![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdUrLpWew7afZoZwZnu2GsVhJm2wgLK5Mvxp7DsWUcYES/image.png) Ultimately, the credit for that flexibility goes to our digestive system. The complex human gut can process the milk and meat of other animals, cooked and raw combinations of foods, and a wide variety of plants — be them fermented, roasted, dried, salted or something else. The system that manages the physical and chemical breakdown of foods, the extraction of nutrients from them, and the efficient ejection of waste is so complex that it turns out it even has its own brain. And as Giulia Enders, a German writer and scientist, explains in her TEDTalk above, there's a lot more to know. But we are making progress on that front. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZaudoKaHEPi1uNBp2NZppC9i5BjXyB7DHqfj1Cxd6xaW/image.png) The Enteric Nervous System (ENS) is a collection of over 500 million neurons — the most found outside the big, main brain that lives in your skull. It probably evolved before our other main brain did; it's ancient hardware. Where is the ENS? Well, it's in every part of your gut, lining your esophagus, down into your stomach, throughout your intestines large and small, and all the way to the (ahem), end. Instead of a singular lump of an organ, it's more like a mesh that's integrated into the whole system. The ENS has all sorts of neurotransmitters zipping around, sending chemical signals from one part of the gut to another. (In fact, the same neurotransmitters as are found in the brains in our skulls.) It's not conscious like our main brain is, but without it, we couldn't survive. However, the ENS will still function even if we are otherwise brain dead or damaged. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdALGSpEb65SYhvqFCZqjwvoAMiyZnDvZjmSaQvQXnfU7/image.png) Scientists have known about the ENS, but didn't really know how it worked until recently. According to a new study published in JNeurosci, they've figured it out. Using mice, the scientists were able to observe a "novel pattern of rhythmic coordinated neuronal firing" — basically the neurons in the ENS coordinated with each other to move muscles around the large intestine that in turn physically moved pellets through the mice guts. Without the mouse having to think "I want to digest this," the pellets were digested. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbEpdc7G7qzLyccbxcbXcMdM1V6HyybgSGnff9SvqfewA/image.png) Yes, our bodies have plenty of automatic functions, but this is different. The gut isn't governed by the central nervous system (CNS), though it does communicate with it via the vagus nerve. The ENS operates independently. It can exchange information with the the CNS, but it doesn't need it to digest food. This is part of the reason we don't have to eat at the same time each day, or continuously. The system is always "on," but it isn't actively working until we eat. This "smart system" in our gut allows digestive movement to occur only when it's needed — and now we know how that happens. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmc5mRCpQD5oiazHvzXQjkgt9NKqJdk4q3udzNRseTMBF5/image.png) Interestingly, the scientists also observed that in between digestions, there was still "ongoing activity" in the ENS. What was it doing? We have no idea. There's obviously plenty more to learn about the ENS, but knowing that it causes digestion in the way it does advances our understanding of both digestion and the capacities of this second "brain." Holistic health advocates have long suggested a brain-gut connection. We already know that 90 percent of the serotonin our body makes (often called the "happy chemical") is produced in special cells in the GI tract. Half of the dopamine we make is located there, too. Both serotonin and dopamine have a physiological function and also influence mood when they make their way out of the gut and into the blood stream. Connecting the dots between the known function of those neurotransmitters, it's possible the ENS could act in a more direct way to influence our emotions and state of mind, though this has yet to be understood fully by scientists. All of this is not only food for thought, it reminds us that "going with your gut" when it comes to decisions might not be such a brainless way to make choices after all.

