elite soldier and so and so...Everyone dressed sloppily with a combination of civilian equipment which can be more comfortable.

So if you see a soldier that looks sloppy, unshaven and looks more like an escaping prisoner than a soldier, he is probably on reserve.

Reserve hair style

in this video you can see that the soldiers are more mature and older than teenage at their 20's:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6Va2m6S4Io

Minorities in the IDF

Bedouins

As I mentioned before, because of the political situation not all minorities are joining the IDF. The Muslim Arabs who lives inside Israel are mostly relatives with the Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank and in the surrounded countries. It can create sensitive situations and because of the historical status qu, the Muslims are not obligated to serve.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnbySS9y6PM

Druze

The Druze as a community chose to serve and be part of the state. some of them serve as high-ranking generals in the IDF. Who are the Druze you ask? Check this link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=55&v=9xp35QfJwsA

Others

There are other minorities who serve like Christians Arabs, Samaritans, and Circassians. they don't join in large numbers so they don't have cool edited videos on YouTube to share...
(Which by the way is another job you can do, video editing)

All depends on the job.
\n

\n
A female soldier works as a reporter for a radio station on... a festival!
\n
Each job gives the individual a completely different experience of \"how it's to serve in the military\".
\n
You can see here an example of the effects on 18 years old teenagers after you put them in the hot desert sun for a long time:
\n
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peUezSShExQ
\n
An example of a job which takes you around the country:
\nAn emergency instructor for schools!
\n
\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy1u7U3_aK4
\n
Hi-Tec- One of the world Elite technological organizations
\n
Because everyone joins, it means that also the smartest teenagers of the country join. The military knows that and created units of computer geeks. They are going through courses and using the latest technologies on the market. Some of those units are world class professionals when it comes to cyber and programming. Most of these soldiers as they finish their service joins startup companies in Israel or around the world.
\n
If they IDF was a civilian company, it could be easily in the silicon valley next to the big boys.
\n
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7n11XAYp7k
\n
Combat Soldiers
\n
You have tones of info across the web. google it!
\n

\n
Combat soldiers - Most of the time cleaning stuff.
\n
Reserve - The weird yet professional side of the IDF
\n
After finishing the 3 years, some people go into a reserve unit depends on the job they had in the service. If they are assigned to a reserve unit it means they will go back to the military for 1-4 weeks a year to do probably whatever they did in their service....
\n
\nIf the regular army has low discipline the reserve can be ridicules.
\n
\nSo if you see a soldier that looks sloppy, unshaven and looks more like an escaping prisoner than a soldier, he is probably on reserve.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Reserve hair style
\n
in this video you can see that the soldiers are more mature and older than teenage at their 20's:
\n
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6Va2m6S4Io
\n
Minorities in the IDF
\n
Bedouins
\n
As I mentioned before, because of the political situation not all minorities are joining the IDF. The Muslim Arabs who lives inside Israel are mostly relatives with the Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank and in the surrounded countries. It can create sensitive situations and because of the historical status qu, the Muslims are not obligated to serve.
\n
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnbySS9y6PM
\n
Druze
\n
The Druze as a community chose to serve and be part of the state. some of them serve as high-ranking generals in the IDF. Who are the Druze you ask? Check this link.
\n
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=55&v=9xp35QfJwsA
\n
Others
\n
There are other minorities who serve like Christians Arabs, Samaritans, and Circassians. they don't join in large numbers so they don't have cool edited videos on YouTube to share...
\n(Which by the way is another job you can do, video editing)
\n
\n
\n
",

titleThings and tips you should know before coming to Israel
body

This article is from my traveling Israel blog: www.aviway.net

What is the best travel guide book to Israel?

Personally, I don't travel with books. I can get everything I need on the web and never felt like carrying a book with me. This is why I built a website and why I didn't write a book. But in case you like to have a book with you just for the tons of extra info, read it on the rides or in bed, and for the maps, I will recommend the Insight Guides to Israel. From all the guidebooks about this country, it is the one I found the most authentic, accurate, and with valuable info. But thank God you found this site, now you don't have to get it.

Do I need to get a Visa before traveling to Israel?

Citizens of many countries can get a free 90 days tourist visa upon arrival. You can check here for your country. Also possible here.

How Big Is Israel?

