titleSupport & Resistance bands used in Technical Analysis
bodyThe concept of support and resistance is a key cornerstone for technical analysis and it also has strong ties to the behavioral finance concept of 'anchoring'. In technical analysis, for markets that are ranging (as opposed to trending), the concept of support and resistance lends itself to the following axioms 1) In a ranging market, wait for a break out, there is no need to anticapte it. In fact, you should probably be fading breakouts 1a) If there is a false breakout, look for prices to retrace back into the range 2) Once a breakout occurs, previous resistance becomes support and vice versa. 3) Once a breakout occurs you can use a combination of the time spent within the range and the range size as references values to project profit levels for breakout trades. Lets look at the following chart of the stock EEM for some concrete examples ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWJXUQFvswPCxBsRNX9rdEzSuenYx1Erna9hsunV8CkvD/image.png) We can see that for several years the price traded within a range of $36 -$44. Then in 2016 prices broke to the downside for a brief period, followed by a strong up move in 2017. In 2018 prices touched the previous period high ~52 and have since retraced back below previous resistance (which should have acted as support ~45). For the period between 2012 and 2015, a trader would have been well served buying range lows and selling range highs. But starting in mid 2015 this strategy stopped working. Luckily if you had been holding an offside long position, prices retraced in 2nd half of the year and gave you an exit opportunity close to your entry point. From there into early 2016 there was a very sharp selloff of almost $10, about equal to the $10 range size that existed from 2011-2015. While it would have been tough to go all in long, just by looking at the chart, shorts should have been taking profits at that level. Once prices rebounded back into the old range support, in mid 2016, that should have been a sign that the 2016 breakout was a false one and traders should have been looking for a move to the other range extreme, which occurred in 2017. In early 2018, prices tested the all time highs but failed. While a good trade set up was presented to buy at the previous resistance levels around $45-46, any traders who did so are currently offside. Hence why traders always need to have a stop loss, and with all technical analysis, its never perfect. My personal preference of the current set up would be to get very long ~ $36 and if not, wait for prices to go above $46 as confirmation that the recent sell off is done and then go long. Short may be added but should have tight stop losses and look for a move below $40

titleThis week in Crypto - an interactive summary
bodyBelow is a horizontal bar chart of the price change of the top Crytpo tokens/coin and their cumulative price change over the past week. I like to see how prices moved between all the coins, as you can see where the correlations are (binance and iota seem to be doing thier own thing, as does tron usually) and also see if there were any price spikes on one day that were quickly reversed. While NEO and NEM had big moves, so far only NEO seems to be holding onto most of its gains, though not going any higher, while NEM looks to be retracing part of the early week gains. Note the size of the circle at the end of the bar chart is proportionate to the market cap size of the given crypto. Unforuntaly given the size of bitcoin and ethereum relative to all the rest it provides little value, but I do like how the size of the circle gives you one extra data point without making the chart much harder to interpret. Happy trading ![lilipop_gif.gif](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPyUMEkTZX1hTZfWXnwK3ZuLXYseGSXZwcAgvcHC9cYE9/lilipop_gif.gif)