快来看一下我们神奇的消化系统究竟是如何工作的吧!\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdUrLpWew7afZoZwZnu2GsVhJm2wgLK5Mvxp7DsWUcYES/image.png)\nUltimately, the credit for that flexibility goes to our digestive system. But we are making progress on that front.\n\n\n从根本上来说,我们之所以能灵活地选择食物要归功于我们的消化系统。 \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZaudoKaHEPi1uNBp2NZppC9i5BjXyB7DHqfj1Cxd6xaW/image.png)\n\n\nThe Enteric Nervous System (ENS) is a collection of over 500 million neurons — the most found outside the big, main brain that lives in your skull. It probably evolved before our other main brain did; it's ancient hardware. \n\n\nWhere is the ENS? Well, it's in every part of your gut, lining your esophagus, down into your stomach, throughout your intestines large and small, and all the way to the (ahem), end. Instead of a singular lump of an organ, it's more like a mesh that's integrated into the whole system. The ENS has all sorts of neurotransmitters zipping around, sending chemical signals from one part of the gut to another. (In fact, the same neurotransmitters as are found in the brains in our skulls.) It's not conscious like our main brain is, but without it, we couldn't survive. However, the ENS will still function even if we are otherwise brain dead or damaged.\n\n\nENS在哪儿? \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdALGSpEb65SYhvqFCZqjwvoAMiyZnDvZjmSaQvQXnfU7/image.png)\n\n\nScientists have known about the ENS, but didn't really know how it worked until recently. According to a new study published in JNeurosci, they've figured it out. Using mice, the scientists were able to observe a \"novel pattern of rhythmic coordinated neuronal firing\" — basically the neurons in the ENS coordinated with each other to move muscles around the large intestine that in turn physically moved pellets through the mice guts. Without the mouse having to think \"I want to digest this,\" the pellets were digested.\n\n\n科学家已经知道ENS,但直到最近才真正知道它是如何工作的。 \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbEpdc7G7qzLyccbxcbXcMdM1V6HyybgSGnff9SvqfewA/image.png)\n\nYes, our bodies have plenty of automatic functions, but this is different. The gut isn't governed by the central nervous system (CNS), though it does communicate with it via the vagus nerve. The ENS operates independently. It can exchange information with the the CNS, but it doesn't need it to digest food. This is part of the reason we don't have to eat at the same time each day, or continuously. The system is always \"on,\" but it isn't actively working until we eat. This \"smart system\" in our gut allows digestive movement to occur only when it's needed — and now we know how that happens.\n\n\n是的,我们的身体有很多自动功能,但这是不同的。 \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmc5mRCpQD5oiazHvzXQjkgt9NKqJdk4q3udzNRseTMBF5/image.png)\n\nInterestingly, the scientists also observed that in between digestions, there was still \"ongoing activity\" in the ENS. What was it doing? We have no idea. There's obviously plenty more to learn about the ENS, but knowing that it causes digestion in the way it does advances our understanding of both digestion and the capacities of this second \"brain.\"\n\n\n有趣的是,科学家们还观察到,在两次消化之间,ENS仍然存在“正在进行的活动”。 \n\n\nHolistic health advocates have long suggested a brain-gut connection. We already know that 90 percent of the serotonin our body makes (often called the \"happy chemical\") is produced in special cells in the GI tract. Half of the dopamine we make is located there, too. Both serotonin and dopamine have a physiological function and also influence mood when they make their way out of the gut and into the blood stream. Connecting the dots between the known function of those neurotransmitters, it's possible the ENS could act in a more direct way to influence our emotions and state of mind, though this has yet to be understood fully by scientists.\n\n\n全面健康倡导者长期以来一直认为大脑与肠道是相联系的。 \n\n\nAll of this is not only food for thought, it reminds us that \"going with your gut\" when it comes to decisions might not be such a brainless way to make choices after all.\n\n\n所有的这些不仅发人深思,它还提醒我们,在做决策时“跟随你的直觉”(gut既有‘肠道’的意思,也有‘直觉’的意思)可能并非毫无头脑。",

1. 埃姆斯 室 艾姆斯房间![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSKWhCZJqUMPabbVSkbQMV95SGTMAYFGQJQjpfPmnxC5q/image.png) The Ames Room is one of the best (and most famous) examples of how perception is not always the same as the reality of what's in front of them. When viewed from the front, an Ames Room appears to be a normal, square room with walls perpendicular to floor and ceiling. However, the back wall is in fact built at a sharp angle and the floor and ceiling are steeply slanted. This creates an illusion that makes people and objects on one side of the room seem much smaller or larger than people or objects on the other side of the room. Since perspective is important, many Ames Room models have some sort of pinhole viewing device so that the viewer sees the room from an angle where they cannot perceive the slanted floor and the different lengths of the walls. The idea behind the Ames Room