| body | In the mid-1960s, a Yale economics professor asked his undergraduate students to submit papers proposing startup ideas. One student, named Fred Smith, wrote his paper on the possibility of an overnight delivery system with computerized records. His idea, if executed successfully, would revolutionize the transportation industry. Allegedly, the professor gave the student a 'C' and told him that in order to earn a higher grade, the idea had to actually be feasible. A few years later, Smith became the founder of FedEx. |

| body | *The blog was cross-posted on HackerEarth - <a href="http://blog.hackerearth.com/brief-history-recruitment">here</a>* <hr /> https://i.imgsafe.org/3b/3be84cd38f.jpeg Why did Spartans have only an army of 300? Because they said, <blockquote> “Good people are always hard to find!”</blockquote> started hunting for my first job in 2008 and always believed recruitment was synonymous with the Internet and Linkedin. Some late night thoughts made me think on how did people hired “Ninjas” for their teams before the world wide web became as popular as it is today? Recruitment is something I always classified as new or modern. To my dismay, when I foraged the web, I realized it was as new as the Queen. A long weekend in the public library, some meetings with sociology professors and several GBs of high-definition on YouTube made me realize that recruitment is as old as the civilization. The first instance of a resume can be found on rock and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomberg_tablets">wooden tablets</a> dating back to ancient Rome, which had an engraving of what a person worked on, which is the first listing of the professional details of people. Another early evidence of recruitment can be seen in the history of imperial China. Imperial exams were a way of recruiting civil service candidates during the Han dynasty era around 1500 BC. These were considered one of the toughest assessments for centuries and often termed ‘exams from hell’ by the Britishers. Impressed by the scale of assessment and its positive impact on hiring excellent talent, the Queen’s army took along with them this ideal method of hiring excellent talent when it went to the United States of America. During World War II, Uncle Sam gave a call to the best in America, wanting them to join the army and help maintain peace throughout the world (pun intended!). With more and more youngsters joining the armies, the number of efficient people who could work in production declined. Despite high demand to produce arms and ammunition, there was a serious shortage of workforce. Understanding this labor crisis, recruitment agencies come forward to help. These agencies would source people through job boards, print media, interview, or assess them and then lead them to the right set of companies. It was during this period, during WWII, when recruitment agencies played a major role in empowering women across the country. Due to lack of manpower in industries, it was up to the women left behind to assume the responsibility of running the nation. Most of the job agencies opened up for women, helping them reach important places like NASA and BRL (they developed the first computer- ENIAC). Post the capture of Eagle’s Nest, the war veterans returned home. There were millions of people who had immense talent but had no jobs. Recruitment Agencies came forward again as the savior; they asked these veterans to create a resume, sharing all details of their skills. Once done, these resumes were shared with industries across the state based on their requirements. Recruitment agencies not only helped fill the job vacancies but also turned out to be the ideal bridge between candidate and industries. With the increase in globalization, industrialization, consumerism, and economic growth, the need for the right talent increased many-fold. While these agencies were helping candidates by looking for the right kind of job for them, they realized it made more sense to hire candidates for companies—candidates who had special skills and were required for a particular industry. It was at this time when recruitment agencies started to tie-up and collaborate with industries and companies to hire the candidate for them specifically. They used to get job requirements or job descriptions, post them on media and job boards, interview candidates, and hire only the impressive ones. By late 1970s and early 1980s, database and online storage were introduced to the companies, giving them an immense supply of candidates who were interested in working with them. With the huge database and development in the telecom industry, suitable candidates could be found within a few minutes, making it easy for companies to invite them to the hiring process. In 1994, the first public job search engine went live. Monster