bodyhttp://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/indo-flag.jpg # 1 - Indonesia has the friendliest people in Southeast Asia I have been to every single country in Southeast Asia only with the exception of Timor Leste and Brunei, and Indonesia has - hands down - the friendliest people. During my time in Indonesia, I met more kind and welcoming people than in any other country. I had the honor to live with local families for a couple of days in Jakarta, Gorontalo and in the Tana Toraja Highland. I was invited to two different weddings, one funeral, and countless family dinners all over the country. Almost everywhere I went, I was met by hospitable people who were genuinely interested in me and my story and who enjoyed talking to foreigners. # 2 - Indonesian food is amazing Having lived in Thailand for quite some time, I was never really a big fan of Thai food. Most people I talk to, say that Thai and Vietnamese food is by far the best food in Southeast Asia. Personally, I think that Indonesian food trumps them both thanks to its sheer variety that perfectly reflects the country's cultural diversity. Depending on the part of the country, you will find Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern and even Polynesian influences. Popular dishes include Nasi Goreng, Gado-Gado, Rendang, Tempeh, Siomay, Bakso and of course, all kinds of seafood. http://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/indo-food.jpg # 3 - The language is relatively easy to learn The local language is called Bahasa Indonesia and not only uses the Latin alphabet but also has a lot of similarities to the other languages, such as Dutch, German, Arabic or Tagalog. Being a native German speaker, it was surprisingly easy for me to learn Bahasa Indonesia, since almost every letter is pronounced in a similar way in German and some words (e.g. gratis, tante) are even completely the same. Add to that the easy grammar of most Asian languages, and you can probably become at least conversational in Indonesian in just a couple of months of studying the language. # 4 - Indonesia is the most diverse country in Southeast Asia This one is actually a no-brainer. Just pull up a world map and look at Indonesia and how widespread the country is. Every single major island has its own set of cultures, languages, cuisines, religions and topography. Despite having the largest Muslim population worldwide, there are five official religions in Indonesia - Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. If you wanted to explore every single part of Indonesia, it would probably take you at least a year. The point I am trying to make is, that Indonesia is a paradise for explorers and basically has everything you could wish for. The island of Java boasts some massive volcanoes (e.g. Gunung Bromo, Kawah Ijen), as well as two of the most impressive temples in all of Asia (Borobodur, Prambanan). The island of Bali needs no introduction. Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Sulawesi has some of the best dive spots in the world, as well as the Tana Toraja Highland, which is as unique as it gets. And then - of course - there are the countless pristine beaches and islands that can be found at almost every region in the country, with Raja Ampat being the most notorious paradise island. All these things make Indonesia not only the most diverse but also the most exciting country in Asia. http://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/bromo.jpg http://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/borobodur.jpg http://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/saronde.jpg # 5 - Indonesia is still not overrun by tourists Despite all the things I have mentioned so far, Indonesia still remains a relatively off-the-path destination. According to the ASEAN tourism statistics, Indonesia saw only about 10,000,000 visitors in 2015. Compare that to Thailand (3x as many tourists), Malaysia (2.5x as many tourists) or Singapore (1.5x as many tourists) and take into account the sheer size of the country, Indonesia definitely is one of the most overlooked countries in Southeast Asia. If you then travel outside of Bali, the number of tourists will drop even more, since Bali is THE tourist hotspot in Indonesia. "body": "http://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/indo-flag.jpg\n\n# 1 - Indonesia has the friendliest people in Southeast Asia\nI have been to every single country in Southeast Asia only with the exception of Timor Leste and Brunei, and Indonesia has - hands down - the friendliest people. During my time in Indonesia, I met more kind and welcoming people than in any other country. I had the honor to live with local families for a couple of days in Jakarta, Gorontalo and in the Tana Toraja Highland. I was invited to two different weddings, one funeral, and countless family dinners all over the country. Almost everywhere I went, I was met by hospitable people who were genuinely interested in me and my story and who enjoyed talking to foreigners.\n\n# 2 - Indonesian food is amazing\nHaving lived in Thailand for quite some time, I was never really a big fan of Thai food. Popular dishes include Nasi Goreng, Gado-Gado, Rendang, Tempeh, Siomay, Bakso and of course, all kinds of seafood.\n\nhttp://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/indo-food.jpg\n\n# 3 - The language is relatively easy to learn\nThe local language is called Bahasa Indonesia and not only uses the Latin alphabet but also has a lot of similarities to the other languages, such as Dutch, German, Arabic or Tagalog. Being a native German speaker, it was surprisingly easy for me to learn Bahasa Indonesia, since almost every letter is pronounced in a similar way in German and some words (e.g. gratis, tante) are even completely the same. Add to that the easy grammar of most Asian languages, and you can probably become at least conversational in Indonesian in just a couple of months of studying the language.