has been used in movies such as "The Lord of the Rings" series to make some actors seem much shorter or taller than they really are. 2. Simultaneous Contrast Illusion 同时对比错觉![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUCJmZqXs9MB9vfZDPy7CWBf9wVEUQu6VsbNyqB8yr73D/image.png) In this image, the horizontal bar in the middle of the picture is one solid color. However, the changing gradient behind the bar makes it seem like the color of the bar itself is changing as it goes from left to right. If the viewer uses their hands to block the background, it becomes obvious that the whole bar is indeed only one shade of gray. This trick shows that people tend to make assumptions based on surroundings rather than looking only at a singular object. This may seem like a flaw in humans' abilities of perception (the inability to look at an object without being influenced by the background), but it could also be seen as a positive trait (being able to look at the "big picture"). 3. Penrose Stairs 彭罗斯楼梯 ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeahh3kTZHsRkzVZHwCUdwjeQsQsk67xJ3a4tKhRQLTk5/image.png) The Penrose Stairs, also known as the Impossible Staircase, is perhaps one of the most famous of all optical illusions. In this two dimensional image, the four flights of stairs appear to link together so that a climber would go up or down the steps in a continuous loop but never arrive at a higher or lower point. Though it can only exist in two dimensions, the Penrose Stairs have become a popular subject for artists, who depict the stairs and other similar distorted perspectives in two dimensional paintings or drawings. In fact, this is just one example of the kind of perspective tricks that artists working with two-dimensional mediums have employed for centuries. 4. Ponzo Illusion 蓬佐幻觉 ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWbVHfF8KLZxLERNQR5a9qBjmqBd874vh5eEqP82Qxdx7/image.png) The Ponzo Illusion relies on geometric shapes to trick the eye. The idea is similar to the Simultaneous Contrast Illusion: People will make assumptions about an object based on the information that they get from the background. The illusion is very easy to recreate. When he first came up with it, Italian psychologist Mario Ponzo drew two horizontal parallel lines that were exactly the same length. By then drawing vertical lines that gradually got closer together (not unlike a picture of a railroad going off into the horizon), Ponzo was able to trick viewers into thinking that the parallel line in the background was much longer than the one in the foreground. 5. The Rabbit Duck Head 兔鸭头 ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmd51ZQmW3w1JMrKvzJ3TSaJEwY6qKG33u6em6dByNUTPg/image.png) One of the earliest examples of an ambiguous illustration, the Rabbit-Duck Head Illusion was first published in Germany in the late 19th century. Such hidden images were quite popular at the time. In this particular example, the duck's beak becomes the rabbit's ears and the eye is drawn in such a way that it fits for both the right-facing and left-facing animals. The image was used by early 20th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who studied the idea of perception and wrote academic papers that discussed the ways in which people perceive things.

#1 Show the Left Side Most people know their “good side,” but according to fashion photographer Garance Doré and a scientific study, usually the left side of the face is more attractive. #2Don't Get Too Close Never stand the closest to the camera, or you'll look disproportionately larger. Instead, position yourself on an even plane with the other people in the photo. #3low-Angle shot According to fashion blogger Chriselle Lim, a lower angle visually stretches your figure, making you look taller and leaner. #4Not Straight-On Turning your head slightly is more flattering than facing the camera straight-on because it will give your features more depth. Hello, cheekbones! 你好~颧骨~ #5High-Angle Shot When seated, ask the photographer to take the picture from above, and tilt your face up to meet the camera, which will help define your jaw. According to Garance Doré, "a shot from above is a godsend!" #6Crop It If you're the one posting the photo, crop it so your entire body fills the frame. This will create the illusion of vertical length. #7Say 'Money~' The hard "e"sound at the end of "money" makes the corners of your mouth go up andmakes your eyes crinkle, creating theaffectation of a genuine smile. #8Look Slimmer by Changing Your Angle Angle your body 45 degrees away from the camera, push your weight on to your back foot, tuck your "away arm"behind your back, and remember the golden rule: If it bends, bend it . #9Close Your Eyes First Ask the photographer to count to three before taking the picture. Close your eyes and breathe in. Then, just before the shutter clicks, breathe out, open your eyes and smile. Your face will look relaxed and your smile will be real. #10Stay Away from the Thin One Never pose beside a thin person. Especially if you're wearing the same dress.
