| title | The House of the Golden Bracelet |
| body | House of the golden bracelet, bracelet with snake heads holding disc with a bust of selene, 1st century AD. Picture Credit: Sailko Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. Wikimedia Commons Pompeii is a rich resource for archaeologists interested in Roman domestic architecture. In particular, it offers many examples of the standard high-status “atrium style” townhouses described by Vitruvius in “On Architecture”. But Pompeii also offers examples that show this standard could be adapted to suit circumstances. The House of the Golden Bracelet, also known as the House of the Wedding of Alexander, is an example of an atrium-style layout adapted to local topography. The Insula Occendentalis The house occupies an area on the western edge of Pompeii known as the Insula Occendentalis. On one of its sides are the western city walls. On the other is the Via Consolare, one of the main roads of Pompeii leading towards the northern Herculaneum Gate. Shops and businesses lined the road and behind them were several beautiful, high-status houses. This mixed commercial and domestic character was a common feature of Pompeii and many Roman cities. However, what makes the houses of the Insula Occendentalis particularly interesting is their unusual design. For to accommodate the sloping land and the city walls they were built against, many of them were multi rather than single story. An Unusual Atrium House The House of the Golden Bracelet is one of the largest and loveliest of these houses. Three stories high, the topography of the land meant that the upper story was at street level, so this was the location of the entry point for the house. Consequently, this upper floor was laid out in the same way as a standard for an atrium house. The fauces or entrance corridor opened out on an atrium surrounded by the usual array of rooms on all but the southernmost side. Usually, in an atrium-style house, the tablinum offered glimpses of the peristyle and the private zone of the house. However, in the House of the Golden Bracelet, this private area was not behind the tablinum but below it. The Wedding of Alexander The private zone was located on the house’s middle floor, reached by a broad flight of stairs next to the tablinum. The general theme of this floor is entertainment and leisure. The house’s bath suite was located here, as well as a series of reception and dining rooms. The layout, vistas and decoration of these rooms would have made a lavish impact on guests. Instead of opening out into a peristyle garden, the rooms looked down onto the garden below. The main dining room was vaulted and painted with fashionable murals. One, the wedding of Alexander the Great and Roxanne, gave the house its initial name: the House of the Wedding of Alexander. On the south side of this floor were the kitchen and service area. Next to this was a narrow flight of stairs leading to the lower level of the house. Gardens and Mystery Cults The garden on the house’s ground floor was laid out in a formal design. Root cavities suggest elaborate box hedges surrounded the flower beds. But the edge of the garden nearest to the house was dominated by water features. A blue-painted pool and fountain, surrounded by a pergola, formed a focal point that tied the garden in with the central room of the lower story: the summer triclinium. The main feature of the summer triclinium was a nymphaeum or fountain situated in an apse at the back of the room. Water from the fountain ran down a series of steps to flow through a channel between the marble dining couches. The water then drained out into the pool in the garden, where it rose again from a central fountain and 28 side jets. The triclinium was the site of some lavish meals. Bones of fish, chicken, lamb, beef, pig, partridge and shellfish have been found nearby. But the garden rooms were not just used for entertainment. Next door to the triclinium was a room decorated with murals of birds and plants. They also incorporated symbols of the Greek god Dionysus. This suggests that the room could have been a sacraria or cult room to the god. The Last Residents In 1974, some of the house’s last occupants were discovered at the base of the ground floor stairs. Casts were made around the bodies, revealing two children, a man and a woman. This young family was killed early on the final day of the eruption of 79 AD. Scattered around the bodies were jewellery and over 200 gold and silver coins, indicating they were people of means. But the most striking find was discovered on the body of the woman. This was a solid gold double-headed snake bracelet that weighed 1.33lbs — so spectacular that it eclipsed even the murals of the wedding on the middle floor and earned the house its new name. "body": "\nHouse of the golden bracelet, bracelet with snake heads holding disc with a bust of selene, 1st century AD. Picture Credit: Sailko Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. Wikimedia Commons\n\nPompeii is a rich resource for archaeologists interested in Roman domestic architecture. In particular, it offers many examples of the standard high-status “atrium style” townhouses described by Vitruvius in “On Architecture”.