| body | Just providing this quick post for people looking for the answers. How to withdraw money from BTC or other crypto-currencies back into fiat currency. Its unfortunate but sometimes necessary. Revolut again provides an essential bridge with the ability to send and recieve from a EUR SEPAaccount to and from Coinbase. The steps are: 1) Sell back BTC into EUR from within coinbase or GDAX so your EUR wallet contains the sum you wish to withdraw. 2) From within Revolut, find your EUR account. Click on top left account icon. It will show your active accounts/ 3) In Revolut: Go to EUR, write down IBAN and BIC. 4) In Coinbase go to 'withdraw' 5) Use details from Revolut. In a few days you will recieve. 6) You can then convert instantly to GBP and withdraw to standard bank account or via Revolut card from ATM. Hope this is helpful. |

| body | Buying with Coinbase is convenient but will eat a 4% of your money straight off the bat. And it does not support a deposit straight from GBP from bank account option. Now compare to buying on Gdax (the Coinbase exchange) if one can preload Gdax with *euro* via a SEPA deposit ('single european payment area' integrated solution) = 0% But how to do this? How to have a means to transform from GBP bank account to EURO and send EURO from a provisional Euro IBAN (international bank account number) The mobile phone app Revolut means one can do this. Revolut, is free as an app, with no subscription charge. Its free to load Revolut with pound sterling. Loading the Revolut account with GDP from my card was instant. Its 'free' to exchange from GDP to EUR (I checked the standard exchange rate- it tallies completely). This was also instant. With the recent Revolut upgrade one can do a fee-less SEPA transfer straight into Coinbase or GDAX in Euro. My test : I transferred 35 GDP into 39.89 EUR instantly within Revolut then used a SEPA transfer from within Revolut into Coinbase. Revolut allows you to store the bank details of Coinbase or any other account for easy future transaction. Coinbase/GDAX recieved my euros' into my euro wallet within 12 hours and took no fee. As long as I use a LIMIT order on Gdax my purchase of BTC/ETH/LTC was without any fee. So theres a time factor. It it does not allow making a sudden swoop upon any flash crashes or market volatility, but it means for someone like me intending to add to their balance of BTC or ETH once a month or so, that the EUR is already sitting on Coinbase/GDAX ready to turn to BTC/ETH/LTC for such a volatility event (or just a relative dip, or just to convert and send to BITTREX), without the buyers fee. Hope this is useful. |

Hope this is useful. |

| body | Continuing to explore the crypto world. People are in a struggle to understand 'what is it?'. The issue being, its not one thing. Its a range of things. People ask, is it a hysteria? A currency? A commodity? Certainly crypto serves as currency, one perhaps in its infancy, but in some ways an inevitable consequence of the global network revolution. Some crypto serves as an accessible form of investment speculation, where people arbitrage on market volatility. Some crypto serves as shares or crowdfunding for new companies. Some of these companies are running useful services that function via crypto blockchains themselves. For me it is all of these things, a new and perhaps still clumsily-developing global currency system. Some people like it for the reason they may preserve some anonymity or autonomy from nation state fiat ursury based systems which have not served them well and have strangled them in systems of debt and inflation. Some people are 'in it' because they see it being pumped up by speculation, hype, but also valid news as to its potential world-changing utility. The current parabolic curve (and slight market correction of the past week) are signs of both an adoption curve and of the growth of the environment of companies adopting it, as well as hype. China's move to ban ICO's, halt bank accounts of such companies, refund money, and basically stifle and interfere in a typical 'big brother' statist kind of way in this field of lively entreprenural activity is predictable since the initial coin offering market (ICO) IS dangerous for naive people. A lot of snake oil. And there will predictably be more tightening of access to the system of ICO's, the realm of 'professional investment' will try to sandbox this approach of crowdfunding/share offering from the uninformed and sometimes vunerable 'lower castes'. I agree there needs to be oversight of ICO's so that they are not just ripping people off, but actually the community of researchers and enthusiasts have been doing a fair job of that for people interested in crypto's - the internet offers plenty of research and information for people to perform due dilligence about ICO's. But what China's move represents primarily is the threat to the status quo this disruptive technology is presenting. Which is a good reason to be interested in it. The internet disrupted business as usual for media conglomerates, television and newspaper. It disrupted the way entertainment, music and art was distributed and traded. It has changed most of all the way we communicate daily and at distance. It has created unprecedented oportunities for people to self-organise in new ways. I see crypto as simply a new manifestation of this wave of transformation. It is embryonic, clumsy, sometimes unsafe, but I support its evolution for the potential empowerment it may impart - not just for 1st worlders, but for the second and third world, the great unbanked, and for those who have been branded by 'the system' of debtors and credit scores as unconventional, who's prospects they have accordingly limited. This presents oportunity for breakout, for the potentals of a universal basic income, and for more evolved ways of democratic systems to evolve. |

