| title | TIME TRAVEL MIGHT BE A ONE WAY TICKET! |
| body | The capacity to travel through time has long been welcomed by science fiction and disputed by theoretical physicists, whether it is to correct a mistake in the past or gain insight into the future. While the discussion over whether or not it is conceivable to travel into the past continues, scientists have decided that travelling into the future is most certainly possible. You don't even need a wormhole or a DeLorean to accomplish this. Time dilation, a characteristic of Einstein's special relativity, is used in real-life time travel. Einstein was the first to recognise that, contrary to popular belief, time does not remain constant as you move faster across space. Einstein reimagined space itself as part of his theory. He coined the term "spacetime," which combines the three dimensions of space and the one dimension of time into one concept. Instead of thinking of space as a flat and inflexible area that retains all of the objects in the universe, Einstein saw it as curved and flexible, capable of forming gravitational dips around masses that pull other items in, similar to how a bowling ball in the centre of a trampoline causes any smaller object on the trampoline to slide towards the centre. Einstein's curved spacetime as a computer-generated image. The Earth causes a gravitational dip in spacetime's fabric that is deepest at its centre. The closer an object approaches the dip's centre, the faster it accelerates. The gravitational dip's centre is found at the Earth's core, where gravitational acceleration is greatest. Because time slows down as you move faster through space, according to Einstein's theory, the closer an object is to the Earth's centre, the slower time travels for that thing. GPS satellites, which orbit 20,200 kilometres above the Earth's surface, exhibit this effect. Due to time dilation, these satellites have incredibly precise clocks onboard that gain an average of 38 microseconds every day. While the time advantage may appear tiny, GPS satellites rely on their inbuilt clocks to keep their worldwide positioning exact. Running at 38 microseconds per second would result in a location mistake of roughly 10 kilometres, which would grow everyday if the timing difference was not adjusted on a regular basis. The film Interstellar explained the concept of time dilation in a very apt manner. Let’s get back to time travel before this quickly becomes a film review..lol In the movie Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey and his crew land on a planet with an intense gravitational field created by a nearby black hole, which causes time dilation. Time slows drastically for the crew on the planet due to the black hole's immense gravitational effect, making one hour on the surface comparable to seven years on Earth. This explains why Matthew McConaughey's daughter is an elderly woman when the team returns to Earth, yet he looks to be the same age as when he departed. So, why hasn't humankind been able to make such significant jumps forward in time? This question has a simple answer: velocity. To send a traveller years into the future, humankind would have to either use the extreme gravitational acceleration induced by black holes or send the traveller rocketing into space at close to the speed of light (approximately 1 billion km/h). With our existing technology, people can only jump a few microseconds into the future. But, if one day, technology permits us to send a human into the future by travelling at near-light speed, would the traveller be able to employ time dilation to return to the past and report her findings? “Interstellar travel at near to the speed of light may be possible,” says Dr. Jaymie Matthews, an astrophysics professor at the University of British Columbia. “However, this voyage is only one way — into the future, not back in time.” Is it true that we will never be able to return to the past since we can't use time dilation? Possibly not. Einstein postulated that a sort of wormhole called an Einstein-Rosen bridge may be used to travel back in time. Wormholes are hypothetical portions of spacetime that are distorted in such a way that they connect two places in space. Representation of wormhole in 3d space If this bridge in space was stable enough, Einstein's calculations showed that it could theoretically connect two places in time instead. “Right now, even an Einstein-Rosen bridge can't be utilised to travel back in time because it doesn't live long enough — it's not stable,” Matthews argues. “Even if it were stable, it would necessitate other physics, which we lack. Hypothetical particles and states of matter with "abnormal" physical features, such as a particle with a negative mass, that would defy established physical principles. That's why "wormholes" only exist in science fiction." While it would be fascinating to travel back in time to see dinosaurs or to meet Albert Einstein and demonstrate the fact of time travel to him, it may be best if the past is left alone. Traveling to the past opens the door of making a change that could harm the future. In Back to the Future, for example, Marty McFly travels to the past and accidentally prevents his parents from meeting, almost preventing his own existence. But how could he have travelled back in time in the first place if he had undone his own existence? Marty's exploits are based on a variant of the grandfather paradox: what happens if you kill your grandfather before your father is born? If you're successful, how did you come to be alive in the first place to murder your grandfather? A recent study from the University of Queensland may hold the key to solving this perplexing puzzle. The researchers show that paradox-free time travel is achievable in this work, demonstrating that the cosmos will self-correct to prevent paradoxes. If this is true, we would never be able to change events in the past to create a new future, even if we could travel back in time. While these new discoveries are fascinating, there appears to be further evidence that, while time dilation allows us to see into the future, we will never be able to travel back in time. “The clearest evidence we have that time travel [to the past] is not conceivable, and never will be, is that we have not been invaded by hordes of visitors from the future,” said the late Stephen Hawking in his book Black Holes and Baby Universes. REFERENCES:
https://phys.org/news/2020-05-future-totally.html
