      "title": "The 4% Rule and Beyond: The Easy Answer to “How can I retire in my 30s and never run out of money?”",

This rule defines the maximum rate at which you can spend your retirement savings without ever running out.\n\nThe rule it’s relatively simple although it is not always possible to define a sustainable withdrawal rate that will work in all economic cycles, as the economy will go up and down. At each economic cycle the sustainable withdrawal rate will be different and that's where the 4% rule kicks in, as it provides a sustainable withdrawal rate that will work on most of the scenarios most of the time, as we shall see later.\n\nOne of the first questions to be answered is about where does this 4% number come from? Why it is not 1%, 10% or 90%?  In this respect one extensive analysis for retirement scenarios under different historical economic cycles was performed in the [Trinity Study](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_study). The study was performed assuming a fairly safe portfolio composition (50% stocks and 50% bonds) using historical market returns to calculate a sustainable withdrawal rate with a very high level of confidence that your portfolio will last at least for a 30-year period. \n\nThe outcome of the Trinity Study is that in the worst-case scenario a 4% withdrawal rate would have been sustainable. And that is where the 4% rule comes from. It is important to notice that 4% is a worst-case scenario as in many years a withdrawal rate of 5% or more would have still ended up with a growing surplus.\n\nLet's be clear, that only applies over the very long term scenario (decades) as in any given year the market and the inflation will go up and down departing from their historical means, like in the great recession of 2009. The best case scenario would be to retire in a time where market prices are temporally depressed and just before a long boom. But as Burton Malkiel wrote in his famous book Random Walk Down Wall Street:\n\n> “I have never known anyone who could consistently time the market. And in fact I’ve never known anyone who knows anyone, who was able to consistently time the market.”\n\nAn important implication of the 4% rule is the answer to the question: **\"How much money do I need to retire today and never run out of money?\"** And the answer then becomes easy, just take your annual total spending and multiply it by 25 (or divide by 4%) and  that’s your retirement number!\n\nSo a real life application of the 4% rule, if your annual expenses are $30,000 per year you would need a portfolio of $750,000 to be able to retire, plus a bit more to account for safety margin.\n\nSo now that you know how much you will need to retire, we will need to address the how in the next posts.\n\nHave fun playing with the numbers until then!",