Israel from north to south is around 450 km,
East to West on the widest point is around 110km. From the Mediterranean Sea to Qalqilia in the west bank is around 16km.Just check the map.

What languages I might find useful during my stay in Israel?

"Bad English was the second language of Israel and bad Hebrew, of course, remained the national language". ~ George Mikes (The Prophet Motive)

Hebrew- official main spoken language.

Arabic- second official language. Spoken by minorities like Arabs and Druzes. All the street sign are also in Arabic.

English- most people will speak it at some level and will be able to communicate. Younger people will have better English. Religious people will usually won't have a good English.
(Most people learn English by watching TV or using computer and it is less popular among religious people) most of the street signs will also have English on them.

Russian- there are around 1 million immigrants from the ex-soviet Union countries. Most chances you will encounter them along the way.

French- after the recent events and terror attacks in France there is increasing numbers of Jews emigrating from France to Israel. In Tel Aviv you could see French bakeries and signs, also many in Jerusalem and the cities of Netanya and Ashdod.

Is it expensive to visit Israel?

You might be surprised but Israel is not a cheap travel destination.
you can check here the rate of the Israeli currency which is called Shekel. The official acronym for it is ILS but it is common to use also NIS.prices for example:

Hostel dorm- 70-100 ILS.

Pita with falafel( cheap street food) – 10-18 ILS.

Bus from TLV to Jerusalem- 16 ILS.

But to from TLV to Eilat (southern city of Israel)- 80 ILS.

Half a liter draught beer in a bar- 30 ILS (yea that sucks I know…)

Entering a nature reserve or a national park- 30 ILS. Look in the traveling Israel cheap guide.

For better comparison check this cool page. It allows you to compare the cost of living and much more between countries.

When is the best time to visit Israel?

Well, it depends on what you are looking for:

Spring- March/April.
Will be the best time to visit for all purposes.
It's not too hot, you can visit the desert, the mountain area is blooming and green and the Mediterranean is not too cold for a swim. Low chance to rain.

Autumn- October-November.
Like spring, good for all purpose. The scenery in the north is dry and yellow, less beautiful than the spring.

Summer-May-September.
Best for the beaches, if you are looking for a short beach holiday on the shores of Tel Aviv or Eilat while walking with a T-shirts and sandals all day. The desert will be too hot for any real outdoor activity( maybe except for Mitzpe Ramon). Most of the scenery will be yellow and dry.
North of the country can be suited for outdoor activities. Although it will be still very hot.

Winter- December-February.
Best time to explore the desert. Although it can be cold in the desert and sometimes there is a chance for floods, you will have to check the forecast before you do any outdoor activity. Beaches of the Mediterranean will be too cold for a swim. in Eilat, the water will be chilled, ok for short baths.

What type of electrical sockets is being used in Israel?

Israel is using its own standard type of socket with a voltage of 220V/50Hz. The socket has 3 rounded holes. As long as you are from Europe/Asia you are fine with the voltage. if traveling from the US/Canada you will need a voltage converter. If your plug looks different from the ones below, you will probably need a converter.

If you are not sure if you need an adaptor or not, if you travel a lot, always good to have an international adaptor for every corner in the world.

Is It Safe To Come To Israel?

In Israel, you can walk anywhere alone at any time of the day, even if you are a girl. The most aggressive thing that will probably happen to you is people trying to sell you stuff once they identify you as a tourist. We don’t have armed robbers and guns, We have other stuff, we have terror and wars.

-Hey! come back! where you are running?! come back! Let me finish!

So from time to time in this unstable region, small conflict erupts for many reasons, each one with its unique characters and problems. if something is going on, it will be probably on the news. Most popular Israeli news website to get updates:

Remember that as a tourist, you are not a target. If you are already here and something happens, it's still OK. Most chances it won't be a full-scale war. You could decide to keep traveling in an area which is remote from the problems or leave. In areas which are far from the specific conflict zone life continue as normal.Oh, and you will see soldiers using public transport which is quite absurd and funny.

How is the public transport in Israel?

Check the public transport page.