Job board was created, a place where job seekers could search the job database with the web browser. Monster Job disrupted the recruitment industry with its vision and ease of use. With the explosion of job boards and the movement of recruitment from print media to online channels, print ads for job requirements have almost become outdated. The explosion of e-recruitment agencies gave recruiters new ways to reach a global market of candidates. With e-recruitment agencies helping globalize, a new requirement solution to automate the available database popped up, giving way to what we call the ATS (Applicant Tracking System). By the end of the 1990s, the Application Tracking System became a common industry term. The principal function of an ATS is to provide a central location and database for a company's recruitment effort where the complete information from sourcing to hiring for the candidate was floated. Most of the e-recruitment agencies decided to upgrade themselves to evolving requirements, converting them into a fully automated recruitment solution — ATS. Recruitsoft -> Taleo -> Oracle Recruitmax -> Vurv -> Taleo Brassring -> Kenexa -> IBM With Web 2.0 and growth of social media and the use of mobile technology, the recruiter's ways to approach candidates changed. Now a Twitter/Facebook post with a URL link to the job description was shared with the candidates. Employers were wooing employees by video ads and slides. Many consider this recruitment to be broken, but I believe it has been always broken. Moving from pen-and-paper to agencies to ATS doesn’t fix the recruitment. A social recruitment strategy doesn’t mean posting a URL, rather it would mean an end-to-end recruitment cycle via social channels or the least by a cell phone. A fixed recruitment process would mean a process where a smart system screens candidate performance, an automated system evaluates their knowledge without any bias and an ATS that hires a candidate in a “true social sense” from social media. |

| body | [Read --- Chapter 1 - The Pain: 3000 miles journey across India](https://steemit.com/travel/@arpitmishra1506/chapter-1-the-pain-3000-miles-journey-across-india) [Read --- Chapter 2 - Circle ofConfusion: 3000 miles journey across India](https://steemit.com/travel/@arpitmishra1506/chapter-2-circle-of-confusion-3000-miles-journey-across-india) I have known people who owned bikes which were built to circumnavigate the globe. But how often do they satisfy the wanderlust? A month back while returning from a solo ride, I pulled up at a traffic signal. A car stopped beside me when I looked down, the elderly driver handed me a pamphlet which was printed with images of three motorcyclists with the same bike as mine. The picture was accompanied by an appeal ‘Ride It Somewhere Awesome’, the driver was planning a long trip with likeminded people and looking for more to join them. With conversation curtailed by green signal, we parted; with him telling me how his previous long journey has added ten years to his life and he planned to add more to his positive balance. I still remember that incidence, just not sure whether it actually happened or I just dreamt it. Reading all the books and blogs while preparing for the trip, I noted that 'Line of Tropic of Cancer' lies around 20kms before Himmatnagar, Gujarat, India. It was an undone task of my ever increasing bucket list. ‘Himmatnagar - 15kms’ said the signboard. Did I miss it; I cannot afford to turn back, damn! How could I be so casual? I always wanted to see one. The speedometer quickly dropped from 100 to 60, I felt bad. I knew I would never travel 800kms just to see a signboard. This trip was one good opportunity and I lost it. I moved on with a heavy heart. ‘Himmatnagar – 13kms’, suddenly I was grinning inside my helmet. The left indicator was glowing, I had my left arm out, and I had no intentions to go further. I finally found the blue signboard which said <center>“TROPIC OF CANCER IS PASSING FROM HERE”</center> I spent my precious twenty minutes in mid-noon of October, taking pictures of the board from all angles possible. Few selfies, few solos, few with June, I was taking as many pictures as possible. I was happy and fresh as I started 800kms, 20hours back. I kicked start June, took a last glance at the board and was on move. Udaipur, Rajasthan -- 193kms Quickly, few more bends: and I have an honor of India’s finest roads. Soon my speed snapped it, and I heard only the cry of the wind. A glance at a speedometer: Hundred and Ten. I pulled the throttle as we dipped, June loved it. A shift to left, a shift to right, again left, again right until we were passing through some of the beautiful curves of these low range mountains, it was a merry dance where the viewer cannot decide, who had the lead. The weighted machine launched itself like a sleek queen on a ramp with the whirr of the wheel, while the thump echoed across the valleys announcing its arrival to the Aravalis (Mountain range). 350kms for the day so far, I stopped at first village in the state of Rajasthan - Bicchiwada. I had been riding for almost 5hours with no food break. I was yet to decide whether I would halt at Chittorgarh, or carry on to Jaipur. I left it on the road to decide. With hot tea, and Samosa, I looked back at parked June, I could feel that she was enjoying the trip as much as me. I knew I had to understand her more, and her abilities. We together could create stories and visit many more places which people would call ‘Somewhere awesome... ‘ To Be Continued ... |