\n\n# 4 - Indonesia is the most diverse country in Southeast Asia\nThis one is actually a no-brainer. All these things make Indonesia not only the most diverse but also the most exciting country in Asia.\n\nhttp://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/bromo.jpg\n\nhttp://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/borobodur.jpg\n\nhttp://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/saronde.jpg\n\n# 5 - Indonesia is still not overrun by tourists\nDespite all the things I have mentioned so far, Indonesia still remains a relatively off-the-path destination. If you travel to places like Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan or the islands East of Lombok, you will most likely not see many other tourists.\n\nhttp://www.urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/indo-tourists.JPG",

bodyIt was at the very end of my six-month-trip through Southeast Asia three years ago when I found one of the most amazing places in the whole region. An island that is so special that I haven't found any other place like it ever since. As the title of this post already tells, I am talking about Siargao Island. It is still a hidden gem in the Philippines and hopefully will still be after publishing this article. Please note: all the information is based on my last visit 3 years ago. Some things might have changed in the meantime but most information will still be accurate. # Where is Siargao and how do I get there? Siargao (pronounced Shargao) belongs to the province of Surigao del Norte. The easiest way to find it on the map is to look for a city called Surigao which is located about 800km southeast of Manila. But take a look yourself: ![Siargao map](http://urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/siargaomap.JPG) The most comfortable way to get to Siargao is to take a flight from Cebu City. There is only one flight per day operated by Cebu Pacific Air leaving Cebu at noon. The same airplane then returns to Cebu City. Just check http://cebupacificair.com/ to search for flights. Because of the very unstable weather conditions it is quite common that flights get cancelled. You should always keep that in mind and book your return flight 2-3 days earlier than your schedule requires you to. The airport is called Sayak Airport and is located on the western part of the island. The majority of tourists are staying in the lively beachtown General Luna which is located on the eastern part of the island. Upon arriving at the airport you can either take one of the many mini-vans that are operated by hotels and resorts to get to General Luna or a motorbike (called Habal Habal). Both should be 300 Pesos (6.5$) per person. I recommend to take the minivan as the Habal Habal can get very uncomfortable if you have a lot of luggage. The other option is to take a ferry from Surigao City to Siargao. In this case you will arrive at the city of Dapa which is the biggest city on the island and one of only a few places that has ATMs. From there you can take a tricycle or a motorbike to General Luna for 200-250 Pesos (4-5$). As already mentioned, the whole island lacks ATMs so you should bring enough cash with you if you don't want to drive to Dapa every second day. # When is the best time to go to Siargao? It depends. If you are an experienced surfer, you want to go between August and November. This is typhoon season and Siargao will pick up swell from that while getting off-shore winds. If you are a newbie, you can also go between December and April. This is when you will find strong, consistent short period swell and on-shore wind. If you're not experienced you won't know the difference. But if you're experienced you'll be disappointed by the wind conditions. If you don't care about surfing at all, you should go between March and August to avoid rainy days as much as it is possible in a tropical country like the Philippines. Keep in mind that the weather on Siargao can never be predicted accurately. Rainy days during dry season are just as possible as perfect sunshine weather during rainy season. In the end it is always a bit of a gamble. # Why go to Siargao? Life is chill on Siargao.  A typical day on Siargao looks like this: * wake up (early) and do some surfing * have delicious breakfast and lunch in one of the many cheap restaurants in General Luna (where they manage to actually make Filipino food tasty) * relax a few hours in a hammock reading a book or even better Steemit * surf again in the afternoon * have some amazing seafood for dinner * chill out in a bar. If you want less chilling and more adventure, do one of the many tours and explore the island's incredible nature (more on that below). # What makes Siargao so special? Siargao is as green as it gets. Where other island's have gigantic resorts, Siargao still has palm trees and untouched beaches everywhere. It is truly one of the most beautiful places in the Philippines. And the best thing is: the majority of tourists are surfers so you will barely see any other white faces on your exploration trip. Against first assumptions, Siargao is not just for experienced surfers but also good for beginners. Just ask the locals where the beginner spots are. One surf lesson is around 700 Pesos (15$) including the board. I would recommend getting one lesson and then just rent your board and learn it on your own together with the new friends you hopefully have already