bodyOh, why, hello! I have not seen you in forever! Where have you been these last few weeks. Weeks! Has it really been that long? Didn’t we last see each other at Bill’s 80th birthday? Oh, that was so much fun. It’s crazy to think of how old Bill is now! Do you remember Bill? My, aren’t I getting old? I’m not that old, I hope. Please tell me I’m not that old. Anyways, there was something I found out just a day or so ago and I think you’d be very interested in knowing. Recently, the Sculptor, you know the one, run by Mr. and Mrs. Clay? Well, their most recent paper was all about the aliens that are coming. Dear me, I am quite frightened of what they might bring. You might not see much of me soon, I’ll be making myself scarce and just relaxing in my nice, cozy house. Did you hear what happened on Twining street? It’s just a block down from my house and my, the story really frightened me! I just had to come out and see if anyone was up and about. It is such a tragedy, what will happen to an old lady such as myself? But, gosh, there is so much news to discuss? Did you see the boat that Julia Spencer’s kids made? She’s the Sculptor’s editor, she’s very creative. No wonder her kids made that boat. It looked pretty good, and they were having fun with it. Maybe one day they’ll get a scholarship to college with their ideas. They are such nice, polite kids - they even offered to let the newspaper’s office display it! Do you think we could go out and see it, maybe? If I’m feeling up to it, my old bones have been cracking and popping a lot lately. I guess it comes with being an old lady. My time is not long in this world, so why not enjoy it? That brings me to my next bit, what did you think of Jim’s sudden closing of his bakery? I know his wife disappeared, but it doesn't mean he should close the whole bakery for an “undetermined length of time”. What will he do with that spare time? Cry over her? Why not suck it up and keep on working? If I were him, I would work twice as hard - working is the best way to distract the grieving mind. Back in my day, if something bad happened to someone, they bounced right back. Its the way these kids are raised, will all those electronics and media saying what they should and shouldn't do. Why do young people these days always have to take off so much time to grieve? I remember when my grandpa died - I took a day off school for his funeral but went right back after the funeral. I only missed half a day! Oh wait, silly me. Did I say I took a day off school? I meant I took the afternoon off - the funeral was at 2 pm and school didn’t let out till 3. My teachers still gave me homework though - ah, makes me miss those days. We worked hard but we played hard too - not like kids these days. All they do is look up stuff on their phones and browse facebook or twitter or myspace or whateve these people do now. Oh, I remember the old days. I was born 1954, one of the best years for kids. We were raised to handle things and get over them, move on. Now people just have to sit and cry over everything. “Oh look everyone, I lost my phone, I’m so bored right now, I have no imagination!” Kids these days - they should have been born in the 50s, the golden age for kids. I remember the 60s disappearances. We didn’t have phones or computers back in those days, we just had pure, hard work and our imagination. A lot of people went missing, yes, and it was a tragedy, yes, but we spent one day on them and moved on. If we didn’t, who would sell the bread? Who would sell the groceries? Who would do all of that? That's right - no one, if we hadn’t moved on. Back then, we didn’t know what had happened. But now the city says that it was probably the landslides. Well, I thought so too, but I recently picked up the newest edition of the Sculptor - something I never do - and it was all about aliens! I’m thinking it could have been aliens, while their futuristic technology and such. I do hope that, if they come, they have old croons like me to talk to, what kind of stories do they have of their grandkids? Oh, speaking of grandkids, my grandbaby just turned 9! Oh, she is such a dear, just so polite! But the kids at her school pick on her so badly - I do which her mother had stayed here with me. I could have taught those kids a lesson or two. But no - she was scared for her kids safety after the 2010 kidnappings. It was just two kids, and they were sisters! They could have been running around uncharted areas and could have fallen off a river or something! It wasn’t Josh’s fault, Josh would never do that! But no, she was scared of him. I told her, Now, see, Mary, I didn’t raise you to be scared of your own father! Josh was my husband, you know. I told her that if she moved, I would never talk to her again, and I would never visit her daughter! I didn’t mean it, you know, but I had to do something! She had me cornered, I didn’t know where to go! I wanted her to stay with me and have her kid in the same hospital I had her in, but of course she just had to leave. 6 months pregnant and she just up and moved with her husband, Lance or Lawrence or whatever his name is. We didn’t get along, you see. He lost his mom when he was young and just didn’t know how to talk to a lady, I guess. Though I kept my promise, I never went to see any of them ever again, I just have to know how my granddaughter is doing. I watch them through facebook. They blocked me on one of my accounts, but I had my other son help me get a new account. I guess I better go, I do have to babysit my other grandson, Lewie. He’s just a babe, only 3 years old! I remember when my kids were that young - oh it was awful! Awful I tell you! So much screaming and yelling and not “No I don’t want to go to school” or “I don’t want to get dressed!”. I hope little May survives this whole thing! May is my son’s husband, so you know. She’s pregnant with twins right now - I don’t know how she’ll survive! Twins! Could you imagine that? She hasn’t really told me yet, but her friend Kimber told me what their names are going to be - Emelia and Georgia if they’re girls, and Alex and Max if they’re boys. What darling little things - I can't wait to see them! But now I really have to go, I’m an hour late already! I was just moseying around in the shops when you came up and I guess I lost track of time. Anyways, I will see you later, maybe in your house next time? I haven’t cleaned my house in a week and I’d be mortified if someone saw it! I don't like that all the time, I swear! I’ve just been busy lately, my Etsy shop is doing great by the way, Richard, my son, helped me with it, and it’s better than ever before. Well, I’ll catch up later!