| body | [Read --- Chapter 1 - The Pain: 3000 miles journey across India](https://steemit.com/travel/@arpitmishra1506/chapter-1-the-pain-3000-miles-journey-across-india) 2 hours since I left Vadodara and Ahmedabad was still 25kms, nothing had been going right for the day. The ride had been bumpy with no top gear transmission, every time I tried to hit the cruising gear the lord of Diversions welcomed me with arms wide open (You know like Richard Gere!!). “You know I usually take the expressway, yet last time when I travelled across this highway, it had about 4 diversions” said Shashank, ahoy!! he surely had forgot to add thirty to the count. Across 80kms covered, I had been giving indicators, changing gears, honking and yelling out complaints, blaming Gods, Government official, villagers, foes, friends, and self. There were trucks, buses, and cars...cars!! Weren’t they supposed to take the expressway; it’s for them why the riders were not allowed; even when they are more quick and disciplined. Over the years of driving, I had realized that "the only thing common between a pedestrian and a rider is that they both hate four-wheelers and their owners. " Gasp! I was supposed to cancel my train reservation ticket, which I booked in case I decide to give up on the idea of this cross-country madness. I immediately stopped June to check my cell phone; with Fortuna unhappy with me there was no reason I could have had access to internet facility in the distant town of Anand. I called my friend to quickly cancel the bookings but luck doesn’t come in customized packages, we were late, the money was lost so was the time. Wasting no more time on regrets I was on move, Ahmedabad was 15kms and I was low on fuel. “Go straight, at the next circle take a left and you will be on National Highway number 8” I did as suggested; 5kms and I could see signboards for Rajkot and Kutch. I knew there was something wrong. Suddenly a flamboyant Enfield rider on his black modified 2009 model caught me, and with gestures of hand he asked “WHERE?” I pulled up my helmet to reply “UDAIPUR, Rajasthan”. We were standing by the roadside; I had taken a wrong turn. A Few minutes later I was following him through lanes of Ahmedabad where I was sure even few locales ever go. “Travelling alone?? Where are you going” he shouted, using best of his abilities to use his mouth as sprinkler which sprayed less of betel leaf and more of his words. “Jaipur... I have a friend at Vadodara, Gujarat”, I ensured he knew that I had contacts. “Need servicing or food, come along...pchhhhh” he made most of the physics he studied to spit all the juice in opposite direction calculating exact landing, with the momentum of the vehicle, the pressure of air & with the content in the juice that ensured the landing was way safe on a watery pothole. “No ...very thanks, so I need to go straight another 4kms, take left at ‘T’ junction to reach NH8” I confirmed, even after his deliberate help I had no intention to hang on. I was running low on time. Thanking him again, I paced enough to leave him behind, not seeing him in rear view mirror I stopped twice to confirm the information he gave. It’s not that I regret meeting him, but the way he caught me and the turns he made me take, made me feel insecure. Few more minutes I was on Highway, he was right. Another left and I was in the same circle where it all started, my malfunction light was on, and the fuel level was dropping quickly. I knew I cannot afford to enter the core of the city. It was 1200 hours the heat was taking the toll on me. Both my water bottles dropped from the luggage bag during any of the roller coaster bumps during last 3 hours. After desperate searching I found a cabbie with ‘Rajasthan’ on his number plate. He guided me to the outer ring road where I stopped at the first petrol pump. Refuelled, had some water - checked the map, Chittorgarh was almost 350kms I had no better option than to stop there; the Ahmadabad circle had gobbled more than an hour of my precious schedule. 10 minutes and I was on my way, next target was Himmatnagar, where they said were the last petrol pump before Gujarat – Rajasthan borders, & where the Aravalis range kissed the land. At 100kmph and sailing roads, I thought how quickly did roads surprise you, and how prejudiced are we towards people by their looks. If it would not have been for the betel eating, bragging, extrovert Ahmadabadi, it would have been in a different situation. I would had been at a wrong place, cursing my luck for the condition where no one was to blame. Himmatnagar 89kms, Udaipur 249kms said the milestone. I knew I had a lot more to cover, then getting confused in circles. To Be Continued ... |