| body | * Cryptocurrency is somehow strangely a lot of fun. * It is refreshing to handle ones own currency without dependence upon centralised authorities. * The bar for participation is low and anyone willing to learn can open a 'wallet' meaning it is hugely accessible to the 'unbanked' or those with shitty credit scores due to low social conformity or outstanding student loans. * Transaction time with BTC and Etherium is slow. Litecoin seems extremely fast in comparison. * The interface and complexity is still beyond many people * The long chains of numbers and HEX codes for private and public keys are hard for dyslexics and those with dyscalculia * The irreversibility of transactions that go amiss due to incorrectly inputted addresses makes it currently very vulnerable to human error * The proof of work model to generate 'value' of bitcoins seems to be a big waste of energy. Turning electricity into abstract commodity seems entropic. * Current interest is turning it into a speculators playpen with good project buried and meaningless coins buoyed by instinctual fomo waves on the exchanges. * Many consider exchanging nation-state currency for cryptocurrency a kind of 'betting' rather than engagement with an emerging system. * The important thing will be accessibility and usability of interface and broadening means for crypto to pay for real world services - which can work the more people 'migrate' to that system and use it as 'real money' rather than a kind of novel money-making investment. * It is much easier to exchange pounds for cryptos, but harder to exchange cryptos for pounds, but new services and startups are trying to address that. * Estimated 0.04% worlds population have adopted so far, meaning the concerns about having 'missed the boat' are erroneous ... and looking at it in terms of investment commodity rather than a new paradigm of exchange to learn, support and engage with. ~ To the moon,my friends,to the moon. |

| body | So here I will share some thoughts around ‘archival’ or ‘durable’ techniques and why it is so important to the painter. Some of the best preserved works are from the Dutch painters and the Germans such as Durer, who apparently offered guarantees (for a pretty penny) that his work would last 500 years or more. There is some display of confidence there, perhaps granted by access to empirical knowledge held within the guild systems of the time about what worked and what didn’t. When ‘modern science’ came along, we managed to forget a whole lot of these empirically derived forms of knowledge. The painter embraced cotton canvas, embraced chemically bleached and boiled linseed oil (rather than sun oil), embraced acrylic gesso, embraced alkyd resins. All apparently to save some crucial time and convenience. One of the arguments I hear, is ‘it is SO egotistical to be bothered about whether your work will last past your lifetime, who do you think you are, Michelangelo?’. My argument is contrary : ‘it is SO egotistical to not be bothered about whether your work will last past your lifetime, because people buy your work, invest in you and what you make, and if it disintegrates upon their walls because you couldn’t be bothered to humble yourself to traditional knowledge then you harvest the fruits of modern arrogance’. Ok, I’m putting it a bit strong. But look at what happened to a master painter like Odd Nerdrum and the pickle he got embroiled in due to a passing phase of experimenting with paint medium. His collectors demanded money back, he hid cash in a safe for refunds, got found out by the tax man and went to jail. Its like something from Vasari’s ‘Lives of the Most Eminent Painters Sculptors and Architects’. It’s worth bearing in mind that painters pour hours of energy, focus and skill into their works, which they render upon some of the most flimsy substances – fabric! I do not argue against painting on fabric, it is a particular joy, but it is obviously not the most enduring or strong substance! I like linen, it is a tough fabric. I also suspect it is more resistant to the oxidative stress of linseed oil (canvas ‘rot’). But up until a few years ago I painted on pre-stretched cotton from art shops, which came primed in acrylic. This means all my work previous to 2012 is oil on-top of acrylic paint, which I am still not sure is a great idea. Although on the first layer I suspect the oil gets enough ‘mechanical tooth’ into the canvas that it may not cause future problems. Yet, who can say they really know how things will be in 50 years time? This is why I switched to linen and wood and size the surface then and prime my surface with oil. I now only using traditional gesso on wood.. I would say to the painter beware of cheap canvas. It may not even be the canvas which causes the problem, it may be the fragility of weak gesso. Its important to recognise that acrylic gesso is not real traditional gesso – there’s no chalk or rabbit-skin glue in it for starts. But traditional gesso is too fragile for canvas and would be equally vulnerable to cracking. One of the reasons painters moved from wood to canvas is so they could paint bigger and so they could roll their work for transportation. These are all still important reasons for the modern artist to paint on canvas. But a weak gesso (whether genuine or acrylic based) may crack on rolling. It may even crack when you are painting on it, sometimes pressure is enough to cause a weak gesso to form cracks. When this problem occurs, the paint, the oil will ‘bleed through’ the crack into the back of the canvas, potentially causing canvas rot, and also creating perturbations in the smoothness of the painting via the formation of ridges along the crack-lines. This only has happened to me once but its obviously big trouble. I bought a canvas in a market from a man stretching and gessoing canvas himself and making a bit of money by doing so. I bought a canvas and worked on it quite lean in the under-painting with primarily just gum turpentine then moving more into oil medium. No problem until 4 or 5 glaze layers later, I started noticing some bleed through the back of the canvas. Other areas started to present – it wasn’t a paint or medium problem, it was a gesso issue. The worst areas were close to the middle vertical stapling at the bottom and top. It looks like, perhaps, he rigorously stretched the canvas after it was gesso’d, and the weak gesso just couldn’t take it. So this is a warning, also, about the possibility of re-stretching causing cracks in acrylic gesso. So some advice – buy high quality, and if you’re stretching your own roll, check for cracks in the gesso before painting. If you identify gesso cracking, try to sand it down and fill it in with gesso, don’t ignore it at this stage. Try to avoid traumatising your canvas with too much re-stretching or rolling. When rolling, roll with the painting turned outward. A little counter-intuitive I know, but cracks are perhaps more likely to occur through compression and creasing as through stretching. And don’t roll it too tightly. Most of the higher quality linen on the market is not reall gesso’d, it is sized with rabbit skin glue and then oil primed. If you are painting with oils or tempera grassa, this seems like a more ‘durable’ approach. |