titleJune, Part 2
bodyI think I might have a story for you. Recently, there has been this newcomer who’s been inquiring about the events of June, 1969 or ‘67 or something like that. I’ll find out later but the things from that time have been coming back. They seem to be connected to the arrival time of this newcomer. In fact, they even talked to the old man about it! See, there’s a connection. I found this out when Betha, my wife, told me that there’s someone new in town and all of the ladies were gossiping about them and how strangely they were acting. I’ll admit I don’t know much, but I’ll find out soon enough, got it? But anyway, this story could make it big, could make us big. Can’t you see it?! The headlines printed over the town “Sculptor News Big Breakthrough '', I can see it now. What do you think about that? Anyway, the story. So, just a couple weeks ago, not sure exactly how many but you get the point, the newbie got here and just started asking around about the 1960s. They even asked me! I just thought it was some video trend or something the kids nowadays do but I jotted it down anyway. See, got it here on this note, wasn’t that smart of me? Think I could make it big in the industry? But that doesn't matter right now. Josephine, the baker’s wife, went missing. And I did some research and found out that the old man and Josephine were high school sweethearts, isn’t that just dandy? Now, I’ll need to talk to the baker about it, but I’m thinking that a segment on her would make it more interesting. Like her background and her connection to the old man, you know? So I looked at the old high school’s files and found out she was a real good student but the old man’s files are missing! I asked the daughter of the principal back then and she said there was a fire, but my grandma remembers no such fire and she’s been her all 76 years of her life. And about my grandma, I have some news about that. Ok, ok ok, so, she has been here her entire life, right? And she’s 76, right? So she’d have been in her teens when this happened, I think. Right? Yea, she's been. So I thought to ask her about the old man, but guess what? She said she doesn't remember any man like him from back then. I need to do a bit more research, the library was closed, ok? But I think that there is something fishy going on there and you know what I think it is? ALIENS, that's what! I know you’re real busy but you have to hear me out on this one. It seems crazy but - I’ll just get on with it. We’ve been seeing unseasonably heavy clouds, considering it is summer. That’s not very interesting but there’s more! We’ve heard reports of odd beeping noises coming from the field behind John Murphy’s house on Twining street. We were set to investigate but that newbie beat us to it and when we got there, there was no one there. We could not find the newbie anywhere, it was as if he got abducted, you know - by the aliens! Can’t you see it - everyone will want our newspaper! I asked the police, but they said that they could not say anything. Do you think it was because of the aliens? They're not very interesting anyway. The local bookstore got robbed and the only thing missing was a dictionary. That sounds bland now that I say it outloud, it wasn't even the newest edition. The Superfoods down the street also got robbed, but that was just for the money in the register. Let's call it a series of robberies, sounds suspicious enough, right? Crime rates rise - wait, that's even better! I'm a genius, no need to thank me. But how to connect it to the alien theory - well, it was a dictionary, right? Maybe the aliens don’t know English? Or maybe just a little, we’ll have the writers spin that one. We could just not include it, again, not the man for that. Earlier I talked about my grandma, right? Well, near her house we found some oldish looking tools, but they are like nothing I have ever seen before. There was this hammer made of some blueish thing, kinda looked spray painted, and something that looked like a leveler but not like the lever you’d see in the hardware store, if you can see that. I don’t really know what it was, it was a flat line and a bendable line with weights at each end and a rolly thing in the center - I’m doing a bad job explaining this, I’ll send you the pictures. I think it looks alien-ish, but not alien enough. Maybe we can edit it a bit in post-productions. We don’t really have people for that, though - maybe the editor could do that? Or Becky could do that - she’s here for the summer at a temp job for experience, if you didn’t remember, she’s a literature major in the college. She’s the youngest person here, she probably knows best how to do that kind of stuff. Speaking of college, my nephew is in college. He’s 23, on his last year there, and I asked him to tell me the search trends of recently and he told me it was Aliens, Area 51, and 60s Protests. It seems that there is some sort of connection here. I looked up area 51, and it is a base that supposedly contains aliens from the government. I’m not sure how true it is, I saw it on some pages, but we can hint at it. Don’t want Area 51 to be mad at us, after all. “Possible INterstellar Connections”, that could be a headline. Or just again a description. Again, not my job to figure out the wording, just get the ideas. There’s not much more, I promise I won’t use up much more of your time. None of its about the newcomer, but there are some good stories here. John Murphy found this epic boat in the back of the creek. We could have a whole segment on it, mabey write about how they made it. I didn't get a good look at it, but it kinda looks like soom wood planks bound by some sort of homemade concrete. I'm not sure how they got it to float if its concrete, which is why I said it seems homemade, see- smart? But maybe they put on some sort of water repellant, I don't know. Like I said, I didn't get a good look at it. He said he thought some kids had built it, and the offer for the boat has been up for a week - I don’t think anyone is claiming it. Do you think someone could get one of our kids to claim it and let us display it in the office? It would get us some good publicity without hurting anyone. The last story I could find was the upcoming season - football - at the, umm, college. Yeah, it was college because the high school started last week. Like always, Jenna will be leading the girls team, but Jake graduated last year, remember the article we did on it? Such a shame, he was really good at football. He never did like this town though, and would explain his sudden leaving a couple months ago. Wouldn’t be surprised if he joined the NBA. Or is it the NFA? I’m not so sure - I got the story, but I just don’t understand these sports teams! I like our team, though, don’t you worry. Much easier to understand. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you who was leading the boys team. Creed McLoskey seems to be the leader, that was a shocker. But it looks like Tom Nuddle is still injured from the last game they played - that one was a doozy. He likely won’t be able to play the rest of the season. I know I’ve taken up a lot of your time but I’ll get going now. I’ve got to head to lunch anyway, so I’ll catch you later!