\n\nBut Pompeii also offers examples that show this standard could be adapted to suit circumstances. The House of the Golden Bracelet, also known as the House of the Wedding of Alexander, is an example of an atrium-style layout adapted to local topography.\n\nThe Insula Occendentalis\nThe house occupies an area on the western edge of Pompeii known as the Insula Occendentalis. On one of its sides are the western city walls. On the other is the Via Consolare, one of the main roads of Pompeii leading towards the northern Herculaneum Gate.\n\nShops and businesses lined the road and behind them were several beautiful, high-status houses. This mixed commercial and domestic character was a common feature of Pompeii and many Roman cities. However, what makes the houses of the Insula Occendentalis particularly interesting is their unusual design. For to accommodate the sloping land and the city walls they were built against, many of them were multi rather than single story.\n\nAn Unusual Atrium House\nThe House of the Golden Bracelet is one of the largest and loveliest of these houses. Three stories high, the topography of the land meant that the upper story was at street level, so this was the location of the entry point for the house.\n\nConsequently, this upper floor was laid out in the same way as a standard for an atrium house. The fauces or entrance corridor opened out on an atrium surrounded by the usual array of rooms on all but the southernmost side.\n\nUsually, in an atrium-style house, the tablinum offered glimpses of the peristyle and the private zone of the house. However, in the House of the Golden Bracelet, this private area was not behind the tablinum but below it.\n\nThe Wedding of Alexander\nThe private zone was located on the house’s middle floor, reached by a broad flight of stairs next to the tablinum. The general theme of this floor is entertainment and leisure. The house’s bath suite was located here, as well as a series of reception and dining rooms. \n\nThe layout, vistas and decoration of these rooms would have made a lavish impact on guests. Instead of opening out into a peristyle garden, the rooms looked down onto the garden below. The main dining room was vaulted and painted with fashionable murals. One, the wedding of Alexander the Great and Roxanne, gave the house its initial name: the House of the Wedding of Alexander.\n\nOn the south side of this floor were the kitchen and service area. Next to this was a narrow flight of stairs leading to the lower level of the house.\n\nGardens and Mystery Cults\nThe garden on the house’s ground floor was laid out in a formal design. Root cavities suggest elaborate box hedges surrounded the flower beds. But the edge of the garden nearest to the house was dominated by water features. A blue-painted pool and fountain, surrounded by a pergola, formed a focal point that tied the garden in with the central room of the lower story: the summer triclinium.\n\nThe main feature of the summer triclinium was a nymphaeum or fountain situated in an apse at the back of the room. Water from the fountain ran down a series of steps to flow through a channel between the marble dining couches. The water then drained out into the pool in the garden, where it rose again from a central fountain and 28 side jets.\n\nThe triclinium was the site of some lavish meals. This suggests that the room could have been a sacraria or cult room to the god.\n\nThe Last Residents\nIn 1974, some of the house’s last occupants were discovered at the base of the ground floor stairs. Casts were made around the bodies, revealing two children, a man and a woman. This young family was killed early on the final day of the eruption of 79 AD.\n\nScattered around the bodies were jewellery and over 200 gold and silver coins, indicating they were people of means. But the most striking find was discovered on the body of the woman. This was a solid gold double-headed snake bracelet that weighed 1.33lbs — so spectacular that it eclipsed even the murals of the wedding on the middle floor and earned the house its new name.\n\nResources\nDobbins, J J and Foss, P W, (eds) (2008) “The World of Pompeii“. Routledge: London and New York.\n\nDeem, James, M, (2005) “Bodies From the Ash: Life and Death in Ancient Pompeii”. Houghton Mifflin Company: Boston",

| title | My Chuseok Menu Brings a Taste of Korea to Michigan |