titleBeginners guide to Bitcoin Technical Analysis
bodyIf you've ever wanted to learn a bit about technical analysis but were intimiated by all the lines and fancy words some people like to use, you found the right article ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTzbAj97WBU59c5Lvfne27jFsyvvHtSitVj35LcPFL7NG/image.png) # Trends in Prices In my humble opinion technical analysis is mainly about analyzing trends. Prices can go up, they can go down or they can go sideways. There are different way to trade and make money in all markets, though most investors prefer trending markets (though surprisingly not all experienced traders like trends). What is a trend. Well a good classical definition is higher highs and higher lows for an uptrend or lower lows and lower highs in a down trend ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWv9y4vLUe869XYjaCQKi3HFSZJ2qKLdj2zSPw7rQLPFL/image.png) Of course images on the internet or what someone shows you as advertising to join their trading group are never as clear cut as the images below. But the definition stands. # New Highs and Lows If there is a an up trend in prices, the market should be making new highs. New highs are just prices that are above some old high level. Lots of traders call these 'breakouts' and like to trade them. We'll leave out specific trading strategies for now, but lets conclude that for an trend we need a series of higher highs and higher lows. Inasmuch we need to see new highs being made. If a market is trending it will make new highs periodically. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmS4xt2Qj6TKekCry4zj56FxLnmuCMacyPjmsoJJ9aeG6g/image.png) # Know your time frame This is one area I see lots of newbies making big time mistakes. If you are day trading, yes you need to look at 5min intervals or candles, but if you are investing for the next few years, please do not focus on the noise. Take a step back and look at the big picture. Look at a chart from the past 1 or 2 years please # Today's Example - Bitcoin ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmchVQDCcRwLf35e88zcHMjjP23JX79EBkma8NyK2uTTS5/image.png) We can see from the current chart, very simple that prices are no longer making highs and we'd be hard pressed to say we are still in an uptrend. That doesnt mean we are in a down trend, bc prices are not making new "lower lows" its just means that for now, the trend up isnt very strong. Dont over complicate things, keep it simple. Thats the long term view Now of course if you are a trader, or want to invest in bitcoin, you could zoom in and in order to find some trade setups # The traders set up - 4h Chart ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWHFgnaoGx5hV3syg9CKKxcctijJeRMhZFDejP6HhDAQq/image.png) Again we have another down trend, however this time we see pretty clearly where the breaking point is, around 7600, so if prices go above that level, the downtrend, would be invalidated. # A brief word on drawing lines Too many people get bogged down trying to draw the most perfect trend line. From this high to that one. Its not about bieng exact, its about understanding whats going on, especially when we are dealing with bitcoin and other crypto If you liked today's post let me know and I'll be sure to share more, including topics on support and resistance, moving averages, price patterns and of course different market's like range boud trading and reversals. And also how to scan the crypto market to find new winners like Steem # Up? Down? maybe sideways? ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmanKZAKrgNiiAscbRuZJcj9fLFg5ytLXTss4wtdQovuYX/image.png)

Its not about bieng exact, its about understanding whats going on, especially when we are dealing with bitcoin and other crypto\n\nIf you liked today's post let me know and I'll be sure to share more, including topics on support and resistance, moving averages, price patterns and of course different market's like range boud trading and reversals. And also how to scan the crypto market to find new winners like Steem\n\n# Up? Down? maybe sideways?\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmanKZAKrgNiiAscbRuZJcj9fLFg5ytLXTss4wtdQovuYX/image.png)",

titleWhat does it mean to trade Global Macro and how does that relate to Machine Learning
bodyA short post today, June 19th, given the recent movements in FX after some trade tensions from Trump & China. In my earlier days trading I used to gravitate to charts or balance sheets or cashflow statements, depending on what I was investing in. As my experience has grown, I have not forgotten how to dig into a topic, but instead like to frame most of my investments as a mosaic, incorporating a little bit of X, Y and Z. Of course each investment has their own factors that need to be taken account of and that's the secret sauce. Knowing what matters and what doesn't. Even more so in today's information overloaded world. With that introduction I'd like to give a brief overview of what many people call 'global macro' investing or trading. For some, global macro is a catch all term that means you can and do invest in just about anything that is liquid. Global equity indexes, interest rate derivatives in G10 currencies, FX and some commodities are the usual suspects. But while its easy to go down the rabbit hole and try to understand each asset class, the classic global macro investor tries to look at the big picture, see what asset classes should do well/poorly and then look for trades. For example, today we have some trade tensions. The market is expressing its concern via FX mostly, with emerging market currencies down quite significantly in the past 3 months (you pick, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, South Africa, Indonesia) along with Australia and Canada, currencies that tend to trade with a high beta, or correlation, to global trade and more importantly global trade sentiment. So how does a global macro investor, given thier world view, evaluate an investment or trade. Well today they often rely upon quantitative statistics to give a rough idea if the security/instrument they are buying is over or undervalued. They might not be a fundamental expert, but they try to capture the main elements. X, Y, Z. Sticking with the current example, lets take a look at a few Emerging Market currencies, the Brazilian Real, Turkish Lira, Russian Ruble, along with Canada and Australia Dollar in the next series of posts. For FX, the most important drivers tend to be interest rate differentials (often short term but not always), current account balances and monetary policy direction. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPt4pURgwgzxUYd2MZK34sc7zTTQn4w7gyWLHeupRAdPD/image.png) In the chart below, I show the price of the South African Rand (ZAR) in Yellow vs the Yield on the 5 year government of South Africa bond. Notice the tight correlation. Often the ZAR will lead at major levels its good to know where rates are. Notice that currently rates have blown out, back to levels in mid 2016 (they hit 9.5% in 2016) so in my opnion either something is very wrong with South Africa today or markets are getting ahead of themselves. Remember bond guys are usually the smartest in the room, so pay attention to interest rates. In the next chart, we take a look at another important variable, the current account balance of Turkey. As you can see they have consistently ran a large current account defect, which means they are vulnerable to outside funding conditions. Large current account deficit countries are often the first and hardest hit when trade worries suffer and or dollar funding conditions tighten, both of which are occurring now. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSRg13euommP3hWp1p1fMb5BUbheqjrfppomJQR4EGQ4L/image.png) The last currency we are going to discuss today is the Russian Ruble. As we all know, Russia is not afraid to get involved politically in international affairs and financial markets often have a love/hate relationship with the grizzly bear. Any easy way to get a feel for what markets see as political risk can be to take a look at the 5 Year CDS on Russian bonds. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdvN8FSMExNoxCNgnznHECGxowvf76CS6N5TBNvJLCWF8/image.png) In the chart below we see the CDS in white vs the Ruble in Orange. In 2014-2015 with the Ukraine/Crimea sage, financial markets got very worries and thus pushed Russian CDS spreads up very high (along with falling oil prices) but since then, the CDS price has come down until just about a few months ago when it started creeping back up # Putting it all togeather The skilled macro investor understands what variables to look at, but more importantly they understand what variables matters today. Machine learning models are very good at determining what variables effected outcomes in the past, but since markets are dynamic, the real skill is not figuring what worked before but understanding the narrative today in order to make decisions on what factors will influence tomorrow's prices.