titleJune
bodyJune of 1967. Ah yes, I remember that year quite well. Why wouldn't I? It was the beginning of the end for me, the start of something I can't take back now. I know who you are, I know why you're here. I bet you've heard the same thing a million time - "It's better not to know", and "Go back while you still can". And they're right. But you know what else? If you've come all the way to find me, then maybe you do have a part in this story. Maybe you'll help us find out what really happened on that day. The sun was glistening from the golden stalks of sun-burnt grass. It may not seem very poetic to say the world looked cooked, but everything seemed to flow from one golden husk to another . The golden coin of a sun to the golden grass, to the browned trees and goldenrod leaves. It felt like nature was at its prime here, in the valley. But, oftentimes, normalcy has to end. Well, that's what brings change, right? Well, here it was just a beep. Than another. And soon a monotonous beep began, slow and steady. A song without rhythm. Not expected, but not quite expected. I'm not sure how to explain it - it seems like it was natural, but exciting at the same time. Like the sighting of a hawk, or an eagle. But, not quite so magical. Mabey more like finding a ripple in a otherwise still pond - it seems natural, but unexpected, if that makes sense. At first, the beep cause quite the stir. Birds flew off their perches on their trees, hares and bunnies ran home to where they felt safest from unidentifiable threats. Deer leapt over fallen branches and trickles of water to get far far away from what could be danger. But soon, they all come back. They always do. It is funny, how life is like that. It adapts to the strangest of circumstances, always bending and adapting when necessary. We get used to the strange and odd, and just let it be. That is likely how life has survived for this long, just adapting and changing to suit the needs of whatever wants it to change. And that brings me to the device. After a few minutes of searching through the knotted grass, I found it. It was a little golden triangle with something in the middle, and some form of pictograms on it. I had looked it over a bit, but couldn't tell how it was making the noise. I wasn't even sure if that was making the beeps, but sure enough, it was. Not knowing really what else to do, I had put it in my pocket to bring back to town next time I went. You see, way out there in the fields, I couldn't just drive to town at the drop of a hat for something so trivial. A little machine that beeps? Who would I ask - the barber? The only time I remember any sort of unexpected trip to town was when my mom gave birth to my brother two weeks early. That was quite the surprise. I had planned on showing the device to my parents when I got back to the house, but one thing led to another and soon it was dark, and I still had the device. It had stopped beeping at this point, now nothing more than a wedge of gold and strange shapes. Back in the field, it had seemed so normal, but back there in the house, it had seemed so odd, so out of place. It felt like trying to bring the moon to earth - so glaringly out of place it felt wrong. I spent that night unable to sleep, the only sound in the room my own ragged breathing as everything seemed wrong. The muddy shoes I never washed after coming inside looked like the feet of a sea monster. I recall staring down a perched baseball cap, not able to distinguish what it was in the dark, terrified it was a monster staring back at me. I don't know how, but I never connected any of this the the device. It was like I was trying to push it out of my mind. Or maybe I just simply forgot about it. Looking back, that may have been for the best. I shouldn't have picked it up, I shouldn't have carried it back. But I was stupid then and now I wish I could take it back. But, you didn't come to hear about the regrets of an old man, you came to hear about the thing that has tormented me all these years. The next morning, I had cleaned my entire room. I shoved things in boxes and hid anything that had a face. My toy soldiers and the teddy bear I always had on my shelf were hidden in the deepest parts of my closet. I couldn't find the device, but didn't think anything of it. I was a messy kid, and my mom liked to say I could lose an elephant in a locked room. Gosh, I miss her lots, even after all these years. And in case you're wondering, her death had nothing to do with the disappearances. She died a few years later, while giving birth to my youngest sister. I would love to say that that night was fine, that removing my things made it all better. But it didn't. This time, the shadows had less things to hide behind. Instead of not knowing if what I was seeing was my empty fish tank or a bubble-headed creature, I knew that it was a monster. They slipped about the room as the moon circled over the house. I didn't have a bedside light or anything in those days - all I had was the overhead lights. But to reach them, I'd have to cross the floor infested with monsters. I know it was probably my imagination, but, back in the moment, I could not bring myself to leave the safe confines of my bed, step out to the darkness just to turn on the light. I should have told my parents then, but I didn't. It was an 11 year old's pride to not be scared of the dark anymore, not cry in fear when the sun sets. I was supposed to be tough, so I stayed quiet. Looking back, I'm not so sure that telling someone would have helped anyways. After weeks of endless torment, and moving back all of my stuff, I had an idea. Just like any other kid my age, I thought it was genius. I waited for my parents to go to bed, and when they did, I snuck the flashlight into my room. I hid it under my blankets and waited until the monsters showed up. I was going to show myself that it was nothing more that shadows - I thought light would fix it. Boy, was I wrong. I shone to light to the worst of them - the one right by the lightswitch, where I had seen the darkness collect. I hoped it was nothing more than nothing, but it wasn't, not at all. I know I'm stalling at this, but bringing back the memories is just so painful. In the circle of light was a monster. A monster that wasn't a shadow, wasn't just nothing. It had a long face and weirdly short legs, but the front arms were dispoportionatly long. It looked almost human, but not quite. I didn't get to see it long, as I dropped the flashlight, but I watched that thing come to life. It picked up my flashlight and stood still for a bit before starting to move around, looking in my drawers and cabinets. I wanted to close my eyes, pull the blanket over my head and scream, but I was frozen. It may seem dumb, but eventually I somehow fell asleep. I don't know if that thing cast some sort of spell or if the sleepless nights finally caught up to me but the next thing I know I was awake - safe. I told my older sister what happened and she laughed and told me it was sleep paralysis. I begged her to believe me but she was adamant. I even began to believe it - surely my overactive imagination was getting the better of me. My sister had gone to college and was home for the summer - she knew more than me. But it still gnawed at the corners of my mind. What was that thing? Why did it choose me? Or did it just not care? Was it even real? I have been thinking of that night for many long years now, over 50 if I'm right. I'm an old man now and a young lad then - so why do I still wonder what would have happened if I had moved. Just a bit. Sometimes, I wish to never go back