Some General Insights About Israel:

Most of the time when people think of Israel they think of Religion, Conflicts, and desert, not necessarily in that order.
\n
Do I need to get a Visa before traveling to Israel?
\n
Citizens of many countries can get a free 90 days tourist visa upon arrival. You can check here for your country. Also possible here.
\n
How Big Is Israel?
\n
Israel from north to south is around 450 km,
\nEast to West on the widest point is around 110km. From the Mediterranean Sea to Qalqilia in the west bank is around 16km.Just check the map.
\n
What languages I might find useful during my stay in Israel?
\n
\"Bad English was the second language of Israel and bad Hebrew, of course, remained the national language\". ~ George Mikes (The Prophet Motive)
\n
\n
Hebrew- official main spoken language.
\n
Arabic- second official language. Spoken by minorities like Arabs and Druzes. All the street sign are also in Arabic.
\n
English- most people will speak it at some level and will be able to communicate. Younger people will have better English. Religious people will usually won't have a good English.
\n(Most people learn English by watching TV or using computer and it is less popular among religious people) most of the street signs will also have English on them.
\n
Russian- there are around 1 million immigrants from the ex-soviet Union countries. Most chances you will encounter them along the way.
\n
French- after the recent events and terror attacks in France there is increasing numbers of Jews emigrating from France to Israel. In Tel Aviv you could see French bakeries and signs, also many in Jerusalem and the cities of Netanya and Ashdod.
\n
\n
Is it expensive to visit Israel?
\n
You might be surprised but Israel is not a cheap travel destination.
\nyou can check here the rate of the Israeli currency which is called Shekel. The official acronym for it is ILS but it is common to use also NIS.prices for example:
\n
\n
Hostel dorm- 70-100 ILS.
\n
Pita with falafel( cheap street food) – 10-18 ILS.
\n
Bus from TLV to Jerusalem- 16 ILS.
\n
But to from TLV to Eilat (southern city of Israel)- 80 ILS.
\n
Half a liter draught beer in a bar- 30 ILS (yea that sucks I know…)
\n
Entering a nature reserve or a national park- 30 ILS. Look in the traveling Israel cheap guide.
\n
\n
For better comparison check this cool page. It allows you to compare the cost of living and much more between countries.
\n
When is the best time to visit Israel?
\n
Well, it depends on what you are looking for:
\n
\n
Spring- March/April.
\nWill be the best time to visit for all purposes.
\nIt's not too hot, you can visit the desert, the mountain area is blooming and green and the Mediterranean is not too cold for a swim. Low chance to rain.
\n
Autumn- October-November.
\nLike spring, good for all purpose. The scenery in the north is dry and yellow, less beautiful than the spring.
\n
Summer-May-September.
\nBest for the beaches, if you are looking for a short beach holiday on the shores of Tel Aviv or Eilat while walking with a T-shirts and sandals all day. The desert will be too hot for any real outdoor activity( maybe except for Mitzpe Ramon). Most of the scenery will be yellow and dry.
\nNorth of the country can be suited for outdoor activities. Although it will be still very hot.
\n
Winter- December-February.
\nBest time to explore the desert. Although it can be cold in the desert and sometimes there is a chance for floods, you will have to check the forecast before you do any outdoor activity. Beaches of the Mediterranean will be too cold for a swim. in Eilat, the water will be chilled, ok for short baths.
\n
\n
What type of electrical sockets is being used in Israel?
\n
Israel is using its own standard type of socket with a voltage of 220V/50Hz. The socket has 3 rounded holes. As long as you are from Europe/Asia you are fine with the voltage. if traveling from the US/Canada you will need a voltage converter. If your plug looks different from the ones below, you will probably need a converter.
\n
If you are not sure if you need an adaptor or not, if you travel a lot, always good to have an international adaptor for every corner in the world.
\n
\nIs It Safe To Come To Israel?
\n
In Israel, you can walk anywhere alone at any time of the day, even if you are a girl. The most aggressive thing that will probably happen to you is people trying to sell you stuff once they identify you as a tourist. We don’t have armed robbers and guns, We have other stuff, we have terror and wars.
\n
\n-Hey! come back! where you are running?! come back! Let me finish!
\n
\nSo from time to time in this unstable region, small conflict erupts for many reasons, each one with its unique characters and problems. if something is going on, it will be probably on the news. Most popular Israeli news website to get updates:
\n
\nRemember that as a tourist, you are not a target.
\n
How is the public transport in Israel?
\n

\n
Check the public transport page.
\n
Some General Insights About Israel:
\n
Most of the time when people think of Israel they think of Religion, Conflicts, and desert, not necessarily in that order. For the currency rate check here.

