Great place to surf, except in Summer when it pretty much goes flat.  Winter is when it’s really on but you’ll need a thick wetsuit and a big wave board to handle the Southern Ocean swells.  \n\nThe ocean has taught me many life lessons.  Like how to handle fear.  Not eliminate it but keep it from blossoming to panic which is a bad state to be in.  I’ve written my first SteamIt article on this subject.  Hope you like it.\n\nMy best friend died on his first overseas surf trip.  Wow, that was such a shock for me.  I was only in my early 20’s and didn’t know how to deal with all that grief and anger.  The ocean taught me lessons here too.  This might be my next SteamIt article.  \n\nI’m loving reading other people’s stories and connecting.  I don’t have all the answers but I’m trying to learn from you beautiful people on my journey through this great adventure we’ve labelled ‘life’.\n\nCheers\n\nGlen",

It's pretty touristy now.\nI remember seeing David Nuuhiwa ride the nose on a 3' wave for what seemed to be forever.\nIt was a Small Wave Contest and that year the waves were REALLY small. I saw Kelly Slater charge some XXL waves earlier this year at Margaret River and the guy just seems fearless.  You are right though that it is the 'panic' that will take you out.  Fear can keep you sharp but don't let it grow into panic.  That's when a situation can turn bad.",

      "body": "Wow!\nLearning to surf in Florida never opened a door for big waves to me. Probably that's for the best.  There was one day when a hurricane was offshore making larger than usual waves.  I had just ridden one inside and was paddling back out when that super set decided to come in. It didn't show until I was already committed to getting outside.  I'd like to say I caught the wave like you did but instead it caught me.  I was tired from the previous ride and simply couldn't paddle fast enough to beat or catch this wave. It was close enough that I tried, got to the crest just in time to be rolled up. Of course the board was ripped from my grip (no straps in those days) and I kissed the bottom (we have a sandy break, no rock much in Florida) for way too long. I body surfed in until I got to the rip current.  I didn't try to fight it so I ended up on shore about a half mile from where I started tired but alive. \nSo I rested a bit and went back out! Of course.\nWe learn a lot of lesson on a board (and some after we've fallen off). Thank you for sharing yours with us.\nAnd take good care of the dog.  They're always willing to listen and I'm convinced understand far more than we think.",