to then but other times, I don't know. I feel like I need to know, but it almost feels like I'm not meant to know, you know? Over the next few years I would occasionally find myself alone in the dark, which life often does. While I never saw the creature again for years, I often feel like it was there with me, watching me. I can't saw it was nice, it felt suffocating. Like a bully just waiting for you to make a wrong move. Like a tiger waiting to pounce. I didn't get the impression that they were evil on the first night, but it grew slowly until I couldn't take it anymore. After the later events, I think this was just me and my fault alone, but back then I didn't have the same years I have now to ponder over it. I moved out when I was 19, and went a couple states away. I want you to know that it wasn't just the creatures I was scared of in that town. It felt like the people knew something, and it felt like - well, how do I say this. It felt like I knew it too. I would find myself staring at newcomers like they were alien and I would catch myself gossiping about them. I was a part of that town, whether or not I knew it and whether or not I liked it. I'll try to keep the next few years short. I found a wife, but she left us just a couple years ago. I had a two kids at that time, one more a few years later, a good job at a factory, managing. I was doing pretty good for myself, but there was something in the back of my mind, slowly creeping in, until it blotted out every other thought. What was that thing I had seen? It was difficult to convince my wife to go, but we took the kids and spent a month at my old town. I didn't tell her about the things, but she sure was stubborn about the whole thing. She really liked the city and she wasn't willing to head out to the "backwards country", as she called it. Yes, she was stubborn, but I do miss her. Some days, I wake up and wonder where she went before reality kicks back in. I'm sorry for delaying, we just had so many good memories together. I really loved her. But anyways, the story. We went on the guise of letting the kids have some time with their grandparents, my father had remarried a couple years prior, and for us to relax and get away from city life. Once there, I took a temporary job selling newspapers so we'd have extra money for souvenirs. I had saved up for the last year to earn a vacation for a month, and I didn't want to run out of funds. We stayed at my parent's house, and I got my old bedroom again. There wasn't enough space for two people in that room, and my Paula, my wife, refused to sleep there anyways, so I booked her a motel for a few nights while we figure out the living arrangements. I stayed with her, and things were fine, but I still needed to know - would that thing come back if I was in my room? I had thought about if for a week while my parents tried to find an air mattress for us to sleep on in the living room. It was a small town and 4 guests at once wasn't very common, even if it was just family. We warned them ahead of time, but they were getting older and not really used to having lots of people anymore. But this gave me the idea for sneaking to my room. I told Paula that there wasn't any queen matresses in the store, but there was a single. At first she insited I have it, but I refused and told her I would sleep in my old bed. I hadn't let the kids sleep in there, saying that they needed to stay together and my room didn't have a second bed. My wife saw that this would seperate us, but she saw that I need to be alone in that room. I hope she just though I needed the nostalgia, I hope she never found out. Speaking of hopes, I hope that she never found out about that night. It changed me, really changed me. I'm sorry for the backstory, but this is where you want to pay attention because this is what you came here for. I began the night by bringing up coffee, two flashlights, spare batteries, some matches, and my pocket knife. It may seem overkill but put yourself in my place for once - I had seen something in the dark. We are always told to not be afraid of the dark and there is nothing there. But there was something there. I know it sounds like the ramblings of an old man, but trust me when I say that I was terrified. I don't know what compelled my to turn the lights off, some sort of spell or perhaps pure bravery. But I waited in the dark with my coffee. I guess I had forgotten to tell you, but I had noticed that I seemed to wake up at the same time every night. It wasn't an important detail until now, but I should've mentioned it. I'm sorry. I did have a clock in my room at the time - a watch - but it didn't have an illuminated face so I'd not be able to read it even if I had it on me. I don't recall the exact time, but I guess I just knew. I spent the time waiting, with no illumination, no lights at all, waiting for this creature to come. I wish I didn't have to say this but I soon heard my younger son scream my name. I spent a second paralyzed, but soon my parental insticts kicked in. I turned on the light to see the creature once again. This time I didn't drop the flashlight, but I could tell my hand was shaking as I turned the light around my room. There were dozens of these creatures, a bit smaller than people. Their heads were smaller than mine, but their foreheads sloped out, like they were hiding vast amounts of knowledge behind them. They looked like modern people - they even had clothing. It wasn't like ours at the time, but it looked sturdy. My memory fails me on what exactly it was they were wearing, but it looked like something like denim and, not cotton, but like that, if that makes sense. They had 4 legs and seemed to rest on them, but they could stand up as well. They seemed do wrong there, standing in the light. Like deer in the headlights. They were watching me. They were waiting. After a seocnd, my son screamed my name again and they all turned. All I thought at the moment was to distrct them, keep them away. "What do you want", I had whispered just loud enough for them to hear. I know it sounds cliche but I could really think of nothing better at the moment. I was terrified for myself, scared for my son and my wife and family. I wanted answers - why did they haunt me? Why me? One of the ones in the back whispered in a cracked voice that sounded like someone just learning english. "You know" it has said. You may be able to guess what they wanted by the start of my tale, but I didn't know this at the time. Remember, to me it was just a peculiar object I had found as a boy, not a big deal. Like finding a cool bottle out in the woods or something. I will remember this next second for the rest of my life. One crawled up to me at speeds I can harley fathom and licked my face. Its tougue had no moisture and I assume it was some sort of ritual I don't know about. It whispered to me to find it. They all turned and ran out the door and I gave chase, but I could see them going into my son's room. When I went in it again, he was gone. They were all gone. I called the cops the next morning, as the police didn't operate at night there, but they never found the kidnapper. I cut the vacation short and dragged my grieving family home. It was stuffed in a very old pair of jeans, and as I saw it in the light, I knew that it was what they wanted. I know you want an ending, but I can't give one to you. Here, take this. I'm an old man now, weak, my health is failing me. I fear I'll be following my wife soon enough and I can't end my own story. Please, save the town. I don't know what happened on that warm June day, but I hope that you can find out.

"body": "June of 1967. Ah yes, I remember that year quite well. Why wouldn't I? It was the beginning of the end for me, the start of something I can't take back now. I know who you are, I know why you're here. I bet you've heard the same thing a million time - \"It's better not to know\", and \"Go back while you still can\". And they're right. But you know what else? If you've come all the way to find me, then maybe you do have a part in this story. Maybe you'll help us find out what really happened on that day.\n\nThe sun was glistening from the golden stalks of sun-burnt grass. It may not seem very poetic to say the world looked cooked, but everything seemed to flow from one golden husk to another . The golden coin of a sun to the golden grass, to the browned trees and goldenrod leaves. It felt like nature was at its prime here, in the valley.\n\nBut, oftentimes, normalcy has to end. Mabey more like finding a ripple in a otherwise still pond - it seems natural, but unexpected, if that makes sense.\n\nAt first, the beep cause quite the stir. Birds flew off their perches on their trees, hares and bunnies ran home to where they felt safest from unidentifiable threats. Deer leapt over fallen branches and trickles of water to get far far away from what could be danger. But soon, they all come back. They always do.\n\nIt is funny, how life is like that. It adapts to the strangest of circumstances, always bending and adapting when necessary. We get used to the strange and odd, and just let it be. That is likely how life has survived for this long, just adapting and changing to suit the needs of whatever wants it to change.\n\nAnd that brings me to the device. \n\nI had planned on showing the device to my parents when I got back to the house, but one thing led to another and soon it was dark, and I still had the device. It had stopped beeping at this point, now nothing more than a wedge of gold and strange shapes. Back in the field, it had seemed so normal, but back there in the house, it had seemed so odd, so out of place. It felt like trying to bring the moon to earth - so glaringly out of place it felt wrong. bodyThe wind rustles through the almost-empty husks, pushing the leaves aside to pass through the cornfields. Steadily passing the fields, it goes on and on, not knowing where to or why, and silently dying on the banks of the swamp. As it passes, farmers raise their sun-tanned faces to it, breathing in the fresh air. It is rare that wind ever comes this way. Soon, though, the farmers turn back to their work. They open every husk, and examine it for kernels. It is rare to find an ear of corn, so every bit counts. They collect every edible ear in a bag and bring it home that night. They work as hard and as fast as they can.Today is the last day before the yearly storm. The sweat drips off their faces as they examined the last stalks. A scattering of rain drops, hitting aluminum roofing and sending the people into a silent panic. The farmers were still out there. The farmers eyes grew in fear and they ran. They ran back to their homes, back to their families. This was no time to be outside. Families grabbed belongings and headed down into the cellar, stocked and prepared for the storm. The last one caught them unprepared, and they lost many in numbers. Now they didn’t have enough to lose anyone. The farmers charge to their houses, trying to keep their balance in the now slippery dust. They needed to get back. They needed to. Only a few made it. The starmed washed over like a wave, crushing everything in its path. One little girl cried, as she forgot her favorite doll. Another cried for their house. But nothing would be spared. The wind raged, as if making up for every time it hadn’t blown. The torrent of rain poured from the sky. Dead bushes of knotted wood uprooted, pulled from the muddy swampland that is now the earth. As the week passes by, the citizens use stores and stocks to survive. No fresh air, no going outside. Just sitting in small buildings until the storm passes, feeling trapped - unprepared. Though, of course, they have been preparing since last year. After the week is over, finally they leave - once again breathing in the fresh air, the purity of it all. It only last a little while, though, before the stench of the rotting planet comes back in full force. But for now, they were content with just being there and not being stuck in their cellars for a while. As they relax, wondering when they could rebuild their houses, a siren pierced across the emptiness, filling the citizens minds with fear. Then, over the intercom, a voice is heard. “Citizens, we are pleased to announce that, after centuries of study, we have found a new planet to inhabit. It is a bit cooler, more the temperature of our planet before the pollution, but it is uninhabitable. There is water, and a variety of landscapes not unlike our own, ranging from tall mountains to shrubby lowlands. We will be leaving next week, please pack your bags. Bring one carry-on and one suitcase each, all with identifiers on them. No more.” The message was repeated twice more and then there was silence. Murmurs aroused in each family as hope began to once more paint their skies. A flurry of action followed this brief calm, with hurried packing and decision-making filling the noise. This was no longer a period of brief relaxation for their troubles - it was a time of action before peace. Some were scared to leave the comfort of a home they had known their whole life, others were excited at the prospect of a new life. But all would agree - it would change their lives forever. The next week they were packed and ready, and they slowly filled the seats of the rocket. With their carry-on in hand, and their luggage in the baggage, they set off. Anxious faces peered from the windows as they left their once-home forever, never to go back. Some cried, some cheered. But there was no turning back now. They traveled for two months. Most of the time they stayed contained in their seats, but the occasionally entered the small lounge in the center of the plane. There was not much to do, and they quickly became bored and eventually resorted to a routine, each individualized and personalized. However, two months is not forever, though it certainly felt like it. As the new planet became closer and closer, they oohed and ahhed over the spectacle. Unlike their once planet, this planet had vibrant hues and bright shades. You could make out the seas and the land, the coverage. You could see the wonder of the planet, the moon, and stars around it. It was beautiful. As they landed, they noticed something not described before. There was life, and it seems intelligent. These beings were tall, seeming frail looking. Their skin ranged in many vibrant hues and shades, their eyes a variety of shades. They had odd, thin, tentacle-looking things on their skulls, flaps at the side of their heads. The wore garnishes that covered their bodies in very vibrant hues, and the citizens on the ship couldn’t help but wonder why everything was so bright. It was like looking at a candy world. But, even with the bright hues, they were scared. They were on a foreign planet with aliens nearby and they didn’t know what to do. A crackling voice rang out in the confusion. “Please remain seated. A team of scientists are being sent out to examine the aliens. Remain seated.” Anxious citizens peered out the now-dusty windows, hoping to catch a glimpse of the team. They were in full hazmat suits, something the citizens had never seen before. As the one who could see the alien creatures watched, one of them had a strange contortion of their face as the lifted one appendix to shout in a foreign language, unbeknownst to them. However, friend, the language is not foreign to us, as we know it very well, and I can translate for you - “ALIENS!” ![astronomy-ball-bright-39561.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZLdJD8dgwL38EE8VHXP4mwh8YGtNajEGoVzSnCHi4hbX/astronomy-ball-bright-39561.jpg) Free Image from Pexels