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-44771942 DONT FORGET TO UPVOTE, REPOST AND SUBSCRIBE TO MY PAGE FOR SIMILAR CONTENT! | title | THE SECRET BEHIND SELF-MOTIVATION |
| body | We all appear to know how to live well, but only a small percentage of us can truly achieve it. When put to the objective empirical test, many purported incentive tactics consistently fall short and are useless. We may be able to devise techniques and provide recommendations for motivating ourselves and others. Unfortunately, what is simple is rarely the best solution. Science can be defined as the systematic oversimplification of information. Consider the following scenario: “How can I encourage my employees to be more innovative and work harder?” Perhaps we can swiftly respond with a seemingly logical satisfactory response, such as that they provide enticing incentives. While this may appear to be a realistic option, such responses are rarely helpful, not to mention that they can occasionally cause considerable harm, such as sabotaging the very motivation that the person was attempting to encourage. Those who have spent enough time studying motivation frequently tell us that they have come to two conclusions: (1) not all attempts to motivate others and oneself are successful, and (2) what is easy to accomplish in practise is rarely the most effective. Motivation researchers have to go back to the drawing board several times to perform the difficult job of devising successful interventions and motivational supports, based on the general observation that "what is easy to do is rarely what is effective." The most comforting prospect a man can have, based on his current moral position, is to look forward to something permanent and to continue progressing toward an even greater future. Many people who need to use motivational tactics in their job and personal lives come to the same conclusion. Teachers who take the effort to adapt the lesson plan into activities that children find intriguing, curiosity-provoking, and personally inspiring have a lot more success persuading their kids to read. When leaders consider their employees' perspectives and invite them to create their own self-endorsed work goals, they have a much better chance of stimulating their employees' innovation and hard work. Even parents who make an effort to fully understand why their children do not want to be prosocial and take the time to explain the benefits of partaking in such activities are more successful in motivating their children to engage in socially constructive behaviours. We often find that we have more success inspiring others when we replace providing directives and demands with working slowly and methodically to see the problem from the other person's perspective, asking for feedback and recommendations, and then pulling all of that knowledge together to offer some constructive goals and solutions. Although all of these methods for motivating and engaging others are tough to master, they are well worth the time and effort it takes to master them. You are correct, whether you believe you can or cannot. Motivation is a difficult concept to grasp and much more difficult to fully comprehend. Motives, according to motivation research, are internal experiences that can be classified as needs, cognitions, and emotions, and are influenced by antecedent variables such as environmental occurrences and social situations. These internal and environmental forces put us in the direction of how we might intervene to boost motivation. We can design interventions that address physiological or psychological demands, specific cognitive processes linked with motivation status, or emotional states, as well as make environmental alterations to create an optimal context for enhanced motivation, depending on the motivational challenge we're dealing with. |

| title | ARE YOU CONFIRMATION BIASED? |
| body | Our tendency to cherry-pick information that validates our previous opinions or thoughts is known as confirmation bias. Confirmation bias describes how two people with opposing viewpoints on a subject might both see the same information and feel justified by it. When it comes to deeply held, ideological, or emotionally charged beliefs, this cognitive bias is most prominent. Failure to analyse information objectively can result in significant errors. We can learn to recognise it in ourselves and others if we grasp this. We should be wary of data that appears to confirm our beliefs right away. Why You Should Seek Out Disconfirming Evidence Because of Confirmation Bias Understanding how confirmation bias works can help us understand why we feel others "cannot see sense." In their book The Web of Belief, Willard V. Quine and J.S. Ullian explained this bias as follows: The want to be correct and the desire to have been correct are two distinct desires, and the sooner we can distinguish them, the better. The thirst for truth is the desire to be correct. There is nothing but positive to be said for it on all points, both practical and theoretical. On the other side, the urge to be correct is the pride that precedes a collapse. It prevents us from realising we were mistaken, and hence halts the advancement of our knowledge. Experiments dating back to the 1960s indicated that rather than questioning or seeking new beliefs, we tend to affirm the ones we already have. Other studies has showed our unwavering desire to impose our beliefs. Warren Buffet said that, what the human being excels at is interpreting all new information while maintaining their previous conclusions. Confirmation bias, like many mental models, was initially identified by the ancient Greeks. Thucydides described this tendency as follows in The History of the Peloponnesian War: ”Because it is human nature to entrust what they desire to haphazard hope, and to dismiss what they do not desire with sovereign reason.” It's understandable that we employ this mental shortcut. It takes a lot of mental work to evaluate evidence (especially when it's intricate or confusing). Our minds seek to take shortcuts whenever possible. This cuts down on the time it takes to make decisions, which is especially useful when we're under pressure. Our brain are unequipped to deal with the modern world, as numerous evolutionary biologists have pointed out. People have had very little new information over their lifetimes for most of human history. The majority of decisions were made for the sake of survival. We are continuously bombarded with