made. If you consider all the other factors like food, lifestyle, prices, things you can do and the people there, I would say Siargao is the best place in Asia to learn surfing. But most of all you will meet very cool people in Siargao and in the end it is always the people you are with who make a trip unforgettable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IXb4X3rBOM # Things to do on Siargao Life is exciting on Siargao. The island is known as the surfing-capital of the Philippines. Some of the best surfers of the world come here to surf the waves of the infamous Cloud 9. Nevertheless, you don't need to be a surfer to enjoy Siargao. There are plenty of other things to do. You can easily spend a full week in General Luna without getting bored and if you enjoy surfing, you better stay for two weeks. ## Go Island Hopping The most popular thing to do is the island hopping trip where you visit the neighbouring islands of Guyam, Daku (good for surfing and sunbathing) and Naked Island, which is actually just a sand bank. You can either rent your own boat near the market of General Luna or organise the whole trip via your resort or hostel. When I did the island hopping tour the last time, it lasted for the whole afternoon. We bought a gigantic fish and some crabs as well as beers and drinks at the market and had the fish grilled by the locals on Daku island. ![Siargao map](http://urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/daku.jpg) ## Chill at the Magpupungko Pool One of my favorite places on Siargao is the Magpupungko rock pool. It is a natural pool that is seperated from the ocean by a large reef. During low tide you can walk and sit on the reef or swim in the crytal clear water inside the pool. The one hour motorbike ride to the Magpupungko pool leads you through a stunning scenery with palm trees everywhere you look. The pool is located near the city of Pilar and the entrance fee is only 50 Pesos (1$). ![Siargao map](http://urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/magpupungko.jpg) ## Do a daytrip to the incredible Sugba Lagoon The daytrip to the Sugba Lagoon was the personal highlight of my time in Siargao. The lagoon can be reached by boat from the port of Del Carmen. The boat ride through the huge mangroves is already an amazing experience. If you book the tour at the Paglaom Hostel (see below) the boat will take you to a small cottage in the middle of the lagoon which you will most likely have all for yourself. The Hostel also organises a huge barbecue (chicken, fish, seafood) at the cottage with all you can eat and drink (beer + rum + soft drinks) as well as snorkeling gear and stand-up paddle boards that you can use. The whole trip was 800 Pesos each (17$) for 10 people including the boat-rental, food, drinks and the paddle boards. It might be possible though that they increased the price in the last 2 years. ![Siargao map](http://urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/siargao-island.jpg) ![Siargao map](http://urlaubinbangkok.de/steemit/sugba.jpg) ## Do the drunken carabao ride One of the activities that I regret not having done. You basically ride up a mountain on a water buffalo – completely wasted because all drinks are included in the price. You might get hurt and you will definitely get your clothes dirty but it's a fun thing to do. ## Enjoy fresh seafood for dirt-cheap prices Where should I start? The local market in General Luna has some of the best seafood I have ever had in my life. You can buy fresh fish, squids, crabs and prawns for very cheap prices. It is a paradise for seafood lovers. The fruits and pastries are also very delicious. ## Rent a motorbike and explore the island If you are planning to do some surfing, you'll need a bike anyway. But even if you don't surf you should rent a bike for at least a day (should be between 350 and 400 Pesos) and explore the island. Siargao is not small and there are plenty of places to visit. The island has stunning landscapes and I would say 95% of the island is completely untouched from tourism. Just driving around without any plan is really fun in Siargao. You just can't stop gazing at the natural beauty of the island. ## Explore Sohoton Cove This is the #1 attraction to do in Siargao according to tripadvisor. I haven't done it yet but it is on my list for the next visit. I recommend to read the reviews on tripadvisor to get a good idea about this place. # How expensive is Siargao? Life is cheap on Siargao. You can get great food in one of the many restaurants for less than 200 Pesos (4$) and rent a motorbike and a surfboard for 350 Pesos (7.5$) each a day. Accomodation is also cheap and available in all price ranges. I stayed at the only hostel on the island (6-7$ per night, see below) and what we used to do was buying the biggest fish at the local market (around 7kg for 18$ – good for more than a dozen people) or other seafood (crabs, squid, etc.), give it to the girls in the kitchen next door to prepare it, put the fish on the grill, cook some side dishes and then have an amazing barbecue dinner with some fruits as dessert for less than 2$ each. The biggest expenses are definitely the flight tickets. Once you actually made it Siargao you can easily live for less than 30$ a day or less than 20$ a day if you don't rent a surfboard or motorbike and if you are staying at the hostel. # What accomodation is the best? There are numerous resorts on Siargo, most of which are located in General Luna. Just check sites like Agoda, Tripadvisor and Booking.com if you want to stay in one of the better resorts. However, I recommend staying at one of the following places: ## Paglaom Hostel I have already mentioned it a couple