| body | [Read --- Chapter 1 - The Pain: 3000 miles journey across India](https://steemit.com/travel/@arpitmishra1506/chapter-1-the-pain-3000-miles-journey-across-india) 2 hours since I left Vadodara and Ahmedabad was still 25kms, nothing had been going right for the day. |

Few more minutes I was on Highway, he was right.\n\n\n\nAnother left and I was in the same circle where it all started, my malfunction light was on, and the fuel level was dropping quickly. I knew I cannot afford to enter the core of the city. It was 1200 hours the heat was taking the toll on me. Both my water bottles dropped from the luggage bag during any of the roller coaster bumps during last 3 hours.\n\nAfter desperate searching I found a cabbie with ‘Rajasthan’ on his number plate. He guided me to the outer ring road where I stopped at the first petrol pump. Refuelled, had some water - checked the map, Chittorgarh was almost 350kms I had no better option than to stop there; the Ahmadabad circle had gobbled more than an hour of my precious schedule.\n\n10 minutes and I was on my way, next target was Himmatnagar, where they said were the last petrol pump before Gujarat – Rajasthan borders, & where the Aravalis range kissed the land.\n\nAt 100kmph and sailing roads, I thought how quickly did roads surprise you, and how prejudiced are we towards people by their looks. \n\nIf it would not have been for the betel eating, bragging, extrovert Ahmadabadi, it would have been in a different situation. I would had been at a wrong place, cursing my luck for the condition where no one was to blame.\n\nHimmatnagar 89kms, Udaipur 249kms said the milestone. I knew I had a lot more to cover, then getting confused in circles. \n\nTo Be Continued ...",

| body | It was 5 past four in morning, outside the window it was still dark and I was awake way early then planned, my head was pounding and my spine was still expecting the comfort of bed but it was my arm which brought me to awareness in the death of night, my left arm was paining badly, excruciatingly . The source was undetected so was the cause. I tried to hold but in vain, was at someone else’s place, and had no choice. I called upon my friend who was dead asleep. “I need a Pain relief spray, mine is in saddle bag at your Garage”, he was worried but there was no help to come, most of the medicines were in other room where rest slept. I had no choice but to tie my arm with the bungee cord and get back to sleep, I had less than an hour to get back on my way. 0700 hours; I checked my watch again, I was late...way late. My left arm was still in pain, I was tired but was running low on time; I quickly massaged the relief gel, did my daily score and was at garage within next half hour. Quickly tied the luggage, wiped off the dirt, lubricated the chain, checked the oil level took some quick snaps, switched on the ignition key and kicked ‘Thug...Thug...thug...thug...’ and comes alive the goddess, relieving me from a night of despair & agony. ‘JUNE’ had I named her “THE YOUNGER ONE”. The Goddess of marriage - voluptuous, luminous, strong, sexy and scrumptious was few to lionize. 580kms had we covered together, before reaching Vadodara (Gujarat) at 12:30 am last night. It had been a long day but not once had June showed any sign of weariness. Uneven surfaces, eye-opening holes, nerve breaking bumps we saw it all but none ceased our determination. We were good on schedule, 10 hours sharp, exactly what was planned. 775kms was the target for day 2, and if I felt brave enough 1000kms was the dare. A few minutes more and I was set to move, tied my wristwatch loosely, I believed the strap had one of the wrong nerves and caused the pain. Shashank was guiding me to the highway. Few more minutes of quick but scrumptious breakfast and I bid adieu to the warmth of comfort and hospitality of a good friend. “Vadodara to Ahmedabad is a bad patch, it would be night, by the time you reach Rajasthan, You must stay down at Udaipur or Chittorgarh “suggested Shashank. At 100kmph and 15kms from Vadodara, I was yet not sure; stopping at Udaipur or Chittorgarh was never in the plan but ... With needles of clock already striking the Nine and Twelve, I knew another 775kms before sunset was a dream run. |