"title": "What does it mean to trade Global Macro and how does that related to Machine Learning",
"body": "A short post today, June 19th, given the recent movements in FX after some trade tensions from Trump & China. \n\nWith that introduction I'd like to give a brief overview of what many people call 'global macro' investing or trading. \n\nFor example, today we have some trade tensions. \n\nSo how does a global macro investor, given thier world view, evaluate an investment or trade. \n\nFor FX, the most important drivers tend to be interest rate differentials (often short term but not always), current account balances and monetary policy direction. \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPt4pURgwgzxUYd2MZK34sc7zTTQn4w7gyWLHeupRAdPD/image.png)\n \nIn the chart below, I show the price of the South African Rand (ZAR) in Yellow vs the Yield on the 5 year government of South Africa bond. Notice the tight correlation. Often the ZAR will lead at major levels its good to know where rates are. \nNotice that currently rates have blown out, back to levels in mid 2016 (they hit 9.5% in 2016) so in my opnion either something is very wrong with South Africa today or markets are getting ahead of themselves. Remember bond guys are usually the smartest in the room, so pay attention to interest rates. \n\nIn the next chart, we take a look at another important variable, the current account balance of Turkey. As you can see they have consistently ran a large current account defect, which means they are vulnerable to outside funding conditions. Large current account deficit countries are often the first and hardest hit when trade worries suffer and or dollar funding conditions tighten, both of which are occurring now. \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSRg13euommP3hWp1p1fMb5BUbheqjrfppomJQR4EGQ4L/image.png)\n\nThe last currency we are going to discuss today is the Russian Ruble. As we all know, Russia is not afraid to get involved politically in international affairs and financial markets often have a love/hate relationship with the grizzly bear. Any easy way to get a feel for what markets see as political risk can be to take a look at the 5 Year CDS on Russian bonds. \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdvN8FSMExNoxCNgnznHECGxowvf76CS6N5TBNvJLCWF8/image.png)\n\nIn the chart below we see the CDS in white vs the Ruble in Orange. In 2014-2015 with the Ukraine/Crimea sage, financial markets got very worries and thus pushed Russian CDS spreads up very high (along with falling oil prices) but since then, the CDS price has come down until just about a few months ago when it started creeping back up\n\n# Putting it all togeather\nThe skilled macro investor understands what variables to look at, but more importantly they understand what variables matters today. Machine learning models are very good at determining what variables effected outcomes in the past, but since markets are dynamic, the real skill is not figuring what worked before but understanding the narrative today in order to make decisions on what factors will influence tomorrow's prices.",