new information and must make several complex decisions every day. We have a natural propensity to take shortcuts to avoid feeling overwhelmed. “We give extra weight to information that permits us to come to the conclusion we want to reach,” Ziva Kunda stated in “The Case for Motivated Reasoning.” Accepting evidence that supports our beliefs is simple and needs no mental effort. We become wary of contradictory information and look for a justification to dismiss it. Sia Mohajer wrote in her book The Little Book of Stupidity that confirmation bias is so pervasive in one’s development and reality that one may not even be aware of it. We seek evidence that supports our worldviews and ideas, while ignoring evidence that contradicts them... We have been given the gift of cognitive biases in order to simplify the world and make it correspond to our expectations. And as stated by Francis Bacon, once the human mind has formed an opinion, it drags everything else to support and agree with it. Despite the fact that there are a greater quantity and weight of examples on the other side, it either ignores and dismisses them, or sets them aside and rejects them. REFERENCES:
https://www.britannica.com/science/confirmation-bias
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1037/1089-2680.2.2.175
https://thedecisionlab.com/biases/confirmation-bias/ DONT FORGET TO UPVOTE, RESTEEM. | title | THE MYSTERY BEHIND MILKY SEA |
| body | Captain Raphael Semmes wrote from his cabin on the CSS Alabama in 1864 about going through the Panama Canal "I was shocked as I moved from the deep blue sea to a patch of bright blue water... The Alabama could have been envisaged as a phantom ship illuminated up by the sickly and unearthly brilliance of a phantom sea with a little stretch of the imagination..." Gliding across a'milky sea' for hours may have been terrible for seafarers who often believed in sea monsters and mermaids. Source: Photographed by James Garlick, shot in Tasmania The milky sea, also known as mareel, is created by billions of trillions of bioluminescent bacteria that reside throughout the water column from the surface to the sea floor. In the 1800s, mesmerised sailors had no idea what was creating the effect, but they were certain it was something awful. It looked like milk or clouds from horizon to horizon, ploughing through molten lead or sailing across a field of snow, according to them. We now have a better grasp of what happens, but how and why it happens remains a mystery. Bioluminescence is "the white whale of satellite remote sensing," according to Steven Miller, a senior research scientist at Colorado State University. Earlier sensors couldn't detect it, but Miller's instruments can detect low quantities of light, such as moonlight. In 1995, a report from the steamer Lima provided him with his most successful satellite view of the milky sea. While cruising off the coast of Somalia, the captain of the Lima noticed a whiteish glow on the horizon, which was followed 15 minutes later by the sea, which appeared to turn into "a field of snow" from horizon to horizon. Miller examined archive satellite imagery of the area to see whether any evidence of the phenomenon could be found; to his surprise, he discovered'smudges,' the first documented sighting of a bioluminescent milky sea. The scale is mind-boggling: a glistening sea expanse the size of Connecticut, or 15,000 square kilometres. We haven't solved the puzzle of the milky seas... we just need to learn a lot more,” Steven Miller adds. “We were able to detect them, but there is no definite proof of how or why they form... we simply need to learn more about it.” Miller's team is utilising satellites to locate the next milky sea, after which they will collect samples to analyse the phenomenon. Other magical ocean effects include the red tide off the coast of Florida and algae blooms all over the world's oceans, and there is still so more to learn. Scientists know more about space than they do about the oceans, according to NASA, and even with all of the world's technology, only a daring seafarer could drift across a mist-colored ocean without thinking "here be dragons." REFERENCES:
https://www.pnas.org/content/102/40/14181
https://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/oceanography/milky-sea.htm DONT FORGET TO UPVOTE, RESTEEM. | title | HOW MUCH OF EARTH’S OXYGEN COMES FROM THE OCEAN?? |
| body | Oceans provide between 50 and 80 percent of the oxygen produced on Earth, according to scientists. The majority of this output comes from oceanic plankton, which includes drifting plants, algae, and some photosynthetic bacteria. Prochlorococcus, for example, is the tiniest photosynthetic creature on the planet. This tiny microbe, on the other hand, provides up to 20% of the oxygen in our entire biosphere. That's more than all of the tropical rainforests on land put together. Because the levels of oxygen produced in the ocean are continually fluctuating, calculating the exact proportion is difficult. Satellite imaging can help scientists follow photosynthesizing plankton and estimate the quantity of photosynthesis taking place in the ocean, but it can't give the whole storey. Seasonally, and in reaction to changes in the water's nutrient load, temperature, and other factors, the number of plankton changes. According to studies, the amount of oxygen in specific regions fluctuates depending on the time of day and the tides. It's vital to remember that, while the ocean produces at least half of the oxygen on the planet, marine life consumes nearly the same amount. Marine species, like land creatures, breathe oxygen, while plants and animals both use oxygen for cellular respiration. When dead plants and animals degrade in the water, oxygen is absorbed as well. When algal blooms die, the decomposition process consumes oxygen quicker than it can be replaced, which is particularly hazardous. This can result in hypoxia, or places with extremely low oxygen concentrations. Because the oxygen levels are too low to support most marine life, these places are referred to as "dead zones." The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science of NOAA perform substantial research and forecasts on algal blooms and hypoxia in order to reduce the harm caused to the ocean ecosystem and human environment. REFERENCES:
https://www.rd.com/list/ocean-mysteries/
https://www.marineinsight.com/environment/top-10-amazing-ocean-mysteries-and-phenomena/ DONT FORGET TO UPVOTE, RESTEEM.