Certified Diver:

If you are an experienced diver and want to go diving in Eilat, you can rent full diving equipment to a whole day for around 150 ILS. Some clubs will rent gear for 120 ILS and every tank will be charged for 10 ILS, some clubs will rent full gear with unlimited tanks for 160 ILS. Some will include boots ( which are recommended), some will include a computer. see my list of favorites diving clubs below.A guided dive (fun dive) is around 120 ILS.

Learn to dive in Eilat -Diving Courses:

Open water course is around 1200 ILS.
Open water + advanced is around 1800-2100 ILS.
Courses usually include accommodation. Some courses include a visit to the underwater observatory, highly recommended.Learn to dive in Eilat is one of the best places in the world:

If you will take a course you will understand that this sign actually means that everything goes according to plan.

Sea conditions are very good all the year. I was assisting courses in Koh Tao Thailand and saw people on their first dive going into almost no visibility water, getting lost and having a bad experience.

The regulations in Israel are stricter about diving. In order to get you out as a more experienced diver, you get an extra dive in the open water course.

In most of the diving clubs, an integral part of the course is visiting the underwater observatory and hearing lectures about the marine life. No extra pay for that, and it is really awesome.

Because of the above, open water course in Eilat takes 5 days and not 4 like in most places around the world.

Diving in Eilat Is More Strict:

Bluespotted cornetfish. One of the weirdest creatures around.

In order to rent equipment or go on a fun dive with an instructor, you will have to:

Show a valid insurance which includes the activity of diving. If you don’t have one you can do it there. diving insurance in Eilat cost around 150-200 ILS for a year.

Show diving certifications.

If you didn’t dive for more than 6 months you will have to do a refreshment dive. It means you will go over the basic skills of diving (clearing mask, finding the regulator…) and go for a dive with an instructor. during the dive, the instructor check your buoyancy to see if you are a hazard to the coral reef. As long as you are not all over the place you will pass.

Have your log book if you want to avoid this refreshment dive.

Important TIP:

Have diving booties. The shores are rocky and getting in and out with all the equipment barefoot is not fun, if there are waves you will have to crawl out of the water (first-hand experience).

Where Are The Diving Sites In Eilat?

The diving sites and diving clubs are located on the southern coastline. Most of the diving clubs are located in Almog beach, next to the nature reserve.

My 3 Best diving clubs in Eilat:

Aqua Sport (PADI) – On the map.
One of the first diving clubs in Eilat, maybe that’s why they have the best beach in Eilat. there is a bar, a restaurant, and accommodation option in the club compound. titleUltra-Orthodox Jews? Haredim? What does it all mean?!
body

To all the people who are wondering who are those "Men in Black Jews"
From my traveling Israel site : www.aviway.net

Some think that the men wearing black suits and hats are orthodox while the men dressing casually are not, this is not true, They are all Orthodox. Like you already know (or will start to learn), everything about Judaism is complex. There are many commandments and rituals and it all leads to several approaches and many arguments inside the Jewish world. As we like to say here: If there are 2 Jews, there are 3 opinions. you can find a lot of information about Judaism and the differences between the different groups, but I’ll try to sum it up for you here.

Unlike Christianity where the differences between Orthodox, Catholics, and Protestants can be quite big with different holy dates, prayers, and beliefs. Similar in Islam between Sunnis and Shias in Islam. A religious Jew who wears a black suit, one who wear just casual clothes will all celebrate the same holidays on the same dates, say the same prayers, and can pray together in a synagogue. Although, because of their different life perspectives and political views, they’ll usually live in separate communities.

In Hebrew - Haredim (חרדים)

Generally, the ones wearing black clothes are called Haredim, meaning afraid or anxious. This name refers to their modern lifestyles in reform. They choose to stay in their communities and avoid the influence of the outside world. Being conservative is part of their ideology and wearing their old-fashioned clothes is a way to distinguish themselves from their environment. Wearing black is a color that isn’t prominent and it’s modest.

Hasidim vs Mitnagdim - Soul VS Brain

Among the Haredim, the first differences will be between Hasidim and Mitnagdim.
Very generally, the Hasidim want to make the religion more approachable to people. Judaism is a lot about studying, being clever, and understanding some very complex ideas.

Some spend the whole day and whole night analyzing texts and studying. In the 18 century, there was a big rabbi who started to make advanced ideas in Judaism, like Kabbalah, more approachable to people. He communicated that worshiping God is not only about studying but also about daily acts you do in the physical world.

Slowly, slowly this movement grew and appealed to many. Not everyone is born smart or capable of studying all day complex texts. The focus here is not on knowledge and analytical ability, but more on good intentions and being passionate about God and prayers. For example, you can have vast knowledge and good studying ability, but if you live and pray in a mechanical way without a soul, it's pointless. The Hasidim will say that a person who prays passionately with all of his heart is still close to God. The Mitnagdim will say that a prayer without knowledge is empty, and with a lack of knowledge, you will forget how to do it properly…Hasidim will also make their celebrations big, with alcohol dancing and a lot of toasts. Mitnagdim represents the classical approach to Judaism. They are called opposites (Mitnagdim) because they oppose the rise of the Hasidic movement. They are also called Litaim, (meaning Lithuanians in Hebrew) because some of their great rabbis come from Lithuania.Oh, and did I mentioned that the Hasidim split into subgroups depending on their Rabbi, ideology, and location?

A documentary of one of the most famous Litaim yeshiva (school):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ3JbpEf67c

Short Tales:

When the Messiah will come, the Lita'im will run to him with some scriptures and ask him about all the things they don't understand. The Hassidim will run to him with a bottle of vodka containing the last few drops...

A Hasid and a Litai are having an argument about which Rabbi is greater. The Litai… say “If the Messiah comes and says we’re right, what will your Rabbi do?”
The Hasidim say “My rabbi will stop doing the Hasidic traditions and will sit all day and do nothing except study the Torah. I'm sure that in 10 years he will be as good as your rabbi.” “And what if the Messiah will say that the Hassidim are right? What your rabbi will do?” The Litai… answered “Well my rabbi will drop all of his studying and will start to focus on the Hassidic way of life. After 10 years, I’m sure he will be good as your rabbi.” The Hasid answered, “maybe, but to be a simple man like my rabbi I don’t think 10 years is enough.”

Anti-Zionism vs Assimilation

Some of Hassidim like “Neturei Karta” or “Satmer” are anti-Zionist and against the state of Israel. According to their view, God punished the Jews by expelling them 2000 years ago and only God will establish a new Jewish state. And besides, they can’t accept that the state is not a religious state. They don’t vote, they try to settle things inside the community and avoid any connection with the state Institutes. they are also openly siding with the hostile countries to Israel. On the other hand, in recent years, some of the communities have begun to take part in building the state and get closer to the rest of Israeli society, and some are joining the military. There is 1 battalion of Haredim. I generalize very much and it’s much more complex, but these are the basics.
you can read more on this page on this site.

A Neturei-Karta Hassidim. Jews but not Zionists.

The Party People

There is one group of Hasidim which you will probably meet even if you don’t go to a religious area. Theycan be found even in the center of Tel Aviv next to club entrances in remote areas of the desert or in the Israeli version of burning man. The Hasidim of Breslev. You will see a bunch of religious Jews coming in big vans with huge speakers playing hardcore trance or western hits translated into Hebrew, singing about their rabbi and about being happy. As a short generalization, one of their core ideological ideas is to spread the name and teachings of their rabbi and always be happy with a smile no matter what.
\n
\nUnlike Christianity where the differences between Orthodox, Catholics, and Protestants can be quite big with different holy dates, prayers, and beliefs.
\n
In Hebrew - Haredim (חרדים)
\n
Generally, the ones wearing black clothes are called Haredim, meaning afraid or anxious. This name refers to their modern lifestyles in reform. They choose to stay in their communities and avoid the influence of the outside world. Being conservative is part of their ideology and wearing their old-fashioned clothes is a way to distinguish themselves from their environment. Wearing black is a color that isn’t prominent and it’s modest.
\n
Hasidim vs Mitnagdim - Soul VS Brain
\n
Among the Haredim, the first differences will be between Hasidim and Mitnagdim.
\nVery generally, the Hasidim want to make the religion more approachable to people. Judaism is a lot about studying, being clever, and understanding some very complex ideas.
\n
\nSome spend the whole day and whole night analyzing texts and studying. In the 18 century, there was a big rabbi who started to make advanced ideas in Judaism, like Kabbalah, more approachable to people. He communicated that worshiping God is not only about studying but also about daily acts you do in the physical world.
\n
\nSlowly, slowly this movement grew and appealed to many.
\n
\nA documentary of one of the most famous Litaim yeshiva (school):
\n
\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ3JbpEf67c
\n
Short Tales:
\n
\n
When the Messiah will come, the Lita'im will run to him with some scriptures and ask him about all the things they don't understand. The Hassidim will run to him with a bottle of vodka containing the last few drops...
\n
\n
A Hasid and a Litai are having an argument about which Rabbi is greater. The Litai… say “If the Messiah comes and says we’re right, what will your Rabbi do?”
\nThe Hasidim say “My rabbi will stop doing the Hasidic traditions and will sit all day and do nothing except study the Torah.
\n
\n
Anti-Zionism vs Assimilation
\n
\nyou can read more on this page on this site.
\n
\n
\n
A Neturei-Karta Hassidim. Jews but not Zionists.
\n
\n
The Party People
\n
There is one group of Hasidim which you will probably meet even if you don’t go to a religious area. Theycan be found even in the center of Tel Aviv next to club entrances in remote areas of the desert or in the Israeli version of burning man. The Hasidim of Breslev. You will see a bunch of religious Jews coming in big vans with huge speakers playing hardcore trance or western hits translated into Hebrew, singing about their rabbi and about being happy. As a short generalization, one of their core ideological ideas is to spread the name and teachings of their rabbi and always be happy with a smile no matter what. His name was Nachman and he lived in Uman, Ukraine. Their slogan is “na nach Nachman me-Uman” and it’s supposed to be a quote from a mysterious letter one of the recent rabbis found that was written by Nachman himself.
\n
\njust watch it and get the idea:
\n
\nhttps://youtu.be/h8bbZBJKLdE
\n
Dancing with soldiers:
\n
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR7Q45znFJI&t=1m19s
\n
What is actually going on there?
\n
well, they are not part of the military of course. they see it as a duty to make the soldiers happy. they usually sneak into training grounds or rally points before any officer is noticing. having a short rave with the soldiers who are just waiting for something to break the gray depressing military daily life routine.the white head cover is giving by the Breslev and not some military symbol.Don’t get it wrong.

Their slogan is “na nach Nachman me-Uman” and it’s supposed to be a quote from a mysterious letter one of the recent rabbis found that was written by Nachman himself.

just watch it and get the idea:

https://youtu.be/h8bbZBJKLdE

Dancing with soldiers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR7Q45znFJI&t=1m19s

What is actually going on there?

well, they are not part of the military of course. they see it as a duty to make the soldiers happy. they usually sneak into training grounds or rally points before any officer is noticing. having a short rave with the soldiers who are just waiting for something to break the gray depressing military daily life routine.the white head cover is giving by the Breslev and not some military symbol.Don’t get it wrong. It’s only one part of their life and most of the time they are studying scriptures, keeping commandments and living a very developed community life.

Why Ultra-Orthodox wear those black clothes?

The clothes are derived from traditions, the desire to be distinct from the environment, geographic origin, and historical laws that were passed upon the Jews in their countries in Europe.

The Litaim cloths:

from the 19-century wear suits. They had a bad economic situation in the past and they wanted to increase their value in their own eyes and their self-esteem. They started to wear suits to give themselves the look and feel of honorable people despite their situation, and this style stays with them till today. It’s just normal suits that they can buy in any fashion shop around the world.

Litaim in summer

The Hasidim cloths:

will be more conservative with their clothes. Each Hasidic movement has its own style. Most of the time their clothes look like something out of an Eastern European fashion catalog of the 18 century. High socks, all kind of coats, and a big fur hat on holidays that’s usually about only in Haredim shops. What’s the story about the hat? It is called a shtreimel and here are a few stories about it:

The king of Poland made a law that said that on their holidays, Jews have to wear the tail of an un-pure animal on their hat. So the Jews tried to make something fancy out of it and it became the fancy holiday hat and the Tzar of Russia prohibited Jews from wearing the kippah. So the Jews put fur around the kippah to hide it, and it also suited the cold weather.

A Hassid with shtreimel

Payot

why they have this weird long hair coming from the side of their head?
Well, the simple answer is because its written in the bible. The complex one is here, and it is not even the whole explanation

Hassidic children with Payot

In this video you can see a mix of everyone.