titleWhen the Wind Turns Dark - Rewrite
bodyWhen all hope is lost is when the wind turns dark and the sky turns black. When no one cares what happens next is when the wind howls in cries worse than any earthly beast and the once-mighty predators cower in fear from the sound of the wind itself. When the wind is an enemy of all, when it frightens all, striking fear in the hearts of even the most brave. When birds drop dead with no cause, and fish float up, white bellies littering the seas. It is when the hunters of the land disappear, one by one, is when we hide. Hunter and hunted alike, big or small, fast or slow - we hide. We are no longer in petty disputes of strength, no longer the predators and prey. We are all prey, we are all in danger. We fight and train, but to most, it is fruitless. Only the strongest of the strong are left in the end. Every creature, living or dead, know or has known of these beats. Always fearing when the next time may come. Always living in fear for if they may be next. The weak are left behind - only the strongest can keep up. Everyone knows them, yet know nothing about them. Who are they and where they come from are questions without answers, questions that echo in all of our minds. Why? Why do they filter the population in such a cruel, devastating way? Why must they do this? The questions arise on many minds, but to no answer. The last of our breath, fogging the chilled air - “Why?”. At night, every night, when the stars wink - you know they are always watching, always waiting. ![clouds-cold-dawn-826345.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmY3yGn57MYPrDJg3K9FwgyZSvHrS79UJN5eyLnaEP7sD2/clouds-cold-dawn-826345.jpg) Image from Pexel.

When the wind is an enemy of all, when it frightens all, striking fear in the hearts of even the most brave.\n\nWhen birds drop dead with no cause, and fish float up, white bellies littering the seas. It is when the hunters of the land disappear, one by one, is when we hide.\n\nHunter and hunted alike, big or small, fast or slow - we hide. We are no longer in petty disputes of strength, no longer the predators and prey. We are all prey, we are all in danger. We fight and train, but to most, it is fruitless. Only the strongest of the strong are left in the end.\n\nEvery creature, living or dead, know or has known of these beats. Always fearing when the next time may come. Always living in fear for if they may be next. The weak are left behind - only the strongest can keep up.\n\nEveryone knows them, yet know nothing about them. Who are they and where they come from are questions without answers, questions that echo in all of our minds. Why? Why do they filter the population in such a cruel, devastating way? Why must they do this?\n\nThe questions arise on many minds, but to no answer. The last of our breath, fogging the chilled air - “Why?”.\n\nAt night, every night, when the stars wink - you know they are always watching, always waiting.\n\n![clouds-cold-dawn-826345.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmY3yGn57MYPrDJg3K9FwgyZSvHrS79UJN5eyLnaEP7sD2/clouds-cold-dawn-826345.jpg)\n\nImage from Pexel.",

titleLittle Town
bodyEveryone knows. But no one will tell. This is the unspoken motto of a small, middle-of-nowhere village by the name of Center. Why the name Center? No one knows for sure, but maybe the founder had grand plans of the place being bustling center. If so, they were wrong. Very, very wrong. By small town standards, this place is miniscule - barely making the 100 population mark. Not even on the major maps. In fact, not even on any maps. But, if you are really observant, you will notice an irregularity in the maps. The neighboring town says the place is a forest, another says a field, and yet another an uncrossable mountain. And for whatever reason, no one goes there. Tourists to the place are few and far between - say once a decade of two. But enough on the size of the town. The town had more than enough secrets to make up for its diminutive size. As the sun began to set on the coldest day of the year, a hiker desperate to get home stumbles across the village. He begins to approach one of the villagers, but a cold feeling lurks around the village and its population. He warily hangs back, creeping along the edge of the tree line, seeing if there was a store or something nearby. The only store he sees is a small, worn down shack. It seemed like it would never make it pass house regulations, but it was obviously in use. A banner hung outside the place declaring “Miller’s General Store”. The hiker wondered if he could find some help in there - a map or a phone, maybe. He is about to go up when that same sinking feeling reels in and he stays put. Wondering why he is getting that feeling, he examines the little town. Just a circle of buildings around a clearing. It was obviously an old town, with peeling paint and worn wood. But that was not even the strangest part - it was how everyone was outside. The storekeepers lounged outside, the residents hung around in tight-knit groups, chattering about unimportant topics. He wondered if they had anything better to do. He catches a glint of light as the setting sun hits the top of the nearby mountain, and all the people become strangely quiet - from the youngest babies to the oldest inhabitants. And, as one, they rise, as if to the same tune of slow, unheard music, and walk back to their abodes which ringed the town. Step ….. Step ….. Step ….. Step. A set of drums in perfect tune - oiled machines in harmony. The hiker stopped to stare gape mouthed at the phenomenon. He was a hiker, and had seen small town do odd things, but nothing to this extent. It was as if they had the same brain controlling ech body at once. And, as if on cue, each door shut at the exact moment the sun had disappeared from the horizon. And, as if waiting for the invisible hand, an invisible pause, the village quieted. Birds stopped their music, footsteps ceased. Every noise the hiker had ever gotten used to on his many hikes, the ones that seemed forever, were gone. It was as if someone had pressed the mute button - it was not just quiet. There was no sound. The hiker reeled back a bit, as if unsure of himself. But, slowly, as if drawn in by a puppet string, a month to a flame, he walked to the exact middle of the clearing which housed the village. A little dazed, he stood in misty silence until the first star appeared. Finally, the note played