titleNatural Language Processing (NLP) – A beginner’s guide
bodyWhen we launched our project, [nvest](http://nvest.ai)we received a lot of positive feedback from traders surrounding the cool charts, technical indicators and some statics we posted to exemplify how traders and investors can use data in their decision-making process. However one area that I think has not go the deserved attention it should is text mining/ natural language processing (NLP). Sure everyone understands what a sentiment indicator is or has seen a word cloud but that hardly scratches the surface of what you can do with NLP. Today I am going to walk through an example of a recent word cloud we build on the OmiseGo whitepaper. ![insta_omg1.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPsXa3HFXSUhKNqrBeKaP1vdz9Q89EPZbagb6UwZBSPp8/insta_omg1.png) A simple word cloud takes the count of different words in a document and summarizes them visually by the number of counts. So if the word ‘car’ appears 20 times vs the word ‘muffler’ only 10 times, the visualization of the word ‘car’ would be proportionally bigger in the word cloud. The premise behind a word cloud is that you can get a quick and dirty overview of what topics are discussed in a document by looking at the counts or frequencies of words used. ## The problem with using simple word frequencies In the English language there are many rules regarding how different words are used. Verbs are conjugated for the tense (e.g buy, buying, bought) nouns are generally consistent may have possessive terms (Jake’s car) and there are many others. When you ask a computer to do a simple count of words it doesn’t know any of these rules and just looks for 100% matches. Buy and Buying are not the same. However researchers in NLP have been working on this issue for a while and today you have lots of software that can deal with most of these issues quite easily, in English at least. One popular option that we used is the [SpaCy](https://spacy.io/) package which categories word and can converts them into a ‘lemma’. In the above word cloud you will notice that we have a few terms or words connected with an underscore as well. That’s because some terms function like words for example ‘smart contract’ is really a noun and could be considered one word if the end goal is to count frequencies. ## Next Steps Counting words and putting them in a word cloud is easy but for more advanced analysis maybe you want to see the comparison of two documents. For example, the US Federal Reserve releases a [statement](https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomccalendars.htm) at each meeting and the financial markets pay close attention to each word. In this case its not so much the frequency of words, but what words have changed that is important. Or maybe you are looking on reddit and want to see how many time the world HODL is used in the past week vs the average for the past 2 years. These are just two of the many examples of tasks that NLP is good for. At nvest, our expert Machine Learning team is ready to build you a technology platform to provide you these types of tools, without having to program or know all the grammar rules. If that sounds like something you are interested in, join us at [www.nvest.ai](www.nvest.ai).

titleCrypto daily update - Explained
bodyI have been posting a few different charts on [twitter](https://twitter.com/nvest_dot_ai) with daily crypto updates but I realize not everyone totally understands the charts, so I wanted to go through them one by one to give you a quick understanding of what I look at. Forewarning, what I look at isn't necessarily the best way. Everyone will want to analyze the markets in their own way, depending on their own goals, experience, trading style etc. With that caveat, lets jump in. The first chart I posted is one of the biggest crypto moves (using a subset of only the top 300 coins) ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQJvwhCBATPNmWpKXAqH24VRPg764pJG3YhYCMzhDcCeu/image.png) In this image you get a quick feel for what coins have been moving over the past 24 hours and by how much. In addition you have the circle on each bar which is related to the market cap of the selected coin. The point of adding the market cap data point is that it allow you to see another data point easily. We can easily change the size of the circle to equal something else instead of market cap, like the number of days since all time highs (ATH) or percentage change in the past 6months. Its up to you. Once you find a coin that is moving, its time to jump in and take a closer look at that individual coin ![biggestMover24.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUsLukiMiHQzsXc3wS5uqzdHnxzwcBzBfoisEKft7W75f/biggestMover24.png) That is what the next chart is for. Because in crypto you have a lot of different coins that have big moves, but they are only pumps and they come back to earth pretty quick, so its good to take a view of the longer term picture. Once you have flipped through a few charts of the biggest moving coins, you might want to take a look at something else besides the price chart. For coins that have their own blockchain, I like to look at transactions volumes, if available and also social media changes. ![eth_transactions.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmR3gbyFm5SryHvrPSVLS1pFatFyPykLuKM2cRYpFzFWQa/eth_transactions.png) ![bat_reddit subs.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbdRHLSq99TJmq7Lo3a2yZqxDnfsJufw3QKdsj2Dwq141/bat_reddit%20subs.png) Stay tuned, we are working on bringing this other data to life really soon on nvest.ai