of times. Everytime I am in General Luna I am staying at the Paglaom Hostel. It is without a doubt the best hostel I have ever stayed at and I can highly recommend it to everyone. The owner is a swedish girl who sold all her belongings and moved to Siargao where she opened the hostel with her Filipino boyfriend. The best thing about the hostel are the other people that you will meet. Without a single exception, everyone I met in this hostel was chill and had his shit together. After only 2 days you will feel like you have found a new family. In general, Siargao attracts very decent people with sometimes impressive life stories. A bed in the dorm room, which is actually just a hut with a roof, is 7$. This makes Paglaom Hostel not only the best but also the cheapest accomodation on the whole island. Another big advantage are the tours they offer. They are all perfectly organised and a lot of fun. Website: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Paglaom-Hostel/Siargao-Island/80710 ## Jing's Place If you don't want to sleep in a dorm room and feel the need for some privacy, I recommend Jing's place which is located directly next to Paglaom hostel. Again, the owners become like family really soon. You can buy fresh food at the market, give it to the kitchen girls at Jing's place and they will make a feast out of it. Jing's place is named after Jing, one of the best surfers on Siargao. He also gives lessons and I highly recommend to take a lesson with him if you want to learn how to surf. Jing's Place and Paglaom Hostel next door are basically one big place where all people - locals and travelers - know and hang out with each other. Website: http://www.jingsplace.com/#/home ## Kermit Surf Resort Kermit is a more upscale version of Jing's place. It is a small surf resort with nice bungalows and a good restaurant that has happy hours everyday where you can get cheap rum and cokes. They also offer all kinds of tours and surf packages. Just browse their website for more information. It is probably the best option if you are going to Siargao with your girlfriend or a couple of buddies since it is not as easy to socialize and find new friends there as it is at the other two places mentioned above. Website: http://www.kermitsiargao.com/ # Nightlife on Siargao Nightlife is ... shit on Siargao. To be honest, there is not much going on at night since most travelers want to wake up early to surf. There are a couple of smaller bars on the main road called Tourism Road (creative name, eh?) but they are always closing down and changing owners from time to time. When I was on Siargao the last time, a bar called Nine Bar was the biggest thing. Unfortunately, it seems as if they have closed down as well. The only thing worth mentioning is the following place, since it is almost always packed: ## Tattoo Jungle Bar The biggest party on the whole island, open every Tuesday and Friday and located close to Paglaom Hostel, Jing's Place and Kermit. Sounds amazing, right? Well, actually it is just a very small open air party with 50-100 people but it is the only thing that comes close to a dance club.Don't bother dressing up - most people are wearing shorts, tank-tops and flip-flops. They serve the legendary jungle juice - a strange mixture of mango juice and cheap rum that doesn't taste like alcohol but can get you hammered really fast. # Summary To sum it up, Siargao is a paradise not only for surfers but for everyone who wants to escape the tourist herd in the Philippines. There are plenty of cool things to do during the day but not so much going on at night. Life is cheap, chill and exciting on Siargao. Surfing and having a great time with cool people in a place that is not as overrun as the rest of Southeast Asia – that’s why one should visit Siargao.

Jing's Place and Paglaom Hostel next door are basically one big place where all people - locals and travelers - know and hang out with each other.\n\nWebsite: http://www.jingsplace.com/#/home\n\n## Kermit Surf Resort\nKermit is a more upscale version of Jing's place. It is a small surf resort with nice bungalows and a good restaurant that has happy hours everyday where you can get cheap rum and cokes. They also offer all kinds of tours and surf packages. Just browse their website for more information. It is probably the best option if you are going to Siargao with your girlfriend or a couple of buddies since it is not as easy to socialize and find new friends there as it is at the other two places mentioned above.\n\nWebsite: http://www.kermitsiargao.com/\n\n# Nightlife on Siargao\nNightlife is ... shit on Siargao.\n\nTo be honest, there is not much going on at night since most travelers want to wake up early to surf. There are a couple of smaller bars on the main road called Tourism Road (creative name, eh?) but they are always closing down and changing owners from time to time. When I was on Siargao the last time, a bar called Nine Bar was the biggest thing. Unfortunately, it seems as if they have closed down as well. The only thing worth mentioning is the following place, since it is almost always packed:\n\n## Tattoo Jungle Bar\nThe biggest party on the whole island, open every Tuesday and Friday and located close to Paglaom Hostel, Jing's Place and Kermit. \n\n# Summary\nTo sum it up, Siargao is a paradise not only for surfers but for everyone who wants to escape the tourist herd in the Philippines. There are plenty of cool things to do during the day but not so much going on at night. Life is cheap, chill and exciting on Siargao. Surfing and having a great time with cool people in a place that is not as overrun as the rest of Southeast Asia – that’s why one should visit Siargao.",