and every one of the villagers opened their door and began to walk in perfect harmony, the eerie tune at which they danced finally being heard. The curtain was drawn, the actors revealed. They mechanically walked to the lone hiker, who began to whimper. He didn't know why he went that way, he didn’t know why he was so drawn to the town. But he was too afraid to move. Finally, as the villagers approached the man, the leader - and he was obviously the leader, as he had confidence and a badge to prove it - reached forward, the others creating a circle which ringed the man. The hiker began to fidget a little, tugging at his sleeves and adjusting himself. And he began a speech. A speech of how the world first began, how this village is the very tie of existence itself. How magic works, how the world operates. He told of every blooming flower, every living existence to graze the earth. He told the story of the universe. Soon, the hiker stopped fidgeting and just listened in awe. As the speech came to a close, the last remains bouncing off the mountains, he asked the man one simple question - “Do you accept?” It was a question to accept the role of which brought him to the village. He was one of the selected few who could be brought to this place, one of the few who could accept this. He knew all he had to do is say ‘yes’, all he had to do was agree. The man stilled, as if to think, and spoke the words of acceptance into their lives. “Yup.” The man smiled. “So it begins.” The leader stepped back as the villagers stepped forwards, murmured words of thanks filling the hiker’s head as he was accepted into the village. As he was led to his new house, his new wife smiling at the door with children peeking out from behind her, he realized the meaning of the name Center. Not the center of a place, of people. But the center of the universe. ![barn-clouds-country-462110.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPZrcw8AKH9g9udkCN8ZRPR7yFF4wq93DDfQqDraPnLWu/barn-clouds-country-462110.jpg)

bodyIt is not unusual to look in a mirror and see something that you didn't notice before, only to turn and see it there. But what is unusual is to see something that is not actually there. This is often so tiny, and mostly overlooked. Soon, every time you glanced into the mirror a small thing has changed. Something you did not notice before. As the changes grew, more and more, it became clear that the changes weren't just in the mirror. Small changes began to appear in real life. The same as in the mirror. It was as if - but, that can't be possible. After years and years of minor changes, little "fixes" to the world, they became to become clear. You would look in the mirror to see yourself and - yourself. Another one of you. You would turn around and then - nothing. You look back and it is there again. Everyone saw this and panic ensued. Mirror companies crashed in business, mirror shards were everywhere. But they were there in every reflective surface. No one knew what to do. Everyplace in the world, everywhere, had this happen. Protests and experiments, all to no avail. Soon people began to disappear and the connection was immediately linked. Panic rose and soon no one knew what to do. More and more people began to adapt lives without reflective surfaces. But this won't help them. As you know, mirrors only reflect things.

titleExperiment #246
bodyExperiment #246 “On a small island in the middle of nowhere, there is a secret lab. Kept well away from other places and perfect for a secret experiment. Have you ever heard of Experiment #1,117? Well, this is the same place, but before the incident. Experiment #246 (Also known as just “246”)started off as a normal experiment. 246 was a test on time itself, however the starting was a bit rough. Scientist on the mainland found a way to change time itself, but all of those that participated in the experiment quit and were never seen again. This meant that when the experiment was transferred to the Island for test continuation, the instructions were half-done notes and a scrawl of ideas. No real instructions. After weeks of different testings based on the notes, the scientists accidentally created a being that could, control the idea of time. No - the scientists learned lots about time and learned that it would not be possible to control time with current technology. However, this being could make time seem to go faster or slower, at least to itself, but speeding up or slowing down its body. This meant that it could possibly go 100 years in the future, yet only be one year older. This was a huge breakthrough for the scientists and they were close to sharing the information, but restrained themselves, as their motto was “Unknown, unheard, unseen.” They continued tests for fifty years and only when they had conclusively determined the creature as “practically immune” did they realize their mistake. This creature, as it was an embodiment of time itself, could change it’s own body form, just as time has no form. It creeps through the labs and leaves at times when no one notices. Increased security was issued, yet it never seemed to last. It was as if the creature could manipulate their minds. At this point, the scientists concluded that this experiment was too dangerous to continue, even for the Island’s standards. They resolved to kill it. You, dear reader, have probably already noticed the mistake they made. They had forgotten about the small bit of writing at the bottom of the page, the fine printed letters - Virtually indestructible. Iron rusted before it was able to be used - probably the the effect of speeding the slowing of time used by 246 - bullets never reached their targets, dropping and bowing to the force of gravity. Any other weapon known to mankind was corroded by the force of time, broken down to it’s harmless elements or broken by the passing of unimaginable time. The creature lived, and was gone the next day. Now, what did this creature look like, you may be asking. According to my research, this creature looked like if you were to look upon a clear void with no end. Just seeing clear until your eyes could see no longer - yet contained in a small, four-legged creature. It loves to hide in shadows," Found in a small, leather-bound journal in a small hut of the coast of the Mainland. -The Clouds ![antique-classic-clock-1095601.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSZDr8VmjcdTneri4rXsuZnorFdtJv9qaVThhtML1eaDa/antique-classic-clock-1095601.jpg)

bodyDon’t be scared of the monsters in the closet. Be scared of the monsters not in the closet. The man watching me outside my window was dead two weeks ago. I thought she was dead, but she wasn’t. - and it's rerun, - I thought she was alive, but she wasn't. The mirror isn't the only way out. But it's the only way in. You hear a tapping at the window. But you have no windows. Don't be scared of the dark. Be scared of what made the dark. Don't be scared of the wind. Be scared when it's not the wind. Why are you scared when it's nighttime? The night is too obvious. ![abandoned-black-and-white-building-162389.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQma8bnb7z4sNtenF8BuWrkGzWSxzqWm4PMn7B4URkmBn9c/abandoned-black-and-white-building-162389.jpg).