| body | I remember my youngest uncle holding a big sickle. With its huge curved blade, he pried open the spiky outer husk of a chestnut, peeled the hard brown shell and carefully removed the thin parchment-like inner layer. Then he handed me the fresh, ripe chestnut and I eagerly bit into it, marveling at its resemblance to a tiny brain and savoring the sweet flavor. That first chestnut is one of my favorite Chuseok memories. A Korean national holiday, Chuseok is a three-day-long celebration of the harvest moon and falls right in the middle of the autumn harvest. Families get together and honor their ancestors with food and drink offerings at home (pictured above), or at the ancestral graves in a ceremony called seongmyo. The latter is where my uncle gave me my first taste of freshly fallen chestnuts. The whole extended family on my mother’s side had gathered around the mountainside burial grounds to remove weeds and cut grass, another tradition known as beolcho. Not only did we not own a lawn mower, but the rolling hills and winding paths would’ve made using one impossible, so my uncles did the work by hand with sickles (which also came in handy if we encountered any chestnuts). I always looked forward to our lunch break, when the women in the family would bring out an array of doshirak happan (stacked lunch boxes with multiple layers). My mother’s stack was five boxes high, and as she opened each layer, all of my favorite Chuseok foods would be revealed: the usual suspects of jeon (savory egg-battered vegetables or pancakes) and japchae (sweet potato noodles with julienned beef and vegetables); a colorful layer of namul, the seasoned vegetable dishes; an obligatory layer of rice; and best of all, neobiani (marinated beef steak). My mother only prepared neobiani for the most important holidays (she didn’t even make it for my birthday!). Later I learned the dish is an older form of the more well-known Korean barbecue meats bulgogi and galbi, as well as a regional specialty in my mother’s home province, Gyeonggi-do. I’d start with our doshirak, then taste this auntie’s and that auntie’s food, secretly agreeing with my mother that she was indeed the best cook in the family. As I dug deeper into the history and traditions of Korean cuisine for my restaurant Miss Kim in Ann Arbor, I learned that Chuseok in many ways is a women’s holiday. The first documented mention of Chuseok celebrations dates back to the reign of King Yuri during the Silla dynasty, when he hosted a friendly competition amongst women in the capital. Two teams of women weaved for a month leading up to Chuseok, then their work was judged and a winner declared. Everyone celebrated the winning team with food and drinks, and with song and dance. Later, Chuseok was known to be one of the only days of the year that married daughters could visit their parents. Under the patriarchal family system, a married woman was officially considered a member of her husband’s family, not the family she was born into. It was not customary for married women to visit their birth families very often, but on Chuseok, moms and daughters were able to meet. In light of this knowledge, the time I’ve spent with my mother’s side of the family during Chuseok feels even more precious, and my fondest memories of the holiday are of them and our big picnics with jeon and neobiani. Even though I now live alone in Michigan, far away from my extended family in Korea and even my immediate family of my mother and my brother’s family in New Jersey, I still celebrate Chuseok — just in my own way. Using local ingredients, I whip up a few different types of jeon, make some japchae and of course grill some neobiani in a true amalgamation of Korea, America and Michigan. |

| title | How to mine Steem (STEEM)? |
| body | What is Steem? Steem is a cryptocurrency used to power Steemit, an incentivized social networking blockchain platform. Users create and select content on Steemit just like other social news platforms (e.g. Reddit, Hacker News) and are rewarded in STEEM tokens for their contributions to the network. Steemit is a meritocratic platform, since the more value a content provides, the more a publisher can earn. Users cast votes, creating a hierarchy of content, and the more upvotes a post gets, the more it wins. Another interesting feature is that users who have more coins in STEEM have more influence in casting votes. How does Steem work? Steem has 3 types of digital tokens that make up the Steemit ecosystem: STEEM It is the main cryptocurrency of the Steemit platform. When a content publisher gets votes, it earns STEEM tokens. In addition, about 90% of the new STEEMs that are created go to users who have a large amount of Steem Power (SP), creating an incentive for participants to reinvest their earnings back into the network. Steem can be exchanged for bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies through various exchanges. Steem Power (SP) If you want to have the right to vote in Steemit, you will need to convert your STEEMs to Steem Power (SP). This process is known as “powering up” and is equivalent to a capital investment in the Steemit network. Each unit of SP equals one vote and users who own the most SP have the most influence over which content to reward and make more visible. That is, the up and down votes of users with more SP are worth more than those of users with less SP. Steem Dollars (SBD) Steem Dollars, valued at 1:1 to the US dollar, represent a way of lending the community the value of one US dollar. This is a mechanism designed to foster the growth of the network. How to mine Steem (STEEM)? As of August 2, 2017, when Justin Sun, founder of the Tron platform, bought the company, there was a restructuring of Steem’s operations and what was known as the mining process, based on Proof of Work (Proof of Work) no longer exists. Instead the Steem network bases its protocol on Delegated proof of stake. Let’s see how this algorithm works and what advantages it brings compared to the Proof of Work. As we have seen, Steem is based on a new state-of-the-art blockchain technology called Graphene, which uses “witnesses” instead of “miners” to produce blocks. The purpose of using Delegated proof of stake (DPOS) is to increase the speed of transactions on the platform and make it more scalable. To achieve this, Steem uses tokens, which are accounts approved by Steem stakeholders that are responsible for creating a block every three seconds. Each Steemit account has the ability to become a witnesses by setting up and maintaining a Linux server that is capable of creating new blocks on the blockchain. The Steem blockchain schedules witnesses to produce a new block every 3 seconds. To be more precise, 21 witnesses (nodes) produce 21 blocks in each 63-second round. In addition to the speed in mining new blocks, the Steem blockchain, unlike Bitcoin’s, does not allocate 100% of the new coins created to miners, but uses 10% of the new coins as rewards to pay witnesses. The other 90% of the new STEEM coins are awarded to content publishers, curators and Steem Power holders. How to become a Steemit witness? Being a Steem token has nothing to do with the traditional mining process since in order to mine new cryptos, you have to get votes from the Steem community so you can be one of the top ranked tokens. So, if you want to become a Steemit witness, just follow the steps in this guide: 1. Get servers with very good performance and that are secure. If you want to be among the first 20 witnesses, it is advisable to use a server with the following characteristics: 64GB DDR4 RAM, 2x Intel Xeon E5-2630 V3 2x 240GB SSDs 1Gbit/s connection Make sure that the server you use is protected from potential computer attacks. There are many tutorials that explain which programs to use to secure Linux servers. Regarding hosting, many Steem users advise to use one of the following hosting: Privex DigitalOcean OVH BUYVM 2. Install Steem, edit the configuration file and synchronize the blockchain. 3. Use the wallet CLI to create your private key and edit the configuration file again. 4. Update the witness to verify that it is working and post a witness statement thread. How much do Steem witness accounts earn? As we have seen previously, the earnings of the witnesses are in Steem Power (SP) and each block they generate is equivalent to 1 Steem Power. The more SP they earn, the more they increase their voting power used for healing or for their personal use. Normally the witnesses who earn the most SP are those in the Top 20. These get about 0.18 Steem Power every 63 seconds, or about 250 Steem Power per day, which equals about $300 per day at the current Steem price. In short, on the Steemit platform, the coins created are distributed in this way: Content authors/curators receive 75% of the new coins created; Users with Steem Power holdings are allocated 15% of the coins; The remaining 10% is awarded to witnesses. Well, while it’s probably not profitable to be a witness in the short term, in the long term being an active part of the community can pay very well, especially if combined with author rewards and curation rewards. Which wallet to use to store Steem? If you have decided to jump into the Steemit user community and wish to earn your first Steem tokens, I advise you to first get a wallet in which to store your STEEM. Although there are many options, we advise you to use one of the following wallets: eSteem Wallet It is a mobile wallet that, in addition to storing Steem tokens, allows you to access blog posts and material as it is linked to your Steemit platform account. Steemit It is an online wallet for Steem, where your private keys are stored. Vessel Vessel is a desktop wallet that you can download to your PC. It is a soft wallet as you don’t have to download the entire blockchain on your PC. The private keys are stored in the wallet itself, which makes it secure and makes Vessel one of the best Steem desktop wallets. CLI Wallet This is a desktop wallet that you can connect directly to the Steemit web wallet. CLI is considered one of the best Steem coin wallets although it is not designed for beginners, as users should have some understanding of command line programming. |

| title | Luna Classic: The Silent Money Train! |
| body | Luna Classic has been going parabolic during the past 14 days. The token has risen from a low price of about $0.00009905 on August 24th, all the way to $0.00048657 today, (September 7th). This is an astronomical gain of nearly 4,000% in just two weeks! In Market Cap terms, Luna Classic has gone from a meager $325 Million to $2.3 Billion Market Cap token in just the same amount of time it takes to visit the top 5 National Parks in the United States by Train: 14 Days! Luna Classic is creating more Billionaires, right now, than has ever been created in Crypto! It is the Silent Money Train that is ripping across the entire Crypto world! Save for the Lunatics, the entire Crypto establishment has totally been silent on Luna Classic. You will not find any articles covering Luna Classic’s meteoric rise at any major Crypto news platform. Similarly, Luna has been completely shunned by the major Crypto YouTube influencers. Silence and Money! What is true however, is that Billions, if not Trillions, are being made in Luna Classic at this very moment. Major hedge funds, banks, and traders are pouring Billions into this nascent platform. It is the most hush money investment in the industry. The establishment practice is simple: when things are Good, you move fast and silent! This is why you will not hear any credible investor or financial commentator boasting about the revival of Luna Classic. There is no whistle on the money train! It is Fast and Quiet! Luna Classic Social Trending Since the beginning of August, I have written over eight articles covering the rise of Luna Classic on my Medium page. And the traffic on these articles have been nothing but estonishing. Some of these articles have had over 7.2k views and 2.1k reads. Most of the search traffic on Luna Classic is coming from Google, Twitter, and instant messaging services (email, IM, and direct). In fact, Luna Classic is the most searched-for Crypto in Google and Twitter. It has been trending on both networks since the revival of Luna Classic on August 26th. The Luna Classic Money Train! While it is impossible to realistically estimate the amount of money being made in Luna Classic’s revival, we can certainly look at the actual volume of daily trades as an indication of the wealth that LUNC is creating. Consulting CoinMarketCap and Coingecko, we can see that Luna Classic just reached a market of $3.1 Billion on a 24-hour trading volume of $2.5 Billion. The token rose over 25% today and over 50% between September 4th and 5th. You can clearly see from the above charts where true Crypto money is being made these days. It is not in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Polkadot or Cardano. All these Layer 1 platforms have been struggling to merely maintain their respective supports. Furthermore, their price movements are largely correlated to Bitcoin; and Bitcoin has been on a downward trend the entire Summer, save for a few bear-trap rallies. The true money maker in the Crypto space is Luna Classic. It is the only chain creating Billionaires at this moment. But, unless you happen to be reading my articles or viewing some Lunatic YouTube channel, you will never hear about Luna Classic. That’s how GOOD things are in the Luna Classic’s Party Train! Everybody who knows how money is made also knows that silence is the key to success. You do not speak about your deals. You do not reveal the size of your bank account. And most of all, you absolutely do not share any information on the new deals you are working on! Only in the Crypto space will you find YouTubers showcasing their portfolios and bragging about which tokens have 100xed. However, they too have begun to learn with Wall Street and have joined the Silent money movement! Returning to the Money Train As I am about to close this article, I decided to check on the current price of Luna Classic. Guess what? It just crossed the $0.0005 resistance! We are officially heading all the way to $0.001! This train ain’t stopping. The cabins are locked; the engine is loaded! And, the whistles are broken! Disclosure: In compliance with the financial disclosure requirements, I must inform you that I am not an investment advisor. This article is for information only. Do your own research. |