titleThe Cottage
body**All aspects of this story are fictional.** On a small mountain by a small village there was a house. The house at one point had been a small, two room cottage and was bought and sold as the years passed. After 50, 60 years of this rinse - and - repeat formula, the house was looking run-down. Fewer and fewer people bought the cottage, and sales declined until it was practically abandoned. But one day, someone appeared in the house. No one knew how they got here, and reports of the house being bought appeared where there were no signs of them the day previous. As if the records had rewritten themselves. When did this happen, you may ask? All Hallow’s Eve. The next day, October 31st, a pumpkin was put out. Carved like any other pumpkin, a smile and silly eyes to match. A candle was put inside, the wax dripping down the sides and onto the base of the pumpkin. ![autumn-carved-creepy-1598181.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNrJfonyHzxXWMHsRB3uqAMDJcQEUe41TY3FXCYGeDdCF/autumn-carved-creepy-1598181.jpg) Courtesy of Pexels As trick-or-treating started, an eerie green fog loosely hung around the building - barely distinguishable, yet noticeable all the same. People dared each other to go up to the door, to knock and say “Trick-or-treat!.” But it seemed as though no one had the courage to do so, and when the threats and dares were retaliated, teasing faded and stopped. No one dared go near this house. Then, as suddenly as they had arrived, they disappeared without a trace. No one knew who they were, but the fog was gone and the pumpkin was too. Life went on and soon no one remembered what had happened on that night. Until the next Halloween. Decorations were put out and on Halloween eve, the empty cottage was once again inhabited. The pumpkin reappeared, softer and more fragile than before, as if midway through decaying, and the fog settled thicker around the house this time - yet still, you could only notice the fog if you were looking for it. Wallpaper peeled and the wooden steps were worn and cracked, as if years of trick-or-treaters had stained them with scuff marks of rubber soles. Window panes were dirty and stained, as if little fingers were pressed against them, peering inside - or outside, wanting to get out. But none of that could have happened, as no one dared go near the cottage. New decor was put up. A new pumpkin was out, with an unsetting leer, as if it knew what you were thinking. ![candle-creepy-dark-236277.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmURYKHxVbuaPD8yGi997syUm6AwNEipdo7ScmWLoajnQy/candle-creepy-dark-236277.jpg) From : Pexels A scarecrow was added to the collection, leaning over the fence and leering at you, as if it could just walk down and chase you. And when you would stare at it for long enough, you would swear you saw it blink. Again, no one dared go near this little cottage, and no one even dared speak about it. The next day it was all gone. Year after year, the cottage would appear and disappear every halloween, each time more and more grimy and run down, the pumpkins decaying and the new decor only piling on to the clutter. One year, someone - a very dumb one - dared say something about the cottage, as all had done their best to ignore it. On All Hallow’s Eve, a party began and people were chatting. One of them, the aforementioned dumb one, began to speak. “You know what?! This cottage is stupid and we should take it down next year - everyone hates it!” Everyone else in the room was uncomfortable, as they tried their best to forget about the cottage. “And I say, tomorrow we go and burn it!” Yet still silence ensued this remark and everyone in the room was getting more and more uncomfortable as people left, as if to flee from the thoughts of the cottage. But no matter what they did, the thoughts chased them the whole day, though no one brought up the topic again. The next morning he was gone. The next halloween there was a new decoration, looking oddly human, with glazed eyes and not-quite-fake-but-not-quite-real skin. After this, no one dared speak out against the cottage. But one brave and curious soul tried to speak up for the cottage. But their words were spoken without real conviction. They, too, added to the collection - the cottage knew. From then on, no one dared speak about the incident, or even write about it - nothing. All evidence from any standpoint was missing - yet it was there. Everyone knew it, but no one dared do a thing. Until on it’s 100th occurrence, everyone decided to speak up.They were sick of the strange disappearances, sick of the fear they felt every year. They wanted to burn the cottage, they knew it was no match for the thousand people in residency. “Wow, what a ghost town. I wonder who was originally here and what made them leave.” The amature scientist said, wishing he did not get separated from his group - on halloween at that! “Woah! This cottage had over a thousand decorations! Why would someone come all the way out here to set up decorations for this cottage?” They wondered out loud. “And what is that smell?” As they turned to leave, the faces all turned to him, watching him go down a path. ![abandoned-creepy-decay-373511.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmfPWvTUMWW4vTNTRdHQ3ZJmoKokt2g1cZV4grhECe2meV/abandoned-creepy-decay-373511.